Alicia, my son & dil live in Chesapeake. They're moving into a 2 bedroom apt in the complex they're in, because my first granddaughter is due in March. The complex is called Holly Point. It is very well maintained, beautifully manicured. Very close to shops & resaurants & the major highways. Good luck with you new venture.

I found this to be a very interesting website for those new "norfolk" moms: https://cnic.navy.mil/NorfolkSTA/
  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Keep in mind these aren't small towns: Norfolk and neighboring Virginia Beach are the largest cities in all of Virginia! So it's hard to generalize about friendliness. There's a good overview of Norfolk to read at http://lincolnmilitary.com/Installations/naval-station-norfolk/ , and the photo of the Norfolk waterfront at http://www.visitnorfolktoday.com is exactly what it looks like from the $1 ferry that connects it to Olde Towne Portsmouth, beautiful! Like any city, you have to research areas for safety and not stray, especially late at night. I also check http://www.wavy.com (local tv station) to keep up on news and weather, and you can sign up for email updates.

Angie, I agree about Chesapeake. My son & daughter-in-law live there now. It is a beautiful area, close to shops & restaurants. Sure it's a little out of the way, but I think it's worth it. The people I've encountered have been very pleasant.

Cindy22, Naval Station Norfolk's Fleet & Family Support Center offers a class "Car Buying Strategies" (next one 2/24) as well as individual financial counseling; her ship's duty driver can take here there, too. The # is 757-444-2120, open 8 am - 4:30 pm. If she has an account with USAA (only for service members & dependents) she can get a very good rate on car insurance.

Hi Tyguymom, my son is on the BIG E. He has been there since April of 09. There is also an Enterprise group you should join. We're going to visit my son & DIL this coming weekend. They are expecting their first child (my firsr grandchild) next month.
  • June - Jon's Mom

Hi Tyguymom, thanks. I am excited. I can't wait for this baby to arrive. I am not that familiar with Virginia Beach as my son lives in Chesapeake. Look up top here under discussions, Places Where We Have Stayed, that might help you out a bit with VA Beach. Remember to plan well ahead if you are going to visit in the summer. Rates go up and rooms get scarce as most people are headed to the beach. My husband did look into house rentals for us, for when the baby arrives. Rates now are off season, so we can get a really good deal. Good luck!
  • June - Jon's Mom

Enily, you must be so excited. Bet Wishes on your wedding. good luck with the apartment hunting.Sorry I can't help you out there.
  • arlene40

My daughter went to Norfolk to see my grand-daughter and took her grandson to see his mom. I know they will have a good time and enjoy each other. My grand-daughter is assigned to the James T Williams ship but is docked there in Norfolk now...she has an apartment so at least my daughter and her husband will not have hotel expense while visiting. I am so glad they got to go. I want to go in April. Hope they don't have to leave out before I can go up.
  • arlene40

Is there anyone that is assigned to the James T Williams fighter ship? I wonder when they will have to leave out again. I want to make sure I get up to see my grand-daughter before she leaves back out. My grandson will be graduating from boot camp in Great Lakes on March 12th, and I am going up there for that, then I have another grandson that graduates from his B School in the Coast Guards on April 14th or 16th can't remember the exact date and I want to go there too. He is in Yorktown, VA. so I am hoping I can go see him Graduate and go by Norfolk and see my grand-daughter all at the same time. Wow, I am going to be a busy grandmother. I have another grandson that will graduate from High school in June and he plans on joining the Army. Wow, It is going to take a lot of money to follow these kids... I need help! (lol)...
  • Micki1465

Arlene40, how awesome that you have so many grandchildren to "follow". Congrats on all of their great accomplishments. Enjoy every minute!!!
  • Jeff'smom

Hi everyone....new to this site also. My son is on the USS Wasp, I am coming to Norfolk next week for a week. My son will be working alot while I will be there, but I hope I get to see the ship this time. I hope I get to met all the great friends my son talks about helping him. He has to go out for a few days while I am there. Anything happening next week where I can met any moms.
  • jboysmom

JeffsMom - My son is also on the Wasp! My daughter-in-law just got down there to Norfolk to pick up my son from the ship when he got off work this evening. She will be there through Tuesday of this week. Wish I could be there, but I'm here at home dog sitting for them.
  • Jeff'smom

Thanks jboysmom, I am looking forward to seeing Jeff and his family. It's been about 2 years since we have been to Norfolk. What is your son's name maybe I can met him while I am there. How long has your son been on the WASP. My son Jeff has been on the WASP for 4 years now, he is a MM. I am very proud of him.
  • Cindy D

Hello everyone, I just found out that my son is going to be stationed in Norfolk. He wont be there for a few weeks. Is there anything in particular we should know?
  • Cindy D

Eilzabeth- wow - where do I start. My son has been assigned to the USS Carr so I believe he will be stationed on the ship and not shore duty. He is single and will be going alone. He will not be bringing a car - well that is our thought. He has a car but his brother is buying it from him because we thought it would be more of a hassle since he will be on the ship. How does he go about getting a sponser or will one be assigned to him? I just don't know what to ask yet. I am just gald that I found someplace to go to try to get answers. He just finished A school and this is his first station. I know he will be fine I am just nervous.
  • June - Jon's Mom

Hi Cindy, Welcome aboard! You may want to rethink the car situation. The Norfolk area is huge. Even with him staying on the ship, he will have off time when he'll want to explore the area, go shopping, etc. This is just my opinion, someone may have more input.
  • Cindy D

what does he do with his car when he is on the ship?
  • Cindy D

Thank You for you input. We were thinking it would be more of a pain to have a car but I guess not.
  • Cindy D

I think that we will reconsider the car. Can he drive the car to base right away or shuld we plan on getting it to him at a later date? I spoke with Mike today and he said that he does have a sponser already. He is still in Great Lakes waiting to get his wisdom teeth pulled then he will be home for two weeks before he goes to Norfolk. I know he will get alot of these questions answered but can he bring his cell phone or lap top on the ship?
  • Cindy D

Thank you everyone for you advice
  • Cindy D

Sue, good luck to you. My son will be leaving to go to Norfolk the beginning of April. I wish I could help you. I pray that something will pan out for you.
  • TexasMomof2

Sue, I sent you a friend request as my page is private. Accept and I'll send you a message - maybe have some ideas??
  • jboysmom

Sue. you might want to join the group on here called "Sailor Rescue List". There might be someone on there that can help you. I wish I could be more help. If it was just a week later, we would be moving my daughter-in-law down there to move into a house with my son. I know they would be glad to let you stay, but they won't be moving in until April 2nd. I found a room at the Days Inn on North Shore drive for $40 per night. That's the cheapest I found for us to stay when we go down the weekend of April 2nd. Hope that helps. God Bless you and I will say a prayer for you and your husband.
  • June - Jon's Mom

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

There's a car buying class offered on base. Beware of local dealerships preying on young/naive sailors! USAA offers great insurance rates for active military (https://www.usaa.com) Class: https://www.cnic.navy.mil/NorfolkSTA/FleetFamilyReadiness/SupportSe...
  • Aimee G

Hello everybody if you guys can please guide me. I know it’s kind of early to ask this but time has been flying by fast and I don't want to be rushing last minute and not know what I'm doing. I live in NM and this year is going to be the first time I go VA for my BF Homecoming he is on The USS EISENHOWER. I know that there is not a homecoming date yet. But when there is how will i know? I don't know anybody there. So I want to prepare before hand on what to do or what expect. How many days in advance should I fly in before the ship pulls in?
  • Micki1465

What a great Easter weekend in Norfolk! Beautiful weather. Blessings to our sailors!
  • jboysmom

We have been in Norfolk this past weekend visiting with our son and helping to move his wife into their new house. We went to Virginia beach yesterday and had a great time. Lots to do there and the beach is very nice. Our son is on the Wasp and will be going out to sea this week. At least his wife will have plenty of boxes to unpack while he's out to sea this week.
  • John and Yvonne

I haven't been on here in quite some time, so I just want to make a short comment here by way of introduction. I'm a retired Navy chaplain. Yvonne and I have a "home away from home" for servicemen and women in our home on weekends. On Saturdays we get together for food fun and games. On Sundays we have a big home cooked meal after church and then we relax, watch Christian videos, have Bible studies where the guys and girls can ask questions and hopefully get some answers.

If your sons or daughters get orders to the Norfolk-Virginia Beach area and you think they might be interested in getting away from the base for a few hours, into a "real" home, with a real family, let them know about us. We'd love to invite them over. Send us a private message on here and we'll give you our contact information. We've had several Navyformoms' sailors to the house. Some Navyformoms have even visited!
