It's not too early to check out the discussion, Things to Do in the Last Month before Your Future Sailor Leaves for..., and to start discussing some of the things there with your future Sailor such as how to handle bad news and who will be put on the Access List....

If you have not yet joined Boot Camp Moms (and loved ones), now is a good time to do so and to begin checking out the Pages (found under the pictures of the Members) starting with OPSEC and PERSEC (Making Changes to Your Profile) (some of you have changes that you need to make--at least change 3; make change 4 if your profile pic includes your future Sailor or recruit) and then go on to Arrival and What Happens at the RTC.

  • lemonelephant

I have left info on some of your My Pages about your future Sailor's rating (job/occupational specialty) or field and "A" School. If anyone else needs this info, leave a comment on my My Page with the rating or field and I will comment back on your My Page. I have info on every rating and field. I also have that info for the PACT programs.

  • momto navymat

Hi, my name is Mary Beth. My son leaves on May 8th. I'm still having a hard time with all of this so I hope by reading your posts it will put my mind at ease.

  • takevacation

I am beyond proud of my son. He ships 5/25 to bootcamp. Not sure what his graduation date will be yet. How can we figure that out. AFter graduation, he is off to Nuke School.
  • lemonelephant

takevacation, By counting 9 Fridays, PIR will most likely be 07/21/2017 for those who ship on 05/25/2017. Since he is shipping at the end of the week, it could be 07/28/2017 for some if they are held over for the next TG. That happens sometimes in the summer due to storms and the large number of recruits who ship in the summer. It is possible for some who arrive on the same date to have PIR a week apart. Wait on The Form Letter to know the PIR date for sure. Arrival and What Happens at the RTC within Boot Camp Moms (and loved ones) will let you know what to expect.

  • takevacation

Thanks. I am guessing his first day of boot will be memorial day?
  • lemonelephant

akevacation, 05/26/2017 will be his first P-day and then he will be on P-HOLD until 05/30/2017, which will be P-2.

  • Wisconsinmom

My son leaves May 16th. I am excited for his new walk in life.
  • lemonelephant

movielover, no, your your future Sailor will not have a longer time at BC due to the holidays. He will have HOLD days on Memorial Day and on Independence Day, but PIR will still be on either 07/14/2017 if he is placed in one of the last divisions from the week before and ends up in a Push Division or 07/21/2017 if he is placed in one of the first divisions of his week's TG. It is possible for some who arrive on the same date to have PIR a week apart. Wait on The Form Letter to know the PIR date for sure. Arrival and What Happens at the RTC within Boot Camp Moms (and loved ones) will let you know what to expect.

Yes, PIR is on Friday unless a federal holiday is at the end of the week and causes it to be moved up. That will not happen on either of the possible PIR dates.

Yes, those who fly out to "A" School will most likely fly out the day after PIR. Some who fly to Pensacola MAY fly out on Sunday, but that doesn't happen often and will not affect your then Sailor. Your then Sailor WILL fly out the day after PIR since he will be flying to Gulfport, MS unless something causes him to be held in the THU, which is rare for the typical graduating Sailor. I left info on the SW rating on your My Page previously and it includes the link, PIR Day and Liberty during PIR Weekend, which will help you when planning for PIR.

  • Karen

My son is leaving May 15th.  I am noticing many different May dates, could mine be mistaken?

  • lemonelephant

Karen, Recruits ship to the RTC on Monday through Thursday when those days are not federal holidays, so a 05/15/2017 date in possible. Remember that he will go to the hotel and spend the night on the 14th.

  • Karen

Thank you for the reply. I did not realize he will actually be leaving the day before.  Are we able to stay with him for any time at all?  Or is it a drop off at the hotel?

  • Nvy mom Toy

My son is leaving May 25th. He says it's a long time to wait but for me time is rushing by.
  • lemonelephant

Karen, your son's recruiter will pick him up and take him to the hotel, but you are able to eat with him at the hotel, but no, you cannot stay with him.

  • lemonelephant

movielover, yes, you should be able to go to the airport to see your then recruit off if she wants that. Some airlines consider going to BC as under orders and will allow family members to accompany the new recruit to the gate and some do not, so be aware that you may have to say goodbye outside of Security. You cannot take her to the airport; she must ride the van or bus with the other recruits.

  • Karen

Thank you ladies for the replies/comments and information.

I'm getting nervous and also happy for him because he is looking forward to going.

moviegoer, if you meant will the 22nd be her first DOT or the 26th, then the 23rd will be a P-day and it will depend on when the division fills how many P-days she has on when her first DOT is. Her first DOT will be 05/30/2017 or one day that week. 05/27-05/29 will all be HOLD days.

  • jberg12

Just found out that our son leaves on 25 May, after initially being told to expect a December ship date. He is going into the Nuke program.

  • newnavywife

    My husband leaves on 5/23!

  • newnavywife

For those of you that were able to watch your sailor swear in at MEPS, how does that work?  Do we get a few minutes to talk to them or no?

    Thanks!

  • SHIP 5 Mom

My daughter leaves on Monday (5/15). Our MEPS is undergoing some construction so I'm still trying to get permission to watch her swear in. I'm also trying to get permission from the airport to hang out with her. *Fingers Crossed*. She's been in DEP for 13 months. She was originally supposed to ship last September but they had a big group of recruits delayed...so now...here we are.

  • SHIP 5 Mom

Hi Colagrl, I think (someone correct me if I'm wrong) they can purchase calling cards at the NEX.

I don't know when they are allowed to actually make the call, but at least you know he'll be able to at some point. :D

  • lemonelephant

Colagrl, yes, your recruit can buy a phone card at the NEX. With over 6000 recruits at the RTC, not all of them will get to call this weekend, but some will. Sorry to say this, but your recruit is still in P-days, so it is unlikely that you will receive a call this weekend. See Arrival and What Happens at the RTC and Phone Cards and Phone Calls.

  • SHIP 5 Mom

My girl leaves for MEPS in 5 hours, shipping tomorrow, so I'm sitting here, letting her sleep in one last time for a while, drinking my coffee and crying at every Mothers Day thing on Facebook.
  • Amber

MandakeMom I wish I would have seen this post sooner to give you some support.  My son goes to MEPS tomorrow at 3:30.  He doesn't see what the big deal is.  I know it's so hard for a mother to not get emotional when we let our mind wonder.  Just know you are not alone on this.  I wish you and your family the strength to get through these next few days.

  • SHIP 5 Mom

Vickie thank you so much. I've been a little weepy today, but doing pretty good. Tommorw I'm going to try and get a gate pass at the airport to spend a little more, time with her. She's really super stoked so it does ease the way I feel. She was all smiles when her recruiter took her away to MEPS today. That's my girl!
  • Whiteflowers

Hi..My nephew is leaving for bc today. It hasn't hit me yet..I guess because I live in TX while he was in school up in KS. But I talked/texted with be him daily. I'm so glad he came to visit earlier this year. But dang it I wanted to hug him before he left! Now I'm waiting for "the call" that he arrived at RTC. I still can't believe he's an adult and makes his own decisions..I always tell him I wish he'd never grown up and stayed my baby forever.. Lol...Man I love that kid

Can someone tell me my son called from RTC and said he'd call in 3 weeks, do they only make calls on certain days of the week.  Worried I'll miss it.

  • lemonelephant

You may receive an "I'm still alive!" call in week 3 or 4 (calendar week, not DOT), but that call can come before or after that depending on when the RDC is able to schedule the phone banks. Don't expect a call, but do have your phone available from 8ish am to 8ish pm Central Time and be pleasantly surprised when you receive a call.  The "I'm still alive!" call or other calls the RDC schedules usually come in the mornings on weekdays except on the day of a PIR because the "I'm a Sailor!" calls, which are typically made 1-7 days, but can come up to 10 days, before PIR, are in the afternoon and evenings, but calls can come anytime during those hours on Saturday.  Calls on the day of a PIR or on Sunday come between 1 and 8 pm. Calls for security reasons or for information are generally made during regular business hours.  Remember "No news is good news!" See Phone Cards and Phone Calls.

I got "the box" today. Felt like it was a death box.   Had a good cry then opened it.  He took a phone charger but that wasn't in it.  Just his clothes and phone.
