For families and friends of Sailors who are stationed at Norfolk; for either Sea Duty or Shore Duty Sailors. Just make sure to keep OPSEC issues in mind and not disclose ship movements in advance.
When the ship is in dry dock he won't be living or eating on the ship at any point, all his meals will be provided at home. Will they still deduct this money?
If they won't be providing meals, then they shouldn't deduct BAS. Typically when a ship goes into dry dock, they connect to a barge where the Sailors live (or spend the night when they have duty) and that is also where the galley is so meals are still provided. Depending on the maintenence the ship needs there may be a different set up for your husband's ship, but ultimately if the ship is providing meals in some manner regardless of if the individual takes advantage of that, they deduct BAS. If the ship is not providing any meals for whatever reason then they should not deduct BAS.
With the holiday approaching, please let your sailor know that in the Hampton Roads area, there will be DOUBLE DUI CHECK POINTS starting this weekend from 2030-0230. UBER, UBER, UBER!
I wanted to send Christmas Cards to my son's ship by including them in his Christmas Box. He can then hand them out to his sailor buddies. Is this ok to do or is there another way?
We were so lucky to spend another Thanksgiving in Norfolk, seeing our son and his friends. We cooked a wonderful dinner for about 35 of his friends and loved hearing about all the experiences they have gone through the past year.
1ProudMomofNavySon - I can't think of anything better than that; many people include cards in care packages. Hopefully you're using these priority mail, flat rate boxes so you get the $2 mailing discount for sending to an FPO address!
Mommamac, that sounds great! You cooked for 35?! Did you get a medal? Or at least a coin? lol Awesome!
An important note to all the valued members of Norfolk Sailors - Families and Friends - Navyformoms.com is being updated and upgraded by the agency that oversees it, and part of this effort is making room for new members. To do so, members who have not been active since 12/1/15 will be removed but will be able to re-join. If you haven't posted since that date, please do so right away. This is all part of an effort to make Navyformoms.com the best it can be for everyone, seasoned moms and new members alike. Thanks and watch for good things to happen!
I have not posted in a while, but so enjoy reading all your posts! Please keep my account current. My sailor has been in Norfolk for 2 years now. My son has had a very difficult month and will be home in Jan.. Not soon enough for this mom, but so happy he can come home! I miss him so much and with a tragedy he has gone through, I miss him so much more. And then it will be off to deployment. I pray for safety for all our sailors! God Bless you all! And thank you for helping with this process!
Thanks for the information on keeping accounts active. Our son has been in Norfolk for a year and a half. I am so grateful to have this connection with the sailors stationed there and their families.
It would be appreciated if my account also remains active. My son is attached to the USS Harry S. Truman and is based in Norfolk for another year and a half; possibly more. Thank you for your consideration.
I don't post much but this site is a wealth of information and encouragement. My son has station in Norfolk since 2/16. His sub is currently in dry dock. Please keep me active
I am new to the group. My son graduated A school end of Jan. He loves being an AG. We got to go down and spend the weekend in Sept. Soo.. I guess C school is 9 months?
My sailor went from A School to Norfolk and now is at C School. Yes, C school is 9 months from what I understand. He started in Oct and graduates in July. Right now he is top of his class. Couldn't be prouder.
If your son or daughter is stationed here and can't go home for Christmas, we would be happy to invite them over to our home for Christmas Day Dinner! If they don't have transportation, we can provide that too. :) We also have sailors over on the weekends to give them a place to hang out away from the base. We feed them, play board games, watch movies, go to special events in the area....Let us know if that sounds good to you or your sailor. We can pm you our cell number. Also check out our page on this site to know more about us.
My son will be on the Truman beginning in January. He has asked for sheets for Christmas. There are several websites that claim to have 'exactly' what the sailors need. Is there one site that is better than the others? Any suggestions for other things to get him to use on the ship? How much storage space will he have? Thank you for your help!
mom2dcba - this company Fleet Sheets for bedsheets. Also see if he wants a set of NavyRackPack curtains - they are darkening curtains for his rack that help with sleep, also have storage pockets, and they embroider the last name for free! A lot of Sailors love them, mine included. Pat Neleski is the owner and she is awesome, call her at 855-722-5722 if you have any questions, I've known her for several years now, tell her I said Hi! :) My son also used a thin Tempurpedic-type mattress topper on the ship.
Celeb Chef Jacoby Ponder, the former Navy CS who has been a Food Network contestant twice, has put out a call to all single Sailors for "Speed Dating Chef Edition" that he is hosting on January 7th at Stratford University in Virginia Beach! Chef Ponder was a runner-up on Chopped and won Cutthroat Kitchen. Looks like fun! :)
My son is returning from his 1st deployment on the Ike, his assigned ship. What is the process and how likely is it that he can get single sailor housing when he returns? He is an E-3. Can he apply now or does he have to wait until they return? Thanks.
Happy for you that your son is soon to be home. :) I just wanted you to know that my husband and I invite sailors over to our home on the weekends. We have a couple of sailors on the Ike who come over and are looking forward to seeing them again. So, after the holidays when things turn to normal, and he comes back from spending time with your family, we would like to invite him also. I can pm you our cell number for future reference. :)
