I just got back from a craft fair called Penns Colony. One of the vendors had pillowcase for sale. Frankly, ours looked nicer, but I'm partial to ours. They were selling the pcs for $8.50 or $9.00.
  • Sue-Pillowcase lady

Lyn, that is a high compliment.  And now we have an idea of the $ value of the pcs.  But  a gift from the heart is priceless.  Were they selling.

Thanks for letting me know Ally.  I just mailed off 2  boxes, each 18 or more pounds.

    check out the new numbers.

I didn't ask if the pcs were selling. The fair was very crowded,so we kept moving. It even stopped raining long enough for us to enjoy the afternoon.

    Ladies,

I have a prayer request, Im not sure if everyone knows that Florence McSween was back in the hospital. Every since her accident back in May she has had a lot of problems with her left ankle. About 3 years ago she feel and almost broke her foot totally off. They put screws, pins and a plate in it and it was doing fine. Im May of this year she had a roll over accident and in that same foot the pins  shifted and she had to have them removed. She was doing good from that surgery and in the proccess of healing she got an infection at the plate and in the bone. The ankle healed incorrectly and they sent her to the hospital 3 weeks ago and took out the plate and clean as much as they could. She has a staph infection in the ankle and bone. She is now in a rehab and is in a lot of pain and they are giving her strong antibiotics and if they don't work soon they will have to take the foot and leg just below the knee. She is trying to stay in good spirits and not think about the what if's. I talk to her every day and try to get her laughing. If anyone would like to send a card or something to keep her busy that would greatly help. Please email me for the information At: mepeller@bellsouth.net.

Please pass this on to your prayer chains and friend she need the prayers most of all.

    Thank you Maryellen..

  • Sue-Pillowcase lady

got this from my friend Pat this morning:

Please pray for Will's surgery tomorrow. He has to have his port
replaced. The one he has in now is not functioning properly. They
could always "flush" the tubing inside the port, but have had
difficulty getting blood to flow out of it. They did a dye test and
determined the tubing is lying up against the blood vessel instead of
free flowing inside it. His surgery is scheduled for 9:30. He will be
sore for a while after this. Then starting this week, he has to go
back to the outpatient clinic every Thursday and Friday for the next 6
months to get his blood drawn to check his counts and to get a shot in
his leg. I'll tell you what, I can't imagine an adult having to go
through all that he has gone through let alone being an 8 yr old
having to endure it. He is one heck of a brave kid, that's for sure.

Welcome to Crisx5!  We are glad to have you join us!

Saw a young lady at church yesterday who moved away about 10 years ago.  She is now married to a soldier who has deployed 3 times.  And she is the head of an FRG at their  army base.  She said that there had been a recent deployment.  I asked how many.  She said about 10,000!  I gulped and said
    "are you serious?"

anyway, I told her that we take the units 1 at a time.  So she'll be in touch.

That fabric donation came at the right time!

    have a great day ladies!

  • Sue-Pillowcase lady

have a good day ladies!  please pray for little Will today.
  • Sue-Pillowcase lady

Welcome to ktssong, our newest member.  So glad to have you join us.

    I'll follow up about Will.

  • Sue-Pillowcase lady

the 1st person to receive some fabric got a box that weighed 18 pounds and she measured 63 yards.

    I can pack a box.

  • quiltblue

Okay Sue, send me a box! I like the value of that! Yes, I will send you an email with my address etc. ;o)
  • Sue-Pillowcase lady

great quilt. I do need to clarify that she got an avon box, but I can still get alot in a large Flat rate box.
  • Maryellen

Quilt when you get a box from Sue watch out, they pop open when you cut the tape. She knows how to stuff a box and get her bang for a buck LOL
  • quiltblue

My son graduates tomorrow from his A school, we cannot attend. So very proud of him! I teased him and said that I will have to start stockpiling pillowcases over the next year, so I can supply his 1st submarine! He laughed and smiled (Skype). I asked him if he had washed his pillowcase and he said no, cause it wouldn't smell like home anymore if he did. I suggested that he buy the same laundry soap that I use and he so "Oh, I didn't think about doing that"! Hahaha
  • Maryellen

Quiltblue, I send my daughter 2 boxes of Snuggle fabric softner sheets, when she got the box she was walking back to her birthing smelling the box. She got stopped by a LPO on the ship and asked what was in the box and why she was smelling it. he asked he if there was something in the box that she should have and she told no sir it is fabric softner sheets and it smells like home, she even offered to let him open it and he let her go and she said he told her there is nothing like the smell of home.
  • LLovesmysailor

quiltblue, God bless him if he can keep that pillowcase smelling like home once he gets to a sub. There is nothing worse than the smell of a submarine. The first time my son came home, I made him leave his laundry on the porch. It took 3 days before I would even allow it into the house. Then I washed everything 4 times before it lost that sub smell. Nasty smell!

I asked him what the guys did with the pcs we made for Miami's homecoming. He said all the guys kept them well away from the sub. They liked them so much they couldn't stand the thought of them getting that sub smell all over them.

But, then your sailor is a nuke ET (like mine) so he won't get to his sub for another 18 months.

  • Sue-Pillowcase lady

Lyn, what is the smell?  body odor, fuel etc?  That is interesting that the guys didn't want the pcs on the sub.  I guess it's a good thing they got them when they got home then.

cute story ME about the smelling the box.

I;m sorry that you can't attend the school graduation.  We didn't either so many years ago.

and ME, thanks for the good endorsement. haha.

Earlier this year someone donated a huge box of fancy line napkins to HAE for the pcs.  They weren't going to work for that, but this summer we used many of the colored ones for VBS at church.

BUT, I kept all of the white ones.  And they are nice embossed fabric.  Did you all know that September is National Sewing Month?

So that said, yesterday I used the white ones in my craft time in the after school program.  I let the kids make "quilt squares" but the napkins are so big, some of the little kinders said "I'm going to use this as a blanket".

Anyway, it was so much fun to watch them create a design.  It reminded me of the kids making the pcs for the Bush.   So ME, if Gary ever wants to donate pcs again, I would definitely take some for the kids to decorate.  I was quite impressed with some of the designs.

We used stamps and free drawing.  Does anyone know if there are permanent stamp pads?  We used a washable one so I know that won't work.

  • LLovesmysailor

No Sue, it isn't body odor. In fact, since they make their own fresh water, they are not under the usual shower restrictions that other ships have. The smell is from a chemical that they use in the scrubbers. That is the unit that takes the CO2 out of the air on the sub while they are submerged. Alex swears that it eats cotton fabric, but I think its just the smell he hates. He says they don't even notice it after a while. That is until they get to port and smell actual fresh air!
  • quiltblue

Met a younger lady a couple of months ago who said her Daddy was on the Trident for it's Maiden year long voyage (right after Vietnam I think she said... I don't think they stay down that long anymore) and she said that his odor was so bad that he and their Mom slept in the backyard in a tent.  Plus he couldn't stand being indoors... for almost 6 months! She said that her Mom made sure that she bathed after *** immediately (wink wink) and that the smell transferred to their mattress that when it got really cold outside and they needed to move back into the house, Mom went and bought a new mattress! The old one went into the garage for next deployment. I told Sam that I will make him as many pillowcases as he wants!
  • quiltblue

My young friend graduated from BC today and was given his pillowcase by his Mom!  He was really excited to get it she said!

  • DC - G'mother of My Fav Sailor

Maryellen, sending fabric softener is a great idea if you know that the recipient will welcome it.  My G'daughter's boyfriend is very allergic to all types of fragrances. My husband is as well.  I have to always make sure that I use a fragrance-free detergent and dryer sheet or it really stirs up allergies.

Now if the sailor is not allergic, then it does remind one of home!

  • LLovesmysailor

Sue, The check is in the mail for the fabric.
  • quiltblue

Mine is getting dropped at the post office in the morning!
  • Maryellen

DC, she told me today that the whole birthing smells like Snuggles and everyone has been asking her for a fabric softner sheet to put in their racks to make them smell good. So the girls are going to send me money to buy them several boxes of them so they can use them as air fresheners in the Birthing.
  • Sue-Pillowcase lady

I boxed up some tonight that will be mailed tomorrow.  I am using the other ladies too plus some from the teacher.  Yikes, I have fabric!  and that's a good thing.

What a wildly busy day at kinderland today.  Made apple sauce with the kinders and they were just awed by the "apple, peeler, corer, slicer".  I get such a kick out of them, well most of the time anyway.  haha.

My son worked in our backyard all day.  I am amazed at what he did.

handsome young man quilt.  And thanks ladies for taking some fabric!

  • Sue-Pillowcase lady

Mornin' ladies!  forgot to tell you this.  Because of the napkin/lap quilt project at CARE this week, a mom asked where I got them.  So I explained about HAE.  She said I have fabric!  I said "can I use if for pcs if it works for that?"  She said "yes!"

    love it.

  • Maryellen

Boy Sue God is blessing us, he knows we need the fabric and if everyone sends you money to ship we can get them made. I can't wait till Monday when my box gets here and I can watch it pop open. Christmas in October !!! :-)
  • Sue-Pillowcase lady

yes I agree Maryellen.  And for the most part, this stuff is really nice quality.  It has been fun to go thru it cause I have used some of it myself for aprons and microwave potholders over the years.

Treasures.  I just love to get stuff that people no longer want!

And just in time for your birthday too.

Hey, Happy October all!  I just realized that it is here.

  • Maryellen

Hey sue, who has a birthday this month not me Im skipping it this year HA HA AH
  • LLovesmysailor

Hi everyone. Hope you are all having a good weekend.

Now that its October (and only 46 degrees here in the Burgh), I thought it was a good time to mention the annual scarf project. If its 46 degrees here it will be even colder in the mountains of Afghanistan. So, if we can find a group who can use them, do you want to make scarfs for Christmas mailing? They would need to be mailed by the end of Nov. so we do have some time to work on them.

  • Paymaster

LL....Let me know if you find a group that can use Scarf's.  I have a group of mom's that I think would like together and make them as a project.

Birdie....Anyone in your group that can use scarf's?

  • Sue-Pillowcase lady

let's just plan on making them and we'll find a group.  I'm checking with m's mom to see if the marines will still be there.  And I am working on an army unit that just deployed.

ME, whyyyyyy are you skipping this one?  haha.

  • LLovesmysailor

If anyone needs the instructions for the scarfs, I'll list it in a discussion above.  They can be knitted, crocheted, or no sew fleece.
  • Sue-Pillowcase lady

Lyn, that would be a good idea.  I thought we had a thread for that, but just looked and we don't.  And the specific colors that can be used.  Do you still have the photo of you or the varigaeted scarf that you made?

heard from the same woman who got 63 yards.  She got a "bonus" box as well and that held 25 yards!  So 88 yards of fabric for $28 is pretty good.

  • Maryellen

Sue, I don't feel like getting older and this one is a big one and I just am not in to turning that old. It has been a hard year and I guess I just don't feel like celabrating anything this year. With my knee and everything else I think I will just stay 29 1 more year, HAHAHA
  • Sue-Pillowcase lady

works for me.  I should have thought of that 9 years ago.  haha.  how is the knee?
  • Maryellen

Well I had a 3 shots and not much change, I have my good days and my really bad days.  I go back to the doctors on the 10th and then we will find out more. I want so bad to get up and just go for a long walk and can't and that gets me down some days. But I keep busy so Its a good thing.
  • Dawn L.

Hi! The Navy has a birthday on October 13. About the scarfs, we have a cousin that is in the Navy that is Afghanistan right now. Sue I have Ethan's address. I will email it to you. I don't know which division it is offhand, but I'll give it to you.
  • Sue-Pillowcase lady

thanks Dawn.  I got the address,.  do you have an email contact for him?

Stay busy and look for a box tomorrow!  that will really keep you busy ME.

  • Sue-Pillowcase lady

Welcome to Er etc!  Sorry, I already forgot the rest of the letters.  But we are happy to have you join us!   And I shorten just about everything.
  • Sue-Pillowcase lady

took a class tonight on how to gently restrain a child.  WOW, that is some good information to know.

The instructor said to practice so I  tried it out on my husband when I got home and I thought he was going to break my arm trying to get out of it!  I'll stick to kids.   haha.  I hope I never have to use it.

  • LLovesmysailor

I just got back from JoAnn's. If anyone is interested in knitting or crotcheting scarfs, have wool yarn on sale. The yarn is $5.99 for one and you get 50% off the second skein. You only need one skein because these are 210 yds each.
  • Sue-Pillowcase lady

that's a good price, but I am allergic to wool.  It makes my palms peel.  Crazy.
  • LLovesmysailor

Ya, the last time I used wool, I ended up using latex gloves. But the wool I bought today is very soft and doesn't seen to be causing me any problem. I think they left in more of the lanolin. It comes from Turkey and they make a much softer wool yarn with a lot of the lanolin still in it.
  • Dawn L.

I'm knitting a baby sweater for Ben's friend Megan. I've never met Megan but I've talked to her. She's from Cinncinatti and is stationed in San Diego. If I knit, I only do small projects. It makes me feel like I've accomplished something. When I do knit, it is usually a gift for someone, never for myself.
  • Maryellen

@Dawn, did you know the Navy and I have the same Birthday but they are much older than I am. LOL
  • Paymaster

Dawn.....I do the same thing with quilting.  Take on small projects so I feel like I have accomplished something:)
  • quiltblue

    Small projects... like pillowcases! Yay!

I can only crochet one pattern, I'll have to see if I have any yarn to make a few scarves.

  • LLovesmysailor

I also only do small projects. Knitting that is, because wedding dresses don't count as small projects. But that is why I love doing the scarfs. Its just a long skinny knit both sides project. The fleece ones are just cutting long strips and trimming the ends.

I do have some Baby Alpaca that I keep promising myself I will knit into a sweater someday. Someday!!!!!!
