My sailor is in her fifth week at A school. She said that she doesn't know if there will be a hold before Ops school yet, and they are supposed to go on stand down for christmas and get to come home but she doesn't know the dates yet. Also, some of her friends have received their orders, but she hasn't yet. There seems to be a long hold for a ship, her friends orders so far have been for April.
Suzbee - This is all I know about. My son is in San Diego, has been since last November. He is STG E4; but has surgery and will be out for eight months. Not sure if he will be able to do school but we will see. They are busy and time change (we are in Florida) does make it tough. Lots of quick texts!
Hi All - Our daughter PIRd on October 18. Her training was scheduled to begin on October 28 but has not begun and there is no word when. She has done several community service events and was on a frigate yesterday. That had to have been exciting!
Hi all. there was the question of a FB page for STG... there is but is pretty much for those who are STGs now or was an STG at one time.. bummer My sailor graduated A school back in end of May 2012 and was on hold for OPS until sometime in mid july.. but did get orders just before the end of A school, determines where you go for OPS. he LOVES his ship .. he's on the JPJ
It can be very difficult to figure out exactly when and where of everything. Our son is in San Diego, and hope to come home for Christmas. After he should ship out, but nothing is ever definite, and I think he wants to make sure he doesn't talk about anything confidential. We also have a lot of quick texts.
Hi Ladies! Our Sailor finished A school in July and expects to start OPS, or C school in February. Until then, they are kept very busy cleaning, painting and detailing all around the area. A lot they can't talk about for sure. The 4 yr Sailors will go out to the fleet after A school; but it looks like there are holds for that. I'm sure things change and the fiscal atmosphere probably affects operations.
There are ALWAYS holds between every school and usually once they finish school and go to their ship. Obviously it is different for each Sailor, even if they are in the same classes. My husband is a 6 year STG so he had C school after A school. Here was his timeline: He finished A school in Feb. 2012. Was on hold for C school until May 2012. In that time they send them to different "working parties" - my husband was on a crew that went to the BUDS complex on Coronado (where they train the SEALS) and did a lot of maintenance and cleaning over there. He also did a stint as the duty driver - driving people between bases, to medical, to the airport, etc. When they're on holds they have the opportunity to go TAD - temporary assigned duty - they have to sign up for these and I highly encourage it because they are FUN and they're a great learning experience (PLUS they make some extra money!). Out here in San Diego they have some great ones, like they can go to San Clemente island for a week or so and train with the BUDS. Then once they class up for C school, which is actually about 2 or 3 different smaller length schools, they'll complete those, and there will be various hold times. And your Sailor will be in C school with some of the same people he was in A school with but different people also. Depending on what system they choose to train him/her on. My husband graduated C school in April 2013 and then was on hold until July 2013 when he got his orders to his first ship, and deployed in August.
Hi abuon18, thanks for the timeline info. I have a question which may be silly but I just don't know so am asking: Is the time they are on hold considered part of the 4 or 6 year commitment or does only the time count when they are actually in school or deployed?
The time they are on hold is part of their commitment (if there is a special case, like they get put on medical hold or something they may extend because they are required to serve at sea a certain length of time, for example if my husband decides to re-enlist he will have to spend another year at sea to fulfill his commitment before getting his shore duty rotation). Especially for the STG rate, which is more sea-based than some other rates. There are not many options for them on shore duty so they have to spend more time at sea than other rates. BUT just because they are on a sea rotation does not mean they will always be deployed. When my husband comes back from this deployment, he will still be considered "sea duty" even though his ship will be in port. And that time in port DOES count towards his original commitment.
Hi abuon18! Your feedback is great! To extend my question to our particular situation, our daughter arrived in San Diego October 19 and the start of training A has been delayed until ???. So is her time right now part of fulfilling her commitment? BTW, I admire you so much being a Navy wife! My husband travels in his job, but I know that is nothing compared to having a spouse deployed!
Thank you Jeanette! It's not easy to be a loved one of ANYONE in the military, we all worry the same! I'm glad I can help, I know there are a lot of missing pieces when you don't get to talk to your sons/daughters all the time, so I am happy to share what I've learned by living with it :)
Yes her time right now is fulfilling her commitment. Eventually, down the road when she decided to re-enlist or not, if she DOES decide to re-enlist she will have to spend an extra year on a ship before switching to shore duty but if she does not decide to re-enlist it will not extend her current commitment.
Your clarity of explanation helps us very much, abuon18, and also thank you for your acknowledgement of how we all miss our loved ones :). I hope you have a beautiful Sunday and I maybe sending more questions as time goes on.
I can't speak for the Navy Lodget in SD, but we stayed at the one in Great Lakes for PIR and it was fine. Very comfortable.
My sailor is going to a friend's (whose family is there local) for Thanksgiving, and saving her leave to come home for Christmas. I can't wait. And what's sad is I already know it's going to go by too fast. One week is like a blink. :)
She's taking her Comp Test today for A school and I'm nervous for her. She didn't do well on the quiz yesterday, and she has struggled with just pulling off low B's all along. That's with extra night study logged in. If she passes, graduation is Dec 5th. She hasn't received her orders yet, and it is killing her because everyone she knows is getting theirs. Her BFF is going to the east coast, her roommate is staying there, and her boyfriend is going overseas in July.
Sharla, my husband's whole class had their orders by February and he didn't get his until July! The wait is TORTUROUS!
Karen, I haven't stayed at the Navy Lodge on base because I live in San Diego but I can tell you from working in the hotel industry that anywhere close to base is going to be not nearly as nice (old and rundown!). Farther out from base the hotels are nicer but they do get more expensive as well.
We went to sd for sons stg graduation. It was a great experience. Since we rented a car, distance from base was not too much of an issue. So... think about using Homeaway.com or trip advisor or alwaysonvacation.com to find a condo. That way (for not much more than a hotel room) you have a nice place to hang out and you can make meals instead of eating out all the time. The cost, though a little more than a hotel was in the end much less expensive because of food,. There are even some places in the towers at coronado.
Sharla-congrats on the 82! My son is not a great student and all the extra studying will pay off. Encourage her to give 110% right through the end. Karen, I stayed at the Quality Inn my last night for $55 and was surprised at the great view and a decent room. We stayed at the Gateway at Great Lakes as my AF son was there, but I've been told your sailor has to be in the room with you to get in on base. That's the best option if someone in your party is eligible.
My daughter just went to MEPS on Monday. If nothing changes, she will go to boot camp on March 18, 2014 as a Sonar Technician. I've been scouring these pages but now that she's official, I have officially joined.
Congrats, jkcmom. Once she starts boot, there will be a Navy for Moms group for your PIR week. Those are very challenging weeks and there will be a PIR group for you as well on facebook for that PIR week that will help you immensely. Boot camp is pretty intense; be prepared for a ride! There's a lot to learn; advise her to start her curl-ups, running and swimming soon!
The Navy Lodge on base at Point Loma is just fine...if you can there is also a Navy Lodge on Coronado..but it fills up fast (it is like a 4 star hotel)...
Has anyone heard of how long the wait for c school in San Diego is right now? My husband and I have been separated since April 2013 and they're saying he isn't going to see any orders until dec 2014....does this sound normal?
Amber- that sounds pretty normal. I don't know how long the wait is but my husband started C school in May of 2012 and got his orders in June of 2013, to give you some sort of time frame. When he gets his C-school orders they should be long enough for you to move with him....in fact there was a classmate of my husband's that the Navy made his wife & son move out to San Diego to be with him while he finished C school so I don't believe you'll be separated until December.
Once he gets his c-school orders, he can start the process for you to move, even if he doesn't actually start c-school yet. So hopefully his orders will come through sooner than later so you can at least move to be with him!
abuon18 - My son says it is really over-crowded right now. Hopefully things will adjust over time. From his PIR to the start of C school will be just over a year if all holds well. Hope you will be able to get over to Pt Loma while he is in C school; that long of a separation must be unbearable for a young couple!
Jillymom- that's unfortunately the standard at their base! It took my husband over a year & a half from PIR to begin C-school and then another year to complete it. Luckily as soon as Amberw27's husband has his orders they will be able to begin the process of moving her -it doesn't matter when he actually starts school as long as he has the orders so hopefully he will get his orders soon & she'll be able to move there!
As for your son.... I'm sure he's anxious to be done with school and get in the fleet but tell him to enjoy this time as much as possible! Once he gets to a ship life is so much worse!
Just learned that my Grandson will class up on Monday for C School...how long actually is C School .. have heard between 6 and 9 months ...and will there be any more schooling after that?
Hi Gma, depending on which system he is going to school for it could be shorter or longer. My husband's C school was actually a bunch of shorter classes so each time a class ended he had another hold time before starting the other... His total C school length was 11 months. Some of his classmates finished a lot earlier because they were learning different systems.
abuon18...Thank you, all I know is that he will be learning the older system not the new...which I am surprised that is the case since I would think that the "Navy" would be updating ASAP (if they are allocated the funding)
My daughter's A school started just a few weeks after she arrived in San Diego (September), but she had friends that started immediately and other friends that started later. Baglady - As a former Travel Agent all I can say is BOOK IT! The Hale Koa is plain jane as far as hotels go. BUT, its on the best part of the beach in Waikiki. Also, if you have time I recommend day trips to the other islands. Kauai is my favorite.
Karen- My Sailor waited for about a month before school started. She kept busy, though, working and volunteering so the time went by quickly. Once it happens, though, they are BUSY. She said school and studying took up at least 12 hours of her day. Our daily messages/convos dropped to once or twice a week!
Our son has classed up for C school a month ahead of time! He finished A school in Sept and is very happy to be making progress. But he'll be so busy now, we'll probably not hear from him much. We live in Hawaii; if anyone has q's about anything, feel free to message me. If you have military or DOD id, there are also beautiful beachfront cottages in Waimanalo and cottages in Volcano on the Big Island. Also the Army Rec Ctr on Pokai Bay on Oahu.
Hi Jillymom....hope you had a good holiday and wishing you a very Happy New Year..
Our Grandson will be classing up for C school on Monday...he is really looking forward to it since he has been on hold since June. I guess it matters what system that they are doing as to when they class up....Hope you Mom is doing better..will you be coming to Calif. in the near future?
My son is in att school and I know he will go to A school in San Diego next. How long is A school and will he also have C school? If so, how long is that? Thank you.
Scubed, my daughter's A school was 9 weeks, and it said that on her papers as well, so you may want to look on his. She is a 4 year, so she did not have C school, but she will have Ops school. Supposed to start that next week but her class got cancelled, so it may not be till March.
One thing really cool, she and 40 other students there on base in San Diego that are on hold for Ops, got picked for a 30 day training underway. They reported to a ship earlier this week, they are living on it, rotating through the sonar room, engineering, and the deck crew, and getting hands on experience with the actual equipment as time allows. Learning how to live on a ship. And they will go underway next week for a week, back in for a week, back out for a week. Getting a taste of it before real deployment, and I think that's awesome. She won't be such a green newbie when she goes to her ship later.
Which is good, because the first two days on this ship.....she got lost constantly. LOL. She said it's a huge maze and SO confusing. One night when most of the other sailors weren't back from leave yet, she practiced her routes while no one could see her looking lost. :)
Thank you Sharla That sounds really neat. He signed on for six years so maybe he does have c school. Have you been out to San Diego? I may go see him when he is there, Chicago is too cold to visit now.
6 years have ATT, A school & C school. 4 years only have A school & then a school for their specific operating system.
A school is the same for 4 years & 6 years so it's usually a mixed class of both groups.
My husband is a 6 year, he was in school for almost 2 years before he got to his ship.... Left for boot camp Jul 2011 and just joined his first ship this past June 2013.
C school is also in San Diego. He will enjoy Point Loma. The base is across the street from a little shopping center with some restaurants & close to the beach too!
It is! They work hard but it's a lot of fun too. A lot of opportunities for extra training, like Sharla's daughter. The BUDs base in on Coronado (training for SEALs) so sometimes they are offered the opportunity to train with them when they go to San Clemente Island.
Ok Moms here's a link to a hidden gem. www.sweetwaterhorses.com This is a working horse farm about 15 miles from Point Loma. They have a guesthouse for rent that sleeps 8. They are pet friendly too. It's not fancy (dude ranch style) but it is a great deal at $900 a week if you have a large group. Plus you have a complete kitchen and a block from a mall.
My son just started his last school in San Diego. He has been there for a year this is his 2nd C school. He is ready to go to the fleet! There are so many great things to do. Sailing and surfing! He also was able to work with the SEALS and had a blast!

Thank you Sharla That sounds really neat. He signed on for six years so maybe he does have c school. Have you been out to San Diego? I may go see him when he is there, Chicago is too cold to visit now.

A school is the same for 4 years & 6 years so it's usually a mixed class of both groups.
My husband is a 6 year, he was in school for almost 2 years before he got to his ship.... Left for boot camp Jul 2011 and just joined his first ship this past June 2013.

He is looking forward to getting on a ship. It sounds like it will be a long wait. Where is c school?

My son just started his last school in San Diego. He has been there for a year this is his 2nd C school. He is ready to go to the fleet! There are so many great things to do. Sailing and surfing! He also was able to work with the SEALS and had a blast!
