hahhahahahha yes breathing is overrated at times!!!! When she gets close to graduating A school everyone gets their orders... My son got orders to the USS John paul jones, so he went to OPS for the systems that are on the JPJ. I think it lasted as long as A school did.and its the same location as A school
So my Sailor did grad with flying colors and is at the airport as I write this waiting to fly out this evening. Is it 4 to a room at Point Loma? Do they need to phase up? My brother wants to check him out on Mother's Day, but I don't think things move that quickly. Is anybody's sailor in A class right now? Just wondering when the current class grads.
Ok...I just joined because my son had to re-class from EOD due to an injury. Love this website and have been a member since he was in DEP. He just let us know he will start ATT at GL on Monday. Look forward to learning more about this new adventure! Everyone have a nice evening!
Thanks, abuon18. Wow, he called this morning and said he phased up already and is able to leave base for day liberty. He also said they won't class up for at least a couple weeks. He's happy he's not bunking so close to the ceiling and his room has a microwave and fridge; plus he said the chow is great. Point Loma looks like a beautiful place to be from the pic I found. And yes, youngestson, according to my sailor only 2 more ATT classes at GL.
It's gorgeous! The base is right on the bay across from the airport. It's close to the beaches too.... Bus stop right across from base will take them there!
I was there this last weekend with my sailor who's on board the USS JPJ.... Liberty Station is across the street THEY HAVE ICECREAM i was happy... hahha Liberty station is like a small mall with food ... it used to be RTC San Diego, my brother and my step dad went thru there for Navy Boot (I went to orlando) it looks sooooo different BUT AWESOME.... saw the STG school buildings... but didn't see any sailors :-( but I waved at who ever's kids are there now...hahhaha HOOYAH
Youngestson, it's my understanding that the second to the last ATT class started last week or so; it will run about 7 wks plus holidays and your sailor would probably be in the last class.
I went to a graduation at Point Loma. It was great. Not many parents come ( we were the only guests) and we were treated like VIPs It is a very short ceremony and photo op and then they have to report to holds and do paperwork unless they are reporting immediately. Message me if you have questions.
If anyone's son or daughter is graduating this coming Tues...from A school at Point Loma let me know...we are going down to see our grandson graduating...
I think I've asked this before, but more people are on here now. My daughter is going to A school in San Diego after bc, for a four year STG. I keep getting different answers for how long that is. I know there are holds and all, but other than that, is there a guesstimate?
hi sharla.... its ok ask away.... A school is technically 9 weeks plus a day or two. My son is also a 4yr, so he was on hold for maybe a month once he got to ASW (thats what they call A school location,) then after grad he waiting i think 2 months for OPS school to start, she will most likely go thru that .. its geared towards the systems she'll be working on once she gets her orders just before A school grad.. i think my son's OPS was 2 months .. but that will depend on her orders... Hope this helps.... any other ?? chime in...
ASW=Anti-Submarine Warfare. Good to know he'll get orders before A school grad. I'm really wanting to plan a trip for both my sailor home and me to visit.
Thank you so much Barbydahlzz!!! That was the best answer I've had yet! Her recruiter told me yesterday that after the 9 weeks of Aschool that's it, she will come home on leave for a couple of weeks and then go out on the fleet. So maybe she has no OPS school? I don't know. :) I sure hope I know something better once she's there. I'm just such a planner, all this gray area makes my blood flow backwards. LOL.
Sharla, hang in there!! I'm also a navy vet so I understand what my son had gone thru ... most likely OPS for her... even when I went thru A school after i got my orders and graduated off to what was FRAMP school... same thing as OPS STG stuff is changing every day and our kids will ALWAYS be in some sort of class for some thing... I too am a planner and having him try to get leave then be told NOT YET was frustrating but I understood... just keep this in mind HURRY UP AND WAIT ....hahaha in the year and a half my son has been in the navy, he's been home only once but i did go out and visit with him last month. his ship is perm moving next year to hawaii... well as of NOW thats the plan with the Navy you never know... so planning a trip to hawaii... just hang on... !!! its a fun ride!!!
"A" school graduation was very impressive..so glad we had the opportunity to see the school and stay on base...since no camera's or cell phones weren't allowed..the Navy took photo's of all the graduates...now the next school starts in Oct...really a long "hold" time...
It seems like A schools overlap. My son is about halfway through A school; but he started in ATT school (the electronics core for 6 yrs). Perhaps A schools are different for the 4 and 6 yr enlistees; his also looks like 8 wks. I'm wondering if the 4 yr sailors get an extra week for electronics.
Jillymom, the schools do overlap. They often have 2 or 3 A school classes going at the same time-staggered though. They start about 4 weeks apart. The A schools are also a mix of 4yr & 6yr-it's a combined class. They don't separate them until after A school graduation, when the 4 yrs go to a short ops school then their ship and the 6 yrs continue on to C school.
GMA, unfortunately that hold is due to the fiscal calendar. You'll notice they class up in Oct-the start of the fiscal year. The Sailors graduating C school are apparently on hold at the moment until October as well waiting for orders to their ship. At least that is what my husband was told by his chief, because he graduated C school in April and is waiting for his orders. They told him not to be surprised if he doesn't get them until Oct!
Hi! Our daughter heads for BC August 19 and then goes to San Diego for Sonar Technician training for 10 weeks. I just wanted to introduce myself and say Hi! Thank you for this site, Melissa!
Hi everyone! Started planning for PIR on 9/13 and would like to know if Sailors going to San Diego for A school fly out on Saturday or Sunday... anyone have any information?
Hi Barbiew, how exciting to start PIR plans! Yes, Sailors who fly straight to A school (who have a 4 yr contract) will fly out immediately, most likely Sat but some Sun depending on when they get flights. They won't know that info until days before. They will need to go to the airport Fri night/Sat morning (I don't remember which) (they all go in a bus together at the same time regardless of when their flight is), but you can go to the airport and get a gate pass to sit with your Sailor until she boards!
Hey there Barbiew...... My son left RTC March of 2012, went to the airport early saturday am, but didn't fly out til late afternoon sat, spent the whole day with him at O'Hare.. the gate ppl were so awesome to let the families go past TSA checkpoint with your sailor. oh abuon just said that hhahahah its an awesome ride... better hang on tight!!! HOOYAH
It was almost as emotional as seeing him leave for deployment on his ship this past monday. Could not believe how proud I felt of his determination and dedication.
My son left GL in early July after AAT and is now in SD but hasn't heard when A-School will start. Has anyone heard or have a child in San Diego waiting on school to start? Thanks!
My son is graduating BC on Aug 16th. I anticipate he will leave immediately for A school in San Diego. Since we live in northern Nevada I am very excited!
A school start times vary- They wait till they get enough students and then start- not on any schedule. same for C school. Holds can be frustrating. In SD, best TAD my son had was San Clemente. He really enjoyed that.
Ken's mom and Kelly Your sailors will probably be together- Lucky you to have each other!! message and become friends so you can share info. Wish I had someone in my sons group did the whole thing solo!
Yeah that is pretty cool! We are a Navy family. Husband was in during Vietnam. Our son-in-law is career Navy, sonar, and his 15th year. My cousin was a Pearl Harbor survivor.
Sorry you had to go solo Navymommo. Kelly, lets chat.
My son did tell me he met another guy going to STG. Most likely your son. We may even see you in the wee morning hours on the 17th when I am guessing they will leave.
Yes! Hopefully we will know more when he calls after Battlestations. I understand that if they don't have a class ready, they may stay a while at Great Lakes. We are flying home on Saturday, but I booked an afternoon flight just in case we can spend more time with him. I can't wait for that call.
I am staying until Monday afternoon, so I would love to have extra time with my son. Firefighting and confidence chamber this week. Can't wait to hear those stories! Lol.
We are in the final phases of building our vacation home in East Texas. Otherwise we'd stay longer. Thank goodness for non-stop flights from San Antonio to San Diego. Looking forward to earning those frequent flyer miles. :)
Once your sailors PIR... you get liberty that day, they head to the airport weee early hours in the am the next day, we went to the airport around 7am found my sailor in the USO SLEEPING (HAHAH) spent the day with him there, his flight was around 4ish. He waiting about 2 to 3 weeks to class up. They do not wait in chicago to class up.
Kelly W what would you like to know about STG A school??
