Thanks for the info. I saw your post the other day about DC. We live in NY, I would be pretty happy if he was sent to DC.

  • Beachmom (Ship 13, Div 281)

Thanks! I'm learning as I go! I appreciate any help!
  • cs3370cs

Lighthouse, my son was dropped off at O'Hare at 2:30am the day after PIR.  He found a recliner in the USO club and slept till we arrived at 11am.  We spent the day together until he flew out to California at 5:35pm.  I was amazed at the number of people who stopped him to shake his hand and speak a few words of thanks and encouragement.  Even though we had a 5 hour drive home I would do it all over again.

  • Karen

Lighthouse....How is your son doing?  Is his knee better?

  • Beachmom (Ship 13, Div 281)

Yesterday was my son's PIR and today he flew to FLW to start his A school. We had the best weekend ever in GL and now looking forward to A school. My son is very excited and says he has a lot of cool stuff to learn. God bless his mentor!
  • CBGB

What airport did he leave from? My son will be heading to FLW soon too.PIR 8/30. What is his rating? My son will be an EO. He is looking forward to A school too. He has wanted to do this since he was about two.
  • Beachmom (Ship 13, Div 281)

CBGB, my son flew out of O'Hare at 1:45pm. He was dropped off at the airport at 3:45am. I was waiting for him at Gate 2, 2A is where the bus drops them. There is a guy from the USO directing them on where to go. They are all going to different locations I was able to get a gate pass from American Airlines and go through security with my son and sit with him until he left just make sure you have your drivers license to show at security
  • CBGB

Beachmom thanks and congratulations on your son's PIR. How did he get from the airport to FLW? I saw that they were responsible to get transportation from the airport to the base.
  • Lighthouse3 Div203 PIR5/24/13

Karen, thank you for asking!  Our son said that his injury is worse than originally thought, although it is improving some.  Apparently, he is still waiting for a knee brace to be "prescribed."  Also, he will have to go off-base for PT, starting ???  I forgot to ask exactly when.

In spite off all this, he was very happy this week.  A high-up chief requested that our son do yeoman duty for him (while he is on hold) and is very pleased with his work.  Apparently, there is a good-sized group of new CRs straight from P.I.R. beginning tomorrow, and he has been asked by this chief to help with their indoctrination (A school introduction, paperwork, and such).  He has always been good at making lemonade out of lemons and he likes to help and encourage people.

We are praying he get the leave right after his birthday and over Labor Day which he has requested.  He has been there since P.I.R. the end of May and probably won't get to rejoin a class at block 5 until some time in Sept., so it would be a good chance to visit.

  • Beachmom (Ship 13, Div 281)

He actually flew right on base! He called his OD before he left Chicago to let them know he was coming and what time he landed. There were only 3 sailors from his PIR going to FLW. Once they landed, someone was there to get them.
  • CBGB

Thanks beachmom. We'll see what happens when he goes so far I think there are 3 going in his group also.
Lighthouse- I hope your son has time for a complete recovery. My husband is a utility co. Lineman for over 20 years, climbing school is no joke but the more they do it the easier it gets. My son went to the recruiter with the intention of becoming a CE but jumped at EO when it was offered. He has climbed some with his dad and went to 2 years of college for electrical construction. It looks like they get to do a little of everything once in the field. Good luck to your son, hope the leave is approved.
  • Lynette

My son flew into FLW back in November of 2012.  He flew right onto the base to in a little prop job plane.  I think it sat about 8 people.  When he flew home for Christmas, they bussed everyone to St. Louis airport (2 hours away) and they flew out of there.  They picked them all up when they returned from Christmas.  When he flew out to Gulfport in February, he flew directly out of FLW base again. Have not seen him since we took his truck to him in Gulfport in March.  He was hoping to get home on leave for a week in 2 more weeks, but they keep messing up his paperwork for leave and now he says he may not get it.  I am flying down to see him for a day or two if he does not get leave approved.  I have never been away from him for so long.  Good luck to all your new Seabees that are just beginning their next adventure.

  • Lighthouse3 Div203 PIR5/24/13

Thank you, CBGB.  Our son actually enjoyed the climbing--until he hurt his knee.  :-)  Lynette, I hope your son does make it home.  I, too, am thinking of flying to TX to visit our son if he can't make it up here, but I need to know 2  weeks ahead to get a good plane fare.  Or, if we can get a dog sitter, we will all drive down.

  • belovedbyHim

Question for all you vets out there... Does my SR need to find his own way from the airport to base when he heads there from BC or will they pick him up??  His PIR is 8/30 and I'm just wondering if we should make sure that he knows how to get a cab since he's never had to do anything like that in his life. (not that we have done it much ourselves.)

  • Debi

As of today (well actually yesterday) I have a graduated EO!! He also graduated top of his class! I was so proud of him and had to laugh when he had to lead the other EOs and EAs in singing the SeaBee song since he doesn't sing :) LOL But he did a great job!

Our trip to FLW and back was quite the interesting experience too. We live only 8 hours from FLW including driving breaks. When we checked in to our hotel we found out that many of the rivers and such were flooding big time! The town of Waynesville, just a few exits down I 44 was under water too. Well needless to say it rained Tuesday/Wednesday night. In the morning we had big thunderstorms with torential rain. We decided to head back to Milwaukee as our second son graduates from boot camp on Friday and didn't want to get stuck in Missouri and miss it. All the counties around FLW were flooded..all roads running north and south were closed. I 44 was shut down in several places headed EAST and West!  We tried for an hour to get south or east to get around the flooding but no go! Finally we went west towards springfield MO until we got out of the flooded counties and then started to head North and east. Needless to say an 8 hour drive turned into a 14 hour trip. We arrived home in the wee hours of this new day.

BUT through it all I had to laugh..when my seabee went through PIR, Chicago and Waukegan were literally underwater. Our meet and greet was cancelled, Buckley road was closed in many spots, flights were cancelled etc..Now he graduates from A school and rivers are flooded, towns underwater, highways closed! I think the Good Lord is trying to remind him that Navy means water! LOL

Hi BelovedbyHim, my son has always gone to the USO in the airport when it is a new duty station. He was usually picked up at the airport by someone from the base especially if there was more than one person reporting for the first time. He should be assisted by the USO folks. Congrats!!! Are you attending PIR?
  • Beachmom (Ship 13, Div 281)

BelovedbyHim, My son's PIR was 8/2 so he just left for FLW.  My SR arrived at the airport in Chicago by bus early in the morning.  The USO had a representative there assisting. There are so many sailors there and only 1 USO guy! I met the bus at the airport at 3:30 am so I could find my son, get a gate pass and go through security with him.  Once he was directed to the airline check in, he was on his own.  He had 8 hours before his flight left.  We had breakfast and I showed him how to find the USO (their home away from home) and showed him how to ALWAYS look at the overhead monitors when checking on his flight. The airlines seem to always change gates!  He has traveled a lot with our family, just never on his own until he went to BC.  After 8 hours of waiting, (which by the way, went by fast for me)  he flew from Chicago to St Louis, then St Louis to FLW.  They flew directly onto the base.  There were only 3 sailors going so they stayed together and navigated their own way.  My son called his OD (the number will be on his folder carrying his orders) BEFORE he left Chicago letting her know what time he would arrive in FLW and she had someone there to pick the 3 of them up.  If know one is available to pick them up, they do have taxi service on base.  Make sure he has some cash just in case.  Happy to help in any way!  This is my sailor's first week on base at FLW!  If your are going to PIR, make sure you contact Sarge 817-212-0246.  He has a wealth of information!  He provides taxi service for half the price of the regular taxi's.  He knows the schedule for PIR and knows exactly where to take you and pick you up.  We used his services all weekend.  We did not rent a car and decided it would be easier to use Sarge. He took us everywhere, he even took me to the airport to see my sailor off at 3am!  If you are on Facebook, find Sarge, John. L Spadaro and make sure you join Navy4Moms.com!

  • CBGB

Thanks for all the great info everyone. Congrats to the graduates. Too bad about the flooding, at least you have a great story to tell. DEBI- where is your son going after FLW?
  • CBGB

DEBI- I just looked back on posts and realized your son is the one going to DC. Sounds like a great place to be. I hope my son at least stays state side for a little while. His PIR is 8/30 he will be going to EO A school soon. Its hard waiting to hear from them, but time really does fly by.
  • belovedbyHim

Julieb1019-- Yes we are going to PIR

BeachMom-- Yeah for Ship13!  Pardon the ignorance but what/where is FLW?  We have already arranged for a rental car since DH wants to have the freedom to go when & where we want with out having to wait on someone since we will likely only have the 1 day.  We are staying at the Navy lodge so we will either park near the base or just walk there.

CBGB what ship is your SR?  Tomorrow marks the start of week 5.  Only 3 more till PIR!!!

  • CBGB

Hi Belovedbyhim, my son is ship 12 div 325. We will be driving from NY so we will have our car. We are also staying at the Navy lodge. I heard a rumor earlier that ship 12 was disciplined for too much talking and lost an hour of liberty on the 30th. I got a letter today from my son, he said he was really frustrated that a lot of guys keep talking and they all keep getting in trouble. It is so frustrating. Can't wait to go out to PIR. Our son is really looking forward to FLW (Fort Lenard Wood, Missouri). I saw a friend recently who's son recently left FLW and she said he called it "missery".

Thanks to everyone for all the encouragement and great information it really helps to have some idea what to expect.

Lighthouse- How's the knee healing? Did you hear about leave yet? Hope it all works out.

  • Beachmom (Ship 13, Div 281)

belovedbyHim, it's Fort Leonard Wood, MO

  • belovedbyHim

Thanks BeachMom. My SR is going to be a BU and he's supposed to go to Gulfport.  I'm also wondering if anyone can point me toward any info as to what they learn and how long his A school will be. (once they class up).  Thanks.

  • julieb1019

A school for BU is about 3 months. They learn many aspects of constructing a building cement pouring masonry sheet rock finishing roofing etc I think that my son said that they take apart what they build at the end of the school phase. There is a graduation ceremony that most families don't attend but photos are listed on FB then it is off to ECS which lasts about a month and teaches combat skills once they report to Gulfport you will have normal communication again text cell etc. Everyone will be assigned to a battalion mine is in 133. We are going for a visit at the end of the month and will stay at the Navy Lodge on base. Best of luck to those who will PIR soon!
  • belovedbyHim

Julieb1019- Thank you!!! That is exactly the info I was looking for.  I have well intentioned family telling me that he'd be in school 6mos to 1yr.  That seemed unusually long to me since it seemed that nearly everything else is under 6 months .  So are they eligible for leave between A school grad and ECS?  If he doesn't have to wait too long to class up he'd be done around Thanksgiving and If he has to wait for ECS that would be putting him closer to Christmas before he'd be able to come home.  Does that sound right??  I am Soooooooooooooo ready for 'regular" communication again.  At PIR the guest speaker ordered all the new sailors to "call, write or e-mail your mother every week".  I wish he'd give that order to ALL Sailors!

  • julieb1019

It is quite possible Beloved byHim if the timing works out for leave around Christmas. The base pretty much shuts down for the holidays. My son had leave in-between schools and it was in March last year. He has missed 2 Christmases and I hope to have him home this year. You have a lot to look forward to in the next couple of weeks. I am sure that the Boot Camp Moms have shared tips for PIR and meeting at the airport with his electronics to send with him etc. Always happy to share what I know and can find out for you what I don't know for sure!!
  • julieb1019

Btw there is a Facebook page for NCTC Gulfport also on twitter and once he is assigned to a battalion they will also have FB and twitter too
  • Lighthouse3 Div203 PIR5/24/13

CBGB, I'm still waiting to hear from him this week. :-) I know he doesn't have duty this weekend, so we'll call him at some point, if he doesn't call us. I keep watching the plane fares climb as I wait to hear about his leave. Because if he can't come here, I shall want to fly there over a weekend when he doesn't have duty. I'm kicking myself for not having gone this weekend.

BTW, I've heard that the Navy Lodge at Great Lakes is 1 mile from base, and it is on a fairly well-traveled road without sidewalks (at least in part, if I remember the pictures that were posted).
  • Debi

My son has been assigned his first duty station..Washington DC. Does anyone know anything about this base? Just a curious mom wanting to know more :) He's been assigned to CBMU 202 DC detachment.

  • Lighthouse3 Div203 PIR5/24/13

DS is happy that we will be driving down to visit him next weekend.  He spent an hour and forty minutes in physical therapy yesterday, being evaluated and so forth.  He said it was very painful.  The diagnoses were patellar tendonitis ("jumper's knee") and chondromalacia of the patella.  It seems the cartilage has been torn away and he is rubbing bone on bone.  It makes me cringe even to type it.  I won't even write the other details.  He now has a supportive band to wear under his knee cap, and has been placed on medical hold for another month.  It is questionable whether he will be able to continue training as a CE.  We will be celebrating his 27th. birthday; it makes a mother sad to see him injured so young.

  • CBGB

Too bad about the knee. At least he has a lot of time to rest it. He must be so tired of waiting around though. Enjoy your visit.

  • Lighthouse3 Div203 PIR5/24/13

    Thank you for the encouragement,CBGB!

  • Kim

Hi everyone! My son was just assigned to a Seabee battalion in Gulfport. He is not a Seabee but I hope you'll let me join in here! He was on the USS Enterprise for two deployments and is now on his way to CES. He's very excited to be attached to a "land" part of the Navy. :)
  • julieb1019

Hi Kim, welcome! My son us a BU and he has had one deployment.
  • Lighthouse3 Div203 PIR5/24/13

Welcome, Kim. My son is on medical hold; training to be a CE at Sheppard AFB. We are heading down to see him by Friday!
  • tabu1218

Lighthouse, my son is there, as well. He's training to be a UT.
  • Karen

Welcome Kim. My son is also at Sheppard Air Force base training to be a CE, and I happen to live close to Gulfport. Lighthouse I am so jealous. I haven't seen my son since June 22. Hope your son heals soon. Mine starts pole climbing on Monday please keep him in your prayers!
  • Kim

Thanks, ladies! I'm going to have to learn all the abbreviations of the different jobs! Hopefully next year we'll get down there to visit.
  • julieb1019

Kim, we Moms learn from each other and share the good and not so good times too. BU is builder.we are visiting my son in GP at the end of the month. I am very excited. He was home in March after a year away from home.
  • Philip'sMom (Deb)

Welcome Kim! My son is a CM (Construction Mechanic) and is also assigned to the 133 in GP.  He just got back from his 1st deployment.  We hope to go down to visit in Oct or Nov. It will be our 1st visit to GP. Looking forward to seeing our son too!

  • Kim

OK! I know two abbreviations, now! I know what you mean about learning from each other. I belong to the N4M Enterprise group and when they were deployed we would get information from each other, depending on what we received from our kids via email! It was/and still is pretty active as we seemed to get to know each other pretty well during those long deployments. And homecomings were a joyous celebration on the pier! My son is an Intelligence Specialist- not sure if I should say what battalion he is attached to!
  • julieb1019

My son started in IS and midway through A school changed to BU. He is happier being hands on and of course the combat training too. I learned early on to not ask any questions because of course there were never any answers! LOL!
  • julieb1019

My son started out as IS and soon after he started A school in Va he changed to BU. He enjoys the hands on work and the combat training too. I learned early on to not ask any questions because there were never any answers. LOL!
  • Kim

Julieb- they all have to find their way! Mine is excited to get through Ground school and go on to CES as he is a very active guy. :)
  • Tami

My son is in port hueneme starting school soon, I'm wanting to mail care package he gave me an address, is there a certain address to mail care packages?
  • Debi

Well my Seabee is on his way to D.C. as I type. It was nice to spoil him for 10 days and to see how many goodies he would really eat :) lol He's become soooo weight concious since losing his weight to get into the Navy. Wish I had that determination..but stuff just tastes too good! LOL

  • Debi

cmcinich I did take quite a few pictures at the A school graduation. If you're on Facebook I have them posted on there..you can grab anything you'd like :) Also if you go on Facebook and type in Navy Detachement Fort Leonard Wood there is a page and they posted the "official" photos of each of our bees getting their certificate and some nice group pictures too :)

  • CBGB

Cmcninch is your daughter going to Gulf Port for combat training? It seems that not everyone has been sent. How long will she be there? Do you know where she is heading next? My son will be heading to FLW in 2 weeks. Then supposed to be heading to GP after that. Just trying to get an idea of what lies ahead.
  • Beachmom (Ship 13, Div 281)

CBGB, My son is in FLW now (PIR was 8/2) and will head to GP for combat training.

  • CBGB

Thanks Beachmom- Does he know yet if he gets leave before going to GP or after? How long will he be at FLW and GP.We have heard so many different things. Is your son also an EO?
