HI Mary, I kept meaning to tell you mine is at JAX but never had the chance.

Dunes, my son has always had issues with his cell phone in the barricks.  He swttched from AT&T to Verison for that reason.

He called on Sunday and was really excited about finding an apartment off base.  Not for sure yet, but hoping for him.  (He didn't say anything about flooding).

  • gabbyhat

Hi ladies....ditto on the cell phone issues....my dtr has Verizon, is on second floor of the barracks, and almost always has to go outside for good connection....she usually calls me Friday evening in her car somewhere going out to dinner....during the week, just too busy studying....

Am sure glad not too much water....:-)
  • eljac913 (Ship 12 Div 053)

Hi everyone, my sailor recently came to Jax.  He is adjusting to his new Navy life and so are we.  We are outside of .  Happy to join this group.

  • velvetlace

    Hi, Tee-1sailor-

My cub is a corpsman at JAX stationed at the naval hospital.  My son has had problems with the US Cellular phone so he has another phone with another carrier....not sure which one.

Happy Fourth of July to all!

    Mary

  • Tee-1sailor's mom

Mary, I've seen you in the No Cal group (I'm in Sacramento) that's why I said hello.  Is the Hospital inside the gates?  I've been to the base a few times and don't remember seeing it.

Gabbyhat, the same with mine.  He always had to go outside to get good reception.

    Welcome eljac913.

  • velvetlace

I believe the naval hospital is inside the gates of the base.   I have never been there myself since we live in Northern California.

  • eljac913 (Ship 12 Div 053)

    Thank you Tee-1sailor'smom.

  • Dunesmom

Heard from my Airman/Sailor... Phone took a poo on him.  the battery is good but that's it.  this is his third phone in less than two years, ugh.  Will be sending another as i can not stand not being able to hear his voice.  We also have verizon and he said he always has to go outside to call, when he could.  Studying like crazy, flying like crazy and just trying to get to graduation  about 6 weeks left if things go good.  Car needs a new trannie and is 4500. to get.  so much on his plate right now and not much i can do from way up here.  I guess that's all part of this journey.  Hope all is well with you and your Sailors:)  Have a great day!

  • navymom3

dunesmom have him contact my oldest sailor on his car issues. I will send you his info in a PM. He might be able to find him a cheaper way as he works on cars.

  • eljac913 (Ship 12 Div 053)

Happy Saturday everyone.  Hope you are all doing well and hearing from your Sailors.  I heard from mine briefly yesterday.  All seems to be well.

  • Dunesmom

Happy Saturday to you too!  So nice that you got to hear from your Sailor.  Sure brightens up the day:)  Navymom3, i sent the info on to Dune.  Still haven't heard from him.  I thank you so much for your kindness

  • Dunesmom

Well here i am again asking for help from those of you who live in the JAX area.  Tried to make lodging on the base and they are full up.  Darn kid waiting til the last minute to tell us if he was graduating or not.  any info for a nice, clean and safe place to stay that will not cost a fortune?  Your help is greatly appreciated:)

  • navymom3

Hey dunesmom. There is a best western on 17 just down from the base that looks ok. There is also a new hotel well refurbished hotel with a new name right there also it is called the Astoria. It just opened so it may have good rates and everything new. If you pull up a map look for the intersection of hwy 17(aka Park Ave.) and 295. There are several other hotels right in there. There are some nicer ones on wells rd just off hwy 17. Would maybe be only 1/2-1 mile further.

  • Dunesmom

Life saver navymom3, thank you so very much.  We are booked and ready to go!  What would i do without you?  Thanks bunches again ((hug))

  • gabbyhat

    Congrats Dunesmom....Dune is movin on!

Hi Tee-1...when in November? I will be there myself for my daughter's grad Nov 16 from flight engineer school...still waiting on orders to pop as to final PCS, but will be there a few days at least...would love to meet you and navymom3....

And the BIG news my dtr and her fiance are getting married while skydiving on Saturday...his leave got approved last minute so he's there with her now...wish I could b there with them, but this is just for the two of them...family ceremony later on, and frankly, I just can't see the sense in jumping out of a perfectly fine flying airplane....oh, to be young again...lol!
  • navymom3

Congrats Gabbyhat on the wedding. That will be a story to tell the grand kids later.

I would love to meet up with you ladies when you come to town. We also have a guest room if anyone needs a place to stay. We are about 30 minutes from NAS JAX.

  • Tee-1sailor's mom

Yes, congrats gabbyhat!  I know her training was long & hard.  I'll be there Thanksgiving week.  I might be staying at the Navy Lodge, depends on my son's current living situration...it's in transition right now.

  • Dunesmom

Navymom3 i am so sorry that i did not get your post before we left.  Sure would have loved to meet up with you.  Your town is huge and beautifull.

Dune is off to his next base on the other side of the country.  Yep he said he wanted to see the world so he is getting it, well the USA to start with. He is very excited and mom, well i am but he sure keeps getting further andfurther away.

I want to thank you all for your support over the last year and wish you and your Sailors the best of life.  Maybe we will meet up again on another board.

Stay Safe Sailors/Aircrew and All Service members

  • Tee-1sailor's mom

All the BEST to Dune and your whole family.  I'm sure we'll see each other on another group too.

  • Tee-1sailor's mom

I'm out in California....are you all going to be OK and not slammed by Issac??

  • navymom3

Tee we are all good here in Jacksonville. We got a little wind yesterday and it is just sprinkling today so far. We might get more rain as it keeps moving. We will just be getting the outside bands.

  • Tee-1sailor's mom

Thanks for the update navymom3, my son doesn't tell me much these days and I always want to know the news from JAX.

  • ZZsMom

So here is the current "issue" if you call it that.  The Sailor girl got her renewal for her car tags in the mail today which really is not an issue because all of that can be done by mail.  The issue it does bring up is that Texas, where the car is titled, requires a state inspection. That inspection sticker is on the windshield with the tags and visibly shows the expiration date.  How does she go about getting a new inspection sticker without bringing the car home to Texas?  Or is it even required until/unless that car does come back to Texas?

  • navymom3

zzsmom the inspection sticker is not required in Florida. I would ask your dmv what she needs to do. When it was registered last I would have thought they would have noted the expiration date. There might be a form she can fill out and have a sheriff here sign to verify the date.

She also may just want to register it here or see about getting a temp while she is here in school. Has she gotten orders to where she might go after school here is done? If she does decide to register here make sure she takes a copy of her orders so they wave the $225 fee they charge here.

  • Becky

Thinking of spending Thanksgiving in JAX with son. Does anyone know of good restaurant in Jacksonville for TG dinner? Does the base pretty much close for Thanksgiving? Thanks for any information.

  • Tee-1sailor's mom

I'll be there for that reason too Becky, maybe we can meet? I'm staying for a week. I don't know what we're doing for Thanksgiving day yet, my son's housing is in transition right now.  I think he said that they can't give everyone more than 3 days off at a time so some still have to be on duty.

zzsmom I would definitely check with your state's DMV.  My son had his license in Calif. and he renewed it but it never came.  Even thought it says it's expired he can drive in Florida because it's registered in Calif.  When he comes back to Calif he can still drive with the expired license unless he's here for more than 30 days.  Of course he's had to prove this a few times, espcially when buying alcohol, which is silly because just because the license is expired it doesn't change his birthday!    Anyway, my long-winded point is that I think all the states have different rules on licenses and registrations.

  • KIM756

Hi everyone, I'm new to this site. My son got to JAX at the end of September. He is a Corpsman. Looking forward to getting to know other Moms.
  • navymom3

Welcome Kim. I have a son at NAS JAX also but he is an ATI. We also live in the Jax area. Your son will love it here as we have great weather.

  • eljac913 (Ship 12 Div 053)

Hi everyone, I have a son in JAX also.  Lucky for me, I live outside of Tampa so he has been able to come home every so often.  Currently he is in Norfolk.  He told me he has duty on Thanksgiving day but can come home the following day.  Nice to meet other moms.

  • KIM756

Lucky you guys are so close. I'm in Washington State.
Eljac913 I think our boys PIR'd together. :) My son was Ship 7 Div 59. How's he liking it so far?
  • KIM756

Eljac913, yep they did. I thought your name was familiar, I just looked at my friend list and there you are! Yay :)
  • eljac913 (Ship 12 Div 053)

I remember you Kim756.  Nick is doing well and liking it.  How about your son?  Does he like what he is doing?  Nick loves being underway the best of all.

  • KIM756

I have 2 Cody's :) Mine is doing great and loving what he's doing. He says the Docs are pretty cool. Other Cody is good too, he is deployed on the USS Eisenhouer. I miss them both like crazy but I am so thankful I can talk to mine anytime and get to email all the time the other one and sometimes get to talk to him. What ship is Nick on?
  • eljac913 (Ship 12 Div 053)

Nick is on the USS Theodore Roosevelt DDG 98. I love him having him close.  When he is out to sea, I can email him so that is good.  I am still trying to learn everything.  I feel like i need an interpreter sometimes.  :)

  • KIM756

Haha I know exactly what you mean. Sounds like Nick has been on short times at sea. Do you know when he goes out for a long time? I'm having a hard time figuring out what to send in care pkgs since they don't have a lot of room to put stuff.
  • eljac913 (Ship 12 Div 053)

He was scheduled for July next year but they will be ready sooner.  Probably after the holidays.  He tells me he doesn't need anything right now so I have not sent anything.  But he has not been on a long trip yet so this may change.  I am thankful he got out of Virginia before the storm hit.

  • omama

Son heading to Jacksonville soon..AWO. Is this the right group to join?
  • navymom3

Welcome Omama yes it is the right page. He will love it here. My oldest sailor is here also. This is his 2nd duty station. He is ATI.

  • omama

navymom3.... thanks!  so happy to here that others love it there!

  • ZZsMom

Hi omama. My daughter is at VP30 and has been at JAX for 11 months. The base is great but very little off base is conveniently located. Jacksonville is very big and spred out. If you check out the discussion board Kalynn posted an awesome list of restaurants and things to do locally. It really helped my daughter finding her way around and finding herself a few favorite restaurants!
  • omama

ZZsMom, thank you i will do that! I guess he will be greatful he has a car:)

  • ZZsMom

The car was the first thing she wanted! lol
