I missed a call from my Sailor :(   I miss him soooooo much.
  • Anna

Hi everyone, I'm a new Mom.  I hope I'm doing this correctly.  Our son (admin) is on this ship.  He has been in the Navy for many years and decided before he retires he wanted to do duty on a ship.  He hasn't up until now.  He said it takes some getting used too, but he's enjoying it.  We worry about him now that he's on a ship.  I know it sounds crazy and I can only say it may be because we don't know where he is and can't just pick up the phone and call him.  I know you all have gone through this too and hopefully you have some suggestions for us.  Thanks for listening!
  • Colleen

    Hi Anna,

Welcome!  My Sailor has been in the Navy for about 1 1/2 yrs. and is an OS.  He just turned 20.  He is loving what he is doing.  It is different not being able to talk when you want to but when they do call, it's the thing that brightens up your world.  This is my Sailor's 1st deployment, so things are new to me too.  It's our job as Moms to worry about our children, no matter how old they are.  Check in whenever you need to "get it out" - that's what this site is for.  God Bless You and your son for serving.

  • Colleen

Hey! I finally was home when my Sailor called - on his 20th birthday!!  I cried tears of joy during the call.  It was so good to hear his voice.
  • Colleen

Prayers are going up for you and your son.  Be well Nancy.  Prayers for our Sailors to be safe during rough waters.
  • Anna

What a fantastic day, we talked to our son!  This is the first time he's called since he's been on the ship.  His voice was all I needed to hear.  He said his last port was a relaxing time for him & he enjoyed it a lot.  Also heard from our daughter-in-law.  She's visiting her family in Scotland right now.  She's having a hard time adapting to being away from her man.  Good new here too.  She's going to  come visit us after she gets back to California.  We're hoping she'll stay for a month or , however many she likes.  We'll just be excited to see her too!  Hope you all have a great day!
  • Colleen

Anna, glad to hear that you got to speak to your Sailor.  Life is good.
  • vita3

Hi everyone. My son just graduated A school and they are flying him out to meet the ship in a few weeks.  We are very new to this.  I have a question.  How do we communicate with out sailors?  Do they get to take their laptops and cell phones?
  • Colleen

vita3, they can call once in a while.  I don't know about cell phone use.  They can get emails and send them.  Sometimes email goes down and they can't.  Send them letters and packages.  We've sent packages with stuff in them to share with others and a bunch of letters from people expressing their gratitude.  Having children from schools draw pictures and writing letters is good too.
  • becki(uss stockdale)

just found out yesterday.. my Sailor will be flying out on Sunday to met up with all your Sailors... mom is kind of in shock right now.. but I know he will be in good hands....

  • becki(uss stockdale)

He has been in San Diego for about a week. thought that he would wait there for the ship to return found out with about 3 days notice that he was going to be sent out to the ship... he is a LS
  • becki(uss stockdale)

Vita3 my son and your son are friends..... I think,,, he told me that a guy that he went to A school with is there with him.  If you talk to your tell him thanks for being there for my son... he is going through a really tough time not with the ship but home life ... so tell your son I said thank you....

I hope that my son will be able to return the support if he ever needs it or any other Sailor for that matter..

All the Sailors or on my mind and in my prayers....

  • Colleen

I got the news too.  Bummed out as well as we planned our daughter's graduation party around when he would be home.  That's life in the military.
  • vita3

Thanks for the info everyone.  He was going to meet the ship a few months ago, then they decided not to send him yet.  So he got married a few weeks ago.  Now he's going to meet the ship for the remaining time. I guess this is normal military life?

  • aatlmom

I am new to this site.  My son is on the Stockdale since about July.  Do you all have any info about San Diego and going out to see our sons/daughters?
  • Colleen

Welcome aatlmom!  I haven't been out to see my Sailor in SD, so I can't help you.   But I know some others have been there so maybe they could help.
  • aatlmom

Thanks Colleen!  I haven't heard much except for one time since they have come into port.  Have you heard much?
  • Colleen

Just talked to my Sailor today.  Things are fine.  I usually hear from him once a week.  Nothing when they are underway or deployed until they are in port.  How long has it been since you've talked to your Sailor?  Can he email you?
  • Annie

My son is scheduled to report to the ship first part of March..does anyone know if they will be going on a deployment soon again? He wants to go to Disneyland in May, but doesn't know if he can..

  • aatlmom

I thought they were schedule for deployment in Feb. or March.  How long has your son been in the Navy?

  • Colleen

I believe they are scheduled to deploy July/August.  I don't know whether he can take leave in May.

  • Annie

He just graduated BC 2/3, and is scheduled to report 3/12. He is at GL for A school right now. He is excited to go to San Diego. Do they do may manuevers where they are away from port alot?

  • Reid's Ma

Hi Annie, we were just in SD 2 weeks ago. What a bee hive the wet side of the base is! Seems they refit, test and fix things constantly. But ever so often they go out on manuvers for a week or two at a time. He will love SD! weather! blue sky! sand! and the Stockdale is a great ship! My son's been on it since it was built in Bath. I hope it's a great experience for him.

  • Annie

Thank you for your insite. He just got there Monday after driving from Denver. He did very well by himself!  He told me they will be going out as soon as he gets there for two days..I guess I will have to wait till he has the time to call again on what they are doing. He loves it there, and he is anxious to start his journey.  I like this site to be able to connect with mothers that have sons and daughters on the same ship. It makes me understand more, connect, and seem to release tension better. I look forward to seeing other posts. I hope we all can continue more.  Thanks!

  • aatlmom

I heard from my sailor and he said they will go out on March 12th on the weekdays and will return on the weekends til the end of April.  Our son loves SD!

  • Annie

aatlmom - thank you for that info. I was wondering what he will be doing. How soon do they get to call home after reporting to ship so I can get his address?

  • aatlmom

It took us a few weeks to get an address and I've been very disappointed with their mail delivery. Some letters and packages get to him and some don't.  Your son should be getting an email address sooner than anything.  What state are you all from ?  We are from Indiana.

  • Annie

We are from Colorado. Native. I really do not like it here in the winter. I hate cold, snow, and never do ski.  Wish I could live in warm San Diego. I have a daughter that lives in San Jose and she hates it there. She was stationed in San Diego also and she loved it! What does your sailors do on the Stockdale? I am sure they have really tight, small racks? Is the galley food good? I have so many questions. lol...

  • Reid's Ma

Moms, if your sons/daughters have BEQ off the ship, it's better to send mail there.  If the ship's on deployment sailors have a FPO box and they'll get mail.

    aatimom, we're in Anderson. You?

Annie, my son is a STG2 (sonar tech) and the rack space is better on a distroyer than on a sub!  CP's work REALLY hard in the galley; a job that probably gets more criticism than praise.

  • Annie

Excuse me if I sound dumb, but new to this. What is BEQ mean?  My son was wondering if there was going to be good rack space. My son being a SA, he said he hoped that he could remember evereything he was taught a A school. They threw so much at them in a short period of time.  Haven't heard from him yet since reporting, so hope everything is going well.

  • Reid's Ma

Annie, that's bachelor enlisted qtrs. My son says most new guys live on the ship till they either find or are assigned barracks space off ship --no one wants to live 24/7 where they work! too available! There are pretty nice high rise on the other side of Harbor Dr. (called the dryside of the base) where many live. If we are w/in driving dist. we could get tog. and talk. Are you in central Indiana?

  • aatlmom

I live in Carmel.  If any of you moms are close, let's get together!  My son lives on the ship and is coming home for a couple days next week for some business he needs to tend to.

Annie, have you heard anything yet?  It takes a while to hear anything.  They are so busy!

    Suzy

  • Reid's Ma

Suzy, how do we manage a get tog?  Really?

We could meet at Ham.Town -- I'll have on my Navy pea coat (even if it's 65 degrees again!) and stand in front of a designated store??  : -)

Sorry, got mixed up. Annie, you're too far to meet for lunch!!  But I'd love to see CO

  • Annie

Reid's Ma - thank you for explaining the BEQ.. My son did say he signed up for one, but will take awhile to get. He had liberty this weekend and did everything he possibly could to enjoy San Diego. Having fun! I am sorry I am not close enough to have lunch, darn! So I am guessing now that they are out from port, we won't hear from them for awhile?

  • Reid's Ma

What I got is that they were not to be out long--just testing what they fixed in port. That's what they do...fix and test!  He'll like living off the ship better. You know, sometimes I "google earth" and look at the piers, my sons apt. bldg. and just say "Hi, somewhere you're out there and I am too". Sounds pretty silly, huh....  he's been in 7 yrs. and I miss him alot.

  • Annie

I sure hope he can get a barrocks off ship, keeping my fingers cross for soon! He knows somebody that is on the ship that lives in San Diego, and he stayed with him last weekend. But that will get old as well as the ship. What do you think his chances are of getting into a barrack soon?

  • Reid's Ma

Oh great, I'm mess'n around trying to get Reid's pix on here and I paste his bro and the dog. The dog that passed last year. What I need a teen, a kid to help me!

  • Reid's Ma

Hi all, I did it all bymyself!  Reid and Ma.  aatimom has her son home for a few days; lucky lady. Let me know if we can meet sometime. I work from home Suzy.

  • Annie

Very nice! It is good to put a picture to a face!  Do you think our son's know each other by now?  Have a wonderful weekend with your son!  I wish I could be in San Diego right now.

  • aatlmom

yes, I would like to meet other USS Stockdale moms!  My son comes home Monday til Wed.  My youngest son sufferered a severe injury in January on a ski trip and we are meeting with a neck surgeon also next week.  Praying for a good outcome!  I would like to get together, but it will have to be after we decide if our son needs surgery and if he does, after his long recovery.  I am anxious to see my son on Monday.  I know he's pretty tired and it looking forward to some TLC!

  • Reid's Ma

Annie, I don't know what your son does. Was he the SA (I don't know what that is even!) My son's a Sonar Tech. Since there is a crew of over 300 they probably have not met!

aatimom, bro of a sailor is now on my prayer list (neck injury). Hope all goes well.

  • Annie

aatimom - sorry to hear about your son. My prayers are with you!

Reid'sMa - my son is a Seaman Apprenctice right now until he is eligable to strike in a year. You are right there are alot of sailors and maybe they might meet and or not. I like how it is still smaller than a carrier...lol.

  • Annie

I heard that their deployment has been moved up to possibly January? Anybody else hear the same?

  • ChipsAhoy (ship 3 div 89)

I would like to introduce myself to you ladies. My husband will be joining the ship in a few weeks. Super excited to hear about possible deployment in January ... :) oh military life is going to be great. I can tell already.
  • aatlmom

My son was just home last week.  He did not say anything about deployment being moved, but did say that they were told the ship wasn't ready and that they may not get their deployment leave home that they get before going out.  Has anyone heard anything else?  Also, thanks for prayers for our other son with the spinal cord injury.  He will have another MRI in May to see if neck fusion surgery is needed.  We are praying for a complete healing and a full recovery!

  • aatlmom

Welcome ChipsAhoy!  We hope you enjoy our group!

  • ChipsAhoy (ship 3 div 89)

I am still kind of in shock we made it through boot camp alive... can you ladies tell me when the deployment is supposed to happen?.... although "supposed to' in the military is lovingly a joke... ;)
  • Colleen

Welcome ChipsAhoy!  I haven't heard of the deployment being changed.

  • ChipsAhoy (ship 3 div 89)

When is the deployment scheduled for if it hasn't been changed to January?
  • aatlmom

    It was set for August.
