Congrats John...we're all proud of you!

Need some advice.....My son is trying to sell his car so he can ship out to his next duty station. No luck so far....so as the days dwindle and he has to get rid of this car...he's looking for a junkyard to sell it to...it's a sad little' 89 Honda. Any advice from local Moms out there?
He read online the ACE pick-a-part on Main Street, was a little shady, poor customer service, etc....not too many good things were said about it...maybe just disgruntled customers?
    any thoughts?
  • Storymom

Well everybody, thanks for your input, but my son sold his car over the weekend......was able to do it on craigs list to a guy that likes to "tinker" with Hondas and needed it for parts I think! HA!
JOEY Katie's mom....it was a red 89 Honda Accord, with already a major engine repair some months ago, and just recently, an oil leak-problem-something-something that was going to be a big job too. It was losing power too, when out on the highway, so it was getting unsafe to drive. No radio, funny noises (probably lack of oil!!) It needs to be with someone who can work with its various problems....
Your daughter would NOT have wanted this car.
Good luck to her tho, she'll find something!

Hi Navy moms (and Dads, spouses, friends) - Came across this article in our local paper today and thought I would pass it on. http://www.kitsapsun.com/news/2010/jan/22/threats-prompt-navy-to-be...
  • Storymom

Jim G....I'll be thinking of your son and sending him warm thoughts and strength these next two weeks, My son has chatted with him via email or text in the last 24 hrs, by the way...giving him some last minute advice and support.
...why oh why does it have to be Maine in the winter-time??
  • lanilee528

My soon to be husband will be at JAX NAS for three years and I'm currently attempting to apartment shop from over 1,000 miles away. Any info. on best areas to search for, etc. would be GREATLY appreciated! :)
  • lanilee528

Thanks! We'll be at NAS JAX. We've heard good things about Lighthouse at Fleming Island, but the reviews are horrible. There are two in Bartram Park that we like... but still unsure. I really like the Lake Gray Apartments! The reviews are amazing as well :)
  • Mari

I haven't been on for a while but just wanted to check in to say hello to my Navy family and share with you the wonderful news that our son just graduated today from C school. Hope all your sailors are doing well.
  • 528harrison

Finally made it down to the JAX area! Just moved in with my Sailor, living in apts. in the Orange Park area. We're both from Michigan, so it's quite an adjustment... with both the heat/humidity and not knowing a single soul.
  • 528harrison

We live in the Lake Gray Apartments. My husband's an IS with VP-45.

Hello group. In reading back a little I see some familiary faces and it looks like I've landed in the right place for the next part of my sailor's journey.

Let me introduce myself to those who don't know me. I've been on N4Ms since 6/09 when my only son went to BC. I've probably missed not more than a dozen days since then of checking into N4Ms. My son in in Pensacola and just got his orders for Jacksonville. He's AWO-Acoustic.

He asked me to see if I can find the skinny on housing in Jacksonville. He's heard that base housing fills up and it's possible there won't be room for him. Does anyone live off base, and how does that work? Should he be finding something now? He's not married, and only na E-3. He reports the first part of Nov.

    Any info is greatly appreciated!
    Tee
  • Tee-1sailor's mom

BTW, he doesn't have a car, should he?
  • Tee-1sailor's mom

Are there any other groups you would recommend for his rate and stage of training?
    Thx
  • JENN 226

Hey my boyfriend just arrived last week to complete his C school, he is an AM, anyone with a loved one in a similar situation... just arriving... i cant tell he is finding in long since he doesnt really know anyone or his way around.
  • Tee-1sailor's mom

Hi everyone, just letting you know that my baby eagle has landed in Jax! Whoot Whoot!!
  • Tee-1sailor's mom

My son lives on base and doesn't have a car so he's having a rough time getting around. He's hoping to buy a pick up some time in the next few months.
  • Kalynn

SWCCWife- It's easier to just list some of the nicer areas like, Oak leaf, Flemming Island, Eagle Harbor, Manderin, but Charlene is right most everywhere else it's hit and miss good and bad neighborhoods. 103rd is a big NO NO!! Base housing is real nice. They just build/are still building 3/4 bedroom townhomes. I've been in mine for a year and LOVE it!!!
  • Kalynn

When I was on the list it took about 3 months before they offered me a house. But that was when they only had phase one open which is 73 units, they are finishing up phase 2 which is an additional 130 units and their about to demolish the rest of the old housing for phase 3. I don't think there is much of a waiting list right now, and if your on orders they usually try to give you priority and something ready when you get here so they won't have to pay to move you! Balfour Beatty Communities is the property manager call 904-908-0821 to talk to them and go to this website to see more details, pics and floorplans http://www.nasjacksonvillehomes.com/defaultFamily.aspx?cid=39

Thanks Peggy, I'll PM you. Happy Thanksgiving, and may God bless our troops and our counry.

Hey NavyDadJim, I wondered where you had gone..... :)
  • HSsweethearts

Hello EVERYONE :) My Husband and I will be moving to Jacksonville this January. We just put down our deposit on our place in Downtown Jacksonville and According to Google maps it will take about 18 mins to get to base from our place.. I was wondering how accurate that really is... We decided on The Metropolitan lofts because we really wanted to experience all jacksonville has to offer not to mention they had some great deals going on :) We are excited for the new place and wondering what are some great things to do in Jacksonville.

  • Kalynn

    Laurel,
The drive, depending on traffic is about right. The worst part of the ride will be the i10 & i95 interchange which they just redid and it's been running pretty smoothly! However, I don't mean to be a buzz kill but there's a reason there are really great deals downtown, it's not safe! Jacksonville has the highest crime rate in Florida and is pretty high on the list in the US, and majority of it happens right down town. We drove downtown once just for the firework show at The Landing and our car got broken into in a security patrolled parking garage. The cop told us that the homeless population is so big downtown that there are tons of crimes all day long. If your husband deploys it will be very scarey being there alone too! If you can still back out on your deposit, I would! Now if you want to be apart of the whole city thing try areas like, Arlington, Southside, Mandarin, even the beachs, or on the west side of town closer to the base there is Orange Park, Argyle, Flemming Island, Oakleaf, Middleburg, and of course the brand new base housing on base. Again I hate to be the rain on your parade but if it were my husband and I, we would definately want someone to tell us!
  • Kalynn

Jim, does your son happen to live in Lake Gray Apartments? We lived there for a while and we had a gator too. Laurel, hate to scare you on the gators too but Florida's got ALOT of them!
  • Kalynn

Yeah, I used to get so scared walking the dog because it was hard to see him but everytime I did see him he was staring at us...but he was only like 3 feet at the time, maintenence told us there was a 10 footer over by the bill board though. Yeah we tended to walk our dog across the parking lot in a court yard. lol But that Apartment complex is nice and good prices Laurel, especially if you have a lake front view! Another nice one close to there is The Kensley Apartment Homes, more amenities though so it costs more.
  • HSsweethearts

Thank you everyone so much for the advice :) I have lived previously in downtown Seattle and Portland in high rise's and realize when moving in to any downtown area comes crime and the homeless. We have decided to have our car in the underground parking garage which is only accessible by key card threw which you have to go through a gate to even get into the parking garage. We currently live in Pensacola, FL as of right now and feel that living in a high rise actually feels more secure and protected then in apartments. The last apartments we lived in which were 30 mins from Seattle I had my car broken into 10 feet from my bedroom window. So I honestly believe it really doesn't matter where you live whether it be downtown or the suburbs and I actually feel a lot more comfortable knowing my car is in a video monitored, gated, resident only parking garage below were we live instead of parked out in front of our home. Thank you for all your responses!

The thing that scares me is hearing about the Aircrewman who had to leave the Navy just because a computer chose his name.  He wanted to reenlist, but they said "no" even though he and his superiors wanted him to stay.  I can't imagine the discouragement that would cause, not to mention when they are counting the Navy as a career, and to be told they have to leave becuase they aren't needed after one enlistment.

Thanks for the explanation NDJ, at a live theater here the cast was smoking some type of herb to make it seem like marijuana, so I would have thought it was that.  I think it was Oregano or Sage, can't remember.

  • Tee-1sailor's mom

    BTW, VERY nice picture NDJ!!!

    (HI back Suzi!!! )

  • Suzi-OH

Our 8 year old loves his gummy vitamins. It's gotten harder for me to swallow pills as I've gotten older.

I was surprised when I asked my doctor about Spice on Monday and he had never heard of it. I've had salvia in my butterfly garden for years. I heard about it a little a couple years ago and then nothing since then.

  • Tee-1sailor's mom

Has anyone heard of the "parlors" where kids can go to breathe flavored steam?  My son was telling me they have been popular for a few years.  It seems to be a middle eastern thing.  Underage are allowed.  They go in and pick a flavor, then they breathe the flavored "steam."  Sounds like another spin on "smoking something" to me.

  • Tee-1sailor's mom

Sailormom, have you tried the powdered Vitamin C?  You disolve it in water.  Pretty bitter is you make it too strong, but you get a big dose down that way.

On drugs and such, I think part of it is just part of being young and wanting to try stuff and fit in, but our society is so much about escape, and that's not just the young.  My personal opinion is the answer is the same for everyone.  Family, Faith, Self-Esteem, Goals, Dealing with problems before they become  overwhileming. (sermon over) LOL

Suzi, it's so cool that you and BK got to meet! I love her!!!!

  • Kalynn

Parlors sounds a lot like what I've heard my friends talk about Hookah, they have Hookah bars and lounges all over the place and you go sit around and smoke hookah it can be tobbaco or tobacco free but supposedly either you can get a "high" off of.  This is the Wikipedia site explaining it some and it does say it originated in India and has gained lots of popularity in the middle east and growing elsewhere.

An Ombudsman is a  person who acts as a trusted intermediary between the families and the command.  My husband's command had two on their last deployment and I don't know how they did it all but they were AMAZING!  They e-mailed us once a week, they ran a facebook group for discussions, they arranged meet ups for us spouses and kids.  They also had immediate contact to our boys, I got in a car accident and needed information for my husbands car and I couldn't get ahold of him so and I called her and had a call from my husband within minutes!  They take on a lot of responsibilities, they are the go to people!!!

I have a quick question. I was wondering when and if at all does the navy give you the money for the move in cost associated with renting a new place such as ( Security deposits/ application fees ) and if so when should we expect that? Would it come before our move or after? And how much might it be? My husband was told he would get some money to cover those types of cost but when and if the information he received is accurate we don't know.... Our move is a little different because I moved to Pensacola while he was in training and left most of our things back home in a storage unit in Washington. So we know already that they will not move our items from Pensacola to Jacksonville because my move was not authorized by the Navy and it was a choice of my own... But we do know that they will move our stuff from Seattle to Jacksonville which is actually better for us because as I said I left most of our things behind... So it’s actually saving us a lot of money. Even with that said we are still unsure if they will be giving us some money for the moving in costs of renting a new place. Any information will help :) And yes I took your ladies advice and my husband and I have found a new place in between both malls and said goodbye to the place in downtown.

    Thanx - Laurel

  • Kalynn

Laurel, from the information I've received from other spouses on a move you will have money left over that can go towards deposits and such but it's not designated by the navy for that.

What we didn't know when we got our first apartment though is that the Navy has worked out contracts with different Apartment complexes, called the Rental Partnership Program (RPP).  This really is a great program. There are about 42 apartment complexes that are on this program.  Apartment managers contracted through RPP agree to not charge a security deposit or application fee, not conduct background or credit checks and give military personnel a discount on their rent, If the apartment is on that program they will take your rent out through allotment (directly from your hubby's check).   All apartment complexes are inspected by the Navy before they are allowed to join the program and sign a contract to ensure Sailors are not being sent to less than adequate neighborhoods, the Navy won't sign them if their prices are too high either, so all the apartments on the list are affordable on an E1-E7 income.  If you call or e-mail the welcoming center they have a list of the apartments on the program and phone numbers...for the life of me I can't find the number, but they share the same building as housing so try 904-908-0821 and just ask to speak with the front desk. Good luck! =)

    Sandra,

My husband says since he's coming in so late to just go to the barracks.  Does he have a ride from the airport?  The MWR will pick up single sailors for free and bring them to where they need to go.  Let me know if you need a number for that and I'll find it!

  • Kalynn

This was in my weekly USO e-mail, I think MWR has a van that picks them up though.  They do this during the holidays to help the single sailors get to their hometowns to see family!  Call ahead and hopefully they can have someone there ready for him!

FREE SHUTTLES TO AND FROM THE AIRPORT

Starting 1 December the NAS JAX Liberty Center will have a free shuttle service to and from the airport for the single sailors on the base. Please call 542-1335 to set up a time or for more information.

Hi  Don't know if I'm at the right group.  My son is at Jacks waiting to start C school.  He is an AS going to school for Mobile Electrician Power Generaters.
  • ckmom

My son has been @ Jacks since Dec.18 and he was very lonely no one to talk to. Everyone was home for the holidays.  He was home for the first 2 weeks of Dec., that is how it work out for him.

He said it's getting better more people are starting to show up. He went to the mall a lot and watch all the movies possible.lol

I worry a lot!!!!!!!!! also I really think it's a mom thing lol

Well a friendly hello to all fellow NAS Jacksonville moms/parents/significant others.  Was SO happy I signed on and joined this group, only to see CKmom's comment. PERFECT timing.  I have spent the ENTIRE weekend listening to my daughter cry, complain, "God how I hope this place gets better" .  She came from Pensacola, which was small in comparison of course but there was ALWAYS activitity going on there.  She arrived on the 30th so it was even worse than 12/18!  She said she walked to Redbox, yes that is ALL she did all weekend, and seen a total of 5 people.  Please folks, tell me that this base that she will call home until The Navy tells her otherwise, is full of friendly folks like Pensacola!  I told her if doesn't get better just get online and take some college credit courses.. LOL  Looking forward to catching up on all the posts here and Happy New Year to all of you.

  • ckmom

    Thanks for the welcome!! :-)))

Diana my son was in Pensacola also. Graduated Dec. 2nd. and came home for 2 weeks.  It was so good to see him and catch up on all what he did and a lot of funny stories.  While home he bought a car (MUSTANG) said his truck got terrible gas mileage on his way home from Pensacola. Ha Ha  Like a Mustang is going to get better gas milelageLOL

I'm sure this week will be a 100 times better for him.  I just felt so bad at Christmas he ate breakfast out of a vending machine and for lunch he had popcorn and soda so you know where he was and for super ate at the I Hop. Nobody on base to cook for!!   I couldn't believe that!!!  No meal for the sailors that were their... But Curtis said really I had no one to talk too!!

  • ckmom

Phone service is bad we have ATT also.  Like sandra said texting is fine most of the time but talking is another story.  We have to text him and tell him to call us. Has to go outside to call..
  • Diana

Well thank goodness it isn't just T-Mobile out there in NAS Jacksonville that is terrible!  Seems to be all services since all seemed to be mentioned.  LOL.

Sailormom: My daughter is just starting her Navy career, still E1, w/graduation from Basic in Nov. finished Pensacola in Dec. and arrived in Jacksonville on 12/30/10.

But the 10 days she was home... definite change in perspective on life and goals!  And she, as well as her father and I, are anticipating the many fun and exciting Navy ancedotes that are bound to happen as time goes on.
