Hello my daughter just got her orders for AO Squadro in Jacksonville Florida.Does any one have some info they could share with me Thank You :)

  • navymom3

Welcome Theresasmom. My oldest sailor is stationed her at NAS JAX until March. We also live here. What information are you looking for? The weather is usually wonderful here. Right now it is a bit chilly. The base is very large. So if she has a car it would be great if she had it. There are ton's of things to do and places to see. There is stuff and outings for the single sailors all the time. They just need to check in with the ITT office.

    hought I'd share:

militaryfares.com my son got a real good deal to home home for Christmas.

  • eljac913 (Ship 12 Div 053)

Happy for all of you whose sailors are coming home for Christmas.  Mine is not this year.  He will be home for New Year's.  He is stationed in Jacksonville also.

  • velvetlace

Unfortunately, this will be the second Christmas that my son will be working at the Jacksonville Naval Hospital and not be home for Christmas.  I remember when my Dad was in the Navy that he was not always home at the holidays, so it is the Navy way.   But, I hate it!   Oh, well!   He might be home in the spring.

Merry Christmas to you too Jim & thanks for the nice picture!

My son has been at JAX for....well it seems like forever....he could get cell service if he held the phone right next to the window..sometimes.  It'll always be better outside.  He went w/o a care for quite a while and finally got sick of asking for rides, there is no good public transporation there.  He bought a vehicle but really comments on the way the roads are laid out in Jacksonville.  He currently lives in Orange Park, has lived in other places too but it's 10 minutes to work so the pros outweight the cons for now.

Theresa's Mom, tell her to be careful when exploring in town, go with those who know the areas.  There are many really nice places in Jacksonville but also some places you don't want to be....just like any city I guess.

On the up side, when I was there in November the weather was beautiful...guess it does get cold in winter though.

    car, not care.

I hope everyone is enjoying their Holidays! I am nearing the end of leave with my son, and having a hard time wanting to let him leave, I know it will be a year at least before I see him again. I am so proud of him and the man he has become, and I look forward to hearing about his new adventures. But I will miss him terribly:)

  • eljac913 (Ship 12 Div 053)

My son got home today and we just had Christmas.  Grateful that he got to come home at all.

  • Tee-1sailor's mom

How many days until Christmas?  LOL

  • flgirltwo

@minecovote - what's the Navy Blue Jacket of the Year?  What's it for?  Congratulations to your sailor!

  • Tee-1sailor's mom

I spoke with my son yesterday.  He was at the BEACH.  JAX is having beautiful weather!  It's in the 20's in Cali.

  • flgirltwo

Does anyone know how long it takes to be assigned to a squadron?  Son just got his name in on his last duty weekend.  Would he know by his next duty weekend in February?

  • eljac913 (Ship 12 Div 053)

Hi minecoyote...my son recently told me he is the Navy Blue Jacket of the quarter.  I don't know what that is?  Can you explain?  Thank you.

  • omama

My son is really enjoying his schooling in Jax!! and likes flying but said it kind of makes him get airsick when he flys with a pilot in training:)

  • Tee-1sailor's mom

Anticipating graduation from C School in a few months. Do any of you Moms have any first hand knowledge? How much advance warning do they give you and I am assuming that it is held on base? Any input will be greatfully appreciated.

  • Tee-1sailor's mom

    HI JIM!

Becky, me and  few other family flew across the country to attened, think we knew over a month ahead, but just like the Navy, it wasn't absolutely for sure until, like Jim said, about 2 weeks ahead.  Good thing I flew SW because I had booked the flights a week behind  the date!  I was able to change it thank goodness, wouldn't have wanted to miss it!

  • Becky

Thank you all so much. I had a feeling it would probably be sort of last minute. Oh, well, it will be great just to see him graduate.

  • tmonroe

Hi, It has been taking up to 3 weeks for my son to get mail that should only take 3 days to get there. Folks sent packages to him on December 10th and he didn't get them until January 18th. Does anyone know if there is a better way to send them other than the post office box he gave me at division 600?
  • ZZsMom

tmonroe - If he doesn't want to get mail at his squadron he has to get a box off base because the post office on JAX doesnt have boxes for rent.  There is a UPS store just up from the base that rents boxes but I am not sure how much they are. The closest Post Office is quite a distance from base and the box runs $76 a year.

  • ReneeBC

    In regard to faster shipping...

I sent a large box via UPS.  I had to modify the address so it was "doable" for their system.  I had to change Patrol Squadron 30 to Bldg 30 and drop the P.O., just putting Box #__.  It arrived "ground" in 3 days from IN to FL.

  • TamiNavyMom

Hello. My son just arrived for C School.
  • ReneeBC

    Tami,

Welcome.  I'm new to JAX as well.  My son has been there for 3 1/2 weeks and began class this week.

  • TamiNavyMom

Hi ReneeBC...we are both in the Aircrew group...my sailor is AWO...yours?
  • ReneeBC

    TamiNM,

My son is an AWV.  He likes JAX being more of a college town than a base town.  Now that he's started class I doubt he has much time to continue his exploration of the area.

  • Tee-1sailor's mom

Welcome Renee and Tami, I've seen you in the Aircrew group as well.  Mine is AWO and has been at JAX for about 2 years.  He discourages me from sending mail because he says it's such a pain.  I sent him a box while on deployment and he received that in about a week, I was impressed!  If I want to send him a gift I usually put money directly into his checking account....not very personal but I know he receives it.

  • Tee-1sailor's mom

He likes being there in general, but HAD to have a vehicle.  He hadn't had one since joining the Navy.  He says driving in Jacksonville is an adventure!!  He's currently living off base in Orange Park.

  • ZZsMom

Hi everyone. My husband and I decided Friday to head to JAX for a visit so here we are! Very rainy today and looks like the same for tomorrow but it's OK because we are with our Sailor girl ;)
  • ReneeBC

ZZsMom-  Woohoo!  Enjoy your visit.  Do you find yourself just staring at your kid?  :)))

Tee-1Sailor's mom-  Thanks for the warm welcome.  I will be a frequent-flyer to JAX N4M group until the end of Oct., at the very least.  Glad to have familiar moms (Aircrew) to share the journey.

  • Tee-1sailor's mom

    Wonderful ZZ'sMom, enjoy your girl.

    :) Renee

  • ZZsMom

Leaving JAX today :/ Always hard walking away from my girl but I have no doubt she knows she is loved to the moon and back.
  • omama

Jim G. so sorry that is happening to your sailor, I hope they get things figured out soon and that he will be ok.

  • TamiNavyMom

Jim G....I second omama's comment! I hope your sailor is ok!
  • ReneeBC

Good news, Jim.  Thanks for keeping us up to speed.  I hope the news just keeps getting better!

  • Tee-1sailor's mom

Oh Jim, I'm so sorry to hear about your son's trouble.  Praying that he keeps getting better and makes a full recovery!!

  • Tee-1sailor's mom

The fun just never stops does it?
