I can so relate, sbarber!!  I mailed a box of clothes to my son this past Saturday.  This afternoon he sent me a text message requesting additional items.  LOL...  It is nice to watch them grow from boys to responsible men.  This has been quite a transformation and yet it is only the beginning.  :-)
  • sbarber

Good moring I hope everyone had a great weekend. Just wanted to pass this along seems some people are having problems with the dry cleaners there not removing stains etc I think we need to let them know it's not moms laundry room lol they aren't looking for the problems on the uniforms the guys need to make those known to the dry cleaner so they aren't having to purchase new uniforms, they get so used to us doing everything sometimes they need a little reminder that mom's not there to take care of everything. It didn't happen to my son just someone that he knew and the young man thanked me for sending my son the tide stain stick lol. Have a great day.

When mailing a box to your sailor, what service has anyone used?  My son said something about Fedx or ups but being married to a USPS employee I tend to always use the postoffice.  My son said something about there not being a postoffice on base.
  • sbarber

I sent mine UPS the big brown sorry I don't believe they have a "post office" per say but it was very reasonable and fast.
  • Christa (Proud Navy Mom)

Uh, oh!  I mailed things to my son via USPS.  Hope he gets them!  YIKES!!
  • sbarber

@Christa I'm sure they will get there :-) no worries LOL thats a minor detail considering what we have to look forward to.
  • Denise - browns57

I went ahead and mailed my 25# box qith the USPS! Everything he had asked for is in there except for one tshirt I couldn't find.  He should have the box next Monday or Tuesday.  Keep your fingers crossed it doesn't get lost in the mail.
  • sbarber

@brown57: I'm sure it will arrive just fine and he will be one happy sailor :-)
  • Christa (Proud Navy Mom)

I just spoke with my son.  He received the box of clothing I sent to him.  He was in good spirits and waiting in line to get his hair cut.  It does this mom's heart good to hear from her Sailor.  :)

  • sbarber

@Colby'sproudmom: They can have Xbox's, computers, etc I don't see why he couldn't have that if your concerned have him as his Chief but, I'm betting the answer is yes he can.
  • sbarber

@Christa: Must of have been haircut day lol mine got one yesterday too. And its fan freaking tastic to hear from them so much more often now but, this is spoiling us we will start all over with the no contact when they get deployed :-( but that'll be awhile so I'm just going to enjoy it while I can.
  • sbarber

So my husband just called me some of you may know this but we own a truck and he drives cross country well guess who's going to be in Meridian MS tomorrow seeing my baby NOT ME ugh I'm so jealous but happy for them. NOT FAIR!!!!!!!
  • Christa (Proud Navy Mom)

Note to self:  When hubby is sick, check electronics being packed for shipment to son.  Otherwise, DVD player will be shipped in place of the video game system.  LOL...
  • Christa (Proud Navy Mom)

I know exactly what you mean, sbarber!  All too soon our Sailors will be deployed and communication will again slow to a snail pace.  Like you, I plan to enjoy this additional communication as long as it lasts.
  • sbarber

@Christ OMG that made me laugh thank your husband LOL bet your son was surprised to say the least LOL I bet he and his roommates were looking forward to that gaming system LOL dang men.............

@Colby's mom :-( yeah indeed but I am happy for them. It's just our time with him was so short they lost his medical records so Friday after PIR he spent hours running them down and he flew out pretty early Saturday and after being in Great Lakes for 4mths I feel cheated you know....I miss him so much :-(

Sorry guys I needed to vent thanks for letting me.

  • Christa (Proud Navy Mom)

Yes, sbarber he was definitely surprised!  I received a text message from him earlier today that read, "You mailed me the blu-ray player..."

LOL... so NOT what he was expecting!

  • sbarber

@Christa Omg your making me laugh THANK YOU. How funny I bet he was like what the he{{ is going on are they crazy lol. ;-)
  • Christa (Proud Navy Mom)

LOL... yes!  I am sure he was wondering.  :)
  • Christa (Proud Navy Mom)

Hubby is referring to the incident as "The Epic Fail".  ROFL!!!  Boys and their toys!  LOL!!!
  • TXMom

Hello All, My sailor arrived in Meridian, MS last night after 11 months in GL (medical hold etc after Basic).  He sounds like he has landed in Heaven. He flew from OHare to Atlanta, then from Atlanta directly to Meridian. If you have sailors flying directly to Meridian, they just need to be prepared to take a cab from the airport. My son, said it cost $23 bucks.  He also said the staff at the base was ready for him and he got into his new barracks with no issues.  They toured the base this morning and he said it is very nice! In his barracks, there are four "bedrooms" each with three beds, a private bathroom, microwave and fridge.  There is also a common living area with a flat screen TV.  He did say the base is in the middle of now where (which we all knew) but that the facilities are great.  I know this may be alot of information for those of you with sailors already there, but for those of you have sailors going to Meridian, I thought you might find this useful.   I don't know about the Liberty Phases yet, I think he has to Phase up again, as he had full Liberty at GL (cause he was there sooo long).
  • sbarber

@TXMom: We are from Tx too :-)  you got me beat LOL my son was only there 4 months due to a knee injury. And he has been in MS now for a month. He really likes it there and he said the same thing about the staff and the cabs. He was so excited to earn liberty so I know that your son will be as well it will be hard for him having to start that all over :-( hope all goes well and welcome to our little group.

@Christa: Hope the hubby is feeling better and you get your dvd player back real soon. My husband and son had a really nice visit Saturday, it almost didn't happen though my son had a tough time finding a liberty buddy since it was in the afternoon when my husband got there but it all worked out. The local cab co. was even trying to help us out LOL he went door to door mod to mod until he found someone. But it all worked out :-)

  • Denise - browns57

My son received his box of clothes yesterday which worked out perfectly for him, he also had received his green dot.  I saw a picture of him on facebook with a regular tshirt and shorts last night.  He then sent me a text msg asking if I could send him a couple other things. So off to the postoffice on my lunch hour.

  • Christa (Proud Navy Mom)

HA! HA! sbarber!!  I think my son has decided to keep the DVD player.  :-)
  • sbarber

@Christa do you just wonder what they are going to do with all this "stuff" when they have to pack up and fly out???? I sure am LOL we have raised a generation of instant gratification kids LOL what have we done. Poor hubby will now have to replace the blue ray player now ha ha or maybe he really meant to do that...humm food for thought LOL So I had to send a box of "FOOD" to my son can you imagen that oatmeal, ramen noodles, tuna, snacks, blah blah blah oh and don't forget bowls, can opener etc....... I mean really. He said that the food isn't as good as boot camp and they get tired of Subway OMG what have we done. But it was still cheaper for me to send than him to take a cab to Meridian and back and go buy it for his self isn't that horrible. And they get a "DISCOUNT" OMG really $25 one way????

@brown57: That's good timing glad it all worked out so well. I know he's a happy camper. Get used to those trips to the post office. I'm telling ya geeze. 3 hots and a cot my booty :-) momma still has to worry about them :-)

  • Denise - browns57

@sbarber, I had the same thought, that he is going to have to ship all this stuff home or purshase another duffle bag, if that's even an option.  The first box I sent him was a dell computer box stuffed full, the 2nd was alot smaller box.  He has purchased a laptop since he has been there and a few other items I'm sure.  He had thought about asking for his Wii but has opted for it to say at home.  I think he is thinking about getting everything back home and consentrating on his classes.  His LS school should be only 5 to 6 weeks long, he is thinking he will be home by Thanksgiving.  I am hoping for that too since my daughter & her boyfriend won't be home for Christmas.  Thanksgiving might be the only holiday when we will all be home.  Who knows where my son will be at Christmas.  I hope my oldest son, daughter in law & granddaughter are planning on being home for Christmas.  This will be our first year without one of the kids at home.

My son hasn't said anything about the food, I will have to ask him the next time I talk to him.

@Christa - So if your son is keeping the DVD player does he still want the game system?

  • sbarber

@browns57: The holidays are going to be tough for all of us no matter what and I fear thats not going to change even if they are all home for the holiday they still have to leave. I know that they can buy an extra duffle bag LOL but they are going to have to learn to down size LOL or at the very least prioritize (hope I spelled that right) My son got the box of food yesterday and he said "It's GREAT" poor thing happy about dry goods. That's sad.....
  • Carolee

Question.  Our Grandson is graduating from basic this Friday, Oct 28.  Can he bring his cell phone and lap top computer to A School?  His dad seems to think that he cannot have those items until he has been at the Meridian, MS A school for 3 weeks.  However, everyone else on Navy for Moms say it is o.k. to give your sailor his or her cell phone and or lap top at the airport.  Anyone have

answers to my questions?  Hope so.

  • NYfan A School

    Carolee,

We gave our son his laptop and cellphone at the airport on Saturday morning after PIR.

They are allowed to have them right away.

Hope you are going to PIR, it is wonderful to see the new sailors. A proud moment.

  • Carolee

Thanks for getting back to me.  Yes, we are going to PIR.  We are very excited.  I am sure it will be very emotional.  Carolee
  • sbarber

@Carolee: I'm sure his dad is just passing along what he has heard, all of the A schools are different and some have to earn their devices just like their liberty. But happily as NYFan has said our kids in MS get them right away. Welcome aboard and glad to see ya'll have made it to PIR I have seen  you on RTC's facebook page :-) it's a great experience all be the time with them afterwards to short. Have a greeat day.
  • Carolee

Hi sbarber.  Thanks for replying.  Isn't it great that we can go from the RTC's facbook page to the A school face book page.

Do you know how many different A schools they have at Meridian?  Our sailor will be training in logistics.  How about yours?

  • Denise - browns57

@Carolee - My son is in A school for logistics also, he arrived there 10/08, we made it to the airport in time to give him his cell phone before he flew out which was nice.  He texted me all day as he was traveling and then called later to say he had arrived.  It was a long day for them.  Bussed to O'hare at 2:30AM, flight left at 7:00AM, layover in Ft.Worth, flew to Jackson, MS, bussed from there to Meridan.
  • Denise - browns57

@ Colby''sproudmom - I'm not sure what the deal is for Thanksgiving.  We had thought our son would be finishing A school and home for his two weeks just in time for Thanksgiving but now my son is telling me he may be done sooner, if thats the case he will probably miss both Thanksgiving & Christmas. So only time will tell for sure.
  • Carolee

Browns57.  Thanks for the information.  Boy, we are going to have to get to the airport early.  Do you remember what time you got there?

Does your son like logistics?  Where is home for you?  Our grandson is from Murfreesboro, TN (outside of Nashville) and we live in Kerrville, TX (an hour west of San Antonio).

  • sbarber

Colby'sproudmom If he has phased up to a green dot then he can have off base liberty as well as over night liberty he just has to get his CHIT in and your golden. I love A school so much more contact which is wonderful, enjoy PIR it's great but I hear its getting chilly up there.

Carolee There are several schools on the base there in Meridian they have a neat little website you can check out if you just Google it. I didn't realize you were a fellow Texan...we are from Amarillo. My son is in Yoeman school there in MS his is a little longer than some as he is designated to a submarine so he will be there a few more weeks.

browns57 Don't give up hope for the holidays just yet as we all have learned anything is subject to change in the military and he could get to go ahead to his duty station and miss Thanksgiving but get his CHIT in for Christmas. Never give up hope.

  • Carolee

Hi Colby'sproudmom,  How long has your son been at Meridian?
  • Christa (Proud Navy Mom)

Sorry I have not posted in a while.... We've been really busy and then I got sick too boot!

sbarber and browns57, my son decided to keep the blu-ray disk player.  And, of course, my hubby sent him the video game system as well.  LOL... I don't think my son has given a lot of thought as to how he will get all of this back home.  Guess he'll cross that bridge when he gets to it. LOL...  :-)

  • sbarber

Christa (Proud Navy Mom) : Glad your feeling better. Well my son called last night and ask how to cook shrimp on the grill so I'm guessing the chow hall wasn't looking to good yesterday LOL. I bet yor son's room is a popular one TV, DVD and the Xbox that's too funny.

Colby'sproudmom: Wow what a small world huh. There are just a couple of us from Amarillo on here and we have coffee once in  awhile and chit chat, we went to Tx Roadhouse a few weeks ago for the America Supports you Texas fund raiser. Hope your son enjoy's MS and I know you are looking forward to PIR its a great experience. Let us know how it goes and if you'd like to join our little group send me a friend request and I'll keep you posted.

  • Denise - browns57

  • Carolee

Our grandson is a Sailor! Yea!  Found out that their flight leaves for Meridian, MS at 11:00 am on Sat.  with a layover at DFW.
  • sbarber

Carolee: Congrats we all can see just how proud you are of him and rightfully so. He will enjoy his time in Meridian especially after where he's been LOL the bus ride from Jackson to Meridian is a beast from what I hear since they are exhausted anyway.

Hope everyone has a great weekend and stays warm. It snowed here today officially 3.1 inches where we live almost 5. BURRR!!!!!!!

  • Carolee
