Ahsley, we live on base. It's awesome! Where do you live?

  • Evie (Brett's Wife)

Welcome to Jacksonville, Emily! Where are you and your husband living right now?

  • navymomfromCT (Ship 11, Div.037)

navymom3....he found the USO and they are sending a taxi for him....he has to pay for it but at least he knows where he is going.....off for another adventure!!

  • navymom3

navymomfromCT I am sure he will have a great time here. If he needs anything let me know. Even if it's just a home cooked meal. It is hot a muggy today. He will even like it when he gets to Japan. My middle son just got approved to move off base in Japan. He is very excited to do that and have a place of his own.

  • EmilyDanielle(12/074)

Hi guys! Right now, we're living in an apartment right off base. We're on the waiting list for base housing. I can't wait to move there. I've seen all the houses and they are beautiful! I'm not really happy about where we are now, but it's only temporary. But just some advice if you're looking for somewhere to live, don't even go look at the apartment complex a mile from base, Madison at Savannah Oaks. It's awful.

  • TrumbullCTMom

Thank you all for your advice about what to do in Jacksonville this weekend.  I just finished packing and I'm leaving at 5 am tomorrow.  I can't wait to see my son. It's hard to believe that he's been gone for six months already.  I've made arrangements to go kayaking with him on Sat. and I'll definitely check out Trentons.  I appreciate your good wishes.  Best regards, Jeanne

  • Evie (Brett's Wife)

Hey girls, Emily--I heard that Madison isn't the best area to live. Which you would think so since it's right next to the base! We have been through our share of awful places to live. Our fist apartment was across the bridge in a very nice area but the rent was too high. Then we moved to an apartment complex called Westridge on 103rd St.....I highly recommend that no one lives over there. Then we moved into a rental house off of Normandy and Cassat....HUGE MISTAKE, lol. This is awful, we have moved so many times in hopes that we would be in a safe area. Fortunately we put in for Base Housing in May of 2011 and we got a call from them and moved in in July of 2011!! We absolutely love the house and I must say, it feels good to accidentally leave our door unlocked. I hope that you guys get a call soon! There are people moving out of these neighborhoods left and right over here. You'll be happy soon enough! Patience :)

Ashley--I have a 2 year old son named Max! He's on the waiting list to get into the daycare on base....so far the process has been a joke. He's been on the waiting list since last September....blah.

  • EmilyDanielle(12/074)

We're number 47 on the list to that's about a four month wait. No kids yet, it will be a while before any of that. Haha. :)

  • Evie (Brett's Wife)

Charlene!!!! Haha how funny is this! We still need to go for our walk! Ashley-- I'm hoping that my son gets accepted soon. I'm starting my cosmetology school in august and I'll be a full time student. Fingers crossed that he gets accepted by then! Otherwise, I don't know what else to do. Hope you all had a great day!
  • navymomfromCT (Ship 11, Div.037)

navymom3.....thank you.....my sailor sounded bummed today......he says not much to do at the Jacksonville base compared to Pensacola base.....everybody has a car and can go off base whenever they want....hopefully he will find some friends who stay on base to hang with.....its going to be a long three months.....he cannot wait to get to Japan on August 30......How far are you from the Jacksonville base???

  • navymom3

navymomfromct we are 14 miles from base. I am sure once he gets settled he will make some friends to hang with. Maybe he doesn't know where everything is yet. It is a large base. Here is the link for the jax mwr fb page. They post stuff all the time.

navymomfromCT I just saw this page also. They post events they are putting on for the sailors. Looks like they went to Disney, a Suns game and there are pics of a rec room also. Hope this helps.

    Zz what is her rate?

  • Becky

Tee-1sailor's mom, thanks a million. I've already been there, but not alot of chatter.

My son is currently in SERE, and will move to NAS Jax in a couple of weeks for C school. He thinks he will be there about 9 months, but I'm sure it will depend on when he classes up. Where is your sailor? It's fun to follow all of this, isn't it.

  • Tee-1sailor's mom

@Becky, mine just returned to JAX from deployment.  It's his permanet base...well as permanent as it gets in the Navy. LOL  He's an AWO.

  • Becky

Tee-1sailor's mom, Hopefully you get to visit him often. Mine is AWV and once things settle down I will be heading to Jax. for a visit. How long was your son on deployment? That must be rough.

  • EmilyDanielle(12/074)

Do any of the wives get together around here? I'd live to meet you guys, I don't know anyone here.
  • Becky

Does anyone know if the sailors there for C school can have food in their barracks? I'm trying to put together a goodie box and I don't want to get him in trouble. Also any input on what the rooms are like will be helpful.

  • Tee-1sailor's mom

From what my son describes, the rooms are a lot like college dorms.  Usually 2 to a room.  They can have food but only as much as can be kept in a small fridge and their limited storage space.  They have a microwave too.  Eating healthy and not spending a lot of $$ was a real challenge for him because they often aren't around when the Galley is open due to work schedules.  I don't know how many rates that applies to but it did to mine.

Becky, 6 months...and yes it was hard.

  • Kalynn

Yes they can have food. They have a fridge and microwave in their room. My hubby's room there a long time ago was a room for 2 alot like a hotel, you walk on and there's a bathroom they share, they each get a closet, a dresser and a twin bed and nightstand. They have to keep it clean for inspections and such. It's recommended to sanitize it and use your own set of sheets cause there isn't really house keeping, and there have been issues with bed bugs. Hope this helps!
  • Becky

Thanks one and all for the room information...even about the bed bugs. I hope you all get to see your sailors often.

  • Tee-1sailor's mom

Emily, if your husband is assigned to a Squadron, there is usually an active Family Support Group where wives and kids get together for activites.  You can find it by Google it online for an offical page and contact the Ombudsman, or do a Facebook search..

  • ZZsMom

Becky, I sent you a friend request.  Once you accept it I will be happy to send you photos of my daughters room.  She isnt aircrew, and if I remember correctly their barracks are a little different, but it will give you a good idea of what your son will have room for.

  • Becky

ZZs Mom - Thanks a million. As soon as I get it I will respond. Can't wait to see pics of your daughter's room. Boys don't share so I have to depend on everyone else.

  • Becky

Do any Moms out there know if the sailors on base have a physical address. He has only sent a PO address. UPS and Fed Ex will only deliver to a physical address. Thanks.

  • Kalynn

You can have it sent to your sailors command. Contact your sailors Ombudsman for the address. Ombudsman are a designated spouse in the command who is acting liaison between the families and the command, they carry a great wealth of information, very resourceful and in an emergency can have you in touch with your sailor in no time at all no matter where they are! It's good to touch base with the ombudsman and give them your contact information cause they typically have a once a month e-mail they send out updating you on the command. Look up your ombudsman at:
    https://ombudsmanregistry.org/?m=login
The address may even show on this website too!
  • Tee-1sailor's mom

    Is everyone OK back there???

  • navymom3

Tee we are doing good here. The lake is almost gone in my backyard. Some of the neighbors down the street still have lakes in there front yard. They say we got about 12-15 inches of rain. Still several roads closed due to high water.

  • Tee-1sailor's mom

Happy to hear it's receeding.  navymom3  We used to have flooding in my town almost every year but just from heavy rain, not hurricanes.  My sailor got back there safely too!

  • velvetlace

    Hello-

I am new to this particular blog.   Mhy cub is a corpsman at JAX Naval Hospital.  We live in Northern California, so we have not seen him for almost a year.  We miss him so much!
    Mary

  • navymom3

welcome velvetlace. My oldest sailor is stationed her at NAS JAX and we also live just outside Jacksonville. My middle sailor however is in Japan so I know how you feel about missing them. We have only lived near the oldest for the last 1 1/2 yr.

My dad lives in Ukiah, my Aunt in Chico and other family in San Jose and Modesto.  I lived in the Ukiah area when I was little. If your sailor needs anything let me know.

  • Maria ( 9/132 - HM- 04-2011)

Mart, we used to live in so cal. Moved to Tx about 18 years ago.
  • Maria ( 9/132 - HM- 04-2011)

Oops darn keyboard. Meant to say Mary sorry :)
  • Dunesmom

Good Morning!  How are you all?  For those that live in Jacksonville, could you tell me if the cell phone towers are out or if the first floor of the barracks have flooded?  I have not been able to get ahold of my Sailor for quite some time.  He was having a bit of a tough time last i talked to him.  Hope all is well with Everyone:)

  • navymom3

Dunesmom we have not had any issues with our cell phones. I know in soe areas of the base there is not good service. I don't know if the barracks flooded. My son lives off base and has not said that he heard anything. Sorry about that. Our water is all gone now but some areas by some creeks and rivers are above flood stage. But none near or on the base.

  • ZZsMom

@Dunesmom my daughter is on the first floor and there was water about a foot into the hall but she said it had receeded by morning.   As far as the phone issues we always have them.  We have AT&T and my daughter was told that Sprint actually has towers on base so I guess it depends on your carrier.  If you don't hear from him I wonder if you could contact his squadron to see if they have an Ombudsman that could help you.  Good luck.
