My son's sub, the USS Miami, caught fire tonight while in dry dock. Fortunately the crew are all OK. I'm still waiting to hear from my son. Last time I heard from him, they were fighting the fire. Apparently, some of the fire fighters were injured.

  • Sue-Pillowcase lady

Lyn, praying for the sub's crew.  anymore news?

Thanks you Terry.  It is definitely a team effort.  I just posted some new numbers.

School is out!  woohoo!  2 more days at CARE and then I am done for a bit.

  • LLovesmysailor

They fought the fire from 5:40pm until 4 am this morning. A total of 7 were injured, 5 firefighters and 2 sailors. But none seriously and they are all home or back at the sub. My son posted on his facebook page that he is OK. I will probably hear from him after he gets some sleep.

Never know who you are going to run into.  I am at the airport with my husband on Friday as we were flying to see our Navy son, and I hear this voice saying "I know you".  I turn to look and its Birdie? She was  flying to see her Navy family.  You just never know who you will run into at the airport:)

  • LLovesmysailor

I just heard from Alex. Three days from his terminal leave they frocked Alex to Petty Officer 1st class. He is really happy that he made it before he leaves the Navy.

  • Sue-Pillowcase lady

Congrats to Alex!  I didn't realize that he was leaving the Navy and how exciting to receive that promotion before he left!

Paymaster, it truly is a small world.

Looks like I have an issue with the Playlist.  Will have to work on it.

Had my MRI on Tuesday.  I got to view the machine and it was 100% different than the one that I was in years ago, so I was able to do it without sedation.  Got the results yesterday and it is as I suspected.  Some narrowing and pinching.  I need to review in detail, then determine what course of action that I want to take.  She has recommended PT and now that school is out,  I would have the time.

ME, did you get the new yet that you have a PO3 in your family?

My son started a new job last week and he is so happy doing it.  He is doing much of what he did in the Navy,

  • Sue-Pillowcase lady

and it has topped out at 107 today!  YIKES, but it is a dry heat haha.

  • Sue-Pillowcase lady

Well, I thought that I fixed the playlist, but guess not.

My problem is the lumbar spine.  I have a mild curve to it and I fell 2 times last year, plus tripped once at work and stood alot.  All combined equals pain especially if I stand too long.

1 of the vertebrae at the curve has protruded out and the ortho doc wanted an MRI to see about compressed discs at the other end.  There is some.  I too have to decide on the PT, cost etc.  Need to do a bit of research on it.

And my right thumb is better!   I have postponed the surgery until July and really believe that I won't pursue that either.

  • Maryellen

Please pray for my dad Orville.  He had a pacemaker put in yesterday afternoon as an emergency situation.  My sister had gone out, came home and found him curled into a fetal position and got him to the hospital.  The docs put a temporary one in at the ER and then took him upstairs to put in a permanent one.  His heart was only doing 20 beats per minute.  Barb said that his color looked so much better when she left last night.

Lyn, have you had Mother's Day yet?  I keep forgetting to ask.

  • LLovesmysailor

I just got a great thankyou note from one of our Marines.

I ‘m a Marine who is deployed out in Afghanistan with CLB-4. I recently received the very nice pillowcase that you made. I just wanted to make sure that I said Thank you for taking the time and effort for sending the pillowcase. To the personnel who are deployed it really means a lot to receive something  like this. The smallest things helps boost morale and Navy Moms’ are doing a great job at that. Please keep sending the continuous prayers. Once, again thank you and Semper Fi.

Alex returned home safe and sound. I've just been so busy enjoying some time with him, that I haven't had time to get on line.

Now that he's home, he's been sharing the stories about the fire on the Miami. I'm just glad that he's here in front of me while he's telling me about the fire. I can see for myself that he is OK.

Sue, I hope your Dad does well with his pacemaker. I'll keep him in my prayers.

  • Sue-Pillowcase lady

Great thank you  note Lyn!  thanks for posting and I'll put a copy in that thread.

So glad that Alex got home.  I didn't want to ask that outright, so asked in a round about way.

Got 9 aprons made for the start of VBS tonight.  I needed 10, but the 10th is for me and I have one I can use.  I was so tired of making them!

heard from my sister and he is supposed to come home today at 6pm, which is right now as they are 2 hours ahead of  us.  If you would like to mail him a card, let me know.

  • Maryellen

  • Sue-Pillowcase lady

Very cool photo Maryellen!  Is that the captain of the ship?

I met his young man today because he wanted to give me a flag that was flown in a special ops flight in Afghanistan recently.  I got his name from a Curves member.

  • Sue-Pillowcase lady

And I never realized how much Dani looks like you Maryellen.  this photo really shows it.

  • Maryellen

They had alot of fun.  How are you all?  Still very hot here!

  • Barb (Proud KS Navy Mom)

Thanks Sue! I saw this Group on a mutual friends page and quickly joined so I wouldn't forget where I saw it! Ha! I love this idea and knew it was right up my alley! My son just left 2 weeks ago for BC and I am consumed with communication (or the lack there of!) right now. As soon as I settle down a bit, I will be dusting off the sewing machine and getting busy!

  • Sue-Pillowcase lady

Ah, the boot camp days.  We can all relate to that and the wait for communication.

I used my son's cell phone while he was gone and it was my 1st experience having one.  So I am driving home from a Red Hat luncheon and the phone rings.  I answered and it was my son!  I was so flustered and excited  that I pulled off the road into a parking lot so I could really "savor" his phone call.

MY, it was so good to hear his voice!  So be paitent mom, the call will come.

We will look forward to your help.

  • Sue-Pillowcase lady

    Mornin' all.

This is the week for mailing to the 510th.  I mailed some pcs to a spec ops group last week, will post some photos once I download.

Saw a retina specialist yesterday as I have been having a couple of eye issues. He fussed at me for not seeking medical attention sooner.  The left eye started in Dec and the other on May 6th.  He said that some gel had come off the retina and I "dodged a bullet" because by not having my eyes checked right away, I could have had some damage that would require surgery.  The left eye is probably no longer an issue, but he still has concerns for the right.  I have to go back in Sept for another check up.

He said to pass the word:  IF you have a bright flash of light followed by a light spray as if rice was thrown at you, seek medical attention immediately.  That means the retina has detached.   Neither of my issue were like that, much more sublte, but I got the message-don't fool around with your eyes!

    Welcome to Dawn L!

Have some more training today for my afternoon job.  Been busy resting haha.

Actually, yesterday I tackled the 3 boxes of pcs that have come in from the QM.  Got 1/2 of them labeled and in the bin ready to be mailed.  Over 600 have come in from that pc challenge in Feb.  I quit counting after that.

Have been getting some special order aprons made and it feels great to be sewing again.

Have an awesome day ladies.  Hope you all are resting, traveling and/or sewing.

  • DC - G'mother of My Fav Sailor

DH had a detached retina following cataract surgery.  He did not realize that could be a side effect.  He had gone to the eye doctor because of increased floaters after the surgery and was told that was "old age."  Nope, another sign of a detached retina.  Then we were on the plane returning to Florida when he commented that his vision had just narrowed like he was looking though a tunnel.  He returned to the eye doctor, who said, "uh-oh," and sent him back to the surgeon.  Another "Uh-oh!" and off to a retina specialist.  He had surgery immediately to put a band around the eye.  A week later, it detached again ... more surgery.  This time they replaced the fluid in his eye with oil.  That remained for six months.  When they removed it, the retina specialist used a laser to "tack" down the retina.  DH asked about losing sight where the tacks were.  The specialist said he was trying to do it in non essential places.

Bottom line, listen to Sue and get your eyes checked if anything is not "right."  If you suddenly have new floaters, ask about them.  Ask if they could be a sign the retina is detaching.

  • phoebe stg2

OK Ya'll, This is my story about eyes...

We have glaucoma, cataracts, and Pseudoextoliation syndrome running, NO galloping in my family ...

Needless to say I have issues...

Please see more than one eye doctor. Do not think that your doc of many years knows best. My mother is blind because her doc did not recommend further research before the second cataract surgery. Her Pseudoexfoliation caused her surgery for cataracts to go bad both times. I see my eye doc two or more times a year. PLEASE know your family history, so important! I tell everyone in my family no matter how extended all about my mothers story. Please don't put it off any longer. SEE YOUR EYE DOC...
