Micheal then you should be good to go...the power of attorney give the authorization to sign any documents dealing with business including banking. So you can go into your bank or his and tell them that your spouse is in boot camp and you have power of attorney and you need to get into his acct. you shouldn't have any problems
  • Michael

Ummm what's bas and fsa? That is something I don't know about
  • Anti M

FSA is the Family Separation Allowance.   BAS is basic allowance for sustenance.  BAS is given when a sailor lives off base and has meals at home instead of being fed by the government.  But is is not intended for dependents, so goes away when the sailor deploys (or is in training).

  • Anti M

Anything which is a "pay" is taxable, allowances are not.

  • Paige

Do any of you guys know about Great Lakes Naval Station housing.? Like where too go for paperwork too request housing.? Ive heard it is at the CPC on base, I just don't know where that is located on base. Thanks!
  • Michael

I know BAH housing rates for E1 are $1059 at Great Lakes phone number is 847-688-3440 or go to Greatlakeshousing.com
  • Megs2447

Hi all! Now that my sailor is in A school at Great Lakes we want to get POA. How can we go about that? Any know?
  • Michael

Megs2447. Getting a POA is easy you can down load one off line then take it in to your bank and have them notorize it then you have a POA. Don't sign it before you go there because they won't sign it
  • Anti M

Paige, here is the website for housing at Great Lakes:

Is there a nice detailed list anywhere on this site or elsewhere of everything I need to do as a new Navy spouse? I'm slightly overwhelmed!
  • Claire

I found this app to have a lot of good resources and links for the new spouse. Especially with explanations about pay and allowances. Also a dictionary of the new acronyms you'll run into.

We're almost at the 4 week mark (4 weeks Tuesday) and still no call.  Anyone with experience in this that may know why?

  • Bronco14

    Thank you Claire!
  • thinNavyblueline

@jss37028 There's tons of factors that come into play with calls. My boyfriend gave up his call so that his shipmate who had watch duty could go call his wife and kids. So your recruit may be on watch or may have taken somebody's watch, or the RDCs may not have given them an opportunity to call. I know it's tough but just keep your eyes on the "I'm a Sailor!" call! I'm in week 5 and that's keeping me going!

  • abuon18

Jss37028-My husband had to have his wisdom teeth removed when he got there and was in SIQ when his division got their first call.
Like thinNavyblueline said, their RDC's just may not have given them a phone call yet - they are not guaranteed. They are earned based on performance and behavior, and just one recruit not performing or behaving up to standards can get a call "taken away" for the entire division. Are you a member of your loved one's division page on here?
  • jss37028

I know he was on duty last Sunday, during Easter.  Maybe he was on duty on Saturday too.. Those are the days they got to call.  I guess I will just hold tight until 5 weeks.  I am on the PIR 4/29 page and his group page for DIV 170.  There is just one mom and myself that we know of that didn't get a call.  Just hoping for some insight.  I know his entire Navy career will be relatively unpredictable, I just can't wait to hear form him at this point. Thanks aboun18 and thinNavyblueline!

  • Michael

My husband is 170 and my phone call was 12 minutes. Better then nothing but my father who worked at boot camp 8 years ago said recruits never used to be able to call home. It was only letters. The job was zero contact with the outside world as you have your job in here. That might change again with a new general and new president
  • Anti M

I was in boot camp much longer ago, and we had a few phone calls.  I had no one to call as my brother was at work, and my parents were working in Saudi Arabia.  That was depressing, but freed up a phone for another recruit.  I wonder why your dad said there were no phone calls?  Because even on this board, in posts eight years old, people talk about those precious calls from RTC.  Maybe another branch?

Our political leaders have next to nothing to do with the day to day activities of the military at training commands, although an uptick in the tempo of operations might happen (longer deployments), and the budget gets rearranged.  You have to take a very long view...

  • abuon18

Jss37028 - I'm sorry everyone else got their calls! That happened to me when my husband was in boot camp top, since he has his wisdom teeth removed I saw everyone else in the group page for his division poating about their phone calls and I was wondering why I didn't get one. It was really depressing. But just know that there IS a reason, even if you don't yet know WHAT it is....could be one of a million things and you can bet your house that if he had the opportunity to call you, he would have!
  • Michael

Anti M my father was a marine. They never got phone calls he told me even when he was in the service. My grandpa is dead so I can't ask him. Lol
  • jss37028

aboun18 - It is very depressing.  I know he is okay and that he's thinking about me etc, because I did finally get all of his letters last week.  Like everyone else here, I just miss him soo much and it's hard not to worry!   :)

  • Anti M

A Marine, that explains it!  My grandfather was a Marine, but in WWI.  Had his leg machine-gunned off on Nov.18!  He died in 1941, long before I was born.  My father was Navy though, a crusty old Masterchief.   I know every joke about the Marines, and none of them are polite enough to share.  Have you seen a movie called The Last Detail?  You might enjoy it, old movie with Jack Nicholson as a sailor.

  • Paige

Does anybody know how long it takes for the Navy too process the paperwork for living with dependents during A school.?
  • Michael

Anti M. I have not seen that movie.
  • Anti M

Paige ... roughly a month from what I've seen posted here.  Depends on the school.

  • Michael

Anti M you know the saying with th military hurry up and wait. Lol
  • Lindsey

So, while my husband was at bootcamp I needed to send in documents to be listed on his insurance. He's in A school now, and he said that they should've sent me some forms in the mail, but I haven't gotten any.. What do I need to do exactly to get a military ID? Are there forms I'm supposed to get in the mail? My daughter is already covered but I guess for some reason they had problems processing my info. Any advice would be appreciated!! :)
  • Lizzie_Corpsmanwife

Lindsey you should have received the form probably 2 weeks into his boot camp which is weird if you didn't. I received the box then I received the form you take to the nearest base to get your military ID.
  • Kelsie

See I never got that form either. I got his box and the letter with all the graduation info but nothing that looked like something I could get my id with.
  • Michael

Takes longer then two weeks most get it in week 6. My husband is in boot camp and I have yet to recive mine and my recruiter told me not until 6 weeks in do you get that form
  • Lizzie_Corpsmanwife

Oh ma have things changed in two years. My husband has been in for two years and I remember getting his box day 5 and the letter for DEERS week two.
  • Navywifejac

My husband is in boot camp now and I received those letters in week 2 but all you need is a power of attorney to get and id Lindsey
  • Anti M

By week two or three you should have a letter with a signed form DD 1172.  He needs to send you that.  A POA might work if you have one, but some bases will vary on policy.

Use the RAPIDS locator and call the office, see what they need to issue an ID for you.  If you already have a POA, see if they will accept that.  If not, write to your husband and let him know he needs to arrange to sign and send a new 1172.

    https://www.dmdc.osd.mil/rsl/appj/site?execution=e2s1

If you need to, you can call Great Lakes Public Affairs Office and ask for guidance.  Your form might have been lost in the mail.

    http://www.bootcamp.navy.mil/contact.html

  • Lindsey

Yeah, my husband sent the box to his mother and since he needed me to send my info such as social and birth certificate, I still haven't gotten anything. He is in A school now
  • Anti M

A school ... okay.  New plan.  Call or text him and tell him to get his ass in gear.  He needs to let his CPC know his spouse does not yet have her dependent ID card and get a DD 1172 to you ASAP.

If I were his LPO, I'd be kicking his ass verbally about now.  May be why he's dragging his feet, he knows he's going to get chewed out for letting it slide.

  • Anti M

Good morning... I hope my last post didn't scare anyone!  Just be aware that your sailors are expected to take care of business concerning their dependents.

  • Bronco14

Where does my sailor go to update his page 2 and any other paperwork he needs to complete since we just got married? We are going into the DEERS/ID office once my birth certificate gets here, but I am wondering what else we need to do?

  • Anti M

He talks to the CPC at his command, it is what they do.  He will need a certified copy of your state ID/DL and your SSN card, the marriage certificate too.  Shouldn't need the birth certificate, unless the ID office is being stubborn.

  • Bronco14

They were very adamant about the birth certificate. Which is especially annoying since I have already been a mil dependent so I am already in the DEERS system... but we are at a Marine Corps base... so that may be why they are being stubborn. The piece of paper I was given with the requirements say "NO exceptions... per rules of USMC headquarters" haha... but okay he checks into his new command tomorrow so hopefully he will find out who is CPC is soon. Thanks Anti m!!

  • Anti M

Marines, yeah, they can be stricter than other branches.  LOL, future advice to anyone else marrying on leave ... if there is an Air Force base nearby, go do the DEERS/ID stuff there.  They are always much easier and nicer than the Marines.  Navy bases tend to be busy for some reason.  No experience with Army bases and dependent IDs.  This can be done at any base, not just your sailor's command or homeport.

  • Lindsey

Hi! I got the forms in the mail a few days ago so everything is good. Is there anything else I need to bring to the DEERS office? Anything I need to bring for my 18 month old? Thanks!! Just want to make sure I don't miss anything.
  • Michael

It's easy and painless. Just make sure you have two forms of ID government issued a DL and passport is what I used. Only you will get a card your 18month old does not get a card. They have to be 10 to get cards. I used my daughters BC and passport
  • thinNavyblueline

Hey all, quick question. My boyfriend wants to be on his own phone plan after bootcamp graduation and does not want his previous phone from a different plan. That phone has since been cancelled. Has anyone had experience with their Sailor getting a new phone after bootcamp as opposed to the old one being brought to the airport? Since he'll be able to have electronics again, I want to make sure we'll be able to call and text as soon as possible and I wasn't sure if there would be any waiting period. Thanks!!!

  • Anti M

He can get a new one on liberty after PIR, but the problem is he can't take back to RTC that evening. It still has to be handed off at the airport the next day.
  • Anti M

Some A schools, but not all, restrict the use of electronics for the first two weeks. I don't know which ones,it seems to vary. All of them do not allow phones in the school, or used while walking, or while on duty/watch. Some barracks have lousy signals. Be prepared to be partially unplugged part of every day.
  • thinNavyblueline

@Anti M, thanks so much! So basically, if he does not get one while on liberty in GL, there's a good chance he may have to wait a few weeks after his arrival to A-school to purchase one?

  • Anti M

He might have to wait, but if he does not, he can get one on base at the NEX, or on his first weekend of liberty when he can go into town.  Just a couple weeks at most, I'd think.

  • thinNavyblueline

Great, thanks! We were so focused on researching bootcamp that I didn't really think to research what happens after, and now he's not here so I can't ask! I appreciate the info!

  • Loren

Hi everyone! So my husband leaves for bootcamp April 25th. He's in the A Pact program and I'm wondering if anyone is familiar with it? I'm trying to figure out on average how long it would take until I move since A Pact means his A school will be shorter. Also, I'll be getting my ID while he's in bootcamp and theyll send me the papers?
  • Anti M

    Hi Loren!

Yes, you will get paperwork for an ID when he is still in boot camp.  You can use the RAPIDS locator to find a place nearby to get one made, it doesn't need to be Navy.

APACT is so short, he may have orders in hand when he leaves RTC.  Do not start packing, but do begin the clean up and organization process.  Create a file of important papers, get your car ready (Navy doesn't ship cars), and begin throwing out or donating anything you do not need.  It will give you something to do while he's in boot camp.

Since he hasn't left yet, go get a POA.  Also, look over these links with him about what to do before he leaves, when he gets paid, the PACT program, and the boot camp group.
