  • Thr33boiswungurl

    I meant June 27
  • 3B'smom

Yes. I don't think it lasted 10 seconds.
  • Thr33boiswungurl

Yes and it sounded like a damn jail call I'm a total wreck I miss my baby so much I just don't understand why we can't write them until they write us
  • 3B'smom

Hopefully the boxes and letters will arrive soon.
  • Thr33boiswungurl

I'm just so worried I heard the first 3 weeks are the hardest
  • Lea (SHIP 11 DIV 242)

The first three weeks are difficult because its a whole new world for them.
My son has been in bc for 15 days now. He said its tough. They miss home. They are always being yelled at by someone, but, he has teamed up with a few great guys. They are becoming good friends. They study together. Spend their waking hours together. They are making friends for life. I know you are proud of him. I know you're scared for him. And you miss him. All of that is normal.
What we, as civilians, need to come to terms with is, they are now looking for us and to us for supoort, through letter writing. Tell him youre proud, youre honored, he's your hero. Its hard. Stay strong. You believe in him. The US Navy is a great career. Im proud of him too!
  • Hockey13chic

My son has been in BC for 15 days and I just received a letter from him. He is the second oldest and great at the physical testing and swimming but struggles folding his bed. He said that there are others helping him. Thanks to those recruits and the moms who provided that skill!! They must network to help eachother out. Where one is weak, another is strong. They are learning to rely on eachother but also to grow where they lack. They are in this together!

Hockey13chic...I read this earlier and couldn't wait to get home to check the mail. It is day 15 for me! No letter. But I'm so happy for you! As far as bed making...I kept telling my son to let me teach him hospital corners. (I'm an old nurse)! He kept shrugging me off. I'm internally laughing. After what yr son said...I bet mine is wishing he listened to me! Also...all my kids were number 13 in their sports!
  • Marchella

Been texting my son while he is at the Chicago airport eating dinner- feeling blessed to have these extra few words.
  • Kj

Got a text that my sons plane landed in Chicago! Was a lil worried about the weather but he said the flight was fine! Glad it was for his first time on a plane!Should be getting my official call in a few hours! I asked him if he's ready for some yellin??? Hope they have a good first night!
  • Hockey13chic

Jennifer...sorry no letter but maybe it's just a day off. I live in WI so the mail travels fast from Great Lakes. I told my son to help others in their weakness and he would receive on his. I believe this moment will cause him to be a better man. And yes...he did not listen to me either when I showed him hospital corners. The 13 is huge in my family.
  • Kj

He is officially at boot camp!!! Got the I'm made it to boot camp safely call!!! He sounded great!
  • soccermom19

So I see a few comments out that that their new recruit landed and was finally at BC.  My son texted me "Here" when he got to Chicago as per my request to let me know that he arrived safely.  He is a man of very few words.  Then at 11:40pm he called me from his cell phone said It was him (as if I wouldn't recognize the voice or the fact that he was calling from his phone) and I will write in 3 weeks..  And then hung up.  Is that the infamous call? I thought it would be from a Navy phone line and was surprised it came that late at night.  Now I realize that Chicago is an hour early in time than where I am but was not expecting then. Was expecting a few more words- not just It's me.  I will write in 3 weeks. Then click.  And especially did not expect it to come from his own phone.

Or was that just a call he made to me before he had to give up his cell phone?  Any one out there - can you tell me what your experience with the call is?  Will I get another but official call?

  • jennifer

Soccermom19...that's is the same call I got before the phone goes into the box! My call was probably 15 seconds. Glad I got it. Now you wait for the box and then a few days later the form letter will come with his address.
  • soccermom19

Jennifer,  Were you surprised that it came from your recruit's own cell phone?

  • soccermom19

ok.  Nice to know Black Belt Mom.  Everything I was told previously was to expect a call from the Chicago area and needed to pick up.  But I guess they use their own cell phones now.  Makes sense.  My son's call was brief.  But as soon as he said It's me.  I said I love you.  So I got my words in before he hung up.  :-)  Now we are Officially at BC!!!  Any mom's out there go in this week out of the Philadelphia airport?

  • jennifer

Soccermom19...no I had read it would come from their phone. If not they would have to borrows someone else's. The recruit book had a list of things to get and when the direct deposit form had the wrong number on it...I was googling what to do and it led me to this site. Thank goodness! So much info. Now you start the wait. They say count down 9 Fridays and it will go fast! This Friday will be number 3!! It is hard to be cut off for so long.
  • Navymomsy64

Hi ladies! Glad you got your first call (it's scripted) if they have their cell phones they will call on them from bootcamp. Cell phones will be sent home in "the box". The box comes FedEx, so you'll have to sign for the box! My kid got there 6/7, got box 6/13 and formed letter 6/15. Please if their are any words of wisdom I have, CALLS (except that first one you got), LETTERS (formed with PIR date and personal), when you get the box, everything is random when you receive it, because one mom may post she got something and others for a whil. don't get anything and start panicking. Be patient with the process, don't get worried and frustrated, it will all come in time, trust me, just not on your time schedule. I have to constantly tell myself no news is good news!
  • Marchella

I got the call last night, whats weird is that he had his cell phone however the call came from a PA number- why not his cell phone. I was texting with him at the airport so I know it was still working. Anyways yes it was brief with some yelling in the backround. Now I can start counting down the days.

  • Butterball

Good morning ladies, I am just finding this forum. While going through the things I am to expect next, I see something about telephone calling cards. I am not sure, but am I supposed to mail one or take it during PIR? From what I see, it should have gone with my child, but alas, already gone 6/27. Please advise, very confused mom. Thank you in advance.

  • Navymomsy64

Keep your phones close, they get random calls during bootcamp and you never know when they come. Definitely if area code is 847!
  • Marchella

Yes as soon as you get the form letter letting you know his address go get a prepaid calling card that he can use from a phone - make sure its already activated. They should be able to make a call around week 3

  • Marchella

I got that call last night, its the call letting you know they made it to BC- right before the phone goes in the box- its a very short call, got mine last night.

  • jennifer

It was suggested they take a calling card. Did you ever see the magazine that the recruiters gave our kids to study? There was a list in the magazine with what they needed to bring and a vague outline of what would happen. I came across it by accident! Calling card...as card...direct deposit form.
  • Hockey13chic

I just sent my son a letter with a calling card from Walgreens.
  • CryptoDad

Jennifer is referring to the START Guide. A must read, along with the RTC Family Guide.

  • CryptoDad

And by the time you get the Form Letter with a mailing address there is a good chance that your Recruit has already purchased a phone card at the NEX.

Sending a phone card and stamps is not necessary, but its a subtle way of saying that you are expecting calls and letters. :)

  • Butterball

No Jennifer, I never saw the magazine. I have a question about direct deposit though, I hope you can help. I see where you said they were supposed to take the direct deposit slip, he had it ready to pack, and I told to. He said he had packed it, but I just found it on the dryer when I went home for lunch. Will I be able to mail it to him, after I get the information from him in the mail? Thank you in advance.

  • jennifer

Butterball.I bet he signed up for the Navy Credit union after he got there.I'm not sure but I assume they do all that busy work first while they wait for other people to arrive.but don't worry, your son will take care of it I'm sure. As far as the magazine goes I saw my son's by accident putting away clothes. It was on his bed. As I was flipping pages I saw the one page with a list. These SRs will figure out what they need. In 9 Fridays we all will have transformed Sailors!
  • Butterball

Yes, we sure will Jennifer, and I am so excited for him. I am not sure about which airport to fly into though, people here at the station are saying O'hare is a nightmare. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • Pooter527

O'Hare is unfortunately where most fly into.
  • Melanie

Thank you. So we should send a phone card ? And on the third week we mit receive a call. Just verifing
  • jennifer

Marybeth, did you know he had your phone charger? Were you looking for it? That made me laugh! My kid would do the same thing.
  • Kj

I got "the box" today!!! Fed ex said it wasn't supposed to get here til Wednesday(in california) but it got here early! He got to BC on wed the 28th
  • Marchella

My son got there wednesday as well, hopefully I will get it today.

  • soccermom19

My son got in on Wednesday too.  Got the call late that night.  Great to know that the boxes from Wednesday's arrivals are getting to their homes today. I am in New Jersey. I'm hoping for the box today as well!!!

  • MontanaNavyMom

My son left on Tuesday and I am so hoping I get the box today.
  • soccermom19

Marybeth, so funny!!!  Your own charger.  Are they all alike???!!!

  • Hockey13chic

Ship 6 DIV 243 got a call from my SR and talked for 11 minutes! It was awesome to hear from him.
  • 3B'smom

"The box" arrived here in TN today too (BC arrival 6/27).
  • Thr33boiswungurl

Yayyyyyy I received my recruits form letter he left on the 27 of June....no box yet but it felt really good to at least get something with his handwriting on it(I'm sure they are hard on him about his writing because even after graduating high school and doing 2 years of college it's stil chicken scratch) well he is on Ship 02 and division924 can't wait to recieve his box so that I can sniff it lol.
  • 3B'smom

    The letter arrived!
  • 3B'smom

PIR on August 25th. Ship 02, Div 942
  • soccermom19

I am overwhelmed right now.  I do not know what to do.  The box arrived and had my sons clothes & phone but no paper letting me know where/how to write him.  No way for me to know how to make travel plans and what date I should be planning for.  I don't understand how I'm supposed to plan travel.  When will I know? My son arrived at Great Lakes (Chicago area) on 6/28.  I'm just so upset.

  • jennifer

Soccermom19...the form letter comes by itself. A few days after the box. Then you can make plans!!
  • Marchella

Soccermom19 Its ok do not worry, my son left on the 28th as well, I have not gotten the box yet nor the letter but it will come. You should get the letter within the next couple days. I know its hard-I am there with you, I have been emotional today but it will come -
