The barracks on base are made of some sort of material that makes it impossible to use any service phone. When my husband was there he would leave it in the window sill and then used a blue tooth so he could walk around still.  I live in base housing on NAS and I can receive calls and text fine but I have to go outside maintain my call.

  • ckmom

Kalynn   Good idea about the phone in the window sill.  I'll have to mention that to him.
  • Tee-1sailor's mom

My son had AT&T and said in SD, & JAX he had to go outside to talk.  Verison works great, and he's heard most Sailors use it.  I was just a bummer to have to pay the cancellation fee!
  • Diana

But let's remember people.. they are in Florida so going for a walk outside to talk to us isn't so bad considering the weather..LOL.  Unlike my 4 degrees..

Peggy.. yes, she is one of the "new girls". There is another new girl from Louisana, we are from Illinois/Chgo.  She said that there is a pretty large group of them that are hanging around together after work.  Yesterday was a bonfire hosted by, small world, a boy that is from where we live now!

I got the text yesterday of "To be standing right there, when the "helos" take off.. what a feeling."

Yep, this mom's apron no longer has strings.  She is EXACTLY where she should be. :O)

  • ckmom

Diana,  You are so right they have the warm weather where we are freezing!
  • Diana

That's my girl.. a Swamp Fox.. she said her next tatoo.. (rolling my eyes)
  • Tee-1sailor's mom

Privacy and decent reception was the issue with the phone, not the weather.....
  • ckmom

Hi all, Curtis started C school today only 5 in his class.

Weather here is awfully cold and recieved 4" of snow over night.  I'm so ready for spring!!!

  • Kalynn

OMG!  So not fair...us floridians would die to see even an inch of snow!  I haven't seen any since my hubby's boot camp graduation in Great Lakes...4 years ago!  It gets VERY cold down here but no winter wonderland to follow, just rain then more cold!  I know some of you are like PLEASE you don't know cold...but anyone whos been here know 30 something degrees in florida is MUCH colder than 30 something degrees in the carolinas or what not.  Something about our humidity!   It's ok, we're always complaining about something, give it another 5 or 6 months and you'll here from your kiddos that its soooooo HOT with temperatures in the hundreds! yuk! Florida is over rated!
  • ckmom

Sailormom (missouri)  They are calling for mix stuff Sunday :-(((((((((
  • ckmom

Good morning ladies very cold here in Mo.  Does anyone have a son that is on USS Bataan.  Mine will be going around March from C school.  There site on here is not very active.

We're from Calif but it's always foggy and damp/cold here in the winter.  We've had over a month where there's NO sun, only gray.  Snow in the mountains of course, but we're in the Valley.  My grandparents people are from Indiana and my Dad was from OK.  All of us settled in Calif though....not so great now with the economy!!  I love going to the beach, but you've never felt water as cold as the ocean in No. Cal...brrrr!
  • ckmom

Sandra AM Mom   Yea I'm so glad to know someone!!!   Curtis called my husband yesterday and said he will be leaving for Norfolk the first week in March.  Do you know when your son leaves?    He also said only 5 in his class.
  • Kalynn

VP45 party! lol  My husband (AE3 Wachs) is also in VP45 an aviation electrician, for those of you, like me who have to ask your husband what's AD? lol
  • Kalynn

Yeah, when I asked my husband what's an AD he says that's a mech. lol I like your explanation better!  =)
  • ilovelucy

Well, this is goodbye.  The anticipated JAX tour of duty is not next on my son's timeline as anticipated.  Thought he would be gliding across the grand state of Florida from PCola to JAX....but was wrong.  Must now learn about another part of the country.  May sneak and peak at your JAX site at times since I love Florida!
  • Suzi-OH

Looks like I'm following out, too.....our sons have the same path.

But, I plan to hang out just in case cuz we all know nothing is ever written in stone with the Navy. ;)

  • Tee-1sailor's mom

Suzi, I still expect to see you on Safe Harbor!  Bye to both of you but only on this group!!!

    Great pic NDJ!

  • Tee-1sailor's mom

I bought my son an Entertainment Book for Jacksonville for Christmas but it was pretty small compared with the one we have....don't know why....he like it though.  I'll have to wait a bit to see if the coupons are good (he's elsewhere right now)
  • Proud Navy husband

    what's up people

i'm new to this part of the site. My wife and i recently moved here and she's currently deployed. Hopefully i can meet some of y'all through here or even on base. till then...

stay safe, positive vibes and God Bless

  • Mari

Just wanted to share with everyone that our sailor received the blue jacket of the quarter award last week.  We are very proud of him and look forward to his future success.
  • Proud Navy husband

Sailormom, my wife and i live in Orange Park too. Although she's deployed right now, we're enjoying it here.
  • Kalynn

Kudos to VP45 for getting the Safety award among all the P3 commands on NAS JAX and winning the Battle E award among all P3 commands in the South East region!  Whoop Whoop!
  • Kalynn

It's supposed to be real rainy all week and clear up friday for a nice weekend in the 60's.  Which I'm real excited about my son turns 1 Friday and his party is Saturday! =)  Course it's still so far off that it could change!  Our zip code here on base is 32212 if you have weather bug or something similar.
  • Mari

Hi Sailormom, I haven't been here for a few days but will try to answer a little on the blue jacket of the quarter award.  Its an award of merit given to the sailor who is recognized as standing out in his professional accomplishment, commitment to his job and military bearing during a three month period.  A few are nominated and then they go before a board where they are tested on their knowledge of the Navy.

@NavyDadJim, congratulations to your son and his squadron.

  • Proud Navy husband

Does anyone have family with the HSM-70?
  • Proud Navy husband

Sandra: the nex offers a tax filing, however my wife and I filed jointly on turbo tax.
  • ckmom

my son and daughter left last night to visit Curtis and going to the Daytona with him tomorrow.   Today he said he's going with a group from the base that is taking a bus.  He will be able to visit the pit area. He's really looking forward to it.

Anyone else going to the races?

Just talked to my son and asked how they were doing and where they were at.  He replied I don't know but we are heading south so we are ok I think LOL.  They are traveling from Missouri and drove all night, prayers are with them.

  • Proud Navy husband

O wow, ckmom, I'm dyin.to go to the races. But I'll be watching it from home. My prayers are with your son and family.
  • ckmom

Proud Navy husband  I'll be watching it from home also and hope maybe I'll see Curtis. My daughter said that the service men that are there get to stand with the racers for the nathional athem that get to be in the pit area.  So I guess I'll see what happens.  She really into the nascar stuff. She goes to the races when she can.
  • Proud Navy husband

I love nascar. I've been wanting to take my wife to a race cuz she thinks it's kinda boring but I keep telling her that being at the race is what really makes it fun.
  • ckmom

Proud Navy husband,  My daughter took my husband and I a couple years ago to one around St. Louis area. It's very loud but had a good time.

Sandra AM Mom- There is a free military tax place called VitaTax (phone number 904-542-8039) right outside the main gate, it shares the parking lot with the USO but it usually has REALLY LONG LINES and they don't have alot of experience for complex tax returns (itemizing, schedule C)!  There is also a trailer in the NEX parking lot that does them but it costs $, not sure how much or how great they are.  I used to work for H&R Block and if your sons just got a fairly simple return and he's ok with it I can do them for him on hrblock.com for free.  I've done quite a few for my friends and neighbors this year just to save them time & money.  I live on base in housing, just send me a message and I'll give you my phone number and address.  And yes whereever he goes to get them done he will need his W2 which he can print off of mypay, and make sure he has his routing and account number to direct deposit his refund.

Everyone else- OMG!  The USO was giving out 100 FREE ticket to military personel for the Daytona 500 and we entered the drawing but didn't win.  I was SOOOO bummed out.  I've only ever been to recreational races, not NASCAR so that would have been an amazing experience!  My neighbor won 2 tickets though.  Ateast someone gets to enjoy it! =)

  • OSWife3

My husband and I just moved down to Jacksonville and we were wondering if there are any good cheap places to go for fun or anything outdoors to do?

  • OSWife3

yes we live a few miles from NAS, and my husband is in the Navy and he is an OS
  • ckmom

Sandra AM Mom,  My son will be leaving Friday for Norfolk.  I'll be traveling with you to the next group. lol
  • ckmom

It was good chatting with you all!  Curtis is now in Norfolk called last night said everything that he brought from C school fit on the ship.   Met up with his advisery, he showed him around and said the ship is BIG everything is cool.  So I guess that means, mom don't worrry I'm fine.lol

Missing him really bad right now!  :-(

Sarah Jane - Since you are an artist you may enjoy the Cummer museum of  Arts and Gardens (www.cummer.org), I'm a photographer and I thoroughly love going to this garden!  Also you may like the Riverside Arts Market (www.riversideartsmarket.com), I've never been but heard it's great, it just reopened yesterday, it runs every Saturday in March-December from 10-4.  Also if you want a nice date night out with your son go see the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra (www.jaxsymphony.org), my husband and I have gone to see a show before and it was AWESOME!

OSWife- You and your hubby would probably enjoy all of the above.  Also you may want to join the USO's weekly mailing list, they send out e-mails that have activities that are going on in the area and they send out blast emails with free offers.  I'm not sure how I got on the list but try emailing jendsley@usojax.com that's who I get my emails from if that doesn't work their office number is 904-542-3028 and they are located right outside the main gate.  Something fun I got in this last weeks email is Harlem Globetrotters Magicians of Basketball tickets for sale for Friday, March 11 @ 7 tickets as cheap as $17 and they send $3 of that back to the USO as a donation, go to www.ticketmaster.com/event/22004561a73d3daa?did=discount password USO

There is a outdoor plane museum, walk around and check out the planes that frequent or have frequented the base. Bowling, Bingo, there's a brewhouse on base, they don't have the best sevice but great food! The marina, rent a boat and fishing gear for a little trip Thursday's military can rent canoes and kayaks for free. The gym has an indoor pool, non military patrons cost $3, shopping at the nex is always fun for shopping, also something most people don't know is there is a skeet and trap gun range on base, it costs $5 for an annual pass and then you can borrow one of the range guns and just pay for your ammo and the plastic disks that you shoot, it's open wednesday and Saturday's 10-2 I think.
  • Proud Navy husband

what's good people. Just dropping a line to say hi and i hope y'all have a great week. stay safe and God Bless
  • Proud Navy husband

it would be great to meet to Jim. message me your number so we can meet. stay safe and God Bless
  • ILivLaughLuvU

Hi! My Boyfriend is stationed in Jacksonville, but is currently deployed.  Does anyone know what to do as far as a homecoming via plane? I'm in Tennessee for school and am planning on going down to Florida when he returns =)
  • Kalynn

I would assume you don't have base access?  I can call you in a pass, and give you directions for how to get to the terminal which is typically where they come in from their deployments.  I have a few friends that have deployed husbands currently and theirs should be coming back in June, I'm a photographer so I may be there capturing that moment for them.  Who is your bf deployed with?
  • ILivLaughLuvU

No I dont have access, unfortunately. I thought as a civilian I need to have a sponsor with me on base at all times? idk. I've only been to the Jacksonville base once so thats all new to me. But that would be so awesome if you could do that! It would be greatly appreciated!! My boyfriend should be coming back in May, and Im secretly counting down the days already! I'm not sure if I'm allowed to air that his unit is gone so I'd like to respectfully not answer that question for now. I hope you understand, its just for his and his units safety! =)
  • Kalynn

Ok, I kinda have an idea of who your talking about.  I only know of 2 commands that are deployed right now and they're coming back around the sametime....unfortunately the time my husband leaves! =( But yes, I live in Base housing so they give us a special password and we can call in guest passes that don't require a sponsor.  Your lucky though, cause when I was in your shoes no one did that for me so yeah he had to walk to the gate from the barracks to come drive my car on base, and then I had to pray the entire time I was onbase driving without him that I wouldn't get caught!!!  lol  Ah the things we do for our LOVES!

  • ILivLaughLuvU

Aweh so I guess im counting down till May and you don't want May to come! But yes, the things we do! Im just scared that Im gonna drive down to Florida and he wouldnt have come back yet =/ I only get one phone call mid through his time away.. So I just have to pray that the day he gives me when he calls is the day they get back and that they dont get delayed!!

About the driving, I hope Im allowed to because my guy got his base driving privilages revoked last time I was there! Got slapped with 7 points. Which tallied from driving his friends car who had expired tags (we had no idea!) then he got an attitude with them because they were going to make me walk back to the NavyLodge while he had to drive the car to the target outside the base down the road! They eventually got someone to bring me to the lodge but he still had to run back from Target, I dont remember the time but it was dark and cold! and I was so scared! so many cop cars at once, it was a little overboard hahaha!  What sucked was having to walk to the target everytime we wanted to go somewhere! haha.

  • Kalynn

WOW!  That's a crazy experience!  Well hopefully there is nothing on your record for when I call you in a pass...and make sure you don't get in trouble this time cause it would be on my husbands record! lol

I would try to make friends with your bf's command ombudsman (a designated volunteer spouse of the command).  On my husbands last deployment, the ombudsman would give me information before my husband even knew!  It was great to be on top of things!!!  Call Fleet and Family Service Center 904-542-2766  and request contact information for her.  Also if there were to be an emergency and you needed to get in touch with your bf, the ombudsman is the quickest way to get it done!  Once you call and introduce yourself to the Ombudsman, she may ask for your contact info and they typically have a e-mail list they can add you to and they send out weekly updates on different stuff that going on!

Also I would recommend making your reservations at the Cottages soon if you want a nice place to stay with your man when he gets back!  They cost the same as the lodge but MUCH MORE comfortable.  I called them last week though and their earliest opening is April 24th and May is not far behind there!!! =)  Reservations - 904-542-3138

  • Tee-1sailor's mom

I'll be in JAX in June for a short time.  I'm SO looking forward to seeing my son....he bought a pick up, so he finally has his own wheels.  He's very jazzed about that.

Do I understand correctly that Aircrew Squadrons have Ombudman's like ships?  That would be great!

  • Kalynn

I know for sure Air Squadrons do because my husband is a P3 squadron, and I know afew friends in the p3 community and they have ombudsman.  I would assume as long as someone is willing to do the job, there will be one.  I know they have training that they have to go through because Fleet and Family Services is always trying to recruit more Ombudsman volunteers.
  • ILivLaughLuvU

Thanks Kalynn, yeah I dont see as to why Id have anything on my record. There's cottages? I havnt heard of them before...
