1proudmama/EM/S8G/1403, What is SG8? You also mentioned Marf. I don't know what that is either. I feel like I should know...
B'sNukeMoM, upstate NY will feel a little nippy for you coming from SD. Here in Indy, the low tonight will be -7. High tomorrow will be 3. Our heater can't get the temp in the house up to the temp the thermostat is set on (68 degrees), this morning we woke up to a house that was 62 degrees, with tonight's and tomorrow's even colder temp, I'm afraid how cold our house will be...
Cerise - S8G & MARF are the 2 different prototype plants. MARF stands for "modifications and additions reactor facility". You can google it and Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory. S8G stands for "submarine platform, 8th generation core, General Electric was the designer". Other than that I have no idea LOL!
This past week we had some pretty cold weather even for SoCal. I came downstairs on Saturday & it was 57*in my house!
I would love delays hoping he graduates in summer. I have a 10 and 13 year old so summer graduation would be ideal. Plus we could visit again. He started in August suppose to graduate February and yes with maintenance problems likely not happening before May. His roommate stated months after him and is art marf and will probably graduate before him. Send like graduation is every two months so 1401 January, 1402 March, 1403 May. Bnukes mom explained the difference between two plants better then I could so I'm glad she chimed in.
1proudmama - you might actually get your wish on the delays LOL! Especially S8G.....hopefully it will all work out so you can all go the graduation!
My MIL booked her flight so she's going with us to the grad. College son can't go & he's a little bummed. The only one he was able to make it to was BC...
B nukesmom your son is an EM right like my boy.,according to my ET husband and his friend that has been in for 30 years say EMs have it the easiest on the ship. They joke with my son saying oh only if we were EMs life would be so good. I don't know how much truth or just plain old riddling they are giving to my son. Hope this gives you some comfort on his decision to reenlist. Now of course they riddled how bad it was to be an mm but this is coming from a bunch of ETs revelling in their old age. :)
oh gosh insert foot in mouth. lol tried to make you feel better. Atleast hes not an MM on Sub. lol Being an MM there will be more demand for him to stay better bonus. EMs seem to reeinlist I think they even get lesser signing bonus don't know if thats because it is easier or not as good of job opportunities on outside. My husband did say ETs are in the nice a/c area MMs in the hot dirty places and EMs sleeping in the barracks. boy they must have hand picked my child for that job. This is all in fun and should be taken lightly. lol
Not at all! Taken lightly here! If I over thought this whole process, I would worry constantly! My son was trained to do his job just like all our sailors have been, and we are so lucky to be able to see humor when there are so many things we could worry about. I'm blessed to have such a great support system!
1proudmama - haha - Like Wendy said it's all taken lightly!Besides, I'm not the one that will be doing this my son will and he knows what he's getting himself into! (At least I hope he does LOL ;-)) Mine will be carrier - he got orders to the USSTruman. He doesn't want anything to do with subs! (Did I ever mention that he doesn't even like the ocean that much! Too much "scary" stuff down there.)
It's all good! Like Wendy said - we have to be able to see the humor in all of this or we would worry ourselves to death. My hair has greyed so much over the last 2 years I don't know if I can take much more!!
Wendy is your boy just graduating prototype. What sub is he going too? I have another friends soon going to Washington on USS Alabama. He picked aircraft carrier then switched to sub. My husband works at nuke plant subs do produce better workers. :-)
they will gain so much experience in the navy and have a great life in or out of it.
Ian just texts said they got a couple inches it's so cold it's probably not going anywhere. Bring your parka B or I should say buy one.
Couple inches, nothing. How about 4+ and that is just today on top of all of that they already had. Will be headed out of here tomorrow as soon as we can get packed and on the road and heading to the USS Nimitz (okay, my son is, I'm just helping drive his car across the big ole' US).
Hey Penny - Wishing you safe travels as you head out! It's too bad your son (& you) weren't there one more week. I would have loved to meet you both. That's awesome that you'll have him so close to home ;-)
There may not be much snow, but it's been cold. Here's a pic of my son and two of his roomies standing ON Saratoga Lake. So it's been cold enough to freeze the lake - at least I hope it's solid! My son is the one with the life jacket on - I guess he will make a good Sailor - always being prepared!
brr I'm cold just looking at those pictures. We are suppose to get snow starting in morning very minimal amounts and the first flake isn't suppose to fall until the morning and here in Virginia they are closing schools already. Last year we had a total of 13 inches for the whole year and missed 13 days of school. No bread milk eggs in store
OMG Cerise - that's not what I want to hear! Hubby has assured me that it's going to warm up some before we head that way next week......I know our sailor is sooooo looking forward to getting back to sunny CA for a bit. (Too bad it isn't for a longer period of time - sigh).
B'sNukeMom we had cold weather here in Michigan this morning too (-3), but it's supposed to be 37 on Saturday. I think the warm up WILL hit NY next week. Sunshine is headed that way!
Just got a text from my son - he thinks the graduation will be at the Milton Community Center from 0800-1000. I know it's been held there in the past (I think that's where Patti P & Laura's son had theirs a year ago!).
Address is 310 Northline Road, Ballston Spa.
MichianaMom - brrrrrrr! That's about all I can say - brrrrrr!!!
see B another reason I want delays graduation in the summer sounds better and better every day. I told my son if you graduate in winter I'll have to think about if I'll attend I don't go north in winter. You being from cali are a much better mom then me. hands down
I just looked at my weather app for saratoga springs you get in on the 23rd right? heres a hint for the high 3 degrees warmer then the day you arrive. lows in the teens. NY welcomes you!
We actually get in at midnight on the 21st. Sailor called me yesterday afternoon and he said it was 10*. He's just laughing at me.....says I'm not gonna survive. Thank goodness we don't stay too long! I thought it was cold enough when we visited him last April.
My son sent me a picture yesterday of the snow. The caption said This stuff never melts. That is the big difference between Va. And NY if it snows here you better get out and play in it right away cause its usually just a muddy mess the next day. He said its getting old but still prefers the cold then the heat and humidity of SC. He takes after his father I hate the cold. One time my husband was contemplating Wisconsin for a job. I said well you better be getting a good raise cause the girls and I will be staying here Ian on the other hand wanted to go.
Managed to squeak out some more info, re. the 50% test. Son says that out of 30 only 4 passed all parts of the test. The good news, nobody failed. He failed one part, but since it wasn't one that was crucial for his specialty it wasn't bad. Apparently the ones who failed a part that was crucial to their specialty got yelled at. But again, nobody totally failed, they just had to go and get "sign-offs". I don't totally understand the system, but as long as the Navy and sailors do, all's good. :-)
He doesn't seem to know a graduation date. Does anybody here have a sailor in class 1404 (he used to be 1403 but now is 1404) and have a graduation date, even if tentative?
I guess Jul my for graduation if he's st SG8 if at marf plant probably May but way less sure about marf plant. My Reasoning 1401 January, 1402 March, 1403 May 1404 July. They seem to be graduating every two months if I recall correctly if this hold true there you go. My observation also seems they are happening at end off month also. Anyone else want to chime in?
1proudmama - your reasoning sounds about right for the graduations.....of course the unknown is the "unscheduled" maintenance that seems to pop up! Our son didn't start giving us a somewhat firm grad date until early December. Prior to that it was anyone's guess. It originally started out as a Sept grad date....then it just kept moving LOL.
Happy Wednesday! So excited as we head out to NY this afternoon!!!! Can't wait to see my son ;-)
Want to wish safe travels to all heading to GC for Power School grad and to those heading to NY for prototype grad. HOOYAH!! Looking forward to meeting a great group of mom's that I've been communicating with.
I won't be commenting much in the next couple of days (hard to do on my phone!) but I will be checking in.
Next 4 days Ballston Spa could get over a foot of snow. Boy Spring can't come soon enough for my boy. He is tired of all the snow and cold. Although he prefers it over to the heat and humidity of Charleston. I dislike both equally.
As a mom of a Nuke grad, hang in there parents! Send lots of brain food to them (jerky, trail mix, and anything they can grab and go)! This is a tough but rewarding program for the sailors, no matter where they land. Ballston Doabis a great little town to visit. There is a wonderful tea house right across from the park, and I suggest checking out the old town square area! Good food and fun shops!
Good luck to your son Kimberly! My son just finished up in BS (spent 13 months there with delays LOL!). He wasn't a big fan of the snow but overall he enjoyed BS. And prototype was his favorite of all the schools. We made it to NY twice (once at Easter & again for graduation in January). Like Wendy said, nice town to visit. Downtown BS & Saratoga Springs are both nice places. In the summertime they have the horse races. Good restaurants too - my son's favorite breakfast place was the Iron Roost in BS. He took us there both times we visited - I highly recommend it. And lots of history in the area too.
We are winding down on his leave - he heads to VA next week.....
I passed the restaurant names especially the Iron Roost to my son. When he was in Charleston he had a favorite place that he and his friends went to during power school and took us there to meet the owners that knew him by name and being 6'2" they loved his hardy appetite. He is going to check out the Iron Roost. He is going to try snowboarding or skiing this weekend if weather permits. Over 3 feet of snow on the ground and it just keeps coming and not melting. Very pretty area hoping he doesn't graduate till May when its the perfect time to visit.
1proudmama - if they like Italian food we also went to Augies - family style service. Great food (and plenty of it!). Druthers Brewing Co is another good place (my hubby sampled some nice IPA's there!). A really good sandwich place is Putnam Market....If they want a nice steak place try Jacob & Anthony's. We went there after graduation.
There's a lot of nice places - I'm sure they'll find them!
I was just going to post about Auggies! We loved it. It is walking distance to the little tea house, I think called the Whistling Kettle. The brew was good too! I wish my sailor was still there. It was so fun to visit.
Loved going to that tea house with you Wendy!! I'm still drinking the tea we bought there! Hope you're doing well!
Everyone should try that place in town on the square! Yummy lunch and a huge selection of fabulous teas!!
Paddy's ship just returned from a short deployment and are readying for another longer one. He's enjoying it so far!
Cody is back from his first as well. Not sure of much else right now. I fell in love with that tea house and plan to order some more when I get settled in the new house.
Give him a hug from me, and you too!
