Thanks for the info clockard!  I have one more question if anyone can help.  For those who go to Maryland, what is the housing situation.  Are there barracks for navy personnel?  I heard a rumor that they live off base, if so, is there BAH?

    Thanks!

  • momoffour(Ship 11 div 119)

My son lived off base when he was stationed there, they do get housing allowance. Clockard might have more detail to add. Best wishes to your son!
  • Ophelia

Hi momoffour - thanks for the info.  Do you know if they get BAH right away or do they have to attain E5 first?  My son is currently E3 in Pensacola and not sure what his options will be.  Thanks for any info

  • sammy1990

it all depends on what base they report to and what's available. my sailor was lucky to get it at e-4, only did because a ship came in and they needed the barracks. at his new base, everyone is off base. he knows no one at work in the barracks.
  • momoffour(Ship 11 div 119)

Mine lucked out and never had to live in the barracks in Maryland. He lived with coworkers and then after he got back from Afghanistan, he couch surfed till he found a place to live alone. Now is lives with us since we live close to where he is stationed. They give a good amount of pay for off base housing once they get it, it was enough to cover rent and utilities.
  • Ophelia

My son entered the Navy as an E3 (college grad) straight to BUDS.  When he dropped out of BUDS, he ended up as undesignated in the fleet for over a year trying to get CTN.  Very happy he finally got it.  So he is finishing Pensacola, still an E3 after over 2 years.  His understanding is that he will make E4 when he reports to his first post, but that BAH doesn't kick in until E5.  But he has also heard that there is not a lot of housing for Navy at Ft Meade (being an Army base) so they may get a housing allowance early. Is his information what others have found in the past?  I know housing is expensive in Maryland.  Thanks

  • sammy1990

I do know that if there is no billeting in barracks he will be given bah to get it on his own... no matter the rank. he would not have to wait until e-5 to collect bah.
  • Ophelia

Thanks for the info, that really helps!

  • sammy1990

should say not a voluntary move out of barracks. you can't move out "because you want to" and collect bah. you need multiple signatures to get bah assigned.

    Hello,

I had a question about something my SR said in his recent letter from bootcamp.
People are telling him that CTN's aren't "real Sailors" because they never get sea "duty"
My son has been looking forward to going to sea. Is this true. Has anyone heard this?

  • D for Megan

    Crimsonturtle,

There are some billets for CTNs on ships, but not many.  A former shipmate of mine just PCS'd to Japan for sea duty and she is a CTN.  It's likely that your SR will have shore duty for his first tour, but when he's up for orders for his second tour, he can keep his eyes open for a shipboard billet.

  • momoffour(Ship 11 div 119)

I did hear my on mention that they are talking about putting more CTNs on ships, he is glad that will be after he gets out since that was the appeal for him in the rate ( no ships). He didn't mind going to Afghanistan but had no desire to be on a ship. In over 6 years l, he has been on only one ship and that was after it came into port from deployment and only for a day lol!
  • Sailor'sWife

Are there any CTN wives in this group? I would love to chat with you! My husband's PIR is in October and then we are headed to Pensacola for his A school for CTN. We are brand new at this!
  • Grizzy01

Does anyone know if CTN A school is always in Pensecola? My son is at basic training now and told before he left it could possibly be in Montery?
  • Grizzy01

    Thank you!
  • Texasmom

Hello All, I'm back. Its been awhile since being on this site. My sailor, daughter, went into the Navy as a CTN in 2010. She is currently stationed in Maryland.

Now I have great news...My son just joined the Navy and will be a CTN, also. He is currently in Bootcamp and his PIR is Feb 5. The whole family is excited and proud of him.

Just wanted to say Hello and hope everyone's sailor is doing well.

  • Texasmom

How's yur dtr ctn path been? Has she enjoyed? What duty stations
  • proudofmysailors

    Hello Texasmom,

My daughter is at Ft. Meade. She was stationed there right after “A” school at Corry.

She was working at NIOC which she loved, she was doing CTN work, but then after 3 or 4 years she was moved to USCYBERCOM and she was doing no CTN work at all. She did not get to use her CTN knowledge at all. She was very disappointed. Over all she enjoyed the Navy. She will not be reenlisting; she will be leaving the Navy early 2016.

  • Texasmom

Proudofmysailors. Hi. Don't know what us cyber come 8s and why was she moved? What are her plans in getting out of navy? Anything helpful she'll be taking wth her to the professional field?
  • proudofmysailors

Thank you clockard, Yes, she was lucky that she did not have to relocate. She stayed at Ft. Meade just at a different duty station and responsibilities.

Texasmom, clockard's explaination should help you understand why my daughter moved to a different job.

  • proudmom

My sailor has been at Ft Meade for 3 years and just found out he will be transferring to Japan in August. He is really excited.
  • Bookster

congratulations proudmom! My son is stationed in San Diego and really liking it but I'm sure he would jump at a Japan stationing.

  • sourpatchkid

Is there someone who has a Sailor who has been through ION that may be able to answer a few questions I have regarding orders, stationing, etc? You can add me as a friend and PM me, if so. Thanks!

Posting to keep this group active...
“Deleting inactive members - The ad agency that handles N4M is in the process of updating the site. If you have not been active since 12/1/15 you will be deleted to make room for new members. You will be able to re-join. If you don't want to be deleted you will need to post something in any one of your groups to activate your account. They have already started deleting members.”
  • clockard

I can't believe it!! I was deleted! I rejoined using the same name, but "I" am no longer the creator of this group. Apparently.

  • clockard

Everything I ever posted on here before December 18 is gone. Period. Someone deleted an entire "page" (about 50) of active members, and NING is claiming that our content cannot be retrieved. Honestly, I suspect this means they don't want to go to the effort because we all know that nothing on the Internet ever truly disappears.

This means that not only are my comments missing, but any discussions I started are gone which includes all comments, not only mine. It is very strange to see conversations where I am being thanked for something, but the "something" is missing.

I am using the same name as before even though that may be a little confusing. It still shows "clockard" as the group creator, but it isn't a live link because that member was deleted. I don't think I can get reinstated as the creator, but I am supposedly still waiting for group admin privileges. Sigh...

Whatever you are celebrated at this time of year, I hope it is happy!

  • Momof1Army1Navy1TooYoung

    Proud new CTN Mama here!

Any recently trained CT Moms that can tell me where my CTN goes from RTC? Are there multiple Pensacola locations?

    Thanks!
  • Grizzy01

My CTN son graduated July 2016! He was at Corry Station and loved Pensacola.
  • Cellomom

My son will be heading to Pensacola for A school soon. Will he need his own laptop?
  • clockard

Cellomom, he will need his own laptop for personal use only. He will not be allowed to take it to class, and he will not be allowed to use the classroom machines for personal things.

It's been eight years since my son was at Corry, but I do know that he still cannot take his personal devices in to work at NIOC Ft. Meade.

  • N0b0dy69

Once a sailor fails out of CTN school and they tell him they're not recommending him to re-mediate; what happens then? Do they get any choice in where they go? Do they re-class and get their choice of jobs?

My sailor desperately wants to be a CTN, but had trouble early on with the testing. He never learned to study in his life, and thus didn't know how to prepare. Schooling K-12 came very easy to him and he never had to learn. Now he knows, but it was too late to do anything because he'd failed too many early on. He's totally bummed, but what happens next?

  • clockard

Looking for "man of Steele's wife"... I sent you a friend request.

  • ProudNavySonMom

    Hello all

my son is in BC and will be going to CTN school in about 2 1/2 weeks. Thanks for letting me join

  • clockard

ProudNavySonMom - Welcome to the group! I see you posted a question about liberty for Memorial Day. Your son will have to let you know what his liberty will be for that weekend. This isn't necessarily guaranteed, or a standard number of days.

It's been many years, but my son's PIR was Memorial Day weekend. We were thrilled to have a very long weekend with him before he flew to Florida and we drove back to Ohio. I hope you get a nice, long visit with your son.

Sorry for the delay in my response. Please see the note above - Getting Answers - PLEASE READ!

  • ProudNavySonMom

    Hello everyone!

My question is, my son should graduate CTN school in November. He is bravo shift. I need to ask off from work with as much notice as possible. Does anyone know what days of the week the ceremony will happen?

    i appreciate any info, thanks!

  • Heather

I have so many questions about CTN and how does Pensacola work? I know its different for everyone, but some round about info would help? Anyone still on that has had a CTN and can answer some questions?

  • proudmom

    Hi Heather,

My son was at Corry in 2012 and we were able to visit him 4 times. There are different phases when they get there, which also determines when & how much liberty they get..  They can start classes right away or have to wait several weeks, it depends on how the cycle is running. While they are waiting for classes they can do volunteer work, which will look really good for them later. You can communicate a lot at this stage but keep in mind once classes start they will be extremely busy so you may just talk on weekends or every few week.  Happy to answer any question you may have, if I can.

  • colophon

    Hi Heather,

I have a CTN, he's been there since early fall and should be finishing late April or early May. What kind of questions?
  • Heather

Do they get any leave right away? When should I expect his first leave to come see everyone? When can they have visitors or leave base usually? Should I bring him his car? I know its a very difficult program I am hearing about all these schools. A school, c school. Do they stay in Pensacola for all their training? Do they go on ships or stay state side?I live in Central FL. so I plan on driving up asap when he can. I know it all depends and there is no standard, but A round about answer would help.

Sorry all the questions, Thank you for any replies.

  • clockard

Hello moms and all, I'm just checking in here to let you know I am reading your posts. My son was at Corry such a long time ago (10 years!) I'm not sure I have any pertinent info for you, so I will just continue reading in case I have something to add.

  • STP0203

Hi, my son is in Great Lakes right now and go to Pensacola in the beginning of November. I know I don’t have to be worried about this now BUT I am wondering which station/ base my son possibly will be sent after finishing up A and C schools? I have heard many people go to Fort Meade MD, Fort Gordon GA, or Hawaii. Is there any places he possibly to be sent?
  • WaterLily

STP0203, my son started A school a couple weeks ago, so I am certainly no expert.  But the main duty stations I hear of are in Maryland, Georgia, Texas, Hawaii & Virginia.

  • STP0203

Thank you for your info, WaterLily.  I have heard that some people are sent to Pensacola.  I am just hoping my son will be sent close by.   Thanks.

  • WaterLily

STP0203, you're welcome.  This group and the Corry group aren't very active and not many reply or comment on here, from what I've seen.  I definitely feel in the dark about what to expect next.  I'd just be happy if I could figure out if my sailor will be coming home for the holidays or not.  But at least you can have frequent contact with your sailor while in A school and the ability to send them care packages helps greatly.  Hang in there.

  • STP0203

    WaterLily:    Thank you so much.

My son called me several times about high security clearance. I wanted to ask someone about these stuff but I don’t know how much I am able to ask people in this site because our kids are in “ high” security environment, you know.

Is Corry group for mainly CTN? Or All CTI, CTM, CTT, and CTR? I should check it out!  Thanks.

  • clockard

Hi, folks! I am the "owner" of this group. Sorry there isn't an active link for me by the group name. A couple years ago, someone made a huge mistake when they were deleting inactive members and included about 50 very active members. That means all my previous posts are gone, and they cannot recreate my ownership of this group. Sigh... You should be able to click on my picture and send me a friend request.

Anyhow, I do continue to monitor this group even though my son was active from 2009 until 2015.

STP0203, if you are asking about the Pensacola group, they are not your best source for information about CTN. CTNs are at Corry Station which is near, but not on, the main Pensacola base. Think of it more as a community college as opposed to a big university.

A little general information for you...

All CTs are required to obtain a Top Secret clearance. I seem to remember that they must have this before they can "class up."

Don't worry about asking sensitive questions because we (parents, spouses, etc.) do not know anything that cannot be discussed here.

As far as holiday leave, the best person to talk to about that is your Sailor. There are no guarantees. From now on, the "needs of the Navy" are top priority.

CTN does not have "A" school and "C" school; they have JCAC - Joint Cyber Analysis Course. Here is an excellent link to learn more about it:

Q&A on the Joint Cyber Analysis Course

If anyone wants to ask me anything privately, click on my picture and send a friend request.

  • WaterLily

Clockard, so that makes sense as to why the group seems very disjointed. How unfortunate that you were deleted accidentally. Would it help if this group was deleted and then recreated??? (Likely not, or it would already have been done!)
  • clockard

WaterLily, I did think about that. I actually did it with a very small private group I own, but I would not be able to recreate everything on this group. Best to just move forward.

  • Data Guru

There is also a FB site called Cryptology - CTI - CTM - CTN -CTR - CT - IT - Corry Station - Pensacola. It’s a little bit more active about CTN information at the moment, but that’s recent. There are a few mom’s whose children seem to be further into the program and can probably answer some basic questions. Like who delivers cake’s to Corry for birthdays.
