Hello everyone! I have not posted for a long time. My son is in his 6th year in the Navy. He obtainew his FMF about a year ago, and he came back from deployment overseas this past April. He is slated to go to Preventative Medicine school in March 2017. It has been a long journey. He is a Petty Officer 3rd Class, and he is trying hard to get promoted. We shall see what the Navy has in store for him. I hope you all are well.
  • velvetlace

    TennMom -
Yes, time does fly by quicker than I like at times. My sailor is suppose to start Preventative Medicine School in March 2017. He is really looking forward to the school.
    How is your sailor doing?
Have a great day! I hope to hear from you soon.

Can anyone tell me if they are allowed/able to have internet access in their rooms or is the only way to get access is thru a mobile hot  spot?

I want to stay active with this group. My son is a almost 6 year Navy corpsman. He will be going to San Antonio, Texas for C School in March 2017 for Preventative Medicine. He had to reenlist for 3 and 1/2 years and deploy to get the C School. Does any Navy Mom know much about this C School?
  • Lauren - Ship 11 Div 317

Staying active, I don't post alot, but love the information.  I have a corpsman in Japan and another currently in A School.

Anyone have the issue where a sailor got C school on her list and they gave her MedLab, which she doesn't qualify for, she never took Chemistry and is terrified and pretty much giving up before she even starts it.

  • strgzrmn

    Commenting to stay active:

My son finishes A school in one week then goes to C school in Portsmouth VA for hemodialysis tech. I miss him like crazy...He sent me this pic last night :)

Marcy, my son is now longer in the Navy and is attending College to complete his degree in Hospital Management.  I love to keep in touch with the fellow Navy Moms but if room is needed, please do delete me.  I cannot express enough how much support this group provided me throughout all his service, especially deployment.  My prayers for the safety of all our servicemen and good luck to all our Corpsman in C School.  God Bless, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

  • tiffytbe

My son has been in 3 years now. Currently deployed but will be home for Christmas this year. Hope everyone is doing well!

I saw someone post about hotels for FMTB-W graduation. I have some connections. Feel free to contact me.

  • proudascanbe

    I have not posted much, but I also enjoy the information and hearing about others. My son reenlisted and will be headed back to school for MedTech in June. If anyone has been through this program, I'd love to hear from you, as I don't get a lot of info from my Corpsman..(-;

Just to clarify, it is the agency that is making room for new members, not us group admins!  We do hope to be hearing from everyone more in the future; it's participation that makes our group great.  There is NEVER a dumb question.  We're all here for each other for mutual support through this crazy ride, to celebrate things large and small, and to make lifelong friends sharing a unique bond along the way.

    KayDeeMomma,

One of the benefits of having a daughter-in-law from our hometown is that my son doesn't have a lot of choice about coming home when they can. LOL.

I grew up as a military kid and only saw my grandparents when we were moving. I would hate that!
  • chrisb4james

My son is currently a Petty Officer 3rd Class and has taken the test for advancement to 2nd Class several times, unsuccessfully. One of the complaints I've heard him make is that the exam questions always seem to concentrate mostly on areas outside of his (pharmacy). This has been discouraging for him - any thoughts or suggestions from anyone?

  • UFQ202- Ship 12, Div 231

I am a retired HM1 and hear the same thing from my HM2. As I tried to explain to him the advancement test is over ALL areas of being a Corpsman. They need to know admin, patient care, preventive med etc. There is a study guide out there. They need to know more than just their job. Tell your Corpsman good luck.

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

chrisb4james - you've touched on something that is a huge issue among corpsmen.  With 39 NECs, it's unfair that the exam devotes a large part to one that has a C school (dental is another area that goes into way too much detail for those who didn't have that paticular C school).  Suggest that he find out if there is a study group being offered at his command; or put one together himself.  He can also access the current study material for this cycle's bibliography (they call it "the bib" for short) at http://www.navybmr.com/active-duty/hm/.  You might want to look at it yourself and since you know your corpsman well, suggest some study techniques that suit him best.  Many corpsmen, for example, rely on making their own flashcards.  There are common. popular acronyms for memorizing certain things too; corpsmen in his chain of command should be able to point him to those.  Just sent you a friend request too :)

Hello all!  Question ..... My daughter is in C school in Texas.  She has been sick for almost 2 months!!!!  She has gone to medical several time and all they do is give her allergy meds (she has no allergies) and/or cough meds and motrin.  She keeps going back telling them she is not better and prob needs antibiotics.  She says they blow her off!!!  This is really frustrating me.  Does anyone know who higher up they can go to in order to get some support and the proper meds????  Im worried she has an infection and they seem to not give a rat about her ....

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

anxiousmom - So sorry she's not feeling well. I'm not sure what advice to give you, other than have her talk to her instructors, perhaps they can give her some guidance.

Chrisb4james, here's a closed group created for corpsmen, by corpsmen, on FB that your son can request to join:  "Navy Corpsman Enlisted Advancement Program" - https://www.facebook.com/groups/NMTSC.EAP/

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Regarding the advancement exams, here's a study opportunity for corpsmen at Naval Hospital Beaufort, SC.

The dates for the HM Enlisted Advancement Program (EAP) Review Course at Naval Hospital Beaufort, South Carolina for the March 2017 Navywide Advancement Examinations are:
    E5s for E6 Review: 23 - 28 January 2017
    E4s for E5 Review: 30January -3 February 2017
    E3s for E4 Review: 7 - 10 February 2017

  • Tamme

So sorry to hear that your daughter is sick.  My boys always ran into the same issue - they only dispense Tylenol.  I could tell you some stories - so hard as a Mom not to be there to help.  My suggestion is to tell her to go to off-base emergency care - her Tricare will cover it.  Hope she feels better soon.

  • Lauren - Ship 11 Div 317

I agree with Tamme, we know our bodies, if she still feel sick, there is something more than allergies going on there!

  • TexasDocMom

As a Texan, I have to tell you that Central Texas is Allergy Hell, many newcomers are overwhelmed by the symptoms even if they had never suffered before.  Beyond the normal respiratory issues, the light headedness, the dizziness, the overwhelming feeling of weakness comes on and doesn't let up. In Austin, this time of year, we also have "Cedar Fever", brought on by junipers, It's hell. Sometimes it doesn't affect new comers until they've been in the area for a few years, sometimes the first round of it will knock you  to your knees. Ragweed was especially vicious this year, and mold is always a problem. Probably those corpsmen are not being uncaring, it's just allergy season in Texas. Hopefully, they give her directions on the antihistamines, you need to take them daily, and we usually start about 2 weeks before the pollination begins to build them up in the body. It can develop into sinus infections and bronchitis, so that needs to be watched.

  • Bobbi H

anxiousmom, what TexasDocMom said.  This is a horrible allergy time in Texas.  It will get worse before it gets better, as now we have "cold fronts" or "blue northers" coming down and bringing whatever is in the air up north along with it. Sometimes the cold air helps flush out the air of pollutants.  Also, depending on the dorm she is in, they seem to have a "mold" problem...not that I've heard that it is admitted. She just needs to be persistent. She may even want to try on a weekend and get a different doc.

  • Bobbi H

I keep seeing the post from the last round of advancement testing. My HM has now taken the exam 3 times, all 3 PNA. He didn't anticipate an advancement the first time, as he was 2 weeks out of A school, however, he did pass the exam. The next 2 he also passed, but said the PNA had to do with his last annual eval rating, and that mathmetically he could not advance.  He will have the same issue come spring, as it is working from the same eval.

On a totally different note, he has been nominated for the Blue Jacket Award at his Command. That alone makes a momma proud. I'm not sure when he has boards or when the final announcement is, but in my book, it seems exciting to just be nominated. Hopefully having the nomination in his records will help with advancement as well.

  • Tamme

So proud Bobby H.  Pass along congratulations.

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Wow Bobby H, he's definitely doing something right!  For others - there is much that goes into an eval, including such things as community volunteerism.

TDM, so right!  True in other places too.  When we moved to Hawaii, my husband was hit hard and we couldn't figure it out - he was surprised to find out allergies were the cause, as he'd never had them before.  Can surely make one miserable...

My son was given hard orders to report to Camp Lejeune i was given hard orders to report to Camp Lejeune April 1st what can we expect has anyone done this before will he be deployed with Marines if you have anything to share please feel free we're new to the military and have no idea what texpect

    ct
  • TexasDocMom

Hi, nikki, I'm not sure how reservists works, and since it's been quite a while since my son took his FMTB training, a lot has changed. At one point, when the US was very active in two combat zones,, pretty much all graduating corpsmen took this training in a "be prepared" scenario.

My son loved his years serving with the Marines, he still considered himself more Marine than sailor when he left the Navy after 7 years in .

  • mikes mom

    Nikki
I'm agree with TDM... my son was stationed at Camp Lejeune for 5 years.... Though he is Blue side now he went through 2 deployments with his Marines... He's very proud of his time there....
  • nikki

Thank you ladies so much for your response. I just need to settle my nerves. Its very nerve racking not knowing anything.
  • mikes mom

    Nikki
I know how you feel.... We have all walked in your shoes..... You ask as many questions as you need to.... We are here for you ❤
  • TexasDocMom

You're not alone, Nikki, and believe me, we all know how you're feeling.

Never feel self conscious about coming here to ask questions, talk or rant...it's what we do....

  • nikki

From heart thank you soon much. There has been so much unknowns for us. Is the navy always like this?
  • mikes mom

    YES
Just when you think you have it all figured out something will change.... This group has helped me so much.... I have truly made some life long friends... It's a bond like no other....
please just know you are Never Alone...
  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Nikki, a few questions:  has your son been assigned to a unit, or to the hospital at Camp Lejeune?  It could be either.  Has he been through Field Medical Training Battalion at Camp Johnson yet?  (Camp Johnson is next to Camp Lejeune.)  Did your son just graduate from "A" School; or did he attend a "C" School following "A" School in San Antonio?  With more information, we can be more helpful!  The deal with being a corpsman in the Navy is that there is a LOT to learn about it, and as they advance, there's always more for them and for us to learn.  You will get used to pinning your son down and getting as much info from him as you can LOL

Also, please join this group:  Camp Lejeune and FMTB-East Moms, Families and Friends

  • nikki

He actually graduates today from a school fort Sam Houston. He thought he would be getting leave and then going to Virginia to work at the hospital. Last night he received hard orders that coming home was not going to happen and he needs to report to camp lejuene on the 1st of April. As far as I know he has not been assigned a unit.
  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Nikki, I just saw in your Discussion above that your son is a reservist.  It looks like he is being sent to Field Medical Training Battalion, an eight-week training program that nearly every corpsman goes through eventually.  Going through FMTB does NOT mean that he would stay on at Camp Lejeune afterward.

If he says that he is headed to a hospital in Virginia, then he is likely headed to Naval Medical Center Portsmouth (Virginia) immediately after completing FMTB.

You can read about FMTB here Read this to learn about FMTB:  "What is Field Medical Training Battalion?"

If it is indeed FMTB that he's headed to, join that group for Camp Lejeune Moms and look through the information in the Discussion Forums, including a link to the official FMTB-East sit an a list of what he needs to bring.

  • nikki

I am sorry I mean the 4th is his date to report

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

It still could be that he is headed to Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune?

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

If he has orders to report, then he must know where and to whom he is to report  :)  Let us know!

  • TexasDocMom

Ma Navy is always in charge...take it from a Navy brat born on a NAS base out of country, a Marine's sister and a Navy mom....

You'll know more in a few days, be  nice to yourself today, do something you like to do...get some exercise, go shopping, walk the dog..whatever it is...

  • nikki

Where do these guys deploy to? What type of environment is it?
  • TexasDocMom

Depends...my son's first deployment was a MEU, Marine Expeditionary Unit on the USS Bataan....they did a Mediterranean tour....they are just around in case of need, do some good will building by docking and working building schools, etc. They were on the Lebanon border during some dust up...he said "I'm just watching these Marines rat race humvees up and down the dunes..."  His second deployment was to Iraq. Every member of his unit came back safe.

Don't start building scenarios in your head, once he gets his Navy legs under him,  he will keep  you informed, I'm sure. The CO's make sure they call home, and give their families up dates. You'll have a parent rep to check with.

  • EmilyD

Nikki, Every single one of us had felt the worry and panic that you are experiencing. It's ok. Getting orders to report to lejeune is not necessarily a ticket for deployment. When my son got his orders for Pendleton, it was stated immediately that he would be reporting to FMTB and which unit he would be serving with upon completion, so your son's orders may have nothing to do with going greenside. And if they do, I promise you it will still be ok. My sons last deployment was blue side in Africa over the whole Ebola epidemic and it ended up being one of the most enriching experiences of his life. Deployment doesn't have to mean negative things. It can be adventure and life experience! Now my son has been field training and doing work ups with his batallion (also a MEU) for their upcoming deployment in July since last July, and I take much comfort that these kids are so well prepared for anything. Just pray and have faith and you and your son will get through whatever comes your way. We all have your back.
  • nikki

I'm so greatful for all the help. The support is so kind and touching it makes me emotional. Thanks again
