    Happy Thursday!

I know there is a PT graduation tomorrow - Bravo Zulu to all those graduating and to those that are attending - Have a great time with your Sailor!

  • MichianaMom

My son just left GC this morning; on to the next phase!
  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Yeah MichianaMom!  Welcome to Ballston Spa!  I think we have a pretty big group heading this way.....I hope everyone's ready for the cold! (That is one thing about BS that my son is not enjoying LOL!)

    Happy RED shirt Friday!

  • SlezaksMom

    Hi N4M family!!

I hear from my sailor last night and he is planning to take his boards tomorrow or Monday. He's been helping his shipmates study -- that's code for "we're all helping each other make sure we've got this stuff cold" the way they did in Power School -- and feels good about things.

He didn't get picked up for staff, but true to my sailor's optimism, he said he was good with it. What he likes about it are his friends...the Navy guys doing their thing right next to him. He's excited to get to the fleet and work with his crew.

Gotta get through boards first. So, if you're the praying kind, or candle lighting kind or just have a few extra well-wishes to spare, if you'do think of my sailor over the next couple of days, this nervous Navy mom would appreciate it.
  • bethr311

SlezaksMom, what class is your sailor in? Wishing him success!
  • SlezaksMom

    @Bethr311 - I think 1401?

He got there in November '13, but I believe he classed up in January.
  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

    Hi All - Happy Monday!

    SlezaksMom - I'm thinking his class # would be before 1401.  My son's is 1401 & he didn't start proto until 4/14/14.

Wishing all of them success!  Keep us updated ;-)

  • SlezaksMom

Well, he qualified!!! He's an official Nuke!

I'm very proud, no matter what class he's in!! (Maybe 1311?)

    Thank you ALL!!
  • Wendy4Cody

Congrats! My son is about 3 weeks away.
  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

    Bravo Zulu!

Wendy - keep us posted on when your son takes his boards.

Hello everyone. My name is Anna and my son graduated from power school on Friday. He is on his way to Ballston Spa right now. I have a few questions. How long typically do they wait to "class up" (if that's what it's called)? I hate to ask this next question, but what proportion of power school grads do not make it through prototype? He did very well at power school but it sounds like prototype is very different.
  • bethr311

Hi, Anna. If I remember right, it's usually a couple of weeks, give or take, before prototype classes start, maybe two to four. It seems like a looooooong time ago. My son's been there since late December and is just finishing up. Lord willing. As far as how many don't make it? I'd say a handful. It is hard, hard, hard, but the Navy wants them to make it. They've spent a lot getting them there.

BS should be beautiful this time of year. I was there in June and couldn't believe how green and pretty it is.
  • Penny_Nuke_MM2_NimitzNuke

I have heard of some sailors go up there and then not be able to start for months.  It all depends on the situation going on there at the time.  Just know that regardless of when it starts, they will keep him busy doing something.  And regarding how many do not make it - like it was said before, it just all depends.  There are some classes that go thru unscathed, and then there are some that get hit fairly hard.  It all depends on the individual sailors.  Some bust their butts to make sure they get thru and others struggle from day one in spite of busting their butts.  Some do so much better with book learning and others excel at the hands-on learning.  Prototype is 7 weeks of books and then the rest is hands-on and being tested over that.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

    Hi Anna and welcome!

In my sons case he arrived 1/13/14 and didn't start proto classes until 4/14/14.  He took his 50% exam in early July and as of right now still doesn't have a grad date.  Technically if everything would have been running smoothly it would have been coming up soon, but it's moved to Oct, then Nov and now maybe December!  Just depends when everything falls into place so to speak!  He started out in MARF & then they moved his class to S8G (some kind of delays but they can't really say - OPSEC). (Those are the 2 different plants in BS.)

As Penny said the first 7 weeks is books and then the hands on begins.  My son is still waiting for the hands-on to begin!

I've heard of a handful of sailors being dropped for various reasons.....I don't know what portion it is though.  Proto is a different set of challenges than A school & power school.  Before it was classroom setting - M-F pretty much 8-5.  Now it's classroom then hands-on, 7 days straight, rotating shifts with little time off in between.  The key is for them to find a balance & somehow make it work!  It can be done ;-)

Read "A Sailors Perspective of Prototype from 2009" above.  It will give you an idea of what they are going through.

Of course we will do our best to answer questions (& help to alleviate your concerns!).  The nuke mom's group is still probably the best place to get answers as there aren't a whole lot of us on this page, but there's a few of us here who can help out - Penny's son is staff so she has lots of knowledge.  There's another mom on here whose son is also staff - why am I drawing a blank on her name right now?! Oh I think it's NancyJo!  Anyhow, welcome and try not to worry and of course be prepared to hurry up & wait! LOL

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

B'sNukeMoM, I'll let you off the hook since these days I mostly lurk...I read but don't say much. Totally unlike if you knew me face to face! :^D

My son is staff at the MARF plant until December when he will finally get to his ship. What everyone has said is true, they work shifts and it's pretty wearing on them. They learn to balance work and play.

If I had one word of advice it would be to not be shy when you go after signatures in Proto. It's good if you can get a study buddy and try to work together when possible. When they start and get the book of what needs signatures it seems almost impossible but they can do it.

Hang in there, Anna. Your sailor will figure it out. And we are here for you.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Thanks for popping in NancyJo!  I knew you were around ;-)

  • Penny_Nuke_MM2_NimitzNuke

In addition to being assertive about getting signatures, as NancyJo states, the other HUGE thing is going out and getting some black out curtains for the bedroom so they can sleep in the middle of the day.  It will take a huge adjustment to getting used to sleeping all hours of the day and switching it up every 7 ish days but they really have to learn at the end of 7 days to do everything in their power to make it an environment for rest and quickly starve their bodies of sleep so when it is appropriate to sleep their bodies are ready.  Otherwise once they start up the next shift they will be behind the 8-ball and be extremely tired, irritable, irrational, and unable to concentrate on what they need to be learning.

  • 1proudmama/EM/USSLincoln/CVN72

Thanks for the tips. I did get him black out curtains right away and it is very helpful, Congrats to those that have passed their boards and are finally graduating. What a long process it has been for this group with all the shutdowns.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

  • SlezaksMom

Ok. My son's class is 1305.

I understand that things can change, but does anyone know if the graduation is Oct 24? That's the tentative date my sailor told, but he's concerned that it will change and I'll be stuck with a ticket. Any advice/thoughts/different knowledge?

    Thanks!!
  • bethr311

SlezaksMom, my son is in that class and he has not given us a grad date. Where are you coming from?
  • SlezaksMom

Bethr311 - he told me it was a tentative date. I'll be flying up from Florida and only have a shirt window to do so because of my work schedule, so I was trying to be proactive...
  • Wendy4Cody

My son is graduating Oct 24. He is class 1304.
  • SlezaksMom

Sounds like there are going to be lots of classes going at once.

    The more the merrier! :)
  • bethr311

My son passed his board this morning!! It started at 4:30 this AM, can you believe that? Still waiting to hear on a graduation date.
  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Bethr311- that's awesome! Bravo Zulu to your son!
  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

bethr311, well done for your son! I know how proud you feel. It's a long, hard road but he did it. Hooyah! Does he know what's next?

Ok, do my son just got his orders. He will be on the USS Annapolis in Groton, Ct. I'm sad be didn't get this coast, but I'm happy he will be close to my sister and her boys. At least he is in the same hemisphere as us. He mentioned possibly being transferred to Portsmouth, NH? We will see..
  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Aw Wendy - sorry he's not closer to home, but nice that your sister & her family will be close to him.  Guess you'll have to plan at trip to CT - I hear it's nice!

  • Wendy4Cody

I still have never been to Hawaii. I guess I'll have to go and not have any excuse to do it. I have only been through Ct one time. It is very nice in the Spring and fall.
  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Getting close for those of you heading to graduation on Friday!

    Pack your warm clothes!!!

  • bethr311

Hi all! Just got off the phone with my sailor. He's assigned to the USS Carl Vinson out of San Diego. May I ask please, if anyone goes to prototype graduation Friday, will they take lots of pictures? I know a lot of people can't make it. I would make it worth your while and be forever grateful!
  • 5Sailor1AirmanFam

I'll be taking my camera and will take lots of pictures! If youd like, send me your email and I'll send them to you that way.
  • Wendy4Cody

I will be there as well. Yes, I will take lots of pictures as well.
  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

beth, that's where my son is going! he won't report until Jan. They have a terrific group here on N4M, and while I do this more than Facebook, their captain posts wonderful videos and pics there so join there also. Yea!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

bethr311 - the same offer I made to Nancy Jo stands for you & your sailor.  We are just about an hour from San Diego so if your sailor ever needs anything or if you make it this way for a visit please do not hesitate to contact me!  I always love to meet other Navy Mom's ;-)

5Sailor1AirmanFam - does your sailor have orders yet?

Hope everyone has a great day!

  • SlezaksMom

So, I'm traveling today to Albany, NY, to attend the Prototyoe graduation tomorrow!! Yes, I'm very excited, but it's been rough...

I was supposed to leave yesterday, but something got messed up with my 3rd-party, cheap airfare site and agent who assisted me. The flight got booked for today instead of yesterday and I was pretty much crushed when they told me there was nothing that could happen any sooner -- even if I paid the exorbitant fees!

So, I waited and am flying today. I've got a connection in DC (now), but as I was waiting (in the front of the line!) to board, the gate agent told me that I'd have to check my bag because the zone on my ticket indicated I'd be boarding last and the flight was going to be too full for overhead baggage by the time I got on. "Oh, no! I'm going to miss it, or embarrass my kid by attending graduation in travel clothes with only purse makeup," I thought to myself...

Before I could process this, a random guy came up to me and said, "There you are! I've been waiting for you over here in priority boarding!!" He sorta moved me and my suitcase over to where his stuff was, and as the gate agent walked away he said,

"I'm James. I overheard you've been having some troubles getting to see your son graduate. My brother was Navy and I got to see him graduate in Pensacola a long time ago. I know it meant a lot to him. I can't get you there any sooner, but I can make sure you don't have to check your bag. We're together now and you can board with me when 1st class boards."

I was stunned. I'm sure I said thank you (hope I did, but it's fuzzy) and I said, "How can I repay you?" James said, "You don't have to. Tell you son I said thank you, for sure, but I want to thank you, too. It's families as well as the guys doing the job who sacrifice, too, you know?"

Well, I teared up then and am now as I type, but James made my day and I wanted to share because you all deserve a thank you, too!!
  • Wendy4Cody

I flew in to Albany at 630PM! We must have missed each other. I'm going to be there tomorrow as well. There are a couple of us who met up for Peer school graduation a year ago, so look for us. I'm wearing a black sweater with a scarf and black slacks. I'll try to message you!
    Wendy

Slezaksmom - that's awesome! Glad everything worked out. Enjoy graduation tomorrow - hugs to you & your sailor ;-)

Wendy - glad you made it there safe! Have a great time tomorrow! Hugs to you & your sailor too ;-)

  • Penny_Nuke_MM2_NimitzNuke

That made my tear ducts leak, Wendy.  I am so thankful for angels out there that are put in our path.  Enjoy your day tomorrow - I loved (and attended) both graduations up there back in 2012.

  • 5Sailor1AirmanFam

Sooo great of James to step up aND what a wonderful way to do it. So glad you'll make it as planned. See everyone there!!
  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Happy RED shirt Friday!  Can't wait to hear from everyone how graduation went.
