Merry Christmas, Jim, and to your boy.  :)

My son has moved on to Whidbey, but I wanted to remain as useful as possible to those arriving at JAX.  I hope everyone has a plan for contact during the holidays whether it be in person, by phone, skpe, etc.  Enjoy your sailors/airmen anyway you can!

  • ibmom

Hi Renee which squadron did your son get?

  • ReneeBC

ibmom,  He's in the 1st "Screaming Eagles" squadron. :)  It was his second choice, but he seems to be hitting it off with the others in the squadron.  He's living off base and REALLY likes that.  He likes compartmentalizing his life; PO3 on base vs D. off base.

What is new in I`s world?  Will you be together for the holiday?

  • Tee-1sailor's mom

Happy Christmas everyone.  I hope you have a wonderful day and that your sailor is safe and secure.

  • spomss

    Merry Christmas and safe holidays!

  • ibmom

Hi Renee, "I" is in VP40 and really likes it.  He is home but just for a few days.  Glad to hear D is getting to live off base.  "I" hopes to move off base when he returns from deployment.

    Merry Christmas!

Is there a forum for the spartans?

  • rosie

    Hi ladies
My son is on light duty and is scheduled for surgery next month.
He was with the USS Halliburton.
Love meeting navy moms and or wife's.

    Hello All,

My grandson just arrived about a week ago from A school in Pensacola. Says he's with VP30 squadron?  But also said he isn't scheduled for classes till June. So far, likes JAX. Says it bigger than P'cola. His car died in P'cola and is 'itching for wheels'. Says room is bigger and only one room mate. And ' they're treated like adults'  can have food in room and has hours like a 'real job'. Can go off base every night and weekends.. He just turned 21. Hope the discipline he's received since BC last March keeps him doing the right thing. He lived with me from 11 to 19. Plan on visiting in Feb. JAX is only about 5 hours from me. P'cola was 10 long hours.

  • Donna

Hi geema3. My son is there also. He is with the Red Lancers (VP10?). He loves JAX but misses home and friends too. He just went back after his couple weeks of leave. We are in TX so even the 10 hours away would have been closer. I hope your grandson is settled and making friends.
  • geema3

    Thnx, Donna.

Folks from Houston were visiting their sailor in P'cola and had less of a drive time, than I did from Fort Myers. But TX is HUGE! ;-)) I moved to FL from NJ about 2 years ago and he stayed there for school, but then enlisted. So he just went to NJ for leave over holidays to visit friends that he may not see for a year.

  • geema3

If they're working / training on the electronic components of the plane, do they get any 'flying time'. I thought as an AE, he'd be on the ground?
  • Donna

Prayers for the VP 10 squad and the family of this young sailor that passed away in the car wreck last night. Horrible loss.
  • nannette6209

Ran up there for a quick overnighter for some last minute hugs.  Going to miss my boy big time.  Always will miss that boy but the person I left was a grown man.

Continued thoughts and prayers for the Uebel family

  • ZZsMom

Well my Navy Girl is off to a new duty station.  I wish you all well and bid you a farewell.

  • maika

Hi I just joined the group and have a question and hope someone can assist me. My son just got to JAX and states he cannot get mail unless he pays for a PO Box. Is that correct?
  • spomss

    welcome to JAX...

could be true-the only address I got was to the squadron...I send packages with that address and mine gets them...

  • Tee-1sailor's mom

Hi there JAX folks!  It's been while since I checked in here.  Good to see there is some activity here.  My son just returned to JAX from his second deployment.  Evidently it was pretty awful though he's doing well in his career.  He had only been married 5 months b/f leaving and was gone for 7.  From what I hear he'll be going to instructor school in the very near future.  He's an AWO.  I'm planning a trip to see them in the next month or so and I'm retiring this month!  SOOO, expect to see more of Tee.

  • Tee-1sailor's mom

As I remember it, getting mail in the barracks is OK.  Mine always got his mail but the timing was poor, like he was working when the Post Office was open.  I think they have to physically go and pick it up from there.  I could be remembering wrong though, it's been a while.

  • Tee-1sailor's mom

BTW, HI Jim, good to see you, how's your son doing??

Fair Winds and Following Seas ZZ !! All the best to your Navy girl !!!

  • Tee-1sailor's mom

LOL I was checking back to see what's going on and my post was the last so I'll just say "HI."

  • spomss

    funny Tee....

glad that things are going well with your Sailor...and congrats on retirement!!

  • ReneeBC

Great news, Jim. I'm so happy your young man can move on, making his way to an awesome future. Be sure to keep us informed of his new path!

  • spomss

congrats Jim and hope he enjoys his next adventure...nice you will stick around and give input and info!!  plus you still get to visit Jax...had fun on my 2 trips there....

  • Navymom14

My AWO sailor arrived in JAX a couple of weeks ago. He is excited for this next part of his journey. He is on hold for a couple of months and goes to SERE in January. I'm so thankful for Navy For Moms!
  • DebinAlabama

Hi everyone. My Sailor graduated A school from Pensacola on 11/4. He is attached to a squadron in Jacksonville. He is currently on his way overseas to meet up with his squadron which is already deployed.
  • Tee-1sailor's mom

Hi JAX moms, dads & other family.  HAPPY THANKSGIVING!  A while ago Jim G made me a co-administrator and I've been MIA for a while on here.  Now that I'm retired I'm hoping to keep up with the group more often.  My son is Aircrew stationed at JAX.  He's been there for a few years now.  I've visited there 3 or 4 times (I live in California).

  • Tee-1sailor's mom

Welcome to all the new members!

  • Tee-1sailor's mom

Noel, I wasn't able to attend my son's winging ceremony.  What is NOF?

  • Tee-1sailor's mom

    Oops, I mean NFO

  • DebbieS

Hello everyone. I was hoping someone knows about mail delivery at JAX
My daughter got to base on Saturday. She told me yesterday that she just found out that when mail arrives on base they still don't receive it for 3-4 weeks. Does that sound correct? She was previously at pensacola and woul receive the packages within 4-5 days
  • ReneeBC

    Debbie,

My son received regular mail within a week.  UPS delivered at the usual pace.  I don't know of an instance when mail took longer to get there.

Perhaps someone else had a different experience.  Anyone?

  • Navymom14

I have sent a couple of packages to JAX and he got them in a timely manner. Once his package arrived on base it took an extra day or two to get to the area where he picks up his mail.
  • Tee-1sailor's mom

I believe the problem can be that the post office, where they pick up their mail, is only open certain hours and they are at work at that time.  Mine had some issues with lost items, but it's been a while since he lived on base. Also, I lose track of which housing had which issues! LOL

  • Tee-1sailor's mom

Navymom14, have you joined the Aircrew group?  They are a great bunch and are very informative.  (Mine is also AWO)

  • Tee-1sailor's mom

Hi Jim, and a late Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to you (and everyone!)

Awesome that you got to see your son for Christmas.

    A

  • Tee-1sailor's mom

I'm curious about who is following this group these days.  I try to check in every few days to see if anyone has posted.  Guess I missed it this time!

FYI to all here, my son is Aircrew (AWO) at JAX and is in his 5th year in the Navy.  I live in California.

  • Tee-1sailor's mom

How about a roll call?  Check in with a little info about you and your sailor.

  • ZZsMom

My Sailor is now in OKC-Tinker but her BF is still in JAX and its looking like come August my Sailor will be back to JAX.
  • navymom3

I am still here. My oldest sailor is now in Cali at Point Mugo but we still live here in Jax. And my middle sailor is in San Diego now after being in Japan for 3 years.

  • cc2014

My daughter finished boot camp in Nov. And has been at Pensacola for A-Pact Training. She finishes on Friday and will then head to JAX where she is to be assigned to a helicopter squadron. I am new to Navy and still learning as I go:)
  • 20100510navymom

I'm here too............my sailor is in JAX almost 5 years now.

  • ReneeBC

Glad you saw you sailor for Christmas, Jim.

I'm just slogging through winter.  I'm more active and social when I can feel my feet.  LOL.  My son (AWV) is approaching 3yrs and is in the 1st squadron out of Whidbey Island.

Welcome aboard new navy moms (families)!  Bravo Zulu to NACCS, A-school, and C-school grads.

    R.

  • DebbieS

My daughter is currently at JAX and will complete C-school in March. ATI Heading up to Whidbey after that. Renee, how does your son like it up there?
  • ReneeBC

    Debbie,

    Welcome!

My son really likes the Island, and, of course, Seattle is close enough to hit cool stuff on the weekends. (The island is the largest island of the lower 48 states.)  If you are from a cold-winter state, the coastal Washington winters are wonderful.  45 degrees on average.  If it snows, it's gone by the time the sun comes out.   Public transportation is free on the island, which we found amazing.  My son has his car, but my daughter flew out to see the baby brother this summer and she used the shuttle to go all over the island to sightsee while he was working.

The only thing I dislike is that he's a three-day drive or a pricey airline ticket away.  JAX and P'Cola were a one-day drive, which we drove A LOT.  ;)

    There isn't a Whidbey-Mom/parent group.  Perhaps I should start one. :)

  • DebbieS

    Thanks for the info.
We live about 20 miles east of Cleveland, OH in the snowbelt so used to digging out of lake effect snow! My daughter will be excited about the weather up there.
She will be making the cross country drive so that she can have her car up there. I'm a little nervous about that but she's insistent
I know another navy mom who's son is up there too. Her son was at boot camp and A school with my daughter at NAS Pensacola Then he went straight up to Whidbey She will finish up in JAX the first week in March.
  • ReneeBC

    Debbie,

Glad to help.  March will be a better time to travel across country than when my son made the trip, which was during a December Montana blizzard.  I imagine she will encounter snow, but not blizzard conditions.  I'd suggest adding a couple of extra days to the travel time, just in case she needs it.  And save money for the ferry to Whidbey Island.  :)

It's good that she'll have friends there.  It's a pretty tight-knit community there.  Fair winds and following seas to your girl!

  • Tee-1sailor's mom

Great info about Whidbey...my son requested it but got JAX instead.  I know so many mom's whose kids get stationed on the opposite coast from their family.

    Thanks for checking in everyone!

  • Pam

HI all.  Can anyone tell me if this group is active?  My son will be heading to JAX to work in the hospital there next year.  He's a Corpsman and has been in for over 5 years.
