Sailors attending A School in Meridian, Mississippi

They found their seabags! Anyone on here from PIR 2/26?

Hi Denise, what is your husband going to school for? How does he like Meridian so far? My son seems to like it.

Wow, 2 weeks! My son thinks his is 6 or 7 weeks, then he has 4 weeks sub school.

Chris in MI: My son is currently in Meridian. I sent him his cell (they can have them). Some moms were able to go to the Chicago airport to see their sailors off after bootcamp and gave them cell phones/lap tops then (they couldn't receive them while still on base). So, I think they can have them. There has been a problem with BIG BOXES being received in Meridian in a timely manner, so pack as small as you can. Apparently, big boxes are processed differently and the sailors go to a different place to get them. One Mom sent her son his laptop, but he couldn't get service. She didn't know why. You might want to wait until your daughter calls you from Meridian (she has a phone card, doesn't she?) and see what she wants you to do after she checks with others there. Hi Chris! Congratulations on your daughters PIR! My son is in Meridian waiting on LS school to start, I thought it was supposed to start 3/10, but I guess it got pushed back. I know the sailors have computer access so I am not in a hurry to send my son's laptop.

Sharon, if you ever need more info on jobs, just google the abbreviations as a Navy position. That is how I've educated myself. But I have a long way to go! There are so many jobsn the Navy!

Chris-our son had free time in the evening after chow, but not for a couple of weeks, even though his schooling had not started yet, ndon't know if it is the same for all or not though. Good luck, he Loves it now, and we text quite often.

Yes! they can use their phones!

They tell them the address not to long after arriving,there is a big difference in treatment,now they have real beds,they do watches or any other job they assign.They share the rooms with 2 more sailors,in this case,females.There is a nice environment.

NEVER send anything "overnight" to any militar base;just send it Insured and Delivery Confirmation,that way you can track it all the way...The office where they get the mail in base is close on saturdays...

My son got to Meridian last Tues, he called Tues, Wed, and Thurs and I haven't heard from him since. I guess he may be keeping busy, but I am dying to hear from him!
I know he hasn't started classes yet unless he started this week. He wasn't sure when he would start. Does anyone know if school started for LS? I know there is another one starting in a couple of weeks, I wonder if he is on hold until then.

hismomdeeship: Does your son have a phone card or his cell? I'm assuming he used a pay phone to call you last week. My son said the pay phones are a distance from where they are staying (Liberty Center, I think). Your son is probably getting his required watches in...he probably is just busy trying to get adjusted to his new surroundings too after boot camp. I'm sure he will call soon! Hang in there!

Sharon: I feel sure that your son and mine are in the same class. He told me last night that March 18th is the date they hope to be finished. I know that will be different for each one, I would think. But it won't be long!

How is your bf doing in bootcamp?

My son called tonight, he starts school tomorrow. He said he got his orders already and will be stationed in Maryland, not sure where. He still has not received his cell that I mailed last Thurs. HAven't mailed his laptop but now I know to get delivery confirmation, thanks for the advice!

thanks. Bootcamp sounds like it is going good for him. I talked to him about 2 weeks ago and he sounded really good. He actually proposed to me in a letter and says he has big plans to officially ask me during grad weekend. He told me in one of his letters that they had earned a flag and I'm not sure if they have gotten more since. I believe his job code is going to be SH but not sure. I looked it up and it looks like that is being phased out? He said his school is 4 weeks (20 days) in MS. I am so excited that I am down to just a little over 2 weeks.

sschick02: Wow, you are going to have an extra wonderful time when you go there for PIR...being asked officially to marry him, and celebrating in the joy of his graduation. The flags are a BIG thing. They really are proud of those and get caught up in the competition. The part of bc that he is in now is still hard, but the fun factor is much greater. Battlestations next week or the 1st part of the following week for him will be the culmination of everything...an all-nighter...and then he trades his recruit cap for his Navy cap. Quite an honor for them. Good luck and congratulations!

Chris in MI: The 6 lines part is right. But I'm not sure the street and surely not the suite number would be the same for everyone? I know the address looks a little odd, but I'm sure what you have is correct. Her name is the most important. My son asked his roommate for the address and relayed it to me, and he has received mail fine and the box with his cell.

I sent it Priority Mail. He got it in 2 days. I was surprised that he got it right on time. Bigger boxes go to a different place on the base than the smaller ones. So she needs to be aware of the 2 places there to check. I understand that there is a "mail list" posted...no mail call like boot camp. So she will need to be checking.

Chris in MI: Glad you got the box and letter off. She may get the letter telling her where the box is AFTER she gets the box! :-) I'm sure she will eventually get both boxes and the letter. Good luck to your daughter at Meridian!

got a call last night someone was letting her use their cell phone. sounded good and relaxed

My son has been enjoying himself. They gather every night and watch movies. He likes everyone in his whatever they call it: the guys that all live on the same floor. He calls me a lot and we talk on Facebook. This is so much better than bootcamp. I am planning a visit the first weekend in April. Has anyone else gone for a visit?

chriss in mi my how thnings have changed. my husband is retired Air force and the communications we will have with them (e-mail, testing) is so different from when you and my husband were in we only had letters and phone calls. glad ffor the techonolgy of toady.

does anyony body know where your sailor is going after A school?

My son said he is going to Patuxent River, MD, but he doesn't have any official orders yet.

My son said he got his orders but not in writing. They told him he would be stationed in Patuxent River, Maryland, but he is supposed to be on a submarine and there is no sub base there so I am confused. I think he may be confused too, maybe he has to go for more training there?! Anyone else have a sailor that will be on a sub?

Well, my son doesn't always listen real well either. He definitely needs to learn since I am not there to hold his hand, lol, but I always feel like I am telling him over and over to ask questions and he doesn't, ugh! It's frustrating!

Yay, Chris! It is such a great feeling to be able to keep in contact! My son has not received his laptop; I sent them separately. I sent his phone right away because I wanted him to get that first.

He probably will spend most of this week getting settled, doing some watches with another person already there (to learn the ropes!), settling in with his roommates, etc. He should know his address right away when he gets there. Does he have his cell with him? If not, there are pay phones in the Liberty Center.
I had to ask my son for the address when he finally called home (he didn't have his cell yet...I mailed it). It had totally slipped his mind to give it to me...so make sure to ask when you 1st talk to your son. The mail is different there from bc...there is a "mail list" where your son's name will be added when he has mail. So he has to check it. The mail doesn't come "to him" as it did in bc. What is your son's Navy job? I know you are SO PROUD of him, as you should be! They go through alot in boot camp, and good for them to make it! YEAH~ Did you get to his PIR?

Yes, I went to PIR, and it was awesome! I will never forget that experience. I am sooo proud, and so honored to be his mother.

On boot camp posts, Tammy passed along some info for those getting ready to join the fleet. She said if they are on a ship, they need to get ship to shore calling cards so that they can stay in touch. Also, debit/credit cards don't work on the ship, so they need NEX cash cards. I would think our sailors will be aware of this, but a good thing for us moms to know too, don't you think???? Thanks, Tammy!

Thanks for the info diannep, I depend on a lot of the information here that I learn. My son doesn't pass a lot of stuff on and I don't think he always knows what is going on!

hismomdeeship: You're welcome, and ...Oh, yes. We're with you on that one! My son has been pretty responsible with most things since leaving for boot camp in Nov, but little details like this one may "slip his mind!" I get most all of my info on this site too.

Ok, question... do the sailors receive a check stub of any kind with record of their pay. My son got paid; direct deposit, but has no stub, he claims that they don't get anything there. I told him they have to give him some sort of record of his pay even if it is in an email.?

I rec'd a call this evening. They are doing fine - enjoying being away from GL and BC!! Much more laid back.

hismomdee, the sailors should receive an LES (Leave and Earnings Statement), which outlines their pay, any deductions, their leave days, rank, etc. They should have received before leaving GL.
