Hi Michael, I know it's hard but keep showing pictures and let her know that daddy is working. My husband was in a year, then our son was born but now even with underways here and there I still have to let him know that daddy is at work. So, that's what he thinks. He's only 3, so he don't fully understand everything but understands daddy being at work.

I'm not sure which group to post this in but this group is always so helpful lol. Can anyone tell me the protocol for sailors driving to their first command after A school? My sailor got a travel brief but since no one had their orders yet it didn't seem to be too informative. He said he needs proof of insurance and his drivers license, but doesn't need the car's registration. Is this correct? Also, if the car is not in his name but it is insured, why would he need insurance? Or does the car need to be his? We're a bit confused, any help appreciated!

I hope your question gets answered. My husband flew to A school and didn't get his car until we moved to our first duty station, but I would think he would need car registration as well. We have the car registration and insurance cards in our car at all times.

My husband's car was in my FIL's name. Is it saying he needs the insurance cards or insurance in general?

The car's registration and proof of insurance should always be with the car! We have to keep copies in the glovebox at all times. He will need proof of insurance to get it on base, and to get a base sticker (Navy still does those). He does need something to show he is on the insurance, and in addition, I've seen them ask for proof he has permission to be driving someone else's car. It might vary by base.

Hi Bronco14. My husband and I did that from Corpsman school two weeks ago. He needs his car registration and proof of insurance as well as his drivers license. The car registration and proof of registration however has to be in his name. I was driving over so we took mine first since its the car we were going to use anyway, however whoever was in the office rejected that and said they needed a car in his name. So we ended up shipping his car over, me flying over then the two of us driving to his command. Let me know if you have any other follow up questions.

Anti M, We have the registration and insurance in the car!! I don't know anyone who doesn't... lol. Thanks Vee, we are doing this from Ft. Sam so I'm sure it will be the same process. I'll talk this over with him and let you know if I have any other questions :) Thanks so much!!

The AF base near us went to just ID too. However, now and then the security threat level goes up and they do random vehicle checks, which includes R&I. I have a friend give me a ride to base who was very casual about her car's paperwork. Sigh, it was not a great day.

It's weird to me that they wouldn't accept a vehicle registered in your name NavyWife2011, since you two are married. You would think that would be acceptable haha. We're going to Lejeune. Not sure about the sticker policy there? I am pretty sure we could get him on our insurance... I am still insured under my parent's policy... does the insurance have to be primarily in his name or could he be under someone's? This is such a pain...

Bronco14, oh no we never had a problem with our cars. When, we got to our first duty station we provided the necessary paperwork for both vehicles and that was it. We got the stickers. I think after the first couple of years they did away with them. But we never had a problem, thank God! That's why I don't understand why they're making the process so hard for you guys. They accepted our vehicles. What about you guys getting your own policy? When, we first got married of course we were still under our parents, but I don't know how it works since he wants to have the car at A school. I see and I feel for you because you guys have bigger stuff to worry about. It will work out!

Oh, I thought you had a problem that you wanted to drive your car to your husband's first command, but it had to be in his name? My sailor is finishing up Corpsman A school, not going to it :) My fiance and I were planning on taking my car (we'll be married by the time we leave San Antonio) to his next command. But he needs insurance, which he hasn't had since joining the Navy. I can put him under my parent's policy with me, but the car is not registered in his name. He was told that he won't need to show registration, just the insurance and his drivers license. Sorry if I am a bit confusing :)

My son and his wife recently drove "her" car to his first permanent duty station. The car is in her father's name, but it is insured under her name with him as a driver. The Navy was OK with that. They did get a notarized letter from her father stating that they had permission to drive the vehicle. Not so much because the Navy required it, but in case they were stopped or had an accident since it would be in a different state than the registration. They drove from Atlanta to WA state. They keep that letter in the glove box as well.

Bronco14, oh I'm sorry I thought he wanted it in A school. We didn't have any problems at the first command. His car was in his father's name and listed as a driver. My car was in my name. I see what you're saying now, so listed as a driver should be fine. We were only married for 2 months to going to his first command, so of course insurance was still in our parents name. We were still under their policy.

Only A schools over 20 weeks authorize the student sailors to live off base. Most schools are too short. If the school is long enough, the sailor submits a Live Ashore packet requesting permission to live with their spouse. Usually it takes around a month to get everything approved and the family moved to the area. Some bases offer base housing (not always on base), some do not and require you to rent in town. So, which A school?

C school doesn't count, technically those are separate orders from A school. 130 days falls a week short. EM? GSE? He will need to ask at his school when he checks in on Friday.
Also, frustratingly enough, he will be there longer than the stated seat time. But the time on hold does not count.

If he is AECF, there is nine weeks of ATT (electronic prep) before A school. That counts for accompanied orders. The only school at Great Lakes long enough is ET or FC in the AECF program. I've heard GSE is, but haven't had anyone confirm that.

@ Nicole, yes, that usually is no problem. Some of the schools require he put in a chit for that to happen, so he should check the policy.

Looks like cooler (40s) and wet. Sweater weather, with a light jacket. Nice jeans, or warm tights and boots. Wear layers, in case it gets a little warmer or cooler in the drill hall. It will be cold early in the morning, when you have to line up to get in! If you're someone who lives where it is warm all the time, bundle up a bit more. Maybe gloves and a hat for the morning.
