Wonderful stories you all are telling, I am so glad to be on this page that we all can share experiences. Thank you Amy for the update and I as well am so happy to see pictures on Facebook. It helps to feel connected to them. I am hoping to see one of my son one of these times. I was hearing from him at first for awhile and now I haven't, so Amy's explaination solved that. I know they are busy and I hope they are all doing well.

My son told me that they had their first mail call last week and no one received anything. They all said nobody loved them, then realized they had only been gone a week. LOL!  He said some of the guys were requesting my cookies so I sent some off yesterday along with some girl scout cookies and misc. items. I'm going to a neighborhood Super Bowl party on Sunday and I plan on taking a card so all my neighbors can write a little note to him. I can only imagine how exciting that must be for them to hear their name called at mail call! Have a great day Navy moms!

  • Annie

Just sent off he first care package to him, hope it arrives ok. I enjoy seeing all the pictures on facebook of all the wonderful sailors out there. My son said he likes the extra activities they do, it helps the work day! I enjoy coming on here at the end of  busy or rough day and seeing new posts about something they can share about their sailor and knowing that we are all connected in one way or another as a family with all common interests, our sailors! of which we are proud of! I enjoy this! Thank you!

  • MaggieH

I've sent off care packages twice to my daughter...she still hasn't received them!  They will be in a port soon...maybe she will get them then...

    *sigh*

    I miss her!

  • Colleen

Ditto on the missing my Sailor.  Maggie, what ship is she on?  Mine is on the Stockdale.  I forgot how long it takes to get a pkg. to them on deployment and my Sailor's BD is next week.  I'll put the Easter card in at the same time!

  • MaggieH

Colleen...she is on the Stockdale and my son in law will deploy on the Nimitz

  • MaggieH

These things always make me crazy...if I were to say anything...I would get OPSEC called on me...

But they can print it in a paper and publish it online?

  • Colleen

    Thanks for the article Amy.

  • Lisartru97(Ship 07 Div 359)

    Thanks Amy!

  • Annie

Thank you Amy! Glad they are safely there!
  • Colleen

Thanks for the update Amy!  Good to know about the time difference.

  • Lisartru97(Ship 07 Div 359)

    Voxer app works great!

  • Lisartru97(Ship 07 Div 359)

Talked to my son yesterday and he said he received the boxes I sent him.  I sent the boxes on the 28th of January and was hoping he would get them for Valentine's Day! So happy to hear they arrived so fast :)

  • Annie

I was able to see son on skype, it was wonderful! My son also received his package as well. They did get to them quick. Now to start working on the second one. He wanted a buch of candy on the first one, so I did and some other snacks. Thinking going homemade stuff this time.
  • SailorMom59 (son deployed)

Thank you Amy!!  And thank you EVERYONE for keeping us all informed. I still have not heard a  word from my son.  I'm not worried...I know he's ok. But I miss him bad.  I sent him his care package of cookies and junkfood...I KNOW he'll love it.   Let's see 16 hrs ahead of us...that makes it 10:30pm Wed. here and 2:30pm Thursday there! wow! Thanks for the heads up on that one! :-)

  • Lisartru97(Ship 07 Div 359)

Talked to my son yesterday and he told us that they visited an orphanage and he gave out the See's suckers I had sent him. He told us about their disabilities and about one little boy that was mentally disabled he spent some time with and took pictures with him. My husband knew that they were going to be visiting the orphanage and wanted to tell our son to seek out that one child that is shy or the one that doesn't get the attention but he never got the chance to. So proud that he figured that out on his own. Sounds like he had some amazing experiences in port!

  • Annie

Wonderful pictures being posted on Facebook! The pictures show sailors with the orphanage kids, and they looked so happy. It is nice to see how they are helping out the children. It provides them a sense of pride! Good work!
  • Colleen

Hey Ladies, I have a co-worker who's son is retiring from the Air Force after 25 years.  I believe he is a Chief Master Sergeant.  She would to know if anyone has any idea as to what she could give him as a present at the party.  Any suggestions?  Heard from my Sailor this morning.  What a way to start my day!

  • SailorMom59 (son deployed)

If anyone here can contact their Sailor and tell them to get a message to my son to call me as SOON as possible.... I really need to talk to him. It's very important. I know I can't write his name here, can I?

  • Annie

Have you tried to contact the ombudsman and see what she can do for you? If not maybe through email with one of us we can get the name..
  • MaggieH

    SailorMom59

If it's an emergency...you need to go through the Red Cross...

Message me your son's name and I'll ask my daughter if she knows him...

they are at Sea right now...I doubt he can call until the reach another port

  • Colleen

I dido what MaggieH said.  The ombudsman is an option too.  Is there anything Amyrachelwalker can do?

  • SailorMom59 (son deployed)

It's not an emergency. But it IS pretty important.  I'll message Maggie my son's name...thank you Maggie!

  • SailorMom59 (son deployed)

I got an email from my son, it's all good.

  • Annie

    Very good!!
  • LoriP

I am having problems getting letters returned by the US Post Office with no reason checked. Previous letters and boxes have arrived safely without issue.

The address I am using (provided to me by my sailor) is:

    Sailor's Name
    U.S.S. STOCKDALE
    FPO, AP 96678

    Am I missing something here?
  • Lisartru97(Ship 07 Div 359)

    Hi LoriP.

I just returned from the post office to find out why my Valentine's Day card was returned.I have already sent two boxes that my sailor has received with the same address. They couldn't tell me why and did confirm that the zip code was confirmed because the post office had the same numbers printed across the bottom of my card. The address I have been using is FPO, AP 96678-1205. I sent a box over three weeks ago and he hasn't received that one yet...I sure hope it doesn't get returned! I have another box ready to go, don't know if I will send it yet.

  • Colleen

LoriP and Lisartru97 - this is how I address mine:

    Sailor's Name

    USS Stockdale (DDG 106)

(name of) Dept./ (name of) Division

    FPO/AP 96678-1205

    Does that help?

  • SailorMom59 (son deployed)

My letter was returned today. IA was written on it. I'm guessing it means INSUFFICIENT ADDRESS. ?  I sent it out on the 11th of Feb. Came back today. :(  I have the address all right. Because my son told me, when he got the package of cookies that I had written it right.    so...what's going on??? I'm concerned...

  • Annie

Now I am starting to worry. I sent a package about 2 weeks ago, but haven't received it back yet, and my son says he hasn't got it either. I am about to send off another one as well, hopefully it will get there.
  • Lisartru97(Ship 07 Div 359)

Just sent two boxes...keeping my fingers crossed and praying they get to my sailor!

  • SailorMom59 (son deployed)

I can understand them not getting it...maybe being on hold til they hit port. But why is the P.O. returning to sender?  And not just one of us, but a few.

Not sure if I want to mail out the book my Sailor wants.

  • LoriP

Boxes seem to be arriving fine. It is only letters that are being returned. I took my customs form from the last package I sent and the returned letter to my post office and asked if they could explain why one was being received and the other returned - even though the address used was identical. They did not have an explanation, other than to acknowlege that it was the San Diego PO that was sending the item back - not the local PO. They covered up the returned stamp, wrote "correct as addressed" on the letter and tried putting it through again. No word yet on the status of the letter, but I think it is pretty safe to send boxes. I think I will contact the Post Master in San Diego to get an explanation.
  • SailorMom59 (son deployed)

Thank you, Lori!! I was just about to ask if anyone thought it was safe to send boxes now. I have a pkg to send my son.  :-)

  • aatlmom

Hi!  Has anyone been getting reports/updates from the Ombudsman?  I haven't but she has my email.....

  • Lisartru97(Ship 07 Div 359)

My son finally got his box! I guess I'll just mail cards and letters inside a box from now on.

  • SailorMom59 (son deployed)

That's wonderful news, Lisa!! :-)  Guess I'll do the same! :-)

  • Annie

I sent a package over three weeks ago now, and he said he has not received it. Now that they are in a port will he get it? Hope so!!
  • aatlmom

My son got his package that I sent a few weeks ago.  Sent another one out yesterday.  Hope he gets it.  I have received NO INFO from the Ombudsman though I have again emailed her my info......What can I do?  I want so badly to be included in the informational letters!!

  • Colleen

aatlmom - I have not gotten any information from the Ombudsman in a long time and I'm supposed to be on the list also.  Maybe nothing has been sent out.

  • MaggieH

    aatlmom...

It is taking between 2 & 3 weeks to get to our Sailors.  I sent 2 together and they delivered separately a week apart.

Email the Ombudsman again...if you follow them on FB they are looking for a new Ombudsman...

I can forward you and Colleen the newsletter...if you want to give me your email address!

  • Colleen

Thanks Maggie!  I will request you as a friend on this site and send my email to you.

  • Colleen

    Hi Maggie,

I sent you a message.  We were already friends.  I look forward to seeing the newsletter.

  • MaggieH

Colleen...I just emailed it to you!!!
  • Colleen

I got it!  Thanks!  I am now emailing the Ombudsman to get me on the list again.

  • Colleen

Amy - Jen has added me and has sent me the newsletter.

  • Annie

Great advice Amy. I feel better about sending out another package if it is taking that long, in the gulf. I enjoy facebook and all the information and pictures of the sailors. They are a wonderful! Hoping they are safe out there!
  • LoriP

FYI - when Amy says they are 10 hours ahead, she is talking San Diego time. I live in Florida so they are only 7 hours ahead of me. From talking to my son, it sounds like they are working hard but having the time of their lives!
  • Colleen

    Hi Everyone,

I just got a comment from a N4M on the Destroyer's site and she said that due to cuts and how the military mail is being processed, when writing the ZIP code please include the other 4 digits.  That way you'll know it will get there.

  • Annie

I would like to wish everyone here a Blessed and joyous Easter!
God Bless our sailors and may they be safe in harms way! Happy Easter everyone!
