USS Chicago

For anyone with loved ones on the Chicago sub.

My husband is a machinist mate, as well. They probably work together every day!

Hi Rene, just wondering if you know where your sailor is going yet. My husband came home yesterday (didn't tell me what sub he's going on - just realized that now...) but that he would be doing a 3 month augmentation starting end of JUly/beginning of August. I'm going to have to ask about what sub he'll be on, though....

Hi, My husband is apart of the USS Key West but traveling with USS Chicago for their homeport move to Guam. We've been emailing back and forth but all of a sudden two days ago my emails stopped going through and I stopped receiving emails from him. I was wondering if anyone else had this issue. I am very worried and just want to know that hes ok.

  • huladangelo

Emails are still going through and everyone's fine. I know they are very busy right now but there has not been a stop on communications.

This is the USS Chicago, SSN 721 out of Pearl Harbor moving to Guam.

Thanks sooo much.. I can sleep easier.... Im truly a worry wart and it doesnt take much... Maybe is it my computer then?? I usually get a compacsub sailor message saying my message was delivered to the boat and i havent received those for the last 4 messages i sent out... Also a friend of mine whos boyfriend is on the boat says she hasnt heard from her boyfriend since Saturday...

  • huladangelo

Did you get an undeliverable message or just haven't gotten the comsubpac? If you just haven't gotten the comsubpac, it just means that they're slower reading through all of the emails. As for your friend, the boat is INCREDIBLY busy and they had some stuff going on over the weekend (I'm not sure if I can write what so I'll leave it at that - nothing bad, though!) so he BF may not have gotten a chance to write. I usually only get one email a week from my husband. Especially on this underway, things are especially busy and stressful for everyone. Just hang in there!! It's not much longer!

  • NekitaJ

Really appreciate your comments... My husband works in Radio (ET) so I usually get at least one everyday... But i dont care about the emails as much as i do knowing that they're ok... Yes... I can not wait so that I can stop pulling my hair out. Im going to go gray at the age of 24. :) Thanks so much again...

  • NekitaJ

Oh and I just havent received the comsubpac messages... I didnt get an undeliverable message...

  • huladangelo

One of my close friend's husband's is a radioman on the boat and so between her, my husband's, and my other friend who's husband is a cook, we can all piece together what's going on, lol. Feel free to email me anytime, I definitely don't mind helping out.

Greetings to all.  My son leaves for Guam on Sunday and will be on the USS Chicago.  I am thrilled to have found this page!  He is fresh out of Groton.

  • ChrisNukeEMmom

My son arrived in Guam on Tuesday.  Does anyone know how to find more undated info on the Chicago?

  • ccpoet

USS Chicago has an active facebook page...

Hello all - my son Zac joined the Chicago in October - his first duty station. We are proud and excited, but sad about not having him home for Christmas for the first time in 23 years! Glad to have found this site and looking forward to getting toknow some fellow Chicago moms.

Hello. My son is heading to the USS Chicago in April. Anyone still have a loved one on the sub? If my son has a Verizon cell phone, can we still communicate while he is in Guam with no extra costs?
  • Scrapmom61

My son is currently on the Chicago. He got a new phone when he got to Guam and uses calling cards to call home. I don't believe there is a Verizon tower on Guam. We mostly communicate through Facebook and Skype (which is hard with the 14 hr time difference).
  • Rhondazacsmom

My son joined the Chicago last October. He loves Guam but works so much he does not have a lot of time to enjoy it. He is a nuke (MM3) and they are pulling long hours right now. He had to get a local phone too - his ATT phone worked but it was WAY expensive!. We Facetime when we can - but with the time difference it is hard. What are your sailors' rates Scrapmom and 40inthexbox?

  • 40intheboxShip11Div155

My son is ET NAV. He met someone the other day who had come from the sub and the guy said the Chicago has a great supportive group of guys. Is it possible to find out when the sub is set to go on deployment or is that kept under wraps? Thank you for the cell phone info.
  • Rhondazacsmom

40 you might want to check out the Sub Moms group. It have lots of information about sub service - it's in the middle section of the page. There is one on arrivals and departures. For security reasons they can't release exact dates and your sailor can't tell you either. The Chicago has a Facebook page you will want to like. There is also a FB page called Chicago FRG (family resource group). They provide information about the sub and help organize halfway boxes ( read about them on the sub page). To join this page your sailor will have to send the administrator a message that they agree. Have you gotten the ombudsman info from your sailor? That is another good source of information.

Thank you Rhonda! What did we do before internet!
  • Rhondazacsmom

Glad to help. Wasn't that long ago I was asking the same questions. Glad to have a fellow Chicago mom to talk to!

My son graduates this Friday in Ballston Spa and his first assignment is the USS Chicago. His family and I are excited, but of course there is so much not known. He is scheduled to report mid July. We would appreciate any advice and suggestions.
  • BillysMom

    Hi twp,

Our son has been on the USS Chicago for 2 1/2 years.  The biggest adjustment was the time difference.  I have Guam time on my phone, so I don't call him in the middle of the night.  My husband and I both have facebook accounts so we can all leave messages and photos for each other.  It can take 2 weeks to a month for packages to arrive, so plan ahead for special occasions.  It's a long way from home, so we try to stay in touch as much as possible when they are  in Guam.  He loves the island, though, and spends lots of time in the water, diving, fishing, etc.  He also got a local phone, much cheaper than his US mainland plan.  Luckily our calling plan includes Guam. Check out the phone availability as it can get expensive.  No doubt, there is adventure ahead for your sailor!  Goodluck!

  • BillysMom

Also, the USS Chicago has a FB page, check it out.  They are very good about posting pics from special events and ceremonies.

  • twp

Thank you BillysMom for your response and information. Will certainly be checking in on the local phone. Glad to hear your son is enjoying Guam. I think mine will too.
  • almanv

My son is in the Chicago since 2 years. I am a proud mother of my son because being in a submarine for long time is not easy, but he is doing good making friends and enjoying the island.

  • twp

My son is currently home on leave before his first assignment. He will leave for Guam in July and is looking forward to this next step in his time with the Navy. In scrolling through previous entries, I saw a comment referring to a SubMoms page, where would I locate that?
  • Proudmama

Hello all.  New to this group.  My son has been on the USS Chicago for about a year but just qualified for his fish pin around July 6.  I know he is very happy but we have not talked to him much since they are not in port.

  • twp

My son has just arrived in Guam. Not sure what he is doing as the boat is not in port. I am totally not familiar with the Navy or other military. What is a fish pin?
