Hello. My daughter has just been assigned to Rota. She's a HM, 18 years old and never been out of the country. Can anyone tell me what all she can expect? Thank you!!
  • Wanda (HN Rota, Spain)

wlbradford: My son arrived there last Wednesday and he is very excited about the place, he is an HN.  I think it is one of the best places to be stationed. Hope all goes well for your daughter.

  • wlbradford (Rota Spain)

Thanks Wanda. So far, she's loving it! Did your son just graduate A school as well?
  • Wanda (HN Rota, Spain)

wlbradford, yes he did on Jan 31. How about your daughter?

  • wlbradford (Rota Spain)

Yes, January 24th. She's a hospital corpsman. What does your son do?
  • Wanda (HN Rota, Spain)

Same thing, hospital corpsman, pretty sure they know each other.

  • wlbradford (Rota Spain)

You know what, I think you're right!

Hi Carol! I'm familiar with Voxer, my daughter and I both have iPhones. But doesn't that use her data plan? We were told that anything using her data plan would be very expensive while she's in Spain. Our carrier is AT&T and I'm really surprised and upset that they don't offer our military serving abroad any kind of special rates. Thank you for the info. And tell your son THANK YOU for his service!!

Hi all our sailor Stephen is leaving for Rota June 5.  He has been stationed in

California for 2 years.  We are from the Florida Keys.  I hear it's a great base.

I was reading the discussions about accounts for Iphones. We will look into it.

  • wlbradford (Rota Spain)

Hi Janie. My daughter has been in Spain since late January. She loves it!! As far as the iPhone, she downloaded a free texting app and we use it since she now has wifi in her room. We also Skype and use Voxer. All are very good communication tools but tell your sailor not to put off getting wifi like she did. LOL
  • wlbradford (Rota Spain)

Wow...congrats to your Marine and your sailor for his move to Spain. My daughter is also a Corpman. She works in the hospital on base. She loves it. The base, the people, the atmosphere. All of it!
  • janieflorida

Wow two in the military, I know you are proud.  I keep hearing how nice the base is.  Stephen is a Master at Arms, and takes 2-3 courses a semester at City College of San Francisco.  I understand there are college courses on the base also. We hope to go and visit next year. Thanks for all the info.  Lots of rain here today

We're going in June. After long searches, we found it a lot cheaper to fly into Madrid. Our daughter is going to meet us there and then after a few days in Madrid, we'll fly to Jerez. Flying into Rota was completely out of the question!
  • janieflorida

I've done some searching as well and it does seem like Madrid is the best bet. Are you going to visit the base??  The southern spanish coast is supposed to be beautiful

  • wlbradford (Rota Spain)

We're going to TRY and visit the base...I'm not sure what the rules are on that, so that's why I say we're going to try. From everything I've seen on the internet, and from what my daughter says, it is very beautiful. And the time of year we're going, there will be lots of people so it should be a really fun trip!

Stephen has been in Rota now for 7 weeks.  He expects to re start college within a month.  I think he is adapting to living abroad, he says definetly not the USA.

The pictures he sent are beautiful, full of history and culture.

  • wlbradford (Rota Spain)

He'll get in the swing of things really fast. Most of them do. Rota is a really fun place for the young sailors. Lots to do. My daughter has been over there since February and absolutely loves it!

  • Wanda (HN Rota, Spain)

Wdbradford - how was your visit in Spain?

  • wlbradford (Rota Spain)

Hi Wanda. It was more fun than should be legally allowed!! The people were friendly, the food was fabulous and the beaches were amazing!!! I was also told that families almost never visit their sailors abroad, so it was a real treat that we were there. I recommend going, if at all possible.
  • janieflorida

Did you stay in Rota or Cadiz?  We are definetly going but not until 2013.  I miss my sailor.
