    Hi, Pam.

It is active, but it has periods that are more active than others.  Some of us had kids at C school there and a few have kids assigned there as their duty station.  We like to keep in touch with one another.  Welcome to JAX.

  • Pam

Thanks ReneeBC!  We are looking forward to having our son in the same time zone for the first time in nearly 6 years by the time he makes his way to JAX. We live in Atlanta, so not too far. His first two 1/2 years were spent in Italy and then 3 years in Hawaii. Coming stateside will be sooo nice!

  • ReneeBC

    Pam,

Great!  JAX is in your back yard.  We're in Indiana, but we made marathon-drives to both P'cola and JAX.  Now our son is stationed at NASWI, though deployed, and that requires much planning and an airline.  I'm excited for you! Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy!

  • Pam

We are absolutely thrilled with JAX.  And how funny, but we are originally from Indiana.  NW corner up by Chicago.  But we've been outside of Atlanta for 15 years now and do not miss the winters up there!  What rate is your son?  Our son is a corpsman.

  • spomss

hi Pam-mine was here for C school and is on to Hawaii-but I did get to visit a few times-nice you can get there quick to visit

  • Pam

Your sailor will love Hawaii!  It truly is a paradise.  Although after being there for two and half years, mine is ready to be closer to family.

  • Tee-1sailor's mom

Hi everyone, and welcome Pam!  My son & his wife were just here (in Calif) for a visit.  It was so good to see them!  It'd been a year.  Now back to JAX and then he's off on deployment (again).  Mine will most likely be at JAX for a long time.  He & his wife like to vacation in Atlanta.  He's Aircrew btw.  They like FL.  There's talk of buying a house after the upcoming deployment.  One good thing for family, it's a great place to visit!!

  • Tee-1sailor's mom

Wow, that was a choppy post!  LOL

  • ReneeBC

    Pam,

I'm sorry for the late reply. Our grandchildren arrived, ages 4 and 6, and were here for a three week visit to Indiana. This grandma was busy, busy, exhausted, busy!  lol                 Our son is AWV aboard a P-3.

My husband would love to move south, especially the Atlanta area.  His sister lives in Jonesboro.  I want to keep home where it is until our son is out of the Navy though that may change if he goes career.

Tee-1,  I'm glad you had a wonderful visit with your son and daughter-in-law.  Have you already started planning your next trip to Florida?

    R.

  • Pam

    Thanks for the welcome Tee-1.

ReneeBC - totally understandable!  You had your hands full!

We are T-5 months until the end of Hawaii and on to JAX.  Cannot wait!  And, for the record, I have lived 30 miles outside of Atlanta for 15 years now and can't wait to get away from the area and the traffic.  I work in Atlanta and my commute is usually hour and fifteen.  There is a bus and train system, but it does not service areas outside of the perimeter of Atlanta or have schedules that allow for family time.  I choose to make sure my 8 year old has a good, hot breakfast and drop her off at school.  By the time I am done with that the last bus has been long gone!  It's a great place to visit though.

  • maika

Hi my son comes back from deployment on 8/29. Does anyone know if he will be able to spend time with us immediately or do they have things to take care of first when they get back. He's not sure and I don't want to get there and not be able to see him. Thanks
  • latinnative

Maika normally they get to leave with unless they have duty.
  • maika

    Thank you latinnative!
  • Tee-1sailor's mom

I realized I hadn't checked in with this group in a while.  Thank you to those who do.  ReneeBC, yes I have already started planning to visit FL.  I can't go too long at a time w/o seeing my kid!!  When he gets back I'll be heading back there as soon as he's ready for a mom visit.

  • ReneeBC

    Tee-1,

It's easier when they're single to say, "Your mother needs a kid-fix, so I'm coming down (over, up, or out) next weekend."  It's a whole new ballgame with the addition of a daughter-in-law.  I hope your visit is sooner rather than later! :)

  • Pam

Has anyone ever stayed at the Navy Lodge at the JAX naval base?

  • Navymom14

Yes, I spent one night there. I liked it a lot, especially for the price. Keep in mind that if they don't have a room available, keep trying back. They often have cancellations and rooms open up. Hope you enjoy your stay!
  • Pam

Good to know - thank you!  We're heading down the first weekend in October and may end up staying there.  Is it near water?

  • Navymom14

We are also heading down the first weekend in October for our son's graduation! When our son was in Pensacola, it was very close to water, but it isn't in JAX. Maybe I will see you there!
  • Pam

Wonderful - thank you!  We're headed out on a cruise out of Jacksonville on Oct. 5.  I seen that Mayport was a little further out, closer to the ocean.

  • Pam

We visited Jacksonville last weekend before our cruise.  We stayed at the beach, which I absolutely loved.  The bike riders were so wonderful to see everywhere!  You try to do that here in Atlanta and you will be run over!  But we found Mayport and the Jacksonville Naval Air station.  I'm pretty sure my son is going to love it there.  Almost as much as I am going to love having him in the same time zone for the first time in nearly 6 years!  We picked up an apartment rental book for them.  Does anyone have any recommendations on where to live there?  He'll be at the hospital.

  • Tee-1sailor's mom

Happy Fall everyone (a little late) !  Good to see you check in Jim!  How's your son doing?

Great to hear you enjoyed your JAX visit Pam.  If I'd have been here sooner I could have reported staying at the Navy Gateway at JAX, it was very nice.  I live in California, so local info is through my daughter-in-law who is livng in the St. John area with her mom while my son is deployed.  I feel  bad for them, they've only been married 2 years and they'll miss all the holidays and both of their birthdays together this year and he was gone for Christmas last year too.  Such is the military life!  This is his 3rd deployment, and so far it's the hardest for me.  I do have some good news, my daughter is expecting her third child!  (my #3 grandbaby) next spring.  So may I know are having babies this year!

Oh & in December the sailor finds out what his new duty station will be.  Most likely he'll stay in JAX.  He's been on the P-8 as an AWO.

  • Tee-1sailor's mom

How was the graduation Navymom14?  October is great time to be in FL, it's starting to cool off.  What rate if your son?

  • Tee-1sailor's mom

ReneeBC, a daughter-in-law does drop the mom priority down a notch, but it also gives you someone new to love.  My DIL is the best!  She tells me what's really going on! LOL

  • Tee-1sailor's mom

I want to apologize for not welcoming new members consistently, I need a better system to check this group!  LOL

  • Tee-1sailor's mom

In that vein, WELCOME latinnative, Stacey, & KathynnJennifer (sorry if I got the spelling wrong).

  • ReneeBC

Tee,  So true.  The older my son gets the less talkative he is.  Thank goodness his girlfriend is super communicative!

Ditto, Jim, what's new with your son?  I`m glad your planning a trip to Jax...it does a parent good!

  • azmom

Hello everyone  I'm new to this group.  My daughter will be heading there soon from A School.  I was wondering what everyone thinks about this base and if anyone has any insight to being there for an Air Traffic Controller.

  • Pam

Welcome azmom!  I'm new to the group also.  My son is corpsman and is scheduled to report to the hospital next year.

Tee-1 - I am finding out about the whole "mom is not as important since I have a gf thing now!"  Well actually he has a fiancé but my calls, texts and emails are not nearly as frequent anymore lol.  But we love the girl and have spent the last four months or so wedding venue shopping for them.

  • Navymom14

Jim, sorry to hear your son is dealing with Crohns. I have been managing mine for almost 30 years. If you would like a couple of tips to share with your son, I would be glad to help. One is a supplement that has helped me immensely. Send me a message if you are interested :-)
  • azmom

If we were to ship/drive our daughters car to Jacksonville (we live in AZ) will she be able to keep her registration in AZ or will she have to get FL registration and plates?  She will be there for 3 years.

  • navymom3

AZmom yes she can keep her Arizona license and plates for he car. I am sure she would love he car. Jacksonville is very large.

  • azmom

What are the barracks like for single enlisted?  Is there a common area they share?  Is there a full kitchen? Do they have their own bedroom/bath?

  • geema3

AZ mom. My grandson is in JAX NAS. His 1st room shared with another guy was much like a college dorm. Two beds, 2 Desks, 2 dressers, 2 closets, storage space, small fridge, microwave, one bathroom. He's now in a room by himself since he became a PO3, I haven't seen that one. Just assume it's just one of everything like the first room. No kitchen' in room. I think there were some common areas for TV watching, gaming, etc.

  • Pam

My son will be stationed at JAX NAS very soon!  Super excited for him!

  • azmom

My daughter is an AC. Anyone out there with a son, daughter, wife, husband with an AC in NAS JAX?

  • azmom

    Pam, what's your son's rating?

  • Pam

He's a corpsman and will be working at the hospital!

  • azmom

Pam, my daughter works in the control tower. She has only been there a week but is getting settled in and likes it there.  She loves being in the tower.

  • Pam

Oh good for her!  We live in Atlanta so have gone down to the Gulf Coast numerous times and have always loved the beach.  We spent a couple day sin Jacksonville and loved the beach there.  Looking forward to the next three years.

  • azmom

Pam, did your son get to Jacksonville yet?  Will he have any friends from A School going there as well?  My daughter just got her leave approved so she will be home for Christmas.  I'm the only one who knows that she is coming.  She wants to surprise her Dad, sister and Grandmother.  So excited!

  • Pam

azmom - that is going to be the best surprise!  He is not scheduled to arrive in JAX until early next year.  He's stationed in Hawaii right now and will be home for the holidays!  He has been in the Navy for over 5 years but actually does know a couple people already stationed in Jacksonville.  They have been very helpful so far.

  • 1after909

    Hello,

My son has been in Jacksonville since last Aug.  He lives off base.  His PIR was Oct. '14 in RI.

We live up in freezing IL, and are glad he doesn't have to endure this snow!

  • Pam

My son has finally arrived in JAX.  Moving can be pretty hectic but they are settling in rather nicely.  Hopefully it's a little warmer there than here in Atlanta..

  • ReneeBC

Woohoo, Pam! He's a short drive away. I'm happy you will have weekend visits in your future.

1after909, We were the crazy parents that left Indiana after work on Friday, driving straight through and trading the driver's seat as needed. We'd get our kid-fix all day Saturday, breakfast Sunday morning, and that marathon drive back to Indiana.  We may or may not have missed him more in the winter.  ;)

    Renee

  • 1after909

    ReneeBC
It been a long time since I've made such a trip by car!
  • Pam

I'm hoping you at least lived in Southern Indiana!  We are originally from NW IN, up by Chicago and could not imagine doing a drive like that, butttt that's not to say we wouldn't have done it!  Haha, mom's can be pretty persuasive when they want to see their children!  Already planning a long weekend in February!  This is soooo nice considering his first two duty stations!

  • ReneeBC

Pam, We're halfway between Indianapolis and Bloomington. You're right about determined parents!  My son is at *NASWI, now, which makes the weekend marathon-drives impossible.  We have flown out and back over a weekend, which is just as crazy, though.  LOL

*I stay on the JAX page because my son went to C-school there and he has buddies who are stationed there.  My mom went to school at JAX, too, in 1958.   It's fun to see photos of the base before and after fifty years.

  • ReneeBC

    Pam,

I forgot to mention your February trip down!  Have a wonderful time!!!!

  • Pam

Thanks so much ReneeBC!  He's already been home once since heading down there.  It didn't help his car was shipped here!
