Crush73-Someone may have more updated information if policies have changed since my husband was there in 2011 but when I would visit him he would need a "liberty buddy"-one of his fellow Sailors - to sign each other out. Alternatively, he could put in a chit to request me as his liberty buddy. There might still be time for him to get that in and turned around. They were usually pretty quick, my husband would put them in the week before (we were not married at the time), but it might just be something to consider for future. Were you planning on signing him out overnight or just during the days?
  • NavyWife2011

When my fiancé then(husband now) was there, he was able to stay with us pretty much the entire day until we left. He didn't stay overnight, just had to be back at a certain time and if I remember correctly it was like maybe 7pm or somewhere around that time. It was nice Bc at this point at least he had his phone, so we text all night. Then, woke up and we went and got him that morning. This routine until we left, then like the next day he went off to A-school. We stayed for about 5 days.
  • Michael

First off you can not sign the out over night. They must be in there barracks by 9pm no later unless he is given a earlier time. You will him back at GL by 7pm because he will have to walk about a half mile or so to where he has to go. His Liberty buddy can be his husband ,wife, mom, dad,or older sibling, or anyone over the age of 18. He or she can't drive, smoke or drink any alcohol and they do check them
  • Cerena

@Crush, tell him to put in a liberty buddy chit today! it might still get approved. I visit my fiancé in the GL once a month and I'm always able to sign him out overnight (for the weekend) He usually turns in his chit on Monday for me to sign him out Friday's.

Quick question- do I need just 2 forms of ID or does my daughter as well? She's only almost 2 so I was just wondering

Question-- visiting the DEERS office today, does my daughter need 2 forms of ID or just me since I'm getting the ID?
  • Michael

Well your daughter will NOT get anID. All you need is the BC and or a passport. The Did not need my passport for her when I did my 3 year old
  • abuon18

Crush73 - they make exceptions for PIR weekend but the rest of the time it does have to be immediate family or a fellow Sailor, unless a chit is a approved. I hope you hear back soon and enjoy your time together!
  • Bronco14

I am really starting to stress out! My husband hasn't gotten his page 2 updated yet. We tried to go into the DEERS office to get my new ID but were turned down because I didn't have my birth certificate. I have it now, but my husband has started his new training (FMTB) and has no idea who to talk to or where to go to do this. He doesn't have a CPC that he knows of... and we are on a marine base so there is a lack of understanding and communication about this process. The DEERS office closes at 4 and he isn't done by then. Who do we need to talk to? Can I do this for him? This is so frustrating...

  • Anti M

Two things to try: he needs to talk to his chain, let them know you are not in DEERS.  Second, contact the office, see if they will take a specific POA to allow you to do the enrollment.  Shouldn't be too difficult to get one done off hours.

Other thoughts, is there a chaplain you can talk to?  I know that sounds weird, but they may know solutions we might not.  Also, does his school have a dependent or family liaison?  They might be able to help.  I know you can google it, I'd try, but do not know if you are east or west.

  • Michael

I don't know if you need a POA for your DEERs because they did it ask for mine at GL I gave them the form and two forms of ID and 5 minutes later I had my ID
  • Bronco14

I technically am in DEERS (dependent of my dad, before I got married) so I don't know if that makes a difference in anything. I will contact the office tomorrow about a POA. That presents another problem... how can we get a POA if he is busy M-F during any regular business hours?

I don't know how hard he is trying but he said he is getting the run around. He asked someone above him about it and they passed him off to someone else who didn't know what he needed to do. He said it doesn't help that no one there is exactly friendly or willing to help... We are East. I have no idea if his school has a family liaison... he really cannot find out anything and I don't know where to begin.

  • Bronco14

Michael, when we went in last week they asked for my husband's CAC card. So I am assuming he has to be there. We are on a marine corps base and they seem to be much more strict.

  • Michael

Bronco14 then go to a navy base nearby. Maybe it will be better because you can go to any armed forces base to get your DEERs ID
  • Bronco14

There isn't one remotely close to us... and I don't know if I'd risk going by myself. I've been a military dependent my whole life and have always had to have my sponsor with me. Thank you though!

Is the DEERS office where my husband could update his page 2 also? I'm just confused on where he can do that so we can start getting BAH.

  • Anti M

You're at Lejeune?  Try asking the Navy PSd (personnel) on FB

    https://www.facebook.com/PSD-Camp-Lejeune-NC-100354726689677/

  • Bronco14

Yes. Anti M, you are a saint. I will message them now. Thank you!!

  • Anti M

Crush, yes, you can visit him on base, although he will have to meet you and escort you.  There is stuff to do, places to eat, a movie theater, bowling, etc.

Check out Great Lakes MWR ... Morale Welfare and Recreation:

    http://www.mwrgl.com/

Heck, if the weather is nice, you can rent a freaking boat and go out on the lake!  Assuming one of you knows how to boat...

  • Anti M

Is the marina open already?  I know it shuts down for the winter.

  • Anti M

Packages are never delivered directly to the sailors for security purposes.  Can't have delivery guys running around base.  It goes to the post office on base/his school's mailroom, and they send him a notice.  Up to him to go get it during business hours. If he is in class, this can get tricky.

In the future, use USPS, it goes though one less step once it reaches the base.  Overnighting just gets it to the base quicker, not to him much faster at all.

  • Anti M

Also, because it is a school command, there is a chance he may have to open it in front of someone to be checked for contraband.  This happens at Great Lakes, but not sure if nuke school does it.

  • Wildcat_girl

Does anyone know or have experience with little creek/fort story? Good, bad, the ugly?

  • Anti M

That was my husband's first duty station, long before I knew him.  I do know  joint service bases can be either very uptight because the Army has a stick up their butt, or very close knit and relaxed if you're working with Air Force.  That close to DC, there may be more emphasis on protocol and security, which is annoying for family.

  • Megs2447

Hi Crush73-did the chit get approved??  I need to know for next month when I visit my fiancé!  I hope it was!

  • Megs2447

Did they say why the chit was denied? I assume your fiancé is still in phase I, right? I'm glad you still had fun! That's all that matters
  • Anti M

Crush, I am glad you had a nice visit, sorry about the chit.  Sounds like they're being strict for now.  It really can vary a lot by school, and by the current command atmosphere.  Will you be able to visit when he is in phase three?

And I worry if Bronco got DEERS figured out, and if madi's package was picked up.   Seriously, I wonder at random if internet strangers are happy.

  • Bronco14

Haha aw Anti M thasks for worrying about my! We got it figured out. Mostly. The Facebook link you provided helped! My husband was able to update his page 2 and provide all the necessary information to PSD. But when my husband asked about getting time off to take me to the DEERS office to get an ID and become enrolled under him (instead of my dad) he was told not to worry about it since I am already a dependent and enrolled under my father. Pretty much that we would have to do it one our own time... which may not be until after my husband is done with FMTB.
  • Anti M

But as your father's dependent, the BAH is not there.  I know it is hard for new sailors to stand up to instructors, but he needs to do so.  Being your dad's dependent is going to make Tricare a living hell if there is a billing problem.  Keep squeaking until it gets done.  There should be someone you can complain to officially without getting his ass in a sling.  If it were a Navy command, I;d say command masterchief... the Marines have something similar.  Find out,  Squeak loudly.

  • Bronco14

Well apparently the BAH problem is taken care of because his page 2 is updated and he sent my info in claiming we were married. But yes I am nervous about tricare and billing. Should I reach out to the PSD Facebook page again? I'll tell him he needs to say something again. I wish he hadn't memotioned I was already a dependent. I think he's feeling more comfortable there so maybe he will speak up.
  • Anti M

I sent you a PM, two sponsors is actually fraud.  Don't be scared, try PSD, and I sent a suggestion privately.

I am so mad I want to call his school and tell them what I think of them messing with one of our sailors.  But of course, I won't.  But I want to.

  • Bronco14

Thank you Anti M. Trust me, when I go on base to see my husband I feel like marching into the quarterdeck and finding someone to yell at... lol

  • Anti M

That's why I sent a PM, so you can go yell at the proper person.  Do it, it can be remarkably effective when you get the right one.

  • Anti M

Also, for other readers: never underestimate the power of a special request chit.  Make them say no in writing.

  • Kelsie

Okay so I also have a question about getting my id, my husband is in Pensacola and I'm in CO. How do I go about getting my id? Do we need to go together or is that something we can figure out separately? Before he left his recruiter said I would just need to go to one of the bases here but I'm sure there's a little more to it than that.
  • Anti M

Your husband can send you a signed form DD 1172.  You take that, plus driver license or state ID, and your SSN to the local base and they can make a card.  You can call the office and find out exactly what they want, as some get sticky about which ID they accept.  The procedure should be just like during boot camp.

  • Bronco14

Anti M, could I get my husband to sign a DD 1172 and go into the DEERS/ID card office here by myself?

  • Allison

AntiM and Bronco14, I'm doing the same thing right now. Can it be a coast Guard or Army Reserves base? That's all I have nearby.
  • Bronco14

Yes Allison it can be any branch base :)

  • Anti M

Bronco, hell, why didn't I think of that?  Try it!

  • garden gal

FYI, When my son was in boot camp my DIL needed to see a doctor before she got the DD1172 in the mail. Desperate to get her ID/Tricare she phoned 5he nearest base which turned out to be an Air Force reserve base. They were able to look up in the DEERS system and see that she had been entered. She showed up with her drivers license and marriage certificate and had her ID in less than 20 minutes. They didn't even want to see the POA she took along.
So maybe you could call atound to neaby places and just ask if it is possible. I'm sure every base is different.
The DD1172 showed up in the mail 3 days later, but she had been able to go to the doctor right away.
  • Anti M

Air Force bases are known to be much nicer and more helpful than anything the Marines do.

Seymour Johnson AFB is closest, call and see what they will do?

  • Bronco14

Haha okay!! Can I pick that up in the deers office?
  • Anti M

Yes.  Well, should be a yes.

  • Jackie

My husband is stationed states away right now and when he was here last we forgot to establish power of attorney. Does anyone know how to go about that I have no clue where to go or where to start and in order to get our stuff moved I'll need it
  • Anti M

He has to have the POA drawn up, get it signed, notarized and send it to you.  As long as he is not in boot camp, he should be able to get it done.  He can go to Legal on base, and they can assist him getting one done.  You cannot do it for him.

  • Megs2447

Once my fiancé and I are married and in phase 2 will he need another sailor for a Liberty buddy or can I be it??
