My son is leaving on deployment soon and I am wondering about tax time, does he file from over there? He has set up so all his bills are being automatically paid, works out that his lease is up about the same time so he will not have to pay rent while gone (he will be homeless when he gets back though). I think he has thought of everything but the taxes.

  • RobynS

My daughter called from boot camp today and unfortunately we missed her call. She called to say CTN is overmanned and she was told she needs to reclassifiy and was calling to ask for our input. This is heart breaking for her I know after being in DEP since last September with CTN as her rating of choice. What's going on with this rating? I'm a retired CTNC and it's very difficult for me to encourage others to enlist when potential sailors are treated this way....with two weeks left to graduate??

  • Sailor Mom Again

Momoffour my son has been on deployment during tax time and basically they all file their taxes when they get back. I think that they have 30 days from the time they get back to get them filed.  They do not need to file for an extension.  If I remember correctly there is a box they check or something for them to indicate they have been deployed. My son is not CTN but IT.

RobynS lots of room in IT.

  • JenBo

Does anybody know what's going on with the CTN rate? Everyone has been saying it's full and that people are being forced to reclassify. I have a CTN depper, so I'm wondering if this will be the case when he ships in mid January. Is this about the fiscal year or will it continue into 2013?

  • spookmom (ship 14 div 367)

I don't know, Jones.  I've been trying to find out something, but getting nowhere.  My son's recruiter hasn't heard anything about it.  My son graduates boot camp next week and so far they haven't mentioned reclassifying.

  • momoffour(Ship 11 div 119)

I know I was stressing about but kid being deployed but pleased that I have already gotten an email and talked to him on Facebook briefly. Hopefully will get am address soon to send him a box of goodies!
  • spookmom (ship 14 div 367)

My son arrived at Corry yesterday so I assume all is going as planned.  Jones, I would suggest your depper gets what he wants in writing, but still have a "Plan B" in case it doesn't happen.  My son signed on for 6 years to get his A and C school "guaranteed."  If they didn't give him what he wanted he had the option to leave the Navy.

  • JenBo

Thank you for your responses everyone. I feel a lot better knowing they have accepted new people to Corry. He is signed for 6 years and has been guaranteed his position. He discussed alternative rates just in case, but we're now more confident that all will go as planned. How is Corry treating your son, spookmom? My depper is pretty nervous about the schooling, but I know he'll do great. His brain is just wired like a CTN's would need to be. Hope all is well with everyone and their sailors.

  • momoffour(Ship 11 div 119)

Totally excited now because I got to Skype with him and I now have an address to send him a box, he said they get pretty much everything they need. He said no cookies because they are overloaded with them this time of the year and everyone just puts them out to share. He does look tired, they work seven days a week, no days off, even holidays, we are hoping to Skype again on Thanksgiving.
  • spookmom (ship 14 div 367)

JonesToBe, my son is doing just fine.  He's been a little bored waiting to class up, but he's supposed to start class Monday if he can get his security badge that morning.

  • JenBo

Spookmom, that's great! Hopefully it all works out and he'll get to class up asap. The nice thing that I've heard about Corry is that you class up and phase up quickly. Apparently because of the demographics of the CT's they are given a bit more freedom than at other A schools. I have about three months until I PCS to Pensacola. I really can't wait to see how everything goes!

Momoffour, glad to hear you got to skype with your sailor. I've heard how CTN schooling is very tough, but he seems to be in good spirits talking about their abundance of cookies. :)

  • spookmom (ship 14 div 367)

Ha ha clockard, I know it's gonna be a busy 6 months.

momoffour, isn't skype great?!  I skyped with my son on Thanksgiving.  I'm really looking forward to seeing him on Christmas!  clockard, he says their leave won't actually be approved until a week before.  Is there any reason why it would not be approved?

  • momoffour(Ship 11 div 119)

No ship, he is as they say in the sandbox LOL, going to be the first Christmas without him.
  • spookmom (ship 14 div 367)

No one in my son's group has been approved yet, but they told him they should hear something soon and rarely does anyone get denied.

  • proudmom

I have posted this question on another page but I am going to post it here as well.

Does anyone know if a sailor is offered a specific opportunity but is not sure that is the direction he wants his navy career to go and turns it down, will that leave a black mark on his record? Will he ever possibly get this chance again should he change his mind? My sailor is really wrestling with a decision he needs to make when he returns to base after the holidays. I am just not sure what advice I can give him.
  • sammy1990

morning all. i know i have seen it before, but am at a loss remembering where. is there an area i can go to with links to what the sailors need to study for the E-5 CTN test? thanks for any assistance provided. sammy

  • sammy1990

have not, clockard. indeed he does have the material provided by the command, but i recall additional information posted here as special tips to be sure and pass on. that is what i am referring to/looking for.

  • Chris

The up-to-date BIB's for the test's are found on NKO. Not all the material can be disclosed here because some of the material is classified. But, a listing of what is needed to be studied can be seen here:

Question: My CTN will be graduating next week from A School. Her orders are for Lackland AF Base in San Antonio. Does anyone have any useful info regarding this base and CTNs?
  • charlestontracy

Hello Everyone! So nice to be a part of this group!! I do have a question, but a little background first. My husband entered the Navy undesginated. He graduated from boot camp in June last year. We moved from South Carolina to San Diego, 2 months later he went on an 8 month deployment! Phew! Finally he was able to strike for CTN, the job he wanted! My husband entered the Navy a little late in life. He is 30 now and we have been married for almost 6 years and have one child. He is working on clearance pw now, and soon it will be a waiting game for A&C school. I have 2 questions: How long is school? And is it long enough for us to move with him? If anyone has questions about boot camp, or deployment, or anything.. feel free to ask! :) Thanks!

  • prov2324mom

    Hi Tracy,

When my son attended JCAC in Nov 2010 it was about 6 months long and tough. He had a buddy in class who was married and coming from undes that lived off base with his wife so I'm sure it will be the same for you. I'm sure with your husbands maturity he will be fine but just be prepared for lots of studying . My son heard that the course has changed a bit and is not quite as hard. Some things they have to learn when they get to their first command. That's not easy either though. Even with the difficulty it's a great rate for the future. Good luck to your husband.

  • proudmom

My son is a CTN and graduated October 2012. School is about 6 mnths maybe a little longer depending how long it takes to class up. There are apts right there by Corry where some of the married sailors families lived. It is a tough course, they have a lot to learn in a short amount of time. My son is currently stationed at Fort Meade, Md.
  • carolina Lynne

My son is at Goodfellow AFB in Tx- C school- arrived mid Sept. Just got pinned today - promoted to Petty Officer 3rd class, along with several others from his program. They should finish mid Jan, and then will be going onto Ft Mead, Maryland.  In his case, A school in Pcola lasted around 3month, very short wait time to class up, and only about 10 day wait for C school to start. Anyone with info/details about Ft Meade?

  • momoffour(Ship 11 div 119)

My son is at ft Meade, has been for a few years now except for six months in Afghanistan. He works off base and seems to like it. Hates the traffic if he has to get near DC. He will be leaving there spring or early summer.
  • proudmom

Hi Navywife+3! My son is a CTN and did his training 2012. My son was in Pensacola from April through October. There were apts right outside of the base, literally looking at the base from the back yards. My son said some of the guys had families that were living there. I know there are certain phases that they have to go through before they can start spending time with you. CTN schooling is very tough and requires a lot of study time so some families wait until after A-school to join their sailor so that they don't distract them. My son has been stationed at Fort Meade, MD and some of his fellow sailors had went to Texas, Hawaii and I think Colorado. It does appear that the job market is really good for this rate. I am just speaking from our experience but I am sure some of the other moms or wives can give you more information as well.
  • lacie

Hey Navywife+3. The Navy will move you to Pensacola while he goes thru school. It is a very difficult school so not everyone moves their families. Our kids and I moved down and it was very worth it. Yea, they're in class like 12 hrs a day and still have to study at home- but for us it was worth the move. It would have been harder for him to not have his wife and kids there to support him. Also, Pensacola is fun and my kids loved it. CTNs have limited duty stations but there are three in Norfolk VA. The other possible stations are in MD, HI, CO, GA, TX, FL, CA, and Japan. I also believe there is one in Italy but I'm not 100%. If you have any more questions let me know. Good luck to you guys and congratulations!
  • wickwook

So my son starts CTN school in a few weeks in FL.  I just wanted to know if its what you expected? And whats it like going to School in FL?

  • spookmom (ship 14 div 367)

Wickwook, it's about 6 months long and fast paced.  Your son will be studying a lot.  They have after school study time with an instructor available if they need help.  If they don't keep a certain grade, the study time is mandatory.  They will have a little more freedom but have to earn it.  They are not allowed to leave base alone.  That's what it was like when my son was there (graduated June 2013).

  • MommyNavyWife

Hi all. I'm new to this site, in hopes of finding more info and support. My husband is taking the ASVAB next week in hopes of qualifying for the CTN program. It's the only job he has any interest in, and we ran into some pretty severe discouragement with the recruiter on being job locked. I'm hoping to find out if anyone ran into a similar issue and if their sailor was able to get CTN anyways, or if we seriously need to possibly expand his job choices in order to even have a chance at CTN. I'm also interested in if anyone's sailor was able to rate transfer while in DEP to CTN. Really looking for anything recent in 2014/ late 2013, since apparently recruitment tactics is changing a heck of a lot.
  • sammy1990

have him take the test and see what scores he gets. it's OK to be locked in one job, but no recruiter will ever tell you that. he'll have to wait until meps has a slot, and that might be a long time... and they will want to sign you to ctr (etc) telling you they will flop the jobs around when one is available. that's up to him if he wants to do it. they still need recruits but the budget is small these days.
  • goarmybeatnavy

Hi there I can give you some insight on my Sailors experience. He really wanted CTN when he went to enlist but there were no slots open at that time (Reserves by the way).  His recruiter talked him into just enlisting into anything, which I thought he was out of his mind to do, but he did and signed a contract for Yeoman.  This was in July 2013 and he was scheduled to ship out in January 2014.  His recruiter seemed confident that he would be able to switch him to a CTN slot before January.  He waited in DEP and was just starting to consider another rate when suddenly the first week of September his recruiter called and asked him if he would be able to ship in 2 weeks…they'd just had someone with the CTN rate drop out.  Needless to say he jumped at the slot, and shipped to Boot Camp September 19th.  Fast forward to now and he is still at A school …..graduating finally in about 2 weeks!!  Its been a long journey.

I have to say tell your husband to possibly consider CTR….mine says while he enjoys the CTN rate (its what he does for a living on the civilian side) he said that CTR sounds like its a much more fun job and a less stressful school (they are all at Corry Station together).  Just depends on personal interests I'm sure, but something for your hubby to consider.  Good luck!

  • karen

Hi MommyNavyWife.  My son is currently in A school for CTN.  His experience was:  He graduated from college in May 2013.  He took the ASVAB in early August.  He really wanted linguistics but missed the score cutoff.  They offered him a variety of other options (really pushing nuke) and he opted for CTN.  He had to wait until January to go to Great Lakes and didn't "class up" until April.  He's looking at graduating in November.

As an aside - my brother runs internet security for a state university system.  He told me that the people he hires that are trained the best received their training from the military.

  • MommyNavyWife

Thank you all! That's very helpful. What we ended up deciding, was for him to take the ASVAB, make sure he rates for CTN, and then go to MEPS and see what was available. We are currently waiting for his citizenship to come through (he's from Canada and currently has his green card) before he goes to MEPS. We decided he won't be willing to sign anything that day other than for CTN, and if they don't have that available, he'll either wait till a slot does come available and sign at the recruiter's office, or he'll sign under another job (like IT), and try to cross rate during DEP. If he doesn't end up being able to change his rating during DEP, he'll serve the minimum time in that job and then apply to cross train to CTN as soon as it's possible. CTN is exactly what he's wanted to do for his whole life, and he has a couple certifications in the field already. The recruiter says he's almost positive he can get him cross rated during DEP, so we're hoping that's legit. It's hard to know what is true and what isn't because I know they can be very manipulative, but regardless, we seem to have a plan in place for him to eventually get his CTN training even if it takes a little longer.

  • MommyNavyWife

goarmybeatnavy did you go to Pensacola with him? I'm debating staying here (in MD) or moving myself and my 11 month old down there while he's in A school. It seems like such a long time, but I know he's going to be incredibly busy with school and needing to focus on that, so I don't want to be a distraction. I'm torn! If I stay up here, we would visit once a month.

  • momoffour(Ship 11 div 119)

Hi Shannon! Private setting is what I have on my Facebook account. Your son won't really discuss his job lol, so you won't really have any worries. Just don't click ok to just any friend request but you probably don't do that anyway. Welcome and best of luck to your son, mine has about 18 months of 6 year ctn contract left, it is a great rate with lots of opportunities!
  • charlestontracy

I have a quick question regarding CTN and stations. My hubby and I, along with our daughter are currently stationed in San Diego. He was finally able to pick a rate after 2 years and will be going to school next week for CTN. I see in some posts there are stations in VA, FL, GA. I am curious about FT. Meade in MD. I thought I would like that but after researching I see the crime rate is pretty high there. Does anyone on here have any experience or thoughts on Ft Meade, or other stations? No specifics, just which one is a favorite. Thanks! :)

  • proudmom

My son has been at Ft Meade since finishing his CTN schooling. He absolutely loves the area because he is right in between Baltimore and Washington DC.
  • momoffour(Ship 11 div 119)

My son was there for a few years he hated the traffic. He lived in silver springs. You do have to watch the surrounding areas due to crime. TX and HI are also duty stations I believe. Best of luck to your family as you start a new adventure!
  • RunnerLHB

charlestontracy- my son starts next week as CTN also, they probably will be in the same class

  • VsMomCB

    Hi all,

Anyone else's sailor NOT liking CTN school :(  Any suggestions or alternatives he'll have as far as selecting another "job".  Thanks

  • momoffour(Ship 11 div 119)

I guess it really depends why he doesn't like it. Mine hated the fact that he had to study non stop, no life to speak of lol. I would encourage him to hang in there, because mine thought he would hate the job too, but got opportunies to do things that were not just sitting behind the desk. If he is really miserable I guess he could see about another CT rate if available to him. I hope he finds a good solution!
  • VsMomCB

thanks momoffour, for the advice.  I'll keep encouraging him!!!

  • tarita

The CTN school is tough. I just told my son yesterday, that many people before him had graduated from the school and many coming after him would do the same. I just encouraged him that he was smart and could do it. His attitude would be a deciding factor on how he completed it and he can do this for 6 months.. I just keep praying for him and encouraging.

  • proudmom

The school is really tough. My son made a few buddies and they had study groups which really helped.
  • MommyNavyWife

I live 15 minutes from Ft. Meade :-) it's also will be #1 on my husbands dream list. I grew up here and have lived here most of my life. There's DC and Baltimore within driving distance, but I do despise the traffic to both. Ft. Meade area isn't bad though. Lots to do here, crime rate is high in obviously Baltimore and DC, but there are plenty of areas around those that are wonderful. Real estate is astronomical, so be warned there, and it's very humid and icky for summers, lovely falls and springs, and fairly mild winters. LOTS of job opportunities around here for CTNs after enlistment. Between VA, DC, and Baltimore, CTNs never have to look hard for work. Excellent pay too.
  • VsMomCB

Thanks for all of the advice !!!

  • Irishcat

This is wonderful information to know. My son just switched to CTN in bootcamp last week and is heading to Pensacola next month! Thanks
  • Ophelia

My son is currently in CTN school in Pensacola.  Do they find out where they will be stationed before or after graduation?  He already put in his dream sheet.  Any info would be appreciated.  Thanks
