For families and friends of Sailors who are stationed at Norfolk; for either Sea Duty or Shore Duty Sailors. Just make sure to keep OPSEC issues in mind and not disclose ship movements in advance.
Thank you misisu for asking that question. I haven't even thought about that and our sailor is going to have the same issue! I hope someone has an answer.
Good morning, just talked with my DIL and she said they should be hearing shortly about evacuations...oh darn, that means she will come up here with our only Grandchild to wait out the storm...:))))) Has anyone heard any updates?
Hello, Johanna, We are also waiting on updates from our Sailor. We actually live in Va about 3 hours away from Norfolk. I have been following along with their local news. You can find current updates with Wavy 10 news.
So I have a really stupid question, not to me, but still....lol!! My son is on a ship that is in the shipyard, he is due to come home on Weds for scheduled leave??? Will he be allowed to leave, or will they mandate him on ship even tho it's in the shipyard? He was to come home for my birthday, but I don't want him to get into any trouble, so.........he can come anytime, but was just curious???? Thank you for any info!!!!!!!!!
Just got word from our sailor they are tightening his ship down and staying on board. I must admit my anxiety levels are out the roof as I'm still new at this Navy mama thing.
Deep breath! We went through this with my youngest Sailor in a catastrophic Typhoon in 2013 in Guam. They did the same thing and all I could do was watch the news feeds out of Guam. The Navy would not put these kids at this kind of risk if they weren’t one hundred percent sure!!! Not to mention, the kids had HUGE bragging rights that they “rode out the Typhoon!” I am sending huge hugs and strength and please let us know how you and your Sailor are doing.
We got word from our Sailor yesterday that he was leaving out today on USNS Comfort to sit out the storm at sea. I felt bad that I didn't even realize that there was anything heading there way. ugh, I am sure out of the running for mom of the year.
It's actually much safer for them to be out at sea during these storms than docked at the pier. The ships would get knocked around into the piers and sustain all kinds of damage and be much rougher for our Sailors to have to man at the pier, not to mention more dangerous should the ship sustain any type of damage that would cause flooding or fires. Ships are made to be at sea and our Sailors are trained for these kinds of situations.
T'S MOM, we all have those times. Your still in the running for mom of the year because you raised a sailor ;) Abuon18, that's not a good feeling, our sailor is locked down at the pier on his ship starting tomorrow until the storm moves through. I'm praying all will be okay. And I trust the navy has trained our kids very well to deal with these issues as they arise.
Abuon...great advice. As I mentioned earlier, our youngest was sent out during a massive Typhoon and had the least amount of problems and the biggest bragging rights...:)))). Hugs to all. There is definitely no handbook for this one...just trusting our Sailors and their Commands...it’s all good.
Tabitha, you're welcome! I'm glad that helped and hope it puts you at ease a little. I know we are always going to worry but I've found that knowing the information helps me worry less. Hope it's the same for you as well.
I live in California and have a lot of anxiety, we have never experienced a Hurricane. My Sailor Girl is in Virginia Beach, she said “they are really taking this seriously” I said like “Yes” bless her little heart
@T’s Mom 22 you & I both “regarding mom of the year” I found out about the Hurricane....though this group!! Then started watching the the news. I live and California, so this is a new experience for my daughter in Virginia Beach
Hello, Lulubugg, our sailor is in Norfolk we live about 3 hours away ( have no idea how I got so lucky, but I'm thankful) I have been keeping up with the weather through Wavy 10 weather app ( you can get it on Google play for android or app store on the iphone) It has great updates and right now is showing a lot of activity un Norfolk. I have been super freaked out too Susy1017 until I started reading and communicating with the ladies here. We have been in contact with our sailor and starting sometime tomorrow we probably won't get to talk to him anymore until after the storm passes. I'm praying for everyone and keeping close watch as I am sure all of you guys are on the hurricane. Hugs to all and hope your each having a great day.
Just talked to my Sailor and she was l evacuated this afternoon from Virginia Beach. She is in route with a shipmate to Baltimore to stay with a high school friend from California. Praying for their safety it was currently rain while we were talking.
My sailor is also in Chesapeake and safe so far. He's so calm but I'm nervous enough for us both. I also told him, if he has a buddy that's stranded in the Central Florida area and can't get back to due to the weather, to send them here. Yes, I can take a family. I have plenty of room. Hotel rooms are $$ and could be non-existent due to others heading south to avoid the storm. If you know anyone that needs a place to stay, please message me.
My son is in Portsmouth and today is his birthday.
They have released all non essential personnel from his command to evac. His roomates have all left the area, and he had to muster this morning, so is going to stay.
I hope there is nothing major happening for our sailors, and pray for those who have to ride out this mess further south.
My second son who is bootcamp right now was allowed to call him last night so that was a nice surprise.
I am hoping that my son will park his car in a garage that has been opened for this even and that he says safe.
Some of you may know that my husband and I invite sailors over to our home on the weekends.. Check out our page on this site. Maybe your sailors would like to join us. :)
Well wiffer peanut, I look forward to you being here! Not a lot of activity on this page but still nice to be here with other Norfolk families! Just knowing if you post something, someone will respond. Which for me is comforting, because I drive my hubby up the wall from time to time. LOL! :)
