I think you are right RoTcMoM if I get any info I will share it - can you do the same?

  • Strider223

My son called 3 times during the 4 weeks. They do have free time, and he got the impression prior to going that you spent a lot of time in your room and he was going to take an on line course, but he said his group was unusually social and they went to beaches, a baseball game, other midshipmen's home's nearby and Seaworld! During calls he told me some stuff, but I heard more details when he came home. What an experience!
  • Strider223

My son said the same as ViperGirl, there was a lot of waiting for things. He said Marine week was the most exciting for sure! He came out of CORTRAMID thinking he wants to do sub. Bottom line is that the mids get a view of each community so they can see which area they would like to try for (knowing in the end, though, it is the Navy's decision!)
  • gmwrdh

Thanks everyone for the quick response just because I said we probably would not hear from him he called last night- so excited he is staying in a hotel right now and has Marine Week first -which he wanted said he wanted to get the hard part over first!  He said he will call when he can but not to worry if we don't hear from him because he won't be able to call during Marine or Sub week. Sounds like a fun and exciting time for our Midshipman.

RoTcMoM I  cant figure out how to accept your friend request.  Please let me know how.

  • suvwi

Lukes mama -I think there are study guides for the aviation tests. Some kids work on them for months/years. I cant remember the test name however there is a lot of info online. If he's considering it have him look into the books and sites. Of course there is a Navy 4Moms aviation group.

I'm ancient, remember when Lemoore was new. So glad he was able to actually fly.
  • gmwrdh

heard from my Mid yesterday  text  message was I'm alive and I had a great week!  so he made it through Marine Week!

  • gmwrdh

RoTcMoM  glad you heard from her  We heard from our mid again yesterday he was on surface week- he goes to subs next week.

  • gmwrdh

Cortramid is also over for us. My Mid is at the beach right now - friends picked him up from the airport- these were the only dates that they could get together before everyone goes back to school Can't wait til tomorrow to hear all about it when he gets home
  • Michaels Mom

Hi, I am new to all this my son has just begun his journey in the NROTC.I would welcome anything you all have to say! Thanks! :-)
  • Fran

Welcome, Michaels Mom!  Where does your son attend school?  How is he enjoying his experience so far?

  • Michaels Mom

ViperGirl, congratulations, May will be here before you know it!! Thanks too for the Welcome! :-)
  • Michaels Mom

Fran, thanks for the welcome. He is in the NROTC at the University of New Mexico. He is doing well so far, at least that is what he is telling me! :-)
  • Fran

    How wonderful!:)

  • helenp

My son was informed that Navy service assignments will be delayed at least a month. They usually are made in October, and now they're saying by Thanksgiving. The board that meets sometime in late September is now meeting after the budget stuff is more clear.

  • J/J Mom

Thanks helenp, that's good to know.  My son may know that, but if he does, he hasn't told us!!  lol

  • J/J Mom

Lukes mama ... congrats for your son!  Praying the interview goes well for him.  Thus begins another journey  :]

  • helenp

My son's Unit just got their service assignments. He got PILOT! He's so excited. I'm so proud of him, but all I can think is, "He's going to have to land on an aircraftcarrier at night!" LOL

  • helenp

Congratulations to all the sons and daughter as they get their service assignments. Four years of hard work and soon they will be Jr officers. On to Pensacola......

  • J/J Mom

Congrats to all!  As far as i know our son's unit hasn't heard anything -- or they're putting off telling them cuz the Navy Ball was last night.  Hmmmm

  • NavyMarineMum

Hi everyone, I don't mean to interrupt, but I just want to make sure I'm in the right place. My Son is a Senior in College at Norwich University studying International Studies with a Minor in Chinese. He has an NROTC Scholarship there. Am I in the right place? Thank you, Stacy-

  • helenp

Yes, welcome StacyM. No such thing as interrupting. My son is a senir at the University of Rochester studying Chemistry. Will your son be commissioning in May? My brother was in the Army and he taught at Norwich--a long time ago.

  • helenp

ViperGirl your son is Marine Option, correct? i believe the marine pilots have to go to TBS before flight school and that is what is backed up about a year, according to my son. Navy pilots do not have that delay.

  • J/J Mom

    Welcome StacyM!!

Our son found out his service selection this morning.  Didn't get what he had hoped for, so i feel bad for him.  heavy sigh

  • NavyMarineMum

Hi Jn/Jf Mom, thanks for the Welcome!

I'm sorry to hear that.  Was it one of his choices?

  • J/J Mom

    StacyM --

He wanted to be a pilot, particularly a helo pilot.  He spent his 1/C cruise on Coronodo Is. at North Island Naval base w/ a helicopter unit, but found out this morning he's been assigned to subs/nuke.  Guess he's too smart for his britches  lol

I've also heard they just need more nukes this year.  Four out of 11 Navy options in his class were assigned to subs/nuke.  Two years ago when our dd was a 1/C they needed lots of pilots. That year only 1 out of 13 was assigned to subs/nuke.

  • helenp

JnJfMom I'm so sorry your son has to face disappointment. My son had been warned that they need subs/nukes and spent the last few months trying to prepare emotionally in case that happened to him. One thing he told himself is that nukes is lucrative and he could buy a new car.

  • NavyMarineMum

helenp, thanks for the welcome!!  That's so cool your Brother taught at Norwich. We'd never heard of it until our someone from their College came to his High School.  He like's it there, however, I'm sad it's his last year there.  We have ran into quite a few people here in the West who have had some relation to Norwich. It's pretty cool!!!

  • NavyMarineMum

Hi ViperGirl, yes, he got his orders this morning. He will be an SWO (Surface Warfare Officer). That was his first pick, he is pretty stoked!  He's studying abroad right now in China.

  • NavyMarineMum

Jn/Jf Mom, I agree with ViperGirl. It all happen for a reason, and things just might change.  What a cool experience for him and how PROUD we are for him to do this!!!!  He just might like it???

  • J/J Mom

Yes, everyone, i agree, and he knows, too that it is God's plan, not our plan for our lives ... (everything for a reason, etc).

And yes, helenp, i agree about the lucrative part -- "One thing he told himself is that nukes is lucrative and he could buy a new car."  He & i have discussed this, too.  He has one particular vehicle in mind & nuke bonus could certainly help with that  haha

He'll get over it.  He wasn't a bit surprised; he expected to get subs, so mentally he was ready, but he still didn't want subs.  I, too am hoping that he easily embraces the "cool" part of it & enjoys the journey.

  • NavyMarineMum

Alaskan Mom, that's wonderful news!!!  How exciting and congrats to you both!!!

Both of our boys have a great future a head of them.  They both knew at a young age what they wanted to do! They will be very successful and we will be very PROUD!!

It's funny when Cory was in 5th grade myself and I were PTCO presidents for his elementary school and I made up a saying "GO NAVY". We'll, it meant Never Again Volunteer Yourself.  Which I have never stopped doing, but now it means a totally different thing to me!!!

  • NavyMarineMum

ViperGirl, that's funny and very true.

  • J/J Mom

ViperGirl & StacyM ... at our MIDN's Unit they call that being "voluntold"  lol

  • kgrmom

Alaska Mom-  I too see the same thing with my daughter :)  When we saw her when she returned from her 7 month deployment it's really just amazing.  The amount of responsibility she has at her young age- but she LOVES it and is just excelling.  I'm so happy for her.  Many of her friends seem to be years behind her.  Actually I find myself constantly telling her younger brothers that in no way am I comparing them to her.  I know they are all different. :)   She has just found her path right now.

Voluntold-  classic.  Just step up and do it because they are going to tell you to do it anyway.  Happened all the time in my daughters unit too :)

  • Jake's Mom

Jake would love to fly. It is hard to decipher the process. Although I do know it can be the hardest to get. We were just talking about it yesterday. Flying is definitely his first choice but he is really looking forward to any direction with the Navy.

  • Jake's Mom

I love to hear the process for others -- thanks so much for sharing your son's story. I know I will relay to my son.

    Merry Christmas,

    Jill

  • Jake's Mom

Does anyone know how the scores run --- for example, what is the average score on the ASTB? What is the lowest one can get and still be considered for a spot. I need some perspective.

  • Jake's Mom

Hope everyone enjoyed the holidays and are ready for 2014!

  • helenp

hanksmom--I agree--but here I'll make you feel better. Not only do we have my NROTC son's graduation and Commissioning which are one week apart in New York State (We live in Missouri.), but his identical twin brother also graduates from college in Ohio the morning after the Commissioning. We have a logistical nightmare. And I'm sure both of them want to participate in all the festivities and will be moving out of their college housing. My husband and I need clones!

  • Jake's Mom

It is bittersweet to watch our "babies" mature ---- they are merely a gift to us for a brief amount of time. You should both be very proud of your kids, their focus and their commitment.

  • Jake's Mom

Well, one of our kids graduated from Cornell. Have you tried the John Thomas Steakhouse. May be worth a call, at least.
  • Jake's Mom

Great advice ---- Alaskan Mom --- I will do just that!

  • Jake's Mom

ViperGirl --- Enjoy either way! Ithaca is a beautiful area!

  • suvwi

    ViperGirl and hanksmom,

Hopefully the wait for TBS won't be too long for your Marines. My DS's original orders were for Jan 14 but those were moved up to Dec 6. Six months on IRR was a long time in limbo. He was lucky, he is the first besides the prior enlisted to go to TBS. Some from his class aren't going until April and May. That is a long time on IRR.

  • suvwi

    ViperGirl,

I think it is more luck of the draw. Aviation doesn't seem to matter since DS has his aviation contract. It also can change at the last minute one of his friends was to  report with him and his orders changed the 2nd week of Nov. But that is the Marine Corps.

  • Jake's Mom

Colorblind test - anyone have issues? Anyone permitted a retake? My son took the test for the second time after his eyes were dilated and he did not pass. Although the first time he took it he got a perfect. Just looking for others experiences.

  • Helomom

Today our DS began his XO/CO tour. It is going to be an interesting couple of years. We so happy all of his hard work is paying off. University of Washington NROTC class of 1997.

  • Helomom

@RoTcMoM - He was the BnCO second semester in 1997.  Great group of people there.

  • kgrmom

    Hi Lukes Mama:

Your son will interview with more than 1 Admiral :D   Good luck to him over the next day or two.  My daughter just started Nuke school- will be a long year.
