so i would like to keep my Son for a few more days but the Navy said no.....hmm kind of greedy with him i think.  It's been a great visit with him this year.  It amazes me to see how muture he is, well around me anyway, lol... I have to say after all the tears and begging for him not to join i am so  proud of him and all that he has done.  And this is just the begining.  I know you are all feeling the same about your Sailors too.  Hope you all have a great day!

Dunesmom, I have moved here to Florida and is 3 hours away from Jax, if you need me for anything let me know..
  • navymom3

My son is heading to Japan soon and he has an Iphone. They say it will work if it is an unlocked one. But to call home on it he would still need an international plan. I am having my son get a japan phone to use when in Japan to call buddies in Japan. That is what was suggested. My son also will have shore duty. When is your son heading over to Japan? Mine goes in January.
  • navymom3

jsrmom- My son is going to Yokosuka in January. His c school starts on monday in pcola. They say it's not a cold there in the winter. He will be there for 3 years I believe. We also have AT&t and not sure what we are going to do yet. He just exchanged his i phone for a new one using his warranty he had bought. We will have to call them when he is home for thanksgiving and see what they say.

Great day at the Blue Angels show yesterday, was so glad to be with my son.
  • navymom3

Aircrewmom- We were there also with my son. He works in the first big building that you walked past to get to the show.
  • Dunesmom

Hello All!  Sounds like things are moving right along for our Sailors.  My Son said P'cola is pretty nice in the winter, now that comes from a guy that lives in the north with snow.  It was one of the things he missed about home.  He was the guy driving around in the snow blizzards looking for people stuck in the ditch.  Yep he pulled out a few.  I'm sorry to say that i have never gotten to see the Blue Angels.  Some day.  Oh Jim i bet you are just getting so excited to see you Sailor, how long has it been?  Do any of you have plans to see your Sailors for Thanksgiving?  Us? nope he is waiting to come home for Christmas and yes all that snow:)  Have a Great Day Everyone!

  • gabbyhat

Hi Dunesmom...funny bout the snow...lived up north for 12 years(MD and CT) and it was pretty, but sure didn't like living in it(from TX)...lol. My dtr who is waiting inJAX to class up for C school is coming home for Thanksgiving!! With her fiancé, so he can meet her TX relatives...can't wait! Don't know when I will see her after that, but we will have XMAS and Thanksgiving at the same time...glad you will see your boy at Christmas!
  • navymom3

Both of my sons will be here for Thanksgiving. My older son who is stationed NAS JAX hasn't been with us for 4 years. My middle son is coming from Pcola to be here for Thanksgiving. Last one for him for probably several years as he will be in Japan.

  • ZZsMom

Hi everyone.  My daughter finishes up A School (AM) in Pensacola on December 15. She just found out yesterday she will be coming to Jacksonville but doesn't have a timeline since her orders haven't shown up online yet.  I am a want to understand everything kind of Mom so no doubt I will be asking lots of questions.  Anyway, hello and I am looking forward to meeting you all!

  • navymom3

zz- My son said your daughter will be working in a different shop than him. Brittany proud navy wife's husband will be stationed here also. But he is not done with school until Jan I think.

  • ZZsMom

Awesome!  Glad to see some familiar faces!

  • Brittany proud Navy Wife :)

We are here now ;) He graduates Cschool this month actually and then reports to his command here

  • navymom3

Brittany- which command is he going to be under? My son says there are multiple commands here. And did you get base housing or do you need help finding a place?

  • Brittany proud Navy Wife :)

Base housing has a really long wait list. We rent a house. He will be with VP30

  • ZZsMom

My daughter will be VP30 also! Question for the veterans, is she going to meed her car?
  • navymom3

zz'smom- I would say yes she needs her car. It is a huge base and not sure about any transportation on base.

  • gabbyhat

Zzsmom...I second navymom3's recommendation....def need a car....my dtr got on base mid Oct....had been in Pcola for almost a year without a car, but got by....JAX much larger base and Jacksonville, much bigger city....my dtr 's father and grandfather drove her car down from Pennsylvania several weeks ago God love em, and she was thrilled.....
  • navymom3

Anyone that has a sailor stationed NAS JAX that doesn't have a place to go for Thanksgiving I have open seats. Just let me know.

  • gabbyhat

Thank you navymom3 for your warmth and generosity in opening your home to sailors who can't get home for Thanksgiving....you r truly a 'gem'....
  • ZZsMom

Thank you all. Now to figure out the logistics of getting it there.
  • Brittany proud Navy Wife :)

Def need a car. Everything is much more spread out than PCola

  • erinlynn87(7/289)

Hello everyone! My husband and I will be moving to Jacksonville in February! Any suggestions on apartments in the area that are nice, safe, and not too far away from everything?!

  • navymom3

Welcome erinlynn- The Fleming island area is a nice place to live. There are lots of places to shop and not far from the base. Check out militarybyowner.com for rentals or try hovergirl reality. We found our house on militraybyowner as it is houses being dols or rented by military families. We live in Middleburg just on the edge of Orange Park and Fleming Island.

  • Brittany proud Navy Wife :)

erin if u call housing they have a huge list, you can ask for one with apts or houses. Fleming Island is nice but in my opinion to much of a drive. We rent a house close to blanding off argyle.

  • Dunesmom

Hope Everyone is having a wonderful Thanksgiving.  Just got a call from Dune and he is pretty thankful, as am I too, for being invited to share in the Thanksgiving of a fellow crewmans Family.  Said he even got to carve the turkey.  Thank you so much to this family for giving my Son a bit of home for the Holiday.  :)

  • 20100510navymom

I too am grateful for the family that is sharing Thanksgiving with my son.......Thank you to all of those opening their homes to our sons and daughters!

  • Mari

    Anyone else's son in VP26?

  • ZZsMom

So who can help me with Navy talk? My daughters orders say that she is to report to Jacksonville on Jan 1. Graduates PNS on Dec 15.  What happens with her in the interim?

  • navymom3

ZZ-The time in between is her leave time to go home and visit.

  • ZZsMom

So would it be leave that she has or would it be leave that doesnt count against her?

  • navymom3

It will be leave that is counted against the leave she has earned so far.

  • ZZsMom

Thank you.  Now a different question, what are the barracks like at Jacksonville?  Are they apartment type with shared kitchens, seperate bedrooms or is it more a dorm room with everyone together and only a microwave and mini frig?

  • navymom3

I don't know how the barracks are. Even though my son is single he lives off base.

Maybe someone else knows what they are like??

  • Brittany proud Navy Wife :)

I dont know what the inside is like exactly. I know they have a mini fridge and a desk and a bed I know the outside is nice, and that they are way less strict on the guys than Aschool barracks.

  • Brittany proud Navy Wife :)

ZZs she can take leave until she reports or she can report early up to her. My hubbys orders said nlt Dec 7th to report to his command, but he reported the day he was seperated from his school house he in jax, so he could save leave for christmas.

A guy just walked in who lives in barracks, its dorm room style, mini fridge, micowave, and roommate. Some rooms have all new furniture, said they are really clean... UNLESS they are Aircrew. Aircrew has apt style barracks

  • Dunesmom

my Son is Aircrew and i know there is a common area for cooking/baking.  It's where he cooks steaks for his crew.  He has a microwave and fridge and a roommate not.  He sure was enjoying the room to himself but when he got back from SERE tada... and i hope everything is clean with all the duty everyone is doing.  Or is that just what i'm being told, ha ha...

  • ZZsMom

She is an AM so I don't think she is Aircrew.  She has gotten lucky so far at A School that she hasn't had a roommate but does get a little down sometimes with no one to talk to. Guess it is better than having a roommate from hell! She is just getting really tired of microwave meals and the Mess Hall.  I was hoping that she might get a real kitchen or perhaps the ability to have a convection oven.  Doesn't sound like that is going to be the deal.  Guess she better hurry up and take that E4 test so she can house of base.   Thank you everyone for all your quick answers, it sure does help.

  • navymom3

ZZ- My son's first roommate at NAS was his buddy from BC which was great. Then when they went to Corry he ended up with a different roommate. He was an IT. Kept leaving his hair trimmings on the floor in the bathroom. My son said they got a hit on it when they started random inspections. He asked him to clean it up but he didn't of course. My son finally decided it was easier to clean it up daily then get a hit. He was happy when he graduated and left. He then had no roommate since middle of sept until last week just before leaving for thanksgiving. Again another IT so we will see. He told my son he would be gone by monday as he was going to be put in the IT barracks. My son enjoyed his time with no roommate. Said he would live with this one for the next 2 weeks as that is when he finally grads c school. I bet it would get boring after a while with no roommate. Mine has been there so long now I don't think he spends a lot of time in his room anymore.

  • Dunesmom

Heard from my Son last night, his Grandma passed away so we had a good talk.  Then he informed me that he will not be able to come home for Christmas.  Has to stay and do whatever for VP30 over the holidays.  You know i was pretty upset at first but the more i thought about it it will allow another Sailor to go home and maybe they haven't been for a while.  it will be different but we'll see him hopefully in April.  Take care All

  • navymom3

dunesmom if he needs a home cooked meal or anything my house is open. my middle sailor will be here next sat for leave before heading to japan. But my older son works at NAS not sure which building. I know it's the first building on the left as we walked into the air show.

Sorry about his Grandma passing away. I am sure she lived a long happy life.

  • Brittany proud Navy Wife :)

Dunesmom is he staff or student at VP30?? my hubby is staff.. they have two holiday leave shifts. the first is off the 16 thru the 27th and the second the 23 thru jan 3... IF they have the leave days to take off... Everyone gets the 23-27th off not going against leave, and the 31 thru the 3rd.

Personally we arent going home this year since we dont have the money so hubby isnt using any of his leave so hell just get the christmas and new years days off

  • Dunesmom

He is VP30 student, actually starts class tomorrow and i'm excited for him!  Said he is going to have his butt worked off at PT..which is good as boot was not what he expected.

  • Brittany proud Navy Wife :)

My hubby said the same thing! he gained wait in boot. but they dont pt staff so he is getting back into the gym

  • navymom3

My older son is on night shift and they don't pt. But his day shift does. He goes back on days in 2 weeks so he isn't looking forward to the pt again but he needs it. Had to buy new dress blues for his inspection.

He works in building 1000 he said. Maybe your sailor have seen his car. He has a white EVO with camo fenders. He loves his car. LOL

  • ZZsMom

What does my Sailor have to do to get her car on base?  Request a CHIT, get tags, or just show up with it?  Does she have to phase up before she can have her car?

  • navymom3

zzmom- My son said there is a building on the right just before she goes through the gate and she can get the pass for her vehicle. He said if she tries to go through the gate they will tell her to go there. If the office is closed they will get her a temp pass and she will need to do it the next day. There is no special stuff except the registration and ins card in her name.

  • ZZsMom

Is the sticker something she can do at the NAS here while on leave or it has to be from her permanent station?
  • navymom3

Does she have her car at NAS pcola? If so then she can get one there but will need to get another one at her new duty station. My son had to get a new one when he got to NAS Jax.

  • Kalynn

ZZsMom - I would wait till after leave, usually pass and decal won't give you decals unless you have orders for the base.  If you're just on leave or visiting you'll get a pass.  I assume Pcola would do the same thing.  If her car is not in her name make sure she has a notorized letter giving her permission to use it, my hubby ran into that problem fresh out of bootcamp when his car was in his dad's name.  Also make sure insurance, registration and drivers license are still in date!  Pass and decal is open from 7am-3pm and is busy the whole time, normal wait time is 30 mins to an hour, so make sure she has everything in order her first attempt!  I live on base, so I have guests come often and Pass and decal can be one pain in the butt!
