CBGB, yes my son is an EO.  I haven't heard if he gets leave in between or not.  He has been in endoc ( I think that's how it is spelled) for 2 weeks and is starting his classes today.  He will be there for 10 weeks, then GP for 8 weeks.  I had heard he gets to come home after GP for 5 days, but I haven't received confirmation on that yet.  I'm learning as I go!  I plan on his being home for a few days in the middle of December.

  • CBGB

Beachmom thanks- We are trying to figure out if he will be home between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Not sure about how long everything is and if they are put on hold that delays things further. What do they do while they are on hold? Thanks for the info I am sure I will be looking for more advice as your son  progresses ahead of mine.

  • Beachmom (Ship 13, Div 281)

CBGB, The last two weeks they have finished all paperwork, still have PT, inspections etc and waited for a few others to arrive.  Being on an Army base is different and they have to re-learn it the Army way.  Today was his first day of class.  I'm happy to help.  I'm learning as I go along also!

  • Debi

Beachmom did your son's orders say he was going to GP for 8 weeks? I know only 4 of my son's class actually went to GP. Elias ended up in D.C. with a CBMU which has been another adventure in itself! We're all learning the ropes at that new base! lol Definitely NOT like A school!

  • azplantlady

Hello Beachmom and CBGB. My daughter is an EO and graduates from FLW next week. She will be coming home for 2 weeks and is then off to GP for 4 weeks. She was then told that she will have 4 days before reporting for duty at Port Hueneme. Hope this helps you get a sense of the timing.
  • Beachmom (Ship 13, Div 281)

Debi, yes my son's order say GP for 8 weeks after A School.  azplantlady, I thought they went straight to GP for C School!  That would be great if he had a little time in between!

  • Tobianne

C school is something that is done after. Not all Seabee's get to do C school. I think you may be confusing ECS training done at GP.
Not all Seabee's get leave after A-school either. It just depends on where they report to and if that battalion is on deployment. Well actually many things go into why they can or can not have leave. My kiddo went from A school in TX, to Gulf Port for ECS. She had 3 days of leave or before she actually needex to report. From there off to PH. Then she had some leave and decided to go back to GP to visit friends that were going to deploy very soon. It is all about what the Navy wants at that moment. So to say he will get leave is hard to say. They build this leave up crom the first day of BC. So when they do use any, it goes against them. Unless this is used in moving from base to base. Meaning they are driving. And even then it is a crap shoot. Again, just depends on what the Navy needs at that minute.
I am not positive, but I do believe my kiddo was at GP for 8 weeks for ECS. I can ask her when I speak to her. May be a day or so as she is deployed right now.
  • CBGB

Thanks everyone. All the information is greatly appreciated. It is great to at least hear what may be in store in the next few months.  I am quickly learning that nothing is dependable. My cousin's husband has been in for 25 years and they are still getting surprises all the time about leave time and deployments.

We actually stopped at the McD's in FLW today on our way down to Sheppard AFB tomorrow. I thought about the Seabees that are training there, although we only ran into Army BC graduates.

Lighthouse3:  I am so jealous.  I miss my son so much.  Poor kid is right in the middle of pole climbing and having a really rough time.  Yesterday is roommate fell 30 feet and broke his leg.  I am getting frantic texts and phone calls every night about how unsafe it is and how they do not give them safety equipment and he is so worried he will fall.  I dont know how to comfort him and it just breaks my heart.  I hope your Son is feeling better and I pray for quick healing for him.  Hug your son tight!  Safe travels

  • Tobianne

@Karen, unless things have changed..... they do have safety gear. I am positive they have a harness, as well as the spikes that go on the boots. Now the harness is what goes around the pole. That should not be all, but is better than nothing. It is scary since it seems when the pole has been climbed by so many that the holes get bigger. They do change out the poles and explain how to keep from falling. I know that sounds easier said than done. Trust me, I was in your shoes. As I had mentioned before, have him stay calm, but not over calm. To have a moderate amount of fear is actually good, too much is bad and none is a disaster waiting. He should be getting close to being finished, can not remember how long they climbed. That really was one of the least things I worried about. lol I still did, and when she fell it made it worse, but it does get better.

  • Lighthouse3 Div203 PIR5/24/13

    I think block 5 is 2 1/2 weeks. Karen, I sent you a msg.
  • Karen

Thanks Tobianne. I do appreciate any words of comfort however a wrap around the pole and gaffs are not a safety harness that will prevent falls. Every group that goes through has several injuries. I can assure you he has at least a moderate amount of fear especially after watching his roommate fall. I afraid he is quickly approaching the point of having to much fear. They really should have a supersqueeze or some other safety apparatus which would prevent a lot of these injuries. I can not wait until this part is over! I think he has today and 2 days next week.
  • Tobianne

I completely agree. That however is the Navy way of safety. If they had that my kiddo would not have fallen, room mate would not have a broken leg from falling. I am with you 100% there. it is odd how they seem to find the smallest of ways to show them safety. I guess they use the bucket trucks more if they need to go up a pole. Much safer they must feel. I can not remember, but I know my dad and even my BIL had/have a ton of gear for safety measures. My husband is a roofer and he has so much gear, that it is crazy. years ago, my husband would not have tied off, many years later a few falls and he is sure to tie off and harness up!

  • CBGB

Hope everyone stays safe and heals this weekend. My husband has been a utility co. lineman for almost 25 years. Unfortunately there is not a lot of safety equipment for pole climbing.  He was trying to develop as safer harness years ago and get a patent, but was told that if OSHA did not require it on job sites then it wouldn't be worth the time and money to produce it. He often is miles out in the woods climbing old rotten poles. It gets easier, and the more they do it the better they get at it. But I remember the climbing school was no fun when he was there. I was home with a baby and a 3 year old hearing the stories of everyone getting hurt. Good  luck everyone, wishing strength and courage to all your seebees for the next week of climbing.

  • Karen

CBGB: My fiancé is also a lineman and has been for over 30 years. There are safety harnesses out there like the supersqueeze. While it might not be perfect if it prevents even one injury it would be worth it. I hope your husband continues to remain safe and bless him for wanting to develop a safer harness. Thanks for the well wishes!

I saw your son's roommate last night and tonight, Karen, although I haven't met him. It makes me so sad. Our son says he's a nice guy. He was waiting for a van to pick him up at the quarterdeck when we returned our son tonight, on crutches. :-(. Our son said he saw yours this morning, Karen, but they didn't talk. We saw the poles quite a ways in the distance tonight.

Our son was told his knee was at 65% function right now and they expect a full recovery (PT 3x/wk). However, he took a step tonight and it made the most awful sound, it nearly made me sick. He's not limping at least.
  • Karen

Lighthouse3: Garcia is a nice guy! I talked to my son this morning. He is worried about Garcia and how long he will be washed back and worried about more pole climbing next week. I can't wait until it is over. Happy to hear your son will have a full recovery. Was he finished with climbing or will he have to go back to it? Hope you are having a good visit. Keeping your son in my prayers.
  • Lighthouse3 Div203 PIR5/24/13

Thank you for your prayers. My son said he appreciates it. He did three full days of the pole climbing, but I'm sure there is more. The whole block 5 is 2 1/2 weeks. He said he's done the homework ahead for the last two blocks, but we will see how the knee does ultimately. Our son isn't afraid of the climbing and actually was enjoying it until his knee went out.

We have about 926 miles to drive tomorrow and our right rear shock is bad. We want to replace it with another GM shock of the same variety, so we will be driving more slowly home. I don't know if we can make it all the way home in one day at a slower speed, so we will need wisdom.

Dad is picking up son so we can eat together and go to chapel.
  • Karen

Lighthouse3: from what I am getting from my son they had to climb 4 days last week and will climb either 2 or 3 days this week. They have to complete dummy rescue and cross arm change. Hope you had a good visit and a safe trip home!
  • Lighthouse3 Div203 PIR5/24/13

Thank you, Karen. We had a wonderful visit, although, of course, too short! The trip home was uneventful, by the Lord's grace; we were quite exhausted and I don't dare do that (all in one 15-16 hour day) to my husband again! My back is still bothering me today; it feels like I kinked it all over!

It was so good to be able to get an idea of what their Navy A School life is like, as well as to share a bit in this part of it. I can see why our son said it gets lonely.

We went to chapel and met a wonderful pastor/chaplain. He gave our son his phone number and said to feel free to call him day or night. It was the 11 a.m. service and not our usual type, but the pastor gave a solid sermon from Scripture and the people were friendly. One of our son's friends, a UT, has been going there for a while, and I think our son might make this a regular thing. I hope so.

I pray your son has made it safely through the climbing.
  • Karen

Lighthouse3:  Happy to hear you had a wonderful visit.  That was one very long trip.  I am sure you and your husband were both exhausted.  So happy to hear your son has found a chaplain to talk to.  That will be such a help to him and comfort to you.  My son has one more day of climbing tomorrow.  Its a buddy climb and they will be hooking up a 170 lb transformer.  If he makes it through he will be finished with climbing.  Any word on when your son will be able to return to block 5?

  • Lighthouse3 Div203 PIR5/24/13

Karen, I will be praying for your son tomorrow, for safety and a successful completion of the climbing.  That's an awfully large transformer--more than my son weighs.  I believe he will be on medical hold until the class he began with graduates, 2 1/2 more weeks, and then his knee re-evaluated.  He's actually processing the orders of his fellow classmates.  That's bittersweet.

  • belovedbyHim

Any Gulfport Moms on here?? Aprox 10 newlyy minted Seabee sailors just arrived in Biloxi/ Gulfport.  If their orders say not to report till tomorrow or later this next week what do they do with them in the mean time??  Also does anyone know how they get from the airport to base??  It was so good to see my Sailor at PIR but just WAY TOO SHORT!!!!!!

  • Joanie Tyler's Mom(133 Bees)

When my son arrived at GP, he was assigned a sponsor ahead of time. That person met him at the airport and took him directly to base and got him situated in the barracks and got him settled in and let him know what to expect next. He arrived on a holiday weekend.

  • BritTexas

Pleased to meet everyone. My son got to Gulfport last Saturday from Bootcamp.
  • CBGB

Hope everyone at climbing school or healing up to complete climbing school is doing well. My son had PIR this past Friday and arrived at Ft. Lenard Wood on Sunday to begin EO A school. Anyone else out there with sailors new  to FLW? Spoke to him today. So nice that he has his phone again. He said he thinks they will be on hold for a few weeks till the whole group arrives.

  • Beachmom (Ship 13, Div 281)

CBGB, Congrats on your son's PIR!  My son is a few weeks ahead of yours.  He is in FLW and he starting his third week of A School this week.  He is an EO also! He was on hold for several weeks when he first arrived on 8/3.  My son asked me to send breakfast items, seems they don't have time to go to chow in the mornings.  Once a week I send him a box of breakfast bars, protein bars, granola etc. so he at least has something to eat in the mornings!

  • CBGB

Thanks beachmom- Thanks for the advice. I will check with him about the breakfast. I know he ate cold pizza this morning.

  • belovedbyHim

Any Gulfport Moms on here?? My BUCR just arrived on Saturday.  So far he says He's loving it compared to BC.  Of course it is a holiday weekend and everyone is being quite laid back.  The guys took him to IHOP for breakfast yesterday and they played ball today.  I hope reality doesn't come crashing down too hard tomorrow.  It was Great to see him at PIR on Friday and I miss him greatly but it is soooooooooooo nice to be able to pick up the phone and call or get on FB and see what he's up to.

  • deniseMatt'smom

My son graduated Gulfport A school a few months ago, he is also BUCR...They enjoy much more freedom than they did in bootcamp but still must PT most mornings and Muster most nites...they march to and from class each day and are assigned "watch" weekly and once a month on the weekends....He was glad to get through it and was more than ready to move on....he got his new assignment and never had to go to combat training school in Gulfport.....once They graduate their lives become very normal except during deployment....it's a great way to enter adulthood...he's still only 19 but has bought a car through the Navy Credit Union, so he's building his credit and getting great life experience!
  • Lighthouse3 Div203 PIR5/24/13

    BUCR=???

  • Tobianne

    Builder construction recruit.
  • Lighthouse3 Div203 PIR5/24/13

Yippee!  That was my guess, but I was afraid I was wrong.  :-)  I'd never seen the BU and CR joined together before.

  • AYAMOM

My son had his pir last friday and is now at FLW a school....It is great to be able to talk to him again!

He is ready and excited for his new adventure!

  • Beachmom (Ship 13, Div 281)

Welcome!  My son is also in FLW!  His PIR was 8/2

  • yelomoon

    hello out there  :)

  • belovedbyHim

    Yelomoon--Hello. :)

  • Beachmom (Ship 13, Div 281)

    Good Morning!

  • Debi

My son is an EO and had his graduation from FLW 8/7/13. He is now stationed in Washington DC with a CBMU. I just have to giggle though..what happens when you give a big boy a steady pay check??? Answer he buys a big toy! With the help of his CM2, he purchased his new toy..an Jeep from a private seller. Now I know what he'll be doing on the weekends...fixing up his toy! lol

  • belovedbyHim

We are going to need the SeaBees in CO. soon!!!  We have so much water in places that are not used to it.  SeaBees don't mind water do they?? Prayers for the rain to stop would be appreciated!!

  • Debi

Nope beloved they don't mind water as long as they aren't stuck in grey colored metal containers that float ;) lol

  • belovedbyHim

Debi-- Nope they are red colored metal buildings that float! and House colored and car colored there are some grey colored metal containers that float that are out and about-- I believe they are calling them "Rescue Boats"!! The pictures are unbelievable!!!  lots of Roads washed away and many areas that they can''t get to right now.  It'll be interesting to see.  WOW they just said if this had been a Snow event we would have 115 inches of Snow!!!  Not sure which I'd prefer?? Snow wouldn't wash out roads but that much would impact roofs and power lines and with all the trees in full leaf we'd have lost many trees.

  • Beachmom (Ship 13, Div 281)

Prayers for everyone in Colorado.  The flooding is horrible!

  • Lighthouse3 Div203 PIR5/24/13

I want to thank all of you who have been praying for our son in his journey in the Navy and especially for the knee he injured (hyperextended) climbing a utility pole eight weeks ago.  The wonderful news is that he has been cleared by the doctor to resume his Construction Electrician training on September 26.  We are very thankful to the Lord that his knee has recovered sufficient strength to continue, and that he is able to run some, although slowly.  He will resume in the same “block” or training module in which he was injured.  We ask for your prayers, especially during those 2 ½ weeks, that he and his fellow sailors be safe and that he not reinjure his knee.  (Horrible leg and knee injuries are a regular occurrence during this particular exercise.)

  • Karen

Lighthouse3:  I am so happy to hear your son's knee has healed!  Does he pick up at the beginning of pole climbing?  He and his fellow sailors will definitely be in my prayers for those 2 1/2 weeks as I know first hand how hard they can be!

  • Lighthouse3 Div203 PIR5/24/13

Thank you very much, Karen! Yes, it is probably the beginning, although he made it through the first three days and was injured the 4th., but made it down under his own steam. It would be nice if they'd just have him watch until day 4 or 5. What block is your son in now, 6?

Today our son's class graduated, and his roommate leaves. That will mean probably a little better sleep, but more loneliness, too.
  • Karen

Lighthouse3: mMy son just took test 1 of block 6. He still has a bit to go. I am anxious for it to be over so he can come home for leave. Will your son get a new roommate? Please keep me posted on how he is doing. I will be praying for all the sailors in this group over the next 2 1/2 weeks!
  • Beachmom (Ship 13, Div 281)

Lighthouse3, Your son will be in my prayers as he continues on.  Thank goodness his knee has healed!

  • Lighthouse3 Div203 PIR5/24/13

Thank you, ladies, very much for your prayers!  At this time, he is not supposed to get a new roommate.  Karen, did your son get a new roommate when his was so badly injured and had to leave?
