First, he is not supposed to get married on PIR weekend.  Second, marrying during A school requires he submit a special request chit and get that signed off, and maybe take a class on finances and dependent rights and responsibilities.  Mostly it is to screen for fraudulent marriages, security purposes, and to be sure the new sailor knows what is available to their new spouse.  After A school, just go get married.  Still, the classes are a good idea, explaining stuff like ID cards, medical, BAH, PCS moves, and more.  A good resource.

Essentially, the Navy cannot deny a legal marriage if you are both of age.  Just A school commands know new sailors need more information, and make sure none are falling prey to marriage scams.

  • Anti M

He can do nothing during at RTC toward marriage, as they have no authority over what happens at his next command.

Once at A school, it can take a couple weeks to get approved.  That fits in pretty well with his liberty phases.  Just because you marry doesn't mean he gets to love with you right away, so there should be no rush.  Which A school will he be attending?  I could give a better answer if I knew.

Does anyone know where it's best to live off base in Great Lakes ,Illinois ? Also what is better an apartment or a house to rent ?
  • Jenni1453

Teddi; Gurnee and some parts of Waukegan are good. Libertyville and Grayslake also. We've lived in the area for almost a year.
  • Anti M

@Halie.... in general, seems to take a week or two to get the chit and classes done.  Once you're married, that goes into the record right away.  Can take about a month for the BAH to kick in, and for his Live Ashore packet to be approved.   You will need to pay for the move yourself as you were not married beforehand.  He will need a car to be approved to live with you.

  • Texasmom

Antim, so a sailor Has to have a car to be approved to live off base wth wife?
  • Jenni1453

I think the car thing depends on if you are choosing base housing or off base housing. In Great Lakes, I know several ladies who live with their husbands in base housing without a car. I don't know of any off base housing sailors without a car. They need to know that he won't miss school or work because of not having a ride.
  • NavyWifey12

Hey y'all! We are moving to WA next month and it will be our first PCS. Any recommendations on whether to live on base or off first?
  • Anti M

It depends on the A school, but in general, they have to have their own transportation.  It is true that at Great Lakes, the housing is close enough they can walk.

  • DieselLady

A school question- my husband is currently at a school great lakes. I am going up there this weekend to visit. We are trying to find things to do since he has to have a buddy with him, my question is am I allowed in the barracks at all? to hang out and play video games or anything?

  • Jenni1453

No you can't go into the barracks. You can be on the Quarterdeck and in the lobby area, but that's all. There are plenty of places on base that you can go. The Loft is popular and fun. Games and things. There's a movie theater and some restaurants as well. If you're married, your husband can fill out a liberty buddy deviation chit, even on phase one. He needs to fill one out for every day you want to take him. You'll be able to take him off base alone as long as he has the chit. It'll get approved as long as he puts it in on time. Once he's phase 2, he can do a deviation chit and also an overnight chit. That will also be approved if filed on time. And you can have him the whole weekend. But if he has watch, he has to report back for that day. Aim for a duty free weekend.
  • Jenni1453

If you're coming up this weekend though, there's no way of getting the chit. They usually need to be turned in by that Tuesday or Wednesday. Good info for the future though. :) Enjoy your time.
  • DieselLady

    Thank you Jenni!
  • Maria

Hello all! My boyfriend left for BC on 1/6/16 and before he left he said he was going to request something called rap duty. Does anyone know much about this? Is it hard to get? Thank you!
  • Anti M

It is Recruiter Assistance Program.  He can use it for five days between A school and his first command.  Basically, he takes leave between the two, then helps the recruiter for five days with things like visiting parents and schools.  Then the recruiter puts in the paperwork, and he gets five days or earned leave back.  yes, it is very easy to get, but he gives up some of his time while he is home on leave.  Not too much though, it really is a good program.

  • Jenni1453

Everything that Anti M said. He won't be able to apply for it in RTC. He'll have to wait until he's on the way to his first command, after A school.
  • Maria

Okay, so can he get it directly after bootcamp?
  • Maria

Never mind. I re-read who you both wrote! Thank you very much for the help!!

Just found this app! "New to the Navy", figured it could be helpful to some of us. Haven't had a chance to look through the app yet. http://www.navy.mil/submit/display.asp?story_id=92264

Hello! So my husband went to the live ashore place in GL he's AECF and asked if the Navy paid for our move and they told him that , that would come out of our pockets and if he we decide to live off base they take away the fixed allowance . I had read something else that the Navy could expense the move and that they don't take away that fixed allowance . I just want to know if this is true I keep hearing different things , Does anyone know? Thank you
  • Jenni1453

My husband is AECF. The navy will pay for your move. If you move your own things, you pay at first and the Navy will pay you back. If he schedules a time for the Navy to send movers, you'll pay nothing out of pocket.
You get BAH (housing money ) if you live off base. If you choose base housing, you don't get it because you aren't paying rent.
  • Jenni1453

Your husband needs to go to both CPC and Household Goods. There is a new worker in the CPC office that was giving people some incorrect information. Maybe this is who your husband spoke with. Ask him to go back and talk to a supervisor there.
  • bear123

Ok that's what I thought thank you so much :) ! Also does anyone know if our military ID's are our card for dental coverage from Tri care ?
  • wigglyturtle

Tricare doesn't cover dental. Dental is separate through Metlife, though once you are signed up for that, I believe you do use your mil ID for that too. I have the insurance, but I haven't used it yet, so I'm not 100% on that bit - I didn't receive another card though, so I'm assuming on that one.

Its similar to signing up for tricare prime, you have to do it in advance and it doesn't start til the 1st of the  next month as long as you sign up by a certain date. It's like $11/month for spouses.

  • Jenni1453

They raised the price of dental for 2016. I think it's 20 something now.

My boyfriend and I have been together for almost 5 years and we want to get married sometime in the next few years. We're both still young and our parents want us to wait. I'm also nervous that it may effect my college financial aid in a negative way. Does anyone know how being married effects college financial aid? Are there benefits of being a military spouse? Any information will be helpful. For further information, I'm in a 4 year nursing program which is a bachelors degree. Thank you for the help!
  • Jackie

Maria, the effect on your financial aid depends on how much you're making now and how much your income with be as a household
  • Maria

Ok so is it still the same even if we don't live together for the whole year? Like during the school year I'll have to be at school because transferring isn't an option but during the summer we'd live together?
  • Jackie

I don't think the living situation would effect it but some schools are different
  • Maria

    Ok thank you!
  • Sophia

Maria my situation is kind of similar to yours.. I am pursuing a nursing career and we got married while I was already in school.. If u r also working it will depend on ur total income. Even if u only live with him in the summer ur income as a whole counts as soon as u r married. Remember u will now qualify for mycaa which might help u somewhere along the road with completing ur bachelors as u can apply that $4,000 towards ur degree
  • Maria

I'm not working much, just here and there when I'm home from school. And I thought MyCAA is only for an associates degree?
  • WifeofaUSsailor

Maria- I am pursing my bachelor's online in Graphic Design with SNHU. I get about $300 taken off each class for being a military spouse. My dad has been very sweet and is helping me with classes but I know that there are lots of different scholarships and grants you can apply for. My husband and I got married at 19 and our parents also told us to wait at first but then they realized it was the right decision for us and completely supported it. When you know, you know! But you can definitely make school a priority still it just takes some research and finding the right school for you. :)
  • Maria

wifeofaUSsailor, we are both 19 and I'm sure with further discussion with our parents they'd approve. Thank you for your help!
  • WifeofaUSsailor

No problem! Good luck to you!
  • frog12

Hi ladies! My boyfriend is graduating on January 29th (it couldn't get here faster) and he will be heading to Pensacola for A-PACT. I was wondering how long it will take him to phase up and get liberty so I can go visit him? I know they tend to phase up faster in A-PACT because they aren't there as long, and I would like to try to visit him while he is there. Any knowledge would be helpful. Thank you!

  • Bronco14

I have no experience with A-PACT but my sailor has been to a few different schools and training commands so maybe I can help! Do you know approximately how long A-PACT is? It seems to depend on length but it also is variable on how well the class is doing, if anyone gets in trouble, and just the nature of the school itself. To give you a very general idea, my sailor has taken an average of 2-3 weeks to phase up to phase 2, and 4-6 weeks for phase 3. But that is very general and again his school wasn't A-PACT.

But I have visited my sailor about five times while he's been in school, and a couple of those have had to been worked around due to a sudden change in his liberty. Once his class got a total lockdown for the weekend (very special circumstance and totally not normal, likely won't happen to your BF) and instead of him being able to leave all weekend like we planned, I booked a hotel room on base to hang out there. And at the time it seemed like the end of the world, but it actually turned out to be on of the best visits ever. Sorry if I am rambling, I guess what I am trying to say is I have learned that it always works itself out! Hope that helps a little :)

  • NavyWifey12

Hi Frog12 my husband isn't in FL but he's in TX for MA school but it took them about 4 weeks to phase up. This is because they kept getting tier phase cards taken. Id say it takes some time but his school was only two months.
  • Sophia

My husband is also A-PACT he graduated 6/29 and I got to visit him in pcola that same weekend for Thursday thru Sunday. It was also 4th of July weekend so idk if that's an exception to anything but 2 weeks after that I got to go back and spend time with him for another four days. Idk if u guys have to be married for him to request to spend overnight with u but make sure he asks! If u have a military ID u can also hang out with him on the base
  • Bronco14

A little random question of my own for all you wives, should I be getting a passport anytime soon? My sailor is still in training and while he could be stationed statewide afterward he could always be stationed at a hospital outside of the country. We plan to get married before his training is through, do military wives need passports to go with their sailors overseas? Thanks in advance!
  • Anti M

I think it is a good idea to have a passport anyway, so you can travel if needed.  Military passports cannot be used for leisure travel.

Be aware that the Navy does not send dependents overseas until the sailor is an E-4 or above.  Even married, if he is still a junior sailor, he wont be taking you with him if he gets OCONUS orders.

  • Anti M

A-PACT is only three weeks long, he won't get to phase three which allows overnight visits.  Not sure how fast he classes up, or how long he'll be in indoc, but I would be surprised if he is there for longer than four or five weeks.

  • Anti M

It is a little slow, but here is the undesignated forum:

    http://navyformoms.com/group/momsofundesignatedsailors

He can take leave after he finishes his training (it is not A school like the others), so that is nice to know.

Question for anyone who may know, I may have to go on a different page but figured I would ask. My boyfriend graduated bootcamp Friday and is now across the street at TSC in Great Lakes for BUD/s Prep and as of now he will be there until April 4, 2016. Will he get to Phase 3 where he will have overnight Liberty? He said they will be able to but I wanted to check if anyone knew for certain. Thanks!
  • Anti M

The rules say 30 days in phase one, and four weeks in phase two, but I have heard of it being accelerated. Just don't know which schools move them forward quicker.  About the time he makes phase three, he may be coming home on leave!

    https://www.facebook.com/notes/training-support-center-tsc-great-la...

  • sailormaid

It can also be delayed; when my husband was at TSC they never advanced them to Phase 3. They basically make up whatever rules they want. But even without overnight liberty it's worth it to visit and see him during the day!

  • Bronco14

SC_girlfriend, my boyfriend was also in prep last summer. Here is my time line so you can get an idea: he graduated bootcamp July 17, got phase 2 on August 15, the weekend I visited him. So that was almost 30 days. I visited him again on labor day weekend, he still had phase 2 and I think they got phase 3 one or two weeks later. I wish he had overnights, but it wasn't too bad. I would drop him off around 11:30 since curfew was at midnight, and then I would go get him as early as 5:45am. I have a military ID so it was much easier since I could get on base and stuff. There were a couple other guys with girlfriends visiting the same weekend I did, so I took a handful of guys off the base with mine haha. Please message me if you have more questions about it! Good luck to you and your sailor!
  • Jenni1453

Also, once he does hit phase 2, he can put in a chit for overnight. It's usually granted for wives or fiances.
  • Anti M

The overnight chit very much depends on the individual school, and the individual sailor.  Can't hurt to try, but there isn't a hard and fast rule to go by on special requests.

  • Navyfam

Hmm... So my husband should graduate in mid-March and then will be in Great Lakes for Aecf so we plan to move there. He was told it would be 2-4 to put his live ashore request in. How long do you think is reasonable to expect before we could join him?
