Someone warned him that he would want to buy one before he hit Jacksonville..so he did! :)

  • Maria ( 9/132 - HM- 04-2011)

Zzsmom. Mine too. He has been in JAX since mid May
  • navymom3

I live here and it is really spread out. Without a car most stay on base or find friends that have a car.

  • Tee-1sailor's mom

Hi Omama.  Mine has been at Jax for going on 2 years.  I've been there a few times to visit and am going back in a few weeks to spend Thandsgiving with him.

  • eljac913 (Ship 12 Div 053)

My son also bought a car.  Very helpful in Jacksonville.

  • omama

I am excited for him to get to Jax he is headed to Sere the end of the month and reports to Jax 2nd week of December, he is going AWO Acustic. I sure hope that they will let him come home for Christmas. I miss him! He has been gone a yr! Tee-1saliors mom, enjoy thanksgiving with your son!!!

  • Becky

Does anyone know how BAS is suppossed to work at JAX? My AWV is telling me that his has stopped showing up in his pay? Does that ever happen and how does he get it re-instated and paid for back BAS?

  • Kalynn

He needs to look at his LES very closely!  If it's not showing up under his allowences at all then he needs to go to the PSD building on the corner of Childs Street and Birmingham Avenue.  However what I imagine is happening...If he is still living in that baracks, since there is a galley available to him then he'll be getting the BAS allowence but it will also be showing up as an allotment that they're taking back, but you get 3 meals a day!

  • Maria ( 9/132 - HM- 04-2011)

Becky, my son stopped Receiving his meal allowance when he arrived in JAX. He was not happy as the food is not very good.
  • Becky

Thank you both for the information. I know I can always depend on this group.

  • ZZsMom

Who gets to spend Thanksgiving with their Sailor's?  I'm not.  We did have plans to go but her Christmas leave was approved so I can't see driving 1000 miles one way to have her then fly home 3 week later. On one hand I'm bummed and on the other I can't wait for her to sleep in her bed on Christmas Eve.  I can't wait to sneek into her room and watch her.  Silly the things a mother misses.

  • gabbyhat

Aww...lucky you ZZ's mom....just know you will enjoy our time with her...my dtr grads her C school week from Friday, Luckily, I head out a week from tomorrow to watch her graduate and bring her brother to visit as well. She will be spending Thanksgiving with her husband in San Diego, and Xmas wirh his family in Indiana....will really miss her, but I know they need to be with each other.:) enjoy your time!
  • gabbyhat

I'm sorry, enjoy your time with her at Xmas...sorry Thanksgiving didnt work out...
  • ZZsMom

Thanks gabbyhat and enjoy your trip!  I don't think I am ready yet to share my sailor with a significant other so I hope she stays single for a while. I know that selfish but I just can't help it.

  • Tee-1sailor's mom

Gee, I hate giving bad news, but here's the scoop on BAS.  If your sailor is Aircrew and lives in the barricks they are often working during the hours the galley is open, so they decided not to pay for it.  This means they have to figure out how to afford to eat when they can't cook in their rooms.  My son had a horrible time trying to eat healthy with such a limited space and only a mini-frige, which they share, and a microwave.  He ended up eating out until he couldn't afford that anymore.  I spent a lot of titme trying to help him think of theings to eat he could keep in his room.

  • Becky

I thought they gave everyone BAS regardless. My son is Aircrew. When did they stop giving it? Im like you trying to come up with healthy options. How can they give some ranks BAS and others not?

  • Kalynn

They should all be receiving it but if they are living in the barracks it gets taken out as an allotment as well!  This is different base to base, because NAS JAX has 2 galley's available they deduct BAS from any sailors living in the barracks, however the base I'm currently living on (NAS PAX in Maryland) doesn't have a galley so our guys in the barracks are receiving their BAS.  So if your son is new to Jax this is probably why they are feeling that financial burden!  It does stink for many on aircrew, or mids shift because the eating times are not available to them, but they will learn real quick not everything is fair and they will adapt!  Once they reach E4 or add a dependent they can live on their own and receive BAS and BAH...which alot of sailors do, but they also realize additional dependents (either spouses or children) don't come cheap!

  • Tee-1sailor's mom

I only know about he food allowiance when I was speaking of the galley thing.  They don't get anything for free...if they eat in the galley, it's taken out of their check, if not, then it isn't.

  • Tee-1sailor's mom

Just before returning from deployment mine was told that a single E-4 would no longer be able to live off base.  He was VERY upset about it until he got E-5.  I guess having them live in the barracks saves the gov't $$.

  • Tee-1sailor's mom

Hi everyone, just thought I'd say "HI," not much activity here lately.  I'm very excited to be spending Thanksgiving with my sailor.  Not a fan of flying, but it'll be worth it.

  • ZZsMom

Jealous! We cancelled our trip to JAX since the sailor gets to come home for Christmas! Enjoy your trip!
  • gabbyhat

Aww, how exciting for you Tee! How many days in JAX? Got here Thurs night...Her graduation was yesterday....we just wiped out St. John's Town Center...great place...lots of nice shops and restaurants...Tuesday will come too soon :(

My son is a HN living in Jacksonville, FL.   This will be the second Thanksgiving that he has not been home for Thanksgiving.   It makes me sad, but we live in Northern California, so it is too far away for us to go to JAX.   He told me that there are some families that will take him in and feed him.  Blessings to those families who take care of our sailors during Thanksgiving when our sailors are far away from home.   Thank you!

    Mary

  • Maria ( 9/132 - HM- 04-2011)

Mary this is our first thanksgiving without or son. I am really bummed. I was worried that he was going to spend it alone too but he is going to his friends house . Glad your son won't be alone.
  • velvetlace

    windhaven and Jim-

I remember when my Dad was in the Navy and had his own ship.   We would not see him for many months on end.   I can't believe I am going through this again with my only child/son.  He won't be home for Christmas either.   I have only seen him a couple of times in the past two years.   Sorry, but this is the part of the military that I hate.....the separation.   I have been sick with the flu almost a month now, and I just wish my corpsman son could be home one of these Thanksgivings or Christmases.   Sorry for  the rant.....Confession is good for the soul!

    Mary

  • Maria ( 9/132 - HM- 04-2011)

Hi Mary so sorry you are not feeling well. Hope you get better soon. At least we will get to see him for Christmas. We were so lucky because for the 1st year he was in San Antonio . So he would drive home every long weekend. Jim, that sounds so cool. Happy thanksgiving to everyone!
  • velvetlace

WindHaven-    I am feeling better today.  I just feel sorry for our sons and daughters who cannot get home for Thanksgiving.  I gues it is part of growing up.   I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving and an even better Christmas~

  • gabbyhat

Happy Thanksgiving ladies!! Thoroughly enjoyed our visit in Jacksonville the last 6 days...Navy Lodge was great!!! All staff very personable and helpful....the kitchenette was perfect for cooking....made spaghetti dinner for my dtr and son of her friends....was nice to cook them a home cooked meal as they only have microwaves and small frigs in their barracks rooms....back in TX yesterday after dropping her off at airport. She will be spending some well deserved leave with her husband in San Diego. She leaves JAX 12/8 for Whidbey and subsequent deployment....so I will say thank you ladies for all your support and advice and good luck to all your sailors!
  • Tee-1sailor's mom

Happy Thanksgiving all!!  I'm happy to hear it went great for your visit gabbyhat.  I've also stayed in the Navy Lodge here it's very nice.

I'm staying for a week....figured if I'm going this far I may as well stay for a bit!

Sorry to hear you've been ill Velvetlace.  Jim, that sounds awesome, I'd love to hear all about it!!

    Blessings to all of you.

  • ZZsMom

My Sailor is about to advance so I want to order a coin but can only fond AM3 with the red stripe in it? She has always had green stripes do the switch to red with Petty Officer Third class it am I just not looking at the right vendor?
  • Kalynn

Congrats Lindsey!!! Yes, once you reach Petty Officer you lose your
green stripes and gain the crow - a perched eagle with spread wings, then a rating mark (AM - hubby say AM should have something like 2 hammers), then 1 red Chevron for 3rd class, 2 red chevrons for 2nd class, 3 red chevrons for 1st class! So for the next to rank up she'll get, she'll receive another chevron. Congrats again!! :)
  • ZZsMom

Thanks Kalynn you arr always a doll! I will send Lindsey your congratulations. Hope you are doing well up north. Happy holidays!
  • Donna
