Maria- Thank you, he is going to be on the gold crew. I am glad to know that your son was on that boat, as I was reading about subs I already said, I hope that he wont be on the Nebraska, and that's where he is going to be. I feel better now that I have met you . He is going to be alright.
@Nesper; @timsmom
SECF stands for Submarine Electronics Computer Field. Fire Control Tech takes care of the electronics/computer for the weapons systems.
Don't know if that means the FT is the one who actually fires the weapons or not.
I just read that, I don't know, he wont tell me. He told me to look it up on the computer.He is very quite when I try to talk about his job. I don't think that he fires the weapons. I need to ask Mark.
@ nesper-this is what my hubs has told me about the job of an ft. dont know if they do more or not but i even looked it up and they say the same thing. my hubs is a sonar tech.. so i dont know much on other rates.
operate submarine combat control systems;
test submarine combat control systems;
operate and maintain combat control systems associated systems;
participate in weapons handling functions and operate and maintain non-tactical computer systems and peripherals
also is this his first sub? also my hubs has been on subs for a few yrs that's why we are here in guam he is stationed on one of the fast attacks here. his first boat was a boomer.
Those "A" schools are all 18 weeks. ET generally means ET-Nav, but a few will be ET-Comm (Radio), which is 20 weeks, I believe, and I think that one also has a "C" school that all ET-Comm's get (not 100% sure, though) - the others only have a "C" school for the top one or two in the graduating class. I grew up in Oswego, BTW...good luck to you guys.
I was able to talk with my sailor son for an hour yesterday! He is doing great and is planning to re-enlist this weekend if all goes well. We are hoping he can come home for Christmas this year, for the first time since 2005!
Patsproudmom-My son and his wife are looking forward to this move, so I am happy now. We use to live in Kent, WA.. I remember how pretty it was but it rained alot.
Hi all! I spoke to my sailor this morning. He had good news.........he re-enlisted today for 6 more years! I am just happy that he is happy with where he is and what he is doing. Can't ask for much more than that!
@Patsproudmom - Congrats on the ET/Nav! My son is an ET/Nav stationed in Hawaii. He really likes it. And the Thames River is beautiful from where I saw it when we were there for my son's Sub School graduation in 2007.
Hi everyone its been awhile. My son is doing great at Pearl. I see by reading everyone comments that friendships are being made :) By the way to mom of Drew not only you, submom and Deb but my son is also on the USS Cheyenne. He is an ET/Comm. Mom of Drew I see your boy is an ST, Deb's boy is a FT, and submom boy is a Machinest Mate. I wonder if they have met since they have different jobs. It would be great that they have and are becoming good friends. My best to all :)
My son just graduated bootcamp and will be on his way to Groton, CT to sub school. I'm looking forward to find out what his designation will be. Does anyone know how long sub school is in Groton?
All of the classes required to graduate take almost a year. That can be 9 months to 12 months. Just depends on how much time he spends ACU (Awaiting Class Up.....waiting for a class to fill up with students to be able to start); health and class grade issues that can happen.
The only graduation you should consider going to it the final graduation ceremony from Sub School. It is not as big a deal as PIR, but is still worthwhile to see them finish their schooling and leave to become a real Sailor after receiving their "Dolphins" (the pin all Submariners must earn to be a qualified Submariner).
BESS graduation is not a big thing at all, unless you live really close, it is not a big deal at all. It just means you have passed Basic Enlisted Submarine School which is the 1st and most basic of the schools/classes he will have.
One good thing about Sub School is that you can talk to him more often than at Great Lakes. Good Luck to your son and to you.
Hi everyone....our son called today to say he passed his board and will be getting his Dophins this coming Friday...we are so proud of him...just wanted to share the happy news :)
You are so right JoAnne we should all be proud when our sailors get their Dophins it is hard work. But when you get that call and hear the excitement in their voices its just so wonderful....I can't wait to get the pictures of my son getting pin :)
Delete Comment I am so excited!!! I talked to my sailor for half an hour this morning (hung up about 15 minutes ago). He sounds great and is excited to be on dry land for a few days.
It really made me feel good to hear his voice. The only problem is, I don't thing anyone has told him about his uncle passing away last month. I won't say anything until I know it is okay to talk to him about it. I sent a message to our ombudsman to see if she knows what I should do.
I finally talked to my sailor long enough to tell him about his uncle's passing. He took it well and was very relieved that his aunt and cousin are doing good.
Hello all. I am new here, and to the Navy. I am Katherine. My sailor is my fiance. He is an ET/NAV, who was AD and is now reserves. I saw the below convo about dolphins, Congrats to them!! I was told it could take 9 months or more to get.
Hi everyone Hello to all the new members to this group. Just wanted to say that I received an email from my son today say that he pass his board and now is a PETTY OFFICER 3RD CLASS we are so proud of him just a few weeks ago he recieved his DOLPHINS.... he will be pinned by his CO within a week. From his email you can tell he was so HAPPY.......hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving :)
Did he just have his big test on Friday? My son did and he passed. I sent you a friend request.....I'll send you my son's name maybe they know each other.
hey ladies, im new to the navyformoms website. My husband left for bootcamp on Dec. 14th and the job he chose is SECF. Do ya'll have any helpful information that I need to know to prepare for what's ahead? If so, I appreciate it :)
There is a lot of information in the discussion above the comment box titled "Links with SECF and BESS info". There are several different jobs under SECF and your husband won't be officially assigned to one until Sub school.
There are a lot of experienced moms, dads, wives and others in this group that are willing to help you. If you have any questions just post them here or start a new discussion and everyone will share their experience with you.
I hope you enjoy our group.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to the SECF group.
Hi - I'm a member of the Groton N4M's group but stumbled on this site today so I'm joining to see what I can learn. My son graduated BC 12/17 and is just nicely settled into his room in Groton, starting BESS 1/3. His first impressions of the Groton base are very positive!
My daughter signed up for the Navy a few weeks ago. She is currently in her DEP's. Doesn't leave for BC til Aug. She did get into the Nuc Program. Unsure of anything else. Am I in the correct place? What do I expect til then? Thanks for your imput and any advice.
Hi Lori, my son is in Groton also, he just graduated BESS school earlier this month. The next step as I understand it is that he will be doing A school in CT. I'm still trying to keep up and put this all together too. My son has said positive things about Groton too! Isn't that good news after all those weeks we as mothers wait until BC is over or even to talk to our boys! It would be great to talk and share what we learn.
Hi timsmom! My son believes his A school will continue in CT too; we have a group of recent PIR moms started in an Alumni group; you are welcome to join it! I'm hoping my son gets hooked into internet and receives his address soon - how long before you son was able to get his computer networked or get you an address. Curious if they all have the same address - just a different room number.
Hi Lori, I think my son is on an adventure because I have to ask a lot of questions and get very minimal feedback. I guess he is not in A school now, he graduated BESS or passed BESS and now is doing Advance Technology Training, he says that A school comes later. Does anyone know how it works? What is your son's job? My son is a NAVET. My son's PIR was October 15, so he's been in CT for a couple of months. If I remember correctly, it was about a week or two before he got his address. I think he told me that he has to set it up and pay for his own PO Box. I did send my son's computer and phone; however, he primarily uses his phone for internet because I think he also has to pay for networking....does that sound right others? In fact, I usually just text him or call him.
Nice having my son finally home after waiting an extra day due to the snow storm we had here in NY....and he gets off the plane in shorts says to me oh kind of forgot that it would be freezing here lol....just happy he's here for the New Year...after this we will not see him since he will be going on deployment sometime in the spring.....boy he looks so grown from the last time he was here:)
timsmom - my son is SECF - for now; he just arrived in CT so he hasn't been assigned further. Yes, they have to pay for Comcast which he and his roommates are having installed next week. I know less than you re: what comes after BESS :-). Did you ever use the questionaire approach in BC - it helped my son answer my curious questions.
My son PIR 9/17 he went straight to Groton. He did BESS then had to wait a few weeks until an Advanced Technical Training class opened. He is now in that and my understanding is that after that he starts A school. Then he will be assigned to a base. Yes the have to pay for internet so usually roommates split it.
My son is an ETNav working on his 5th year in the Navy's Submarine force. He recently re-enlisted for 6 more years, so I am guessing he will be career Navy. That is good with me.
All submariners got to sub school in Groton. Nucs have a different schedule than non-Nucs from what I have heard.
Classes at Groton are:
Bess, ATT, Techno, then specific to their rank (job) if I remember correctly. The only graduation you should try to attend (unless you live close to Groton) is the graduation at the end of Sub School. It is no where near PIR, but it is an awesome experience to see your Sailor ready to move on to their first port. It lasted about 1 or 1.5 hours. The most enjoyment I had was watching the Sailors interact with each other before the ceremony. They make lifelong friends while at Groton. My son still stays in touch with several of his classmates from Sub School. You have the rest of the day to spend with them and I think they can leave the next day.
Can't remember a whole lot about it, except that I was able to talk to my sailor on the phone often. The Groton are is very beautiful and has places of interest to see also.
hey everyone I just started a new group about this company i know, my friends are aprt of it and I wanted to share it to everyone. Its for a great cause and it shows our pride to our troops!!
Hello everyone our son left yesterday back to Pearl Harbor. It sure was great having him here for the New Year. Even thou we had one and a half days less due to the snow storm we had here in New York. He had a great time with his friends and us. He made it back before we got the next storm which hit us today lol. Just wanted to share...best to all :)
Yes and no. He wish he could have stay a while longer. But the cold he could live without lol. He has gotten used to the warm weather in Hawaii I don't blame him for wanting to go back...I would too :).....Hope you had a great holiday.
My son did not like the temps either. It 20 degrees when he arrived, got into the 40's and 50's for several days and was in the teens when he left. He even had to go buy some jeans because he only had shorts!!!
