I'm so glad I found this group!  I love to sew and have plenty of fabric on hand.  I'm a very visual learner, so a question about the bands.  do they go all around or are just on one side with the print fabric and solid on the back?  I know it sounds dumb, but I have to look at the finished product and then I can do my thing!

  • Helen, T-man's mom

    Thanks Terry ~

  • Sue-Pillowcase lady

Welcome to Helen!  I missed you when you joined recently, my apologies!

Glad to have you join us and glad that you love to sew!  We are working on the USS Nimitz right now, in fact mailing began this week.

I have made some just like you describe.  If I have a cool piece and the band only fits one side, then that's what I do.  We are pretty creative here.  If you piece some, please let the back a solid so there is a smooth piece to sleep on.

It was not a dumb question.  You go for it.

1 more work day at CARE tomorrow!  woohoo!

  • Jodi-alumni Ship 4

Helen, if you are a visual person like I am there are several really good YouTube videos showing how to make the pillowcase using the tube method. Just type in pillowcase tutorial and select one. I've watched several and they are all good.

  • Sue-Pillowcase lady

good idea Jodi.  Helen, I am also a visual learner.  pm me your email address and I'll send you some of my "demo" photos.  perhaps that will help.

  • Sue-Pillowcase lady

I am sooooo happy that school is done!  haha

Welcome to Irene, we are happy to have you join us!  Helen, photos were sent and Irene, I'll mail them to you as well.  thanks!

this is beautiful.  Look for the 3 Huey helos in a line at about the 2.5 minute mark.  A crew member of HAE is in the lead helo.

check out the photos in the Nimitz thread!

I have a prayer request, My father in-law is in the hospital. He will be moved to a nursing home on Monday or Tuesday. My MIL has been taking care of him at home and he is getting weaker and can hardly stand up. She is tired and needs to rest. Please keep them in your prayers, her for the strength to keep going and him that he will go to the nursing home and do his rehab to strengthen his legs. They are in Hinesville GA, he is retired Army and with the new cuts in the retired Tricare it is a hardship for them. I will keep you posted as I find out more. I just wish I could go and help her but Im on Doctors orders NO Traveling.

  • Sue-Pillowcase lady

will pray for them.  getting old is so hard and the caretaker has a hard job.

and you pay attention to the doc!

  • Maryellen

Thanks Sue, my MIL has been doing it now for 8 years and its hard.

Oh Don't worry, what they doc wants the doc gets, Im not even going to try anything stupid. Plus the fact my best friend and my husband like to take my car keys. Little do they know I have the spare, but won't use it.

  • Sue-Pillowcase lady

Mornin!   What an adventure I had this past week!  I babysat at my home for 2 little girls that I know from school, ages 5 and 7!  Oh my, they did keep me busy and we made lots of crafts from my stash of recycled treasures.  I don't throw much out, instead I look at "trash" and think "what could I make out of this? or what do I see?"

I am adding the Nimitz numbers in as we mail each wave, so check out those numbers!  2 away from 30,000 pillowcases crew!  AWESOME and mind boggling to me.

Remember, when I start doing this in June 2008, I was just a Navy mom who wanted to make a few pillowcases.  And I am still that person, but you have stepped up to help me accomplish a tremendous job!  Thank you!

  • Maryellen

Sue, Make that number 30,001. I mailed 3 to my nephew and his bunk mates in NC. There are on hold there for medical reasons. Ladies You are all Awesome, and to just think this group started over moldie peach muffins.

  • Sue-Pillowcase lady

WOW, over 30,000!  I am blessed!  Never did I dream this would be so successful and so many would help!   And here, I thought the pillowcases were a frivolous item waaaaay back in Jan 2009.  haha

yep, those peach muffins should be in the hall of fame!  will add in and change!

  • Irene(ship03 div 076)

Ironing material and getting ready to cut it to make my first pillowcases. So very excited about this adventure. I love sewing and use it as a stress reliever after work. I am a preschool teacher with 15 almost3 year old so even though I love my job somedays I have a lot of stress to work out.
  • Sue-Pillowcase lady

Wonderful Irene!   glad to hear that sewing is a stress reliever for you!  It is fun to watch something take shape.

I can relate to your job.  I work at an elementary school, but with kinders in the morning and the 3,4,5 graders in the afternoon.  3 year olds are sure interesting and can keep you hopping!

  • Sue-Pillowcase lady

Welcome to Dana, David's Mom!   A USS Nimitz mom!  I don't know if we have any other Nimitz moms, but we could sure use your help!

  • Sue-Pillowcase lady

It's Monday morning and I am not getting ready for school or kids!  I'm not sure what to do with myself!  just kidding.

actually, I cut out a bunch of pcs on Saturday and I plan to sew today.  AND not go anywhere!  love the home time, which I don't get often,

Happy sewing.  We are mailing wave 2 to the Nimitz this week and as always, could use your help!

  • Sue-Pillowcase lady

posted some new photos in the Nimitz.  Have gotten some pc sewing and mending done so far this week!  feels good!

  • Sue-Pillowcase lady

    Thank you!

  • Sue-Pillowcase lady

Welcome to Christina!  Who has a handsome sailor!

  • Maryellen

Julie, sport teams are the best kinds, they just love them. When we did the Bush in 2010 I had 1 sports pillowcase that 2 guys were actually bidding on and when all was said and done we were up to $30.00 so the guy who won went to give me the money and I told him just to keep his money. That was the best time we had was to watch these 2 grown men bid on a pillowcase.

  • Sue-Pillowcase lady

Welcome to Julie!  Happy to hear that you got your other business out of the way!

Congrats on the youngest graduating!  That is an awesome feat!  I felt like I had graduated along with my son.

Sports teams are great and in fact I mailed a Colts one to the Nimitz today.

Wonderful story Maryellen!  Wish I had seen that!

Check out the new numbers!  I also mailed some to an army unit today as well,.

  • Sue-Pillowcase lady

I got 9 adult aprons made in 3 days and now I can get back to the pillowcases!

I am the VBS craft lady at my church and I make my crew an apron every year that matches the theme.  They get to keep them at the end of the summer.

    Happy sewing!

  • Sue-Pillowcase lady

Hello ADN-good to hear from you and yes, it is a big project.  The 3rd time is a charm so the saying goes.  Doing it by departments is the way to break it down into manageable bites!

Yes, I do know that about your family and we were blessed to serve them and you in this small way.

Thank you in advance for whenever a donation for shipping is possible.

AND Happy Father's Day to all of the dads out there!

I added in the 3rd wave which is now done.  We have a 4th wave coming up next week.  If you haven't sewn any pcs for awhile we could probably finish the ship with your help.

  • Dawn

  • Sue-Pillowcase lady

I must say this Nimitz project is going amazingly smooth!  Doing it by small groups is just what way to take on a carrier!  So thankful this command came on board

    with our plan!

  • Maryellen

You tell your son from All of us here at HAE, it is hime we need to thank, for his service and commetment to protect us here at home. He is more than welcome from all of us.

Thank you to Lynda Luiten and her staff for making this possible!
