Wildcat girl. I will be in Norfolk too. Husband will be on his ship. Not moving by until July August to meet up with him
  • Anti M

I deleted the original, but putting the answer part back in here.

    >

Anyway, the Navy MIGHT pay to move you out to the A school, that depends on whether his orders authorized a dependent move, and if it has not been too long since he reported.  I don't know the cut off, he will need to ask Personnel, not his chain of command.  Instructors often get such details wrong.

If you are moved to A school, you will still be eligible for a move to his new duty station.  It is not one or the other.  As long as his orders authorize "with dependents", you get a paid move.

  • Anti M

I'm pretty good with the security stuff because I had a TS clearance, worked on crypto in secure spaces, and handled classified material.  Part of that training was anti-espionage training, thinking the way a spy would think.  These days it would be how terrorists think.

Actually, going to an A school is not particularly secret, there are only so many Navy schools in certain locations.  When it gets sticky is talking about WHAT they are studying.  And when they get orders, you can say that too, because commands and units are attached to larger known bases.  You just can't talk about what they do there, or when they deploy from there.

  • Anti M

The Navy actually has a command to handle OPSEC:

  • Wildcat_girl

@michael, I am not 100% when I will be moving but hopefully sooner then later!

  • abuon18

USNwifeIL - there is a lot to learn in that regard. Luckily there are some really great resources out there to help!

Wildcat_girl - I live in the Hampton Roads for area, and have for about 2 years now. Happy to answer any questions you have!
  • Allison

Good morning :). I've been really busy with the move out to Great Lakes, but I appreciate everyone who answered me on the piano. I didn't realize I realistically had so many options, so I'm really glad I asked you guys.

I have another question for you now, and I feel silly asking it, but what do you do with your extra recycling in housing at GL, or who would I ask about that? Where I grew up, we were allowed to leave extra bags next to the recycle, and when I lived on my own, it was an apartment building with multiple recycle bins already, but on my recycle bin here it tells me to put all items in the bin and do not bag. I'd just like to get rid of some oversized boxes we don't really need anymore, but even after breaking them down, they still take up tons of space in the recycle bin, so I'm getting behind and have a box graveyard in my garage right now haha.
  • abuon18

Allison - call your housing management company. With people moving in & out all the time I'm sure they have some procedures for this. Otherwise I have always had success posting them on FB military spouse pages if they're in good condition because as people are always moving they're also looking for free boxes!
  • Allison

Thank you abuon18! They're big boxes from when we got some new furniture that had to be assembled. I'm sure some families could get good use out of them. I'll look for those pages.

Question! Sailor is being stationed in Mayport, FL after being in San Diego. We're wondering what the living situation was like as NS Mayport. Is he allowed to live off base? We are not married. Thanks!

  • Anti M

It all depends on his paygrade.

If he is an E-4 or below, he will likely be required to live in the barracks.  He can get on the list to move out if the barracks fills up, but others will be in front of him. He can stay offbase and pay out of pocket, but that can get expensive, and you, as the civilian, would be stuck with the lease if it has to be broken.  Some get roommates and rent a house out of pocket.

If he is an E-5, he will receive BAH at the single rate and you may live with him.

  • Megs2447

Hello everyone! I wanted to give an update to some of you on the status of my fiancé (now husband) who got unaccompanied orders to Yokosuka. He hadn't even graduated from BECC when he got them-yay surprises! 3 days after his orders were given we got married. That Monday, I was on his page 2. We spoke with the CPCs office who contacted the detailed. After that it became a waiting game. My husband graduated honor grad, giving him e3 status and a bump up for e4. After speaking with multiple people at Great Lakes who work with this daily, I was assured that yes, I CAN go to Japan, even though my sailor is e3. It might take a few months, but I could still live on base and get BAH. However, as of 1400 today, my sailor's orders to Japan were cancelled. The detailer gave no reasoning, but we no longer have to worry about all the crazy scenarios, command sponsorship, or the financial issues this would cause us. We don't know where his new orders will take us, but we do know that we will (more than likely) be able to go together. (Please refrain from telling me he could go GeoBachelor to Bahrian. I'm aware of this and don't need reminding. Thanks!)
To all the fiancé's who find themselves in this position: DO NOT feel hopeless. There are a lot of people who are so willing to listen to you and help you in any way they can. Have faith that it will be ok. We were lucky. Very lucky. The CPC said this is rare, but it can and does happen.
  • Michael

Megs2447. I am so happy it all worked out. You are lucky it worked out very lucky. Something very simalar happened to my husband shipmate as we are now in Norfolk. We have been here for 3 days and he was on the same ship as my husband. But yesterday he was told he was being taken off the same ship as my spouse and flown over seas to meet up with a new ship and will be gone 5-7 months as this ship had been gone a little bit. He feels it's only payback since he did not get sent to Japan also
  • Anti M

Orders get cancelled all the time, which is why verbal or soft orders cannot be relied on 100%.

I am glad it is working out for you.

LOL, of course I won't say anything about Bahrain.  What would you like to know about Diego Garcia?

  • Megs2447

Well, as it turns out, these were hard orders. But, it no longer matters! HAHAHA I have heard of Diego Garcia, Anti M, and hopefully that's not on the radar either!
  • Wildcat_girl

I know I have seen this before but I can't remember where. I am in search of wedding bands that are a rubber material for my husband. Any help or guidance would be great, thanks!
  • gatorgirl

The brand I gave my husband is Qalo. He loves it!
  • Megs2447

We are going to Norfolk.  I cannot be happier, as many of his friends from GL are there already, and a few of my friends live there.

  • Megs2447

Ok, reading these orders is challenging...so much info that doesn't pertain to me.  Where can I find out if the Navy will ship our HHGs???

  • Michael

Congrats Megs2447 we are there too. We just got housing took 3 months but we got what we wanted and waited. Go your before you have your husband sign. We did that. Found out some places that are right next to base take just as long to get to base as the place we got at fort story as traffic is horrible in some places. I love Virginia beach area so did our 3 year old with the beach her first time there and loved the ocean. A good help also is a Facebook page Virginia navy parents and loved ones. Super group helped me out a lot being the spouse and been so very supportive. Very tight navy family in Norfolk oh last thing the Nex is freaking huge two stories and you will get lost I did lol. Good luck ever need anything help or a ear. Can never have enough friends I am new here too
  • Anti M

Megs, it has been a long time since I looked at hard copy orders.  Can you find the orders number?  If you have that, you can call the personal property office and get things rolling.  Call the one for the base he is at, not the one he is reporting to.

  • gatorgirl

This may be a dumb question but when our son and I are moved to my husband's area, will the Navy pay to ship my car? And will we have to pay for our plane ticket to the new area? This will be our first move. I'm sure we will be told all this information soon but I was just curious. Thanks!

  • Kelsie

What's the process and what are the requirements for getting a VA loan? How long do you have to be active duty before you qualify?
  • Anti M

Gatorgirl, the Navy does not pay to ship cars in the US.  Either you drive it there, or you pay to have it shipped.  If you drive, they pay for gas and per diem.  He can arrange for your tickets through the military travel office, they are paid for by the Navy.  Do not buy your own tickets, they get discounts we do not see, and you will not be reimbursed.

  • Anti M

Kelsie,  only 90 days is needed to use a VA loan.

    http://www.benefits.va.gov/homeloans/purchaseco_eligibility.asp

Basically, you go to a lender who takes VA, they run the credit checks and see if you qualify.  There are restrictions on the houses, it has to be your primary residence.

  • gatorgirl

Anti M, if my son and I travel by plane but we have my husband's dad to drive the car across the country will the Navy pay for the plane tickets and pay us per diem and gas for the car? I am just trying my best not to drive with our baby in the car for that long.

  • Michael

Gatorgirl I know this one as we just did it. My husband just left for Norfolk last week. This is what the base told us plane tickets and driving are only for dependants that's it no one else. If my husband is flying and we are not because we are driving we are good. But if we fly with my husband and you have someone take your car you are on your own. I was there when they told my husband that. So I am driving with our daughter and that was they will pay for the move of our car because we are driving and not flying. I have to keep every receipt when I drive and prove its me that stayed in hotels as I use my military is to check in and such. If they find out there is fraud it will come down on your husband big time this is what was told to us together. They do not pay for mileage on the car just the move such as gas a hotel that you stay over in because it's so far to drive and meals. My husband will be re-embersed in his paycheck at a later date once they have everything. They will not give dependants airline tickets if they are driving if they find out they will take the cost of the ticket out of your husbands pay its one or the other not both. If you were moving overseas the navy would pay for your vehicle to be moved but since you are not they will
Not pay for it. Also keep keep in mind if your stuff weights more then 8000 pounds it's $100 a pound after the 8000 that you will have to pay before you get your stuff. Make your appointment asap as summer is busy season and you may have to wait. We booked ours last week and pick up is end of July drop off is beginning of August so be ready.
  • Michael

Ps gatorgirl if no dependants or sponsor is driving the car the navy won't pay for anything to move the car. That is what we were told. There has to be a attachment to the car mening the dependants are driving it there. The gas is on your own and once again your don't get mileage.
  • gatorgirl

Ok awesome. Thanks for all the insight! Looks like we will be driving then!

  • Paige

Hey, do any of you guys know what the DESIGNATION/NEC/MOS/AFSC & INSTALLATION OF SPONSER'S CURRENT ASSIGNMENT, means on the EFMP forms.? Thanks!
  • Anti M

NEC is Navy Enlisted Code.  If your husband went to C school, he was given a code for his specialty (also, nuke, etc).  These are listed in his service record and on his evals.  He should know it, and he can have more than one.  (MOS is Army, AFSC is Air Force).

    Installation is his command.

If he has a critical NEC, they will want to put him where it can best be used within the EFMP parameters.

  • Anti M

Sorry Navy Enlisted Classification.  typing too fast.

  • sourpatchkid

My husband will be graduating A school next month, and we will be doing our first PCS. I am trying to find out as much as I can about everything--we actually already have a house under contract and I have already gone to the area once for an interview. I learned that I will have to fly back to the location to sign the paperwork to close on the house, and I came upon something for civilians/spouses called a "House Hunting Trip," where I may be able to be reimbursed for the cost of going up there. I have absolutely no idea, and I have never heard of this before. I found this link about it:
    http://www.gsa.gov/portal/ext/public/site/FTR/file/Chapter302p005.h...
but have no idea what it means. I'm willing to pay out of pocket, of course, if I have to, but if there's even the chance I could get reimbursed, I wanted to look into it. Thanks!

  • Michael

First time I have seen that one. Never heard of it maybe Anti M
  • Anti M

I have never heard of the military applying the GSA rules, the GS employees are civilians.  What us more usual is for the command to grant house hunting leave.  Be sure he asks about it before he checks out.

  • Paige

Hi, do you any you guys know about any websites or any other resources I can go to regarding moving to PCS & options we will have? Also, is their a way I can put my furniture in storage for the Navy to come move our things from there? All information would be great! Thank you!
  • Anti M

The official site is move.mil.  I have heard mixed reviews.  You should call the PPO (personal property office) and ask to talk to a PCS counselor.  You can also contact Fleet and Family Services, and they can give you specific numbers to call.  You can do this even if you aren't on or near a base.

If you have a Navy packout, they will provide up to three months free storage before delivery.  Yes, you can pack out from a storage unit, but someone with a POA must be there to sign for the shipment, someone you trust.  This is "packed by owner" so affects the damage insurance, be 100% certain you must do it that way.

This one is from WA, but still good:

  • Anti M

There is a PCS group here, but it is not very active, and you're pretty much going to get the same people replying.

  • Allison

AntiM, you should really write a book or a very organized blog. Sometimes you have great answers to questions I haven't had to ask yet, and I worry by the time I get to that point, it'll be impossible to find your comment again on here. I feel like I should be taking notes. Just here to say you're awesome :).

hi my husband and i are getting married and he is gonna be station in port hueneme california he's moving from gulfport now.. we wanted to get a small apartment for good price. can anyone give me an idea of some good neighborhoods to look into?
  • Paige

Hi, i've been enrolled & approved to be in the EFMP for Category 2.! My husband is suppose to get his orders changed, but Navy is telling him that either their going to take me off his orders or their going to send us anywhere that has an available spot for us. It seems as if their not accommodating to my health needs even though I'm in the program. Do any of you know about why that would happen? Also can my husband request me off his orders? & can he legally abandon me by not providing any of his money to me while were married? Thank you

  • Anti M

Category 2 doesn't have many limitations.  But yes, they can send him to a new duty station and not you, others here have posted about that.  As for "anywhere that has a spot available", that is pretty much the way it works.  He doesn't get a preference if there are not a lot of billets to fill.  You may be in the program, but your needs will never trump the needs of the Navy.

Off his orders?  Do you mean request unaccompanied orders instead of accompanied?  He certainly can ask, especially if he is going overseas.

As long as you are married to him, he is obligated to send all BAH and FSA to you, plus half his base pay.  The Navy will come down on him hard if he does not support you financially.

  • Paige

He was told they weren't change his orders, their determined to keep him at a location I can't go to, so will that mean my husband & I will be separated for 4 years of his contract or can he request a move as soon as a spot becomes availible.?
  • Anti M

His orders should not be for more than three years, and yes, he can request a hardship transfer.  Orders and his contract are two different things.

  • Paige

Thank you for the information! @Anti M

Are utilities included in on base housing?
  • Anti M

Yes, except for cable.  Lincoln Housing also covers renter's insurance.

  • Allison

Yes. With the housing we live in Great Lakes though, I think it's the top 5% of users pay extra on utilities. It's easy to avoid if you pay attention to things like turning lights off, opening windows at night instead of running ac, running the dishwasher at night, etc. They're also really helpful and can provide resources to help you be conscious of and cut back on energy, water, and gas consumption.
  • Allison

Oh but like Anti M said, cable is not included. Internet is also not included. Both can be hooked up easily though. It is not added to your bill though as a service, maybe it's just here, but you pay for those extras separately, which could be frustrating as you do not receive left over bah, so you could end up paying more than at an apartment depending which housing option you choose. It doesn't really matter to us because my husband and I don't really watch tv, but for example, we lose about $200 a month because our rent is less than how much bah we get. Again, it doesn't really bother us though because we don't use a lot of those extras, we love our house and community, and the fact that the navy is helping us at all is worth it.

In our housing, we could also hook up either an electric or gas dryer (in case you were wondering if yours would be compatible). It did have a dishwasher, gas stove, and fridge/freezer, but we had to purchase our own washer and dryer, which might be something to consider if you don't have those appliances already, were planning on getting rid of them, and/or are looking at apartments that already have laundry facilities.

I know this went a little beyond your question about utilities, but I'm assuming you're going through to live in base housing or not to live in base housing battle, and these might be some other things to consider, or maybe you already did, but I'll leave it here for someone else then haha. Personally, I think the base housing is worth it, and it's really nice to be surrounded by people who are living this same military lifestyle. They can provide the biggest help, the best advice, and the strongest support.
