Hi I have so many questions but not sure what i can post and what i cant. so i will wisely word my questions. lol....Husband is heading to A school soon. Does anyone know when the families can move with. We have already been away from each other for around 5 months. Not as long for some. But would like to be closer soon. Since he has not been stationed anywhere for longer then 6 months we cant move with. He will be going to A school and C school in the same area so was wondering if anyone had any ideas. Or experiances with this situation. thanks (:
Hi Amber!
My husband had A & C school orders to Point Loma as well, here's the deal. Since the orders are written separately -a set of orders for A school then a set for C school, the Navy won't pay for you to move to be with him for A school. Once he gets his C school orders those are almost always longer than 6 months so they will move you. We paid to move me so I could be with him during A and C school because it made the most sense for us for many reasons. So you can either move yourself to be with him for A and C school (you'll get BAH for where ever you are living) or you can hang tight & they'll move you when he begins C school anyway! Feel free to PM me with any questions!
To get the pictures from the "A" School graduation...your son needs to get ahold of the CD and e-mail you the pictures and then you have to forward them on to Photo Lab or WalMart to have them developed...this is what my grandson told me over the weekend...so that is what I am going to do...(this is for Jillysmom)
Hi Sailormum and others: My daughter will graduate BC Oct. 18 and then head to Point Loma. I would like to follow the posts of those already there and those who will have recruits headed there to get a little comfortable with what she will experience.
hey all new moms with sailors coming to Point Loma..... What a PERFECT place to be for school!!!!! My son's time at STG school was awesome!!!! met lots of awesome people... loved the classes... his off time was spent at the beach with friends or the mall or disneyland etc.. he had his duty days too, Now he's stationed across the bay at 32nd street on the USS JPJ LOVES IT too.. My profile pic is of my son getting frocked to E4 with his new CO... happy dude.
Jeanette... how are you holding up with your daughter in boot?
Thank you Sailormum and Barbydahizz... etc. :) - I am glad to have the connections with you. We just moved to AZ from SoCal beginning of June so I am familiar with how lovely Point Loma is. Lucky location! I'm glad your son liked the classes Barbydahizz... Love the photo! Do you see him very often or are you far away? The inability to communicate with my daughter is what has been the greatest challenge, as it is for most. I write her everyday and have an email support group for her that I keep updated with news and encouragement to them to write. I have good days and bad days but trust in her decision which we are thrilled about and trust in the Navy. I am excited for what's ahead. Today is a difficult day because we missed her call on Sunday (just happened to go out of cell range when she called) and her vmail said she was out of calling card minutes. A post today on the PIR 10/18 site said that a mom heard from her daughter that the same ship/division might get to call again on Thursday. She has no way of knowing I reloaded her calling card and sent another, too. I can only hope and pray that she tries the card or buys one from the NEX if she is allowed to call before she receives my letter saying I reloaded it and the envelope with the second card (since I don't know if she might have thrown away the first card). II just have to hope and pray that missing talking with us doesn't set her back, but I realize this is only one of many times this might happen over the years. It's just a huge adjustment.Did either of you miss any calls?
My daughter arrived at Point Loma on Saturday (she's a 4yr STG), and got her permanent barracks yesterday. :) She's had a couple of days of indoc, and we thought she was starting A School (2 months long) next Monday, but evidently there were 3 spots picked randomly and she wasn't one of them. So now she's on hold. Anyone know how long those holds tend to be???
In the meantime, I suppose she will do whatever....she said they may use her in administration, she wasn't certain. But she's excited to get started and hey...if you have to be stuck somewhere, she's not suffering. :)
my son was on hold for 3 months for a school and another 2 before ops and another 2 before his first duty station. So.... tell her to get some interesting TAD and smile!
No way to tell how long holds will be. Can be days, weeks or months! They have to wait for enough students for a class.
TAD is temporary assigned duty- they get assigned to a ship or in Point Loma a lot of them go to San Clemente Island and train with the SEALs. They get extra money for doing that too
Jeanette- TAD is temporary assigned duty. My Sailor has spent his time painting, watches, working out at Coronado (that was cool) and whatever else. He is waiting for ops school. We are thrilled to have him home. He was in boot in the dead of winter; on his PIR day, we survived zero temps. There is lots withing walking distance of base. In addition, active duty military get in free to the zoo, museums, many other attractions, and once a year free to Seaworld. I think this is good for up to 4 guests if they register on a particular website. When I visited, we went aboard the Midway and had a great lunch beside the bay. We also had phone issues when he was in boot; we missed a call and his card ran out of minutes. That was a heartbreaking time. Best wishes!
Thank you both for explaining TAD and sharing experiences. Jillymom, I'm sorry you and your Sailor experienced the phone issues too and are past that. We will get past it too! Good evening to all...
Jeannette... oooo look at all the info your're getting YAY... my son was on hold for A school for about 3 to 4 weeks, 2 months for OPS, then a month while he waited to move across the bay.... well so far we see eachother about every 6 mo, ( we live in KY) until next spring when the JPJ does a hull swap to hawaii.. My son did do some TAD with the seals, LOVED it... LOL no, never missed a phone call i had my phone glued to my face... hahha she'll get to call again.. don[t worry hugs..
Thank you all for the information (and Jeanette for asking)!! My SR PIRs on 09/27 and will be heading to Cali. So excited! A former STG warned me that it is easy for Sailors to spend a ton of money there and she, herself, got into a lot of debt. I've relayed this information to my SR in hopes this doesn't happen. I know Cali is expensive. Do STG families have a FB page, as well?
Suzbee, I am happy for you that your PIR is this month! You must be on cloud 9 counting the days. Coming from SoCal I can vouch that it is easy to spend money there. Good caution for the SRs. I am not aware of a FB page.
Barbydahizz, I am sure you cherish those every 6 mo visits. How exciting that he had some time with the Seals. Lucky you and him to have never missed a call. That is all our dream! Thanks for the encouragement. Sounds like you may have Hawaii travel on the horizon!
I'm in a FB group for STGs, but not one for moms. Lots of salty old sailors and they are a hoot. The easiest way to blow money is in the bars for those over 21. There are discounts everywhere for active military; there are also those who target the military with things like new car discounts and take advantage of their financial naivete. They are offered things like deferred payments (bad idea!), etc. And, since they usually haven't established credit yet, they put in hidden fees. My AF son had an extra monthly fee on his phone bill because of that.
My husband would tell me stories of guys on his base who would go to the bank on Friday to get a loan to go out o the bars that night. Banks don't hesitate to approve loans for the military because they know they have a steady paycheck! Very easy to get into debt out here, and to blow all of your money if you're not careful. There are of course tons of bars within walking distance of the base, and no shortage of ways to get in trouble!
yup for those over 21 its easy to spend a wad of cash especially since you've been at RTC my son spent a few hundred on his first TAT then his 2nd TAT.... then bought a truck but, the Navy has taught our sailors to becareful with their money and if you get in a ton of debt its easy to be kicked out .. that was not taught durning my navy years..learned the hard way.. Anyway there are lots of things our sailors are able to enjoy for free or practically free while in san diego.. the zoo, sea world etc.. they will learn all about it when they get there oh another big expense was the boys TV Xbox and gaming crap.... UGH... anyway enjoy and hugs to all
The FB group is a closed group that you can put in a request to be in. Just search for STG and STS, it'll come up. It's run by Victor Caine. I mostly just listen. They talk in acronyms and jargon, but it's useful for your sailor to join that community.
I like that FB group, jillymom, but you're right it's more for the sailors themselves. They have inside jokes spoken in Sonar-speak, and most of the time I have no idea what they are saying. Pictures are good though. :) I do wish there was a mom's FB page. I loved our PIR one, and I would love to see one for STGs or for San Diego A school. There are groups it seems for every A school but that one. I've been looking on here too.....is there possibly an A School San Diego group on here that I'm just not finding?
No there are not any groups on FB or here for SONAR A-school.... It's just such a small rate compared to the others! My husband had less than 20 people in his A school class, about 12 in his C school. But anyone is welcome to create one, FB and this page are both public forums and the groups themselves are not created or moderated by the Navy or the A schools.
Wondering now too...My daughter gave me an address (San Diego) yesterday to send pkgs to. She said it is the post office across from her building, and when I asked how to address it she said just her name and the address, because the base owned the zip code. And she just goes and picks it up. I did that, and now I'm worryiing it wasn't enough.
Sharla, she's right with the address I questioned my son on it and he said, yea thats it.. I said "OK" and his stuff got there.. yea, I too look at STG on FB yup STGspeak hahah I ask my son what this means or that means... his first reaction is "how do you know that?" i said FB told me he said OHHHHH but then I speak Aviationspeak to him and he's clueless hahahahhahahahah
Sharla, the address I use includes a unit # and street address plus city/zip. The downside to creating a FB page is, not only do many people not have a FB account, there are constantly OPSEC concerns and a lot of Sonar stuff is classified. All the Buds (SEAL candidates) recently were told to leave our PIR group, for example.
Jillymom, those concerns about a FB page are the same as here. This is not a secure site, it is not created, maintained or patrolled by the Navy, it's just another social networking site like FB is. OPSEC is a concern whenever you post anything publicly not just on FB.
Hi everyone...just got back from San Diego where we were able to visit our Sailor in the evening after his "C" school class....It is very interesting to see all the young men and women at this small base keeping very busy and learning all about their new job....we were lucky enough to stay at the Navy Lodge on Coronado "what a beautiful place"...and yes, it is expensive down here...
and yes, there are plenty of places for them to spend their money...
Also our Sailor did TAD with the EOD and enjoyed that assignment as well...take care...
GMA sounds like you had an awesome visit... yes, it is expensive eesh, My sons ship just pulled into port friday afternoon from a few days underway for training... Isn't Coronado gorgeous? went to the beach outside the navy lodge while we were there visiting..
Barbydahlzz, we actually watched your son's ship pull into port on friday...and yes, Coronado is something else...also the Navy Lodge is top notch...looking forward to going back there in a few months..
Ducking in here....don't think I've been back since my daughter PIR'd. She's in San Diego now, it's been 2 1/2 weeks, she's on hold to class up. Was supposed to Phase up this week I think but got in trouble for having a phone in her pocket. She forgot it was there and entered a no-phones area and got ripped a new one and phase up privileges revoked for 30 days. :( So she stays a phase 1 and is really down about it while her friends are phasing up. It's a hard lesson learned though, she has to realize it's not high school or even college, even though right now on hold it may feel like it with so much free time and this base being pretty lax. She has to realize her job involves responsibility and security and she can't make careless mistakes. Sad for her though.
That's too bad Sharla! They do a lot of growing up! I think everyone has a Sailor that has experienced something of the same.... My son married another STG and they are discovering new issues everyday!
My daughter will be going to San Diego after 10/18 PIR. I'm going to give her an extra heads up about the cell phone rule, learning from your daughter's experience. Sorry that happened
This is the current sailor- Building 11 is a secret classified building and all electronics are not allowed. The Chiefs and other Instructors dont take kindly to elecronics especially the NMT. Phase up process is Phase 1 for 2 weeks along with completeing some online lessons, a community service event, and watch qualifications. Phase 3 which allows almost complete freedom requires 3 weeks of phase 2, a phase up interview, a couple more online lessons, and 2 more community service events. Phase 1 is uniform at all times, no driving in personal vehicles, and a curfew at 2200. Phase 2 Allows Civilian clothes, personal vehicles, and weekend curfew at 0000. Phase 3 eliminates curfew.
My son PIRed on 9/13/13 and when he arrived in San Diego on 9/14 was told that A school wouldn't start for a few weeks. Last week he was told he may be on hold another week. I haven't spoken with him or gotten a text from him since Saturday night. I heard from my brother that my son called him on Monday and said school started! He must have gotten a last minute class... Is there a chance his phone was taken away from him?
Not only is it really busy for them, but they can have rather unusual hours. We don't hear from our son except on the weekends, because due to the time differences, any other day is impossible.
I would love to communicate with other STG moms too. My sailor should class up in early December ( I think). I think this week is when they find out where they will be stationed after A school.
