Machinist Mates

  • Kaye S.

Hi ya'll ! My son is a "Nuke" and a MM3 on the submarine USS ALABAMA in Bangor, WA. He's been there since April 1. Lovely place, but nothing like Texas (our home)! He likes his work, but my goodness he gets FILTHY (that oil gets everywhere).

Oh, and may I sweetly and politely say that our sailors are "Machinist's" Mates (not spelled with an 'E')? Does anyone else have someone in Puget Sound? Gimme a shout... Hugs! Kaye
  • Pat

Nuke MM...boot camp and then on to GC for Nuke school. No standard MM school @GL for Nukes.
MM's move across the street after BC and take MM school @ GL. This is the only site for MM sailors that are not Nukes.

Hi everyone! It is great to have a web site like this, I wish I would have found it three years ago when my son enlisted. I am very proud of him and the Navy. He is on the USS Wasp and an MM3. Thanks to all military personnal.
  • Jeff'smom

Jeff has been in 3 years also, he has 3 more to go, he signed up for 6. I am waiting for the day they com home for sure. But am very proud of him so far.
  • Jeff'smom

Hello Everyone, is there anyone in the Pasadena, Texas area that would like to get together, to talk about our children in the Navy. I think that would be interesting? You can email at debs11822@yahoo.com if you just want to do the email thing? Debbie
  • Jeff'smom

The wait will be worth it NancyM. Write when you can. He will enjoy it when he gets so much. I am so gald my son and I can talk everyday now. It's great.
  • Jeff'smom

ladyK09 Congrats to you and your daughter. Keep us up dated on the great job she does. Best wishes.
  • Lorraine:Proud Mom a Nuke MM ELT

Hi all, just wanted to introduce myself. My son left BC for A school in Goose Creek (nuke school) last Tues. He will be beginning classes on Monday for MM. I'm sure to be on here asking lots of questions :o)
  • Lorraine:Proud Mom a Nuke MM ELT

Thanks, Julie (Adam's Mom). Now I know what my son will be learning. :o)

Hello Dawna, I have a hard time with my son in VA now for 3 1/2 years. Hope you fly over and see her better than I can. I have a 5 year old granddaughter who is a big problem for me. I have only been able to see my son every 6 months or so. It's hard but you can do it too. I am proud of him but miss him very much. Good luck Dawna.....You can do it. Congrats to Heather too.. Debbie

  • Kris, Stevens mom

hello, my son graduated 09/25 from great lakes and is headed to goose creek on wednesday i believe, i have a few general questions first...will he start school right away or will he have a short wait? when will he know his actual address?
  • carols_kitchen

    Lauren
What is GSE/GSM. Maybe then I could check around and see what I have heard of in over the past year.
  • carols_kitchen

Shari--Yes, a month wait is not at all unusual. It can be 2-3 months until they have the class size they want to start a new rotation.
  • carols_kitchen

Hi Cathy! My sailor loves prototype over regular classes. Give him a job and food, and he's on it! Glad to have you with us.
  • Trina (Spencer's Mom)

Hello all. I am new to this group. My son is a MM stationed in Norfolk on the USS Enterprise.
  • wisconsinmom

Hi, just joined this group. My son started class in Pensacola last week for Aviation Machinist Mate - AD. Wow I didn't know there were so many different machinist mates.
  • carols_kitchen

NY Navy Wife--my son is an MM in prototype, and right now he doesn't get to see his wife much. They work rotating 12-15 hr shifts. Plus, the first 15 days, they do not get any breaks or days off. He did have a great commander who did give them some early afternoons off on Fridays after that first string of days. He ordered "mandatory fun" Fridays, and after they cleaned up they went back for things like picnics.
  • luxibabi

Anyone have info on Pine harbour aprartments?
  • carols_kitchen

Power School graduation is outdoors--I think I have pix of it on my page. I was wearing a cast, so wore only blouse that would go over it plus a nice pair of slacks. our DIL wore a sweat sun dress (summer grad of course.)
Our sailor signed up for subs in 2008--and just made it to Groton to start welding school. We are so happy for him, but know he will miss his wife for a few months.
  • carols_kitchen

Casey--he took welding and precision machining in high school and college. Maybe that is how he got selected for that--it's not the kind of infomation he thinks to tell his mom--lol!

My son and I have been discussing the different types of subs and what would be best for him to try to get stationed on. He's leaning toward SSBN because he's been told they have predictable deployment, 3 months out- 3 months on land, and that he'll see more foreign ports. Can anyone give us some advice on this topic? Thanks!
  • janis USS DUBUQUE

Hi all, my son, Joe is still in BC, Ship 6 Div 929 in as a MM. His PIR date is June 4th. Anybody else?
  • always waiting

MMWife85-- My husband is an MM3, too! :) He's only gone on a short underway, though.
  • always waiting

How long has he been gone? The first week is always the hardest for me, no matter how long he is gone for. I'm glad he loves his job, mine really doesn't. He wanted to be a pilot, but his grades in high school and his vision prevented that.

What ship is your husband on?
  • always waiting

    Oh, I'm sorry. :(

I'm proud of my sailor too, its just hard when he doesn't love his job.

He's on the USS George H W Bush, and they won't be deploying until next year, so we're getting eased into it. I'm not sure if that's good or bad, though.
  • always waiting

I live in Virginia Beach, too! Haha, wow I feel like a creeper. I don't have a job, so besides trying to keep everything clean and taking care of the kittens I'm on here a lot. I clean like every other day but somehow the kittens mess everything up.

I would love to meet up some time. I definitely need to meet more people down here :( I only know one girl.
  • always waiting

Aww, my kittens miss my husband too. The day he left they were sniffing all over his side of the bed. It was cute. They're brothers and are almost identical. :) They're tabby cats. What kind is yours?

What schools are you looking at? I'm accepted into Old Dominion and TCC, but I'm not sure where I want to go yet. That would be nice to be able to meet some more girls. :) My husband and I only went to the beach once, but I do love it as well. Mainly just walking in the sand. Haha.
  • Sash

hello everyone my name is Sasha, my fiancee is a MM. He just got based in Hawaii. Im new to this group and just wanted to say hello
  • ck, Jeff's mom

I am also new to this group, my son , Jeff is a MM on the USS Enterprise in Norfolk, VA. He has only been in VA since April , 2010. I live in Humble, TX, so far away!
    Ck, Jeff's Mom
  • Sam (AUX PAC - Groton, CT)

Hello, I'm new to this group and my fiance just started his BESS classes for an MM this morning!!! I miss him already. Excited for what's to come, and I'd LOVE all the info I can get - I feel like I'm in left field.

    :)
  • mn linda (nuke MM ELT Groton CT)

hi, my son is just starting A school to be an MM and I'm trying to learn as much about the job as possible. What is BESS?
  • kcase1-GROTON-- USS MIAMI

can anyone give me any information about submarine machinist mate? how long is there school will they be able to bring family? etc
  • Sash

ya A school and C school is still in groton.. if your married you can get housing i think. my sailor's friend got housing for his family but they had kids. and he also had to get stationed in groton. i was able to visit my sailor twice when he was there. the navy lodge is very cheap and nice
  • Denmacy

My husband is going to Groton, CT for A School. Can anyone verify this information for me?

•Groton, CT -- 4 weeks (Basic Enlisted Submarine School)
•Groton, CT --4 weeks (Sub MM A School)
  • Sash

if i can remember correctly im pretty sure thats how it goes
  • Sam (AUX PAC - Groton, CT)

My husband is in BESS for 8 weeks - almost done. Then BMS after.
  • Sam (AUX PAC - Groton, CT)

    I didn't think MMs had C school?
    Am I wrong?

Also - my sailor and I are married & have a baby (due in 2 weeks), but I don't think school is long enough for me to be able to live with him..

Is it likely he'll go straight to a sub after school? Or is it just always unpredictable?

    THANKS!
  • Sash

my sailor has a friend that went to groton with him. he was married with 2 kids. he worked something out that he would be stationed in groton if they wanted to move...i dont know if thats the case for everyone. usually they get leave after school and then go straight to their base.. my sailor was home for 18days.. where r u all thinking about getting stationed
  • Sam (AUX PAC - Groton, CT)

My sailor and I want King's Bay, GA like nobody's business!! :) haha

He had heard that they send a lot of the married sailors to Bangor, WA.
  • Sash

bangor WA or kings bay.. cuz they r both three month deployments i believe... where u guys from is it close to GA? my sailor got his third pick.. so hopefully u guys get the first
  • Sam (AUX PAC - Groton, CT)

    Yeah - we're from FL.
So it'd just be a few hours away from family. WA would seem verrryyyy very far! Especially because we'll have a newborn in about a week.

Wives can't live with sailors until after schooling, correct?
  • Sash

ya that would be close.. usually they try to work with married couples.. i know what u mean about far. i live in california and my sailor lives in hawaii!! he just keeps on getting farther and farther away. and i cant move with him until im done with college :(

no.. my sailor had 2 friends that wives moved in with them.. but they had a few kids.. u should tell ur sailor to ask his instructor.. i texted my sailor and asked but hes working right now so he'll get back to me later and ill let u know
  • Sam (AUX PAC - Groton, CT)

Yeah - hopefully they could work with us, but I won't get my hopes up! Wow - that is far, I'm sorry... I'm sure things will just get easier down the road for you 2.

Oh that's right - I think I asked you that, sorry.
    Thanks!
  • Sash

he said "the husband just needs to talk to his instructor. but it also depends. what his rate is. cuz my friend had some trouble doing that since our schooling is not long. but if he signs a contract saying he will stay in groton then they should"
hope that helps.. but ya just ask the instructor.. what are you having, a boy or girl? how exciting :)
  • Sam (AUX PAC - Groton, CT)

    Ok - cool. Thank you!
Yeah MM school is not long. He graduates from BESS in like a week and he'll start BMS soon (we're hoping he'll get the paternity leave between those 2 schoolings). He can choose that he wants to stay in Groton after school is all done?
    I'll have him ask :)
    We're having a boy! Can't wait
  • Sash

awww how exciting. a bay boy... well congrats
