Kalynn we like scenic and touristy. I need to engage her into the local culture. If she doesn't get a jump start she will never go anywhere but the base, grocery store and the mall!
Thanks Dunesmom....yes, met him last May in Pcola...he is currently finishing up the AIRR program out in SD, hoping for orders in a coupla weeks...so hoping for east coast so they can at least be on same coast and timezone if not at the same base...thye also spent Thanksgiving with here in TX so he got to meet all the TX family...he's a great kid!
ZZ'sMom i just talked to my Son and he said yep your daughter needs to get out and see JAX. tell her don't be shy, and if she needs someone to talk to just look him up and he will intro her to a bunch of others. My Son is one of those people who can talk to anyone about any topic and make them feel welcome. Has she started her schooling yet?
Thanks Marybeth- It is actually for gabbyhat as her daughter is getting married.
Dunesmom I think zzsmom is going to be here this weekend with her car. Maybe you could have your son meet up with them and break the ice.
ZZsmom make sure you pack some warm clothes as it is suppose to be cold this weekend. It was 75 today but the temp is suppose to drop friday night to 32 and a high of only 57 on sat and sunday.
i hear it's a long weekend for many this weekend, Monday off too. I'll let my Son know to look for a gal that has a Mom visiting this weekend. Maybe they can figure out who each other is.
I hope it's warmer in April down there i'm looking forward to some walking on the beach and kyaking when we get there.
We are getting a big ol snow storm tonight... first one of the season
Dunesmom winter has actually been pretty good. We have only had to turn the heat on for 3 days so far. All the others we have had windows open and most of the time at night also. And it will be nice and warm come April. So plenty of time and sun walking on the beach.
You all are great! My husband and I are about 4 hours out of Jacksonville now and have settled into Jameson Inn in Ozark Alabama. Awesome room especially for $63 a night. And don't worry, I never leave home without a good jacket. ;)
ZZsMom - Sorry I haven't been on anymore this week to give you idea of activities for this weekend, it's been one hectic week! I'm so glad you all have enjoyed my local favorite food restraunts! Here's some destinations you might wanna hit up while your here:
Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens - www.cummer.org - very beautiful right on the river, perfect spot for some pictures!! =) Also you'll drive through a small towny area called 5 points or riverside, lots of cute little shops.
Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens - www.jacksonvillezoo.org - not been there but heard great things, it's on my to do list before we PCS.
Museum of Science and History - www.themost.org - also not been but on my to do list. Last I heard the bodies exhibit was there!! =) Mosh is right downtown which is a nice area to visit, it's right across the river from the landing which is very nice! They have a mall type set up inside, some mall type shops, some crafter stands, a food court and some other restraunts there. At night the main street bridge lights up blue, that's Jacksonville's most notable bridge instead of seperating like a normal draw bridge the whole center rises up!
Also downtown this weekend at the Jacksonville Times Union Center there will be 4 performances of the broadway show wicked and 1 performance of the Jacksonville Orchestra. My husband and I were able to go to the orchestra once and we absolutely loved it. Have your daughter check with the ITT office tomorrow to see if they have any discounted tickets for any of the performances. Check out the times and such at www.jaxevents.com
It's supposed to be rather cold this weekend but if your craving a walk on the week, our favorite is Huguenot Beach - you can drive on it and it's a best kept local secret beach so pretty quiet....My mother in law likes to go there to collect sheels! =)
Also there is the St Augustine touristy stuff, your daughter can get you some great deals there! the trolly is usually buy one get one for military, and most of the attractions are discounted or free, and your trolly pass is good for 3 days, and my favorite part about going to St Augustine is the outlet mall right off of 95!! =)
Also right here on base, take a walk through the outdoor plane museum, there's a small nature walk on Mustin road near the lodge across from the golf clubhouse, there's some nice river side docks and pavilions to enjoy lunch at, there's also a great view point up near the marina to look out at the river and bridge - even has one of those site seeing binoculars. There's a nice long nature trail that wraps the back side of base housing featuring the more naturey side of NAS JAX - trail head on Childs Street and the other trail head is on Mustin Road. We have bowling, bingo, and the budweiser brewhouse restraunt also right here on base.
This should give yall some good ideas to make a game plan for the weekend! I just found out my hubby's working 7am-7pm tomorrow so my day just freed up if yall want a tour guide for here on base, just let me know!! =) Hope yall have fun this weekend!!!!
Wow Kalynn those are some great suggestions, i'm going to safe them for our trip down. It's so nice when there are people that know the area it so helps for those of us who have tons of questions. I know your post is for ZZs but it sure is helping me too... Thanks:)
Ya thanks Kaylynn it even helps me and we live here. LOL but only been here 11 months and haven't been out much except rides on the motorcycle. So we go were ever the ride is to.
Just got in from the air. Wish I could have stayed longer. Kalynn...WOW ....thank you! All your suggestions that we had time for were right on. I have forwarded all the others to my daughter who says she will be doing them all since they came from you! I need yo get you two together. Again, thank you!
So glad you had a wonderful time ZZ's.... How is your girl doing? Did you tell her to get out and about? When you get time let us know all about it. Also happy you made it back safely.
I have missed all of you this week. We had a major upset at work this week so getting onto the internet isn't as easy for me anymore.
We had a wonderful time seeing the girl. She seems to be getting out and about a little more since she has her car. She reported to her sqadron Tuesday afternoon to find there aren't any orientation classes until next month so it looks like little week long classes for her and a few others until then.
They told her Tuesday that she would be moving from student barracks to a more permanant room but she still hasnt gotten a new key under the door!
I have to suggest to everyone if you havent gotten the chance to visit St. Augustin DO! Awesome town. And the trolley gives military a buy one get one free on the basic package.
We also stopped at a roadside stand and bought strawberrys and oranges...AWESOMENESS!
I am already planning my next trip. Probably early April. I don't know if we will stay in the area or drive up to Charlston but I am excited.
I hope to be able to talk to you all soon. A big thank you to Kalynn...you rock! And I would love for you and my daughter to meet!
ZZsmom= Glad you had a great time. Wish it was warmer when you were here. It was 77 today and suppose to be a beautiful weekend. Still getting cold at night though. I have not rode the trolley in St Augustine yet but plan on it when my mom comes to visit in April. We were down there though when they lit the Holiday lights. It was pretty cool thing to see. Glad you have are planning another trip soon.
Sounds like a great trip/visit ZZ's so happy for you.
I do have a question about Jacksonville.... are there any auto shops, reasonable, honest and quick in the area? Three different things went out on his car and he is pretty down. He went to the subaru shop and they told him 1500. to fix it for him. If he were home his Dad could help him put the parts on but down there no tooles or experience with his car on his own.
Dunesmom my son does work on cars on his days off from the Navy. He is pretty good. He does all his own work and has many awards for his car. He is very reasonable. What is wrong with his car and what kind does he have?
Dunesmom my son's friend did recognize your son. He said ya I know him he is a good kid. He hasn't been here long. I sent you a friend request so I can give you my son's cell number for your son.
Thanks Ladies and navymom i'll go check that right out. Dune was so excited to finely get that car.. Subaru, has wanted one since he was 12. He and another buddy put the new exhaust on after Christmas, his gift from us, and then kaput went the clutch, flywheel and something else. Thank you so much for the kind words from your Son. We think he is a pretty good guy also.

And ZZ'smom, I would love to meet your daughter. We won't be around much longer, we just got our orders to move in March to NAS Patuxent River, Maryland, but I always love making new friends and with the way our lives are in the Navy friends always seem to cross paths again at somepoint!

Great information Kalynn!!! will be passing this on to my Son for sure, that is if he will ever call me back;). Sounds like some fun thing to do for those that are down there, will pass that along too.
If anyone needs me to pass along a hug to their Sailors in April let me know. Dune said i am not allowed to go along and hug everyone i see. I keep telling him that their Moms would want them to get a Momma hug:)
Finely heard from Dune! The flight went great, he loved it and did not get sick. Said it was the pilots second flight. and.... he got his car fixed. Yep he is a happy young man. Just wanted to share:)
Hope you All are having a great start to your weekend!
Hi everybody....well, the wedding plans have cganged....my girl's fiance got orders to remain in SD, not Norfolk....so not getting married in May...probably in the next couple of months...soooooo, she is working on finding JOP or something else, and it will probably be a short weekend dash to JAX, at the last minute...he hasnt checked into his new command yet, so can't ask for leave til that time...which is why so much uncertainty...she has talked to her chiefs bout situation...they have told her to just get married, and then they will talk again...whatever THAT means......oh the 'needs of the Navy'....remember it well from when I was in years ago....hasnt changed much...lol!
dunesmom ya he loves his car very much. He bought it just before he went out to sea for 7 months. Put it in a storage unit until he got back. And spent most all of his money while out to sea on parts for it. It used to be white then white with digi camo fenders. He has had it this color for a week now. He has won lots of trophys with it. And he does all the work himself.
My oldest and youngest love cars. My middle son who is in Japan could car less. He just got himself a very nice guitar. And didn't get his drivers license until age 20. The youngest who is 15 thinks he knows all about cars and can't wait for his license. LOL
Yea Jim did you miss us? Oh look at that plane! wow Dune has been flying on the P-3 for now but thinking this is the next step. WOW look at that plane!
Ya I saw that the P8 was here getting ammo'd up. I asked my son if he would be switching over and working on them. He said not at this time. Eve though they are getting rid of some of the p3's they are still going to have them for a log while. Also said that Boeing has a 10yr contract to fix everything that goes wrong with them. But right now his shop is supper busy cause as they sell some of the p3's everything have to work perfect on each one before it leaves. So they have been getting in all kinds of stuff to check out. He has been tired when he gets home from work.
Just got back from my sons graduation in Jax......very cool to see inside the plane. The graduation was very nice, much bigger than I thought. About 30 graduates! Congratulations to all!!!!!!
Jackie m son had verbal orders about a month before a school graduation but he is ctm so they might be different. He didn't get his written until just after graduation. Mine was not able to leave right after grad as he ended up with c school even though he had 6 weeks to wait until it started. He could have came home for part of it but had a good on hold job and didn't want to loose it. Most of the class got to leave after graduation. My son is now in Yokosuka Japan. It was sort of his first choice he wanted overseas. He finished top of his class so he got to choose from Japan and washington state. When you son gets his orders he will need to request to take his leave before reporting to his duty station. They can take what they have earned so depends on how long he has been in. The earn 30 days per year. If they are going overseas sometimes they will let them go in the hole but most don't want to.
If you plan on staying the weekend and your son gets to leave he can spend it showing you around. Until your flight back. If he stays you will be there to spend the weekend with him. Hope this helps.
Just got back from spending five days with my sailor dtr in JAX....nice base, met alot of her buddies and got a tour of a P3 and alittle of VP-30...everyone(instructors) very nice..stayed at the Gateway Inn in one of those suites on the water...very pretty...just wish the weather had been a little more cooperative,,,rainy, but I guess tis the season...she is starting her fourth week of AWF training...long way to go...so hopefully will be planning another visit soon...
gabbyhat glad you had a nice visit. Sorry the weather was rainy when you where here. But we needed the rain. At least it wasn't snow. Let me know when you come again so we can meet up.
Great questions, great answers. So glad that graduation and all visits were good. Well how could they not be good, you all got to spend some time with your Sailors:) sure makes me smile. Jackie are you going to see Dan for Easter? We will be heading down the end of the month to see Dune. He called last night and said we are all set up at the Gateway. I can hardly wait!
I hear ya Jackie, i have been having a real hard time not seeing my boy. I rarely get to talk to him, such crappy service for those phones and well he is busy i'm sure doing what he's doing. Hang in there May is right around the corner. when we go down there Dune said he would let me meet his friends this time so warn Dan that i'm a hugger and i'll give him a hug from his momma:)
Anyone else want me to give a momma hug to their Navy kids? Oh i could embarrass Dune so bad ha ha ha...
Ok anyone who is in Jacksonville would you go outside and as loud as you can sing to my Son. It's his birthday today and he has his phone shut off or has lost it again. Thanks bunches:)
I did it just for you Dunesmom!! :) loud and clear from NAS JAX base housing, even had my 2 year old join in- his version - "happy day to you, happy day to you, happy day to duuuuuuuunnnnne, happy day to you!" lol

Ok, sorry I took so long to respond with this info, hopefully it can still be helpful to someone! There is a "Auto Skills Center" here on base (904)542-3227. It's a complete auto shop with 22 service bays, and a ASE-certified master mechanic available for asistance. Hours of Operation are Monday, Thursday, Friday 12-8pm and Sat, Sun 9am-5pm. My hubby goes there to do all the maintence on our cars, they have all the tools you will possibly need, very helpful, somethings cost a little bit (like to use the big lift, I think was $4), still saves ALOT of money!! There is also the Navy Exchange Autoport - (904)777-7147 which I think is what ZZ'smom noticed, they do sell goodyear, but they are a do it all service shop...we've noticed prices aren't much different than off base, but they don't try to sell ya stuff you don't need and no tax of course!!
