My son left Hawaii on Feb 11. He landed in O'Hare on Feb 12 and waited several hours to be picked up. He hung on to his cellphone as long as he could, calling often before his final call to tell us its going in the box to be sent home. Your son will get to know others and gain strength and support from them. Hang in there :-)
  • RuthB13

Thanks Lu P  -  so our sons are a day apart

Try searching for the group "New Members Stop Here". There's a boot camp video that I found to be very helpful. The officers seemed very supportive vs. Dictative. I hope it wasn't just for the sake of being videotaped. My son's entry date is Feb 11. I'm wondering if the delayed or canceled flights of other SR's could delay the group altogether, which could push back their potential PIR date(?)
  • Lu P

RuthB13, if your son sounded stressed, it could be because he was being rushed to make his final call...that step is also in the video.

Good evening Navy Moms! I have to tell you, I am really enjoying reading everyone's posts. My son leaves in 12 days, so we are really enjoying being stuck in the house with all this snow!
It really makes me feel better knowing that I can talk to you all and be able to express my feelings once he's gone.
I do have a question though. Does my son need to bring a copy of his immunization records with him? I have read in a couple of places that he does, but when I made him ask his recruiter, he told my son that he didn't need it.
I'm hoping someone can shed some light on this for me.
Thank you all again, God bless all of our children, and have a great night!
  • 29junkie

    Still no letter....

  • HollySue

29junkie - when did you child arrive at GL?
  • 29junkie

arrived 2/5..so I know it can still be a bit but REALLY would like that little piece of paper :)

  • HollySue

29junkie - my son arrived at GL on 2/3 and I received the box on Monday and the form letter today. I addressed the envelopes tonight for the letters I have written and dropped them off at the post office!
  • Liberty

Hi Giselda- I was told that they did not need an immunization record. We were going to give him all of the shots before he went (I'm sure he had most of them) but his recruiter said there was more than a 50% chance they would still give them to him! So, I thought it was better to just let him get them there. I hope that it went well! I suppose that I would have heard if there had been a problem. I also enjoy reading everyone's posts....We were without power for over 30 hours and I was reading them on my phone!! They kept me entertained! I am over this winter weather! Ready for spring!!! Our poor sons and daughters in boot camp. It is too cold up there!!!! Happy Valentine's day to everyone!!!

  • xsubman

son just arrived on 2/13. got our phone call last night.

  • Annabel Lee

Does anyone know if we will see our SR before or after PIR? Or both?
  • ⚓ Terri ~ Nathan's Mom ⚓

exsubman, how long was your call ? was it the im here call ?

  • ⚓ Terri ~ Nathan's Mom ⚓

    Annabel, after PIR

  • Annabel Lee

Thanks Terri, how long do we get?
  • xsubman

yes just im here it was 1am our time zone

  • ⚓ Terri ~ Nathan's Mom ⚓

Annabel, I guess it depends on how soon they go to A school

  • Annabel Lee

Ok Terri.. Thanks. I was thinking the night before for some reason... I think my son might have told me that, or his dad.
  • xsubman

some things we came across on utube depends if A school in great lakes or shipping out area cause SR staying GL move out of compartment and into A school command and SR shipping out stay night in compartment which brings up debate of SR bringing back personal belonging i.e. cell phones, laptops my understanding liberty expires@2000 but hopefully in time other family will charm in and confirm more about seeing SR after PIR and how much time we spend with them

  • Annabel Lee

    Thanks for info xsubman..
  • lemonelephant

Annabel, see PIR Day and Liberty during PIR Weekend.

    Also, check your My Page.

  • lemonelephant

xsubman, your SR will know when Liberty will expire. Some who fly out must be back as early as 7 while others have until 9--around 8 pm (2000) is typical. See PIR Day and Liberty during PIR Weekend.

    Also, check your My Page.

  • lemonelephant

Anabel, some other branches of the military do have family day ahead of graduation, but not the Navy. There is a Meet and Greet the night before PIR, but the new Sailors are NOT present for that.

  • Annabel Lee

This site is SO helpful! I really wish I had waited on booking my flight, because I now know my son has liberty all weekend, and my return flight is Saturday morning.. I checked, and the airline I'm using charges too much to change flights. I'm not sure what I'm going to do now. Sad I didnt get all of the info from here first, and mad I listened to his dad.
  • Annabel Lee

Changed my flight, going to be with my SR Saturday! :)
  • NavyMom93

That's great, Annabel!  I was feeling bad for you!

  • xsubman

wow that was a quick navy career got a call and my SR being SEP xfr to ship 5 on base a whole 24hrs this just keeps getting better by the minute

  • Annabel Lee

    Thanks NavyMom93!
  • 29junkie

HAPPY GIRL!!!! Got box on Tuesday, letter on Friday and...yes...a PHONE CALL today. Of course right in the middle of Walmart :)

  • Momma J

    Oh no xsubman:(
  • Bev (Proud2BaNavyMom)

Super Excited got the Box Monday his letter today!!!!

  • Kimba

    Xsubman

    What's SEP?
  • ProudMominJersey

My son's (and several other recruits) flight was cancelled this week due to weather on the east coast. Any thoughts on whether they can somehow "catch up" with their original group or will they be assigned to the following week's group? What will happen to his rate if he is 1 week later?

  • xsubman

    being separated from the navy

  • irishgirl5176

Oh, xsubman...I am so sorry. I hope your SR is ok and wish them the best. I can't imagine how you must be feeling. You are in my thoughts.
  • Kimba

xsubman, so sorry to hear that. I hope he is OK and cant get back with his div or a new one soon. thinking of you

  • lemonelephant

Kimba, going to SEPS means he is most likely going home. Very few who go to SEPS are able to stay--a few can fight and stay, but not many.

xsubmom, I'm sorry that he got that far without disclosing the info (or if he did that he was given wrong info from the recruiter or maybe even told not to mention it) and addressing the situation ahead of time.

  • JRH (ship 3 Div 137)

Jess my 18 year old son left Feb 11th from Knoxville TN.
  • Liberty

Hi Jess76...My son left on 2/4 and is in DIV 811- PIR 3/28. We got the letter and box on the same day about a week later....Welcome! As soon as you receive the letter you should join the group that wil be set us that will be PIR- and then the date. There are moms on there who are awesome and will answer questions. Also - make sure you know how long you will get to visit with your sailir after PIR before making flight reservations!

  • Annabel Lee

Liberty, I made flight arrangements without knowing that my son had liberty all weekend. I had to change my return flight, costing me a few hundred more dollars. :( everyone should read PIR weekend/liberty now, before you make arrangements.
  • StacyLHR (14/136)

Son left on the 11th, got a call today. :D
  • Lu P

StacyLHR--Congratulations!! My son left home in Hawaii on the 11th, arrived in Ohare on the 12th! Now I really have to keep my phone close by =) =)

    HAPPY FOR YOU!!!

  • Annabel Lee

Im happy for you Stacy! How long was the call?
  • Liberty

Hi Annabel Lee- Yes, I know that's why I told her that! I hate that it cost you more money! However, I am sure it will be worth it to get to see him more. I am looking at flights now and will make the decision in the next day or so. It is cheaper if we drive to another airport , so I have to decide if it is going to be worth it to do that. We are not planning to rent a car but instead use Sarge for transportation.I think we are going on Wednesday evening and coming back on Monday .
