  • thinNavyblueline

@Navygirlfriend1 There are phases that sailors go through at Goose Creek. Check this out:

  • Anti M

Megs, married sailors do not need liberty buddies once they have been granted Live Ashore.

  • Anti M

For general information, the word "restriction" in the Navy implies formal punishment and no access to phones, etc.   While the constraints of the liberty rules may feel punishing, it is better not to use "restriction" as that is easily misunderstood.

  • Megs2447

Anti M, I don't think he will be granted live ashore. He's going in as an EM so his school isn't long enough to be granted that.
  • Anti M

EM is pretty long so he should at least ask.  I looked, married sailors can have their spouse be their liberty buddy.  I hope that helps!

  • Anti M

Major surgery today, so wish me luck.  Hospital has wifi, so maybe I can check in tomorrow.

  • Megs2447

Oh Anti M that helps so much thank you!! And I'll be sending prayers your way today!
  • thinNavyblueline

I hope all goes well with your surgery, will keep you in my prayers!

My husband is in A school in phase 1 currently and he got classed up after being there only a week but now he thinks he's going to get in trouble because he has something he needed to do but they only allow them to do it during the days/times he has class. He's afraid he's not going to be able to phase up until his class is over because he won't be able to get that done (no idea what it is, I try not to ask specifics because I don't know what he's allowed to tell me). Has anyone else had something like this happen? Did your husband/bf/son get in trouble? Anything helps!
  • abuon18

Kelsie, any time my husband has had to take care of something during class time he had just asked his instructor. Usually there are times where the class is going to get out early anyway (like on test days) or when there is planned study time but no instruction that he'll be able to take care of what he needs to. He just needs to communicate with his instructors and chain of command. Unless they are just jerks, they understand and will work with the guys to come to some solution that will allow your husband to get what he needs taken care of and not put him behind in his class. They know what is required of the Sailors as far as phasing up and completing other paperwork so as long as youryour husband is open in letting his instructors know what he needs they will work with him.

If my husband and I get power of attorney established and have it notarized will it be recognized or does it have to be done through the legal department on base?
  • Michael

Jackie. Yes as long as it's a power of attorney and its notorized you are fine. I have two. One from the military web site and I have one through the state of Wisconsin
  • Jackie

I just want to make sure household goods will recognize one even if it's not from the navy legal department
  • Anti M

Thanks for the well wishes everyone.  I am home, feel kinda crappy, but improving.

I hope everyone is having a good weekend.

Hi. It's been a while since I was last on sight. 3 weeks till married son ships out to bootcamp and then to groton ct. Trying to understand a bit further, what son and daughter-n-law can expect as far as her getting to ct to accompany hubby. My understanding is bc, then to ct for indoc and tgen BESS basic sub schooling, then just prior to graduating from BESS, will get orders for Which job, thus which A school. Then qualufy for accompany orders for wide to join him.
Has anyone recently gone thru the process, who can share some details. Anything they need to do before he leaves for bootcamp to assure best transition? Anyone's spouse move up sooner, see hubby at his, availability during his first wks at school, prior to his being completely qualified for navy housing, navy move? Does wife have to be on this end when navy moves belongings up to ct, or can i, his mom be here for shipping household goods? Any recommendations greatly appreciated on any of this! Thanks!!!!
  • Anti M

The seat time for his A school needs to be over 20 weeks for her to have a paid move to Groton.  Once he gets there, he puts in a Live Ashore packet to start the process, which takes a few weeks.  Nothing done before or during boot camp can speed this up.  She may want a general POA in order to handle somethings which may require his signature, but as far as A school, it happens when it happens.  It is possible his school will not be long enough.  If he is on hold waiting for school, that time does not count.

You can handle the HHG shipment with a POA.  It is done all the time.

  • Anti M

Also, if his school is not long enough, and she decides to move to Groton anyway, they do not have to let him move out of the barracks.  He'll still have a nightly curfew, and only during phase three will he be able to spend the night offbase on weekends.  This is very much a hurry up and wait situation, unfortunately.

  • Texasmom

    AntiM, thank yu!!!
  • Pobs

Texasmon, my husband was able to come help me move once he graduated from bess. They made him wait until a month into bess before they would talk about housing for us and moving me and our kids out to Groton. his instructors got him in touch with the right people to arrange housing and such. We did a dity move so I'm not sure who has to be there for the movers if the navy moves them. Also, if your son has any reservations about submarines I'd tell him to switch when he's in boot camp. Fast attack subs are out to sea a lot! And their duty rotation is every 4 days. My husband loves his rate, sonar tech, but we are completely over the fast attack schedule. He works so much. He wouldn't mind a boomer's schedule but you don't get to talk to a detailed and pick from available billets coming right out of a school. But, living in Groton while he was in A school was awesome! We loved going to the beaches in Rhode Island and traveling to New York by train and driving to providence and Boston. :)
  • Texasmom

Pobs, thanks so much for yur comments. Can yu elaborate on resv re subs, switch in bootcamp. How wud that be possible, and is it possible? I hear yur concern bout the schedule, etc. I do have some reservations bout subs for him, but...are yu saying they can change rates all together, or is there certain area of subs, st to get into?
  • Pobs

I don't think they have any say in which kind of sub they go to. I just know that since submarines are voluntary they can change to a ship instead while they are in boot camp. It would be a whole new rate and they might get stuck with something they really don't want to do. But if he definitely wants to be on a submarine then that's cool. My husband loves his rate and submarines. Him being gone all the time and rarely having a day off is just wearing on him.
  • Texasmom

Pobs. Thanks. I know when enlisting recruiters, and those at meps don't always have all info on all rates, or aren't always most detailed persons to get accurate details from. So my son has been under impression that su s out to sea less than ships etc. But I'm hearing yur experience. So yur husbands on fast attack? Boomer schedule better? But i heard yu say they don't choose out of A school. Interesting. My son's in secf program, so won't know rate till in bess, or a school. Do yu know if all those rates experience similar schedule? Ae, at, st? Did yur husband start in secf program?
  • Anti M

My nephew is a nuke, he was on a fast attack.  They were out to sea as much as any ship, long deployments, sea trials, exercises, short underways.  He missed the birth of his son, as did five other sailors on his sub.  They made the news with that homecoming! So I can't say a lot about SECF, because he had a completely different training experience.

Fast attacks get port calls, more mail, and some rare phone calls.  Boomers are bigger, rarely get mail drops when transferring personnel, and few port calls.  Fast attacks are out more often, but that also means they are at their homeport more often. One crew.  Boomers run silent and deep, and have two crews, so they swap off half the year (roughly, it varies, of course).  Research blue and gold crews.

  • Pobs

Boomers are 3 month on, 3 months off with rotating crews on the same sub. So on crew will go out for 3 months while the other crew is home. I think one of the biggest differences for fast attack subs vs. a ship is how big the crews are. Since there arent as many guys on the sub they have duty a lot more frequently. Which means working a lot of weekends. While in port different rates have different hours during the day. Some rates leave earlier than others depending on what needs to be done for the day and what kind of trainers they have. And then of course your work day hours can be different based on who's in command. But every rate has the same 4 day duty rotation, sometimes 3 day. My husband was in the secf program. He was happy that he got the rate he wanted, sonar. He said it's the best, radio is the second best. Nav et is the worst and ft is whatever. Ha.
  • Texasmom

AntiM, and pobs, can't think yu enough for sharing yur experiences. Soo helpful!!!
  • Pobs

No problem! There's definitely a lot of pride that goes with submarines. My husband says he would probably still choose it again and he will most likely miss it when he gets out, but it's something that they really want to do and not just be something they are on the fence about. submariners work so so much.
  • Bronco14

BAH is housing allowance for you and your husband to pay living expenses with. It will get deposited into your husband's paycheck. BAH amount depends on the area, and I've found the BAH calculator at http://www.defensetravel.dod.mil/site/bahCalc.cfm very helpful! You guys will get backpay from the date you get married, but it may take a few weeks for BAH to show up in his pay. Just make sure you get his page 2 updated as soon as you can to help speed along the process. Congrats on your marriage!

  • Bronco14

    You are so welcome!!

Hello!  My fiancé wanted me to ask all of you a question about his insurance.  He never got an insurance card, and he is in desperate need of contacts.  The wait to get in at the eye doctor on base is over a month, and so he wants to go off base for the contacts and eye doctor.  How does his insurance work off base?  Does he need an insurance card?  Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

  • Anti M

His ID card is his insurance card.  He has to have permission from his PCM/the base clinic to see an off base doctor, so he needs to ask about that.  Tricare might cover the exam, but does not pay for contacts (or glasses).   He should look at someplace such as America's Best, a free exam place, because many civilian eye docs do not take Tricare.  It is what we do as retirees on Tricare.  No referral needed, as far as I know, but again, he needs to ask because the rules for active duty can be strict.

  • Megs2447

    Thank you Anti M!

  • Allison

I am kind of confused about Liberty and civilian clothes at Great Lakes. During phase 2, will my husband be allowed to wear his civilian clothes when he goes out for his regular liberty on the weekend? I ask because he's about to phase up, and I want to send him something new to wear out on his birthday besides his uniform. It seemed like anyone leaving the base has to put on their NSU though.
  • Bronco14

Sailors are able to wear civilian clothes off base during phase 2 liberty. And when my husband was at Great Lakes he was able to wear civilian clothes during his phase 2 liberty. Hope that helps!

  • Allison

    Thank you, Bronco14!
  • Anti M

Make sure his size hadn't changed during boot camp! It happens.
  • Allison

Haha it already did. I got his pants one size up, but his tops are still the same since he's so tall, he's always had to have slightly bigger tops, so now he can finally fill them out a bit.
  • Wildcat_girl

Does anyone know how difficult it is to change a passport name? I.e. My Maiden name to married name?

    Thanks!
  • Anti M

It is not difficult, although it takes a little time.  I haven't done it in a long while, so you need to check the State Department for the newest rules.

  • autibug

I just changed mine a couple of months ago. If your passport is less than a year old it will not cost you anything. If it is more than a year old it will cost you $110. I just filled out the application online and sent in my old passport, a check, the application, and my marriage certificate. I had my new passport back in less than 2 weeks from when I sent it in. I made sure to put a tracking number on what I sent. I received my old passport and marriage certificate a few days after getting my new passport. If you have any questions let me know.

  • Michael

My marriage certificate does not have my married name on it just my maiden name and my husbands name. Do you have to have it changed and show your married name on it
  • EngagedToANavySailor

Hi I have a question for you guys...OK so my fiancé is in a school and I wanted to know how his phase liberty go like do he phase up in a week or 2 weeks like how long does it take to phase up... Thanks
  • autibug

Michael my marriage certificate only had my maiden name on it also. When you fill out the application they will ask for the name that is on you SS card so you will just put the same name that is on there.

  • Michael

Well I know most sailors don't get phase two until 4-6 weeks after being in school. My husbands school is 5 weeks and will stay in phase 1 the whole time :(
  • EngagedToANavySailor

Oh wow:( what's your husband job if you don't mind me asking
  • EngagedToANavySailor

My fiancé graduated the same day but he had to stay In GL for a week he just went to a school 4 days ago
  • EngagedToANavySailor

Do anybody know if CS has c school too or just a school
  • Dezairay

My boyfriend is completely done his school in Pensacola June 14th and I was wondering does anyone know an estimation of how long after that graduation he gets to come home? And I heard it will probably be about two weeks he gets to stay.
  • Allison

If my husband had to have surgery, does anyone know how I can get an update? He went in this morning for a simple shoulder surgery, but nobody has heard from my husband since. I'm just worried about him being alone and in pain on his birthday. I tried calling the va several times today with no answer and no voicemail options.
