Okay ladies, you are in good hands. Keep the prayers coming my way, I am hoping for great results from my surgery tomorrow and hope to come back soon and report that I am cancer free.
@SOBE Wishing you all the best with the surgery!! Ma ygod guide the surgeon's hands, steady them as they do what is needed and you recover well. Keep us posted as we keep you in thoughts and prayers!
Thanks Sharon, and everyone else who sent well wishes my way. I'm doing okay, very sore but hanging in there. I won't get results until 10/18, but my doctor said he didn't see any visual signs of cancer - only an old worn out ovary and my fallopian (sp?) tubes were 5 times larger than normal. Breast biopsy should be back by my appt date too, so I will keep you all posted. Thanks again for all the prayers.
Oh boy, that makes it really tough. I know that the nukes have a long weekend for the holiday, but that pretty much means nothing for the new sailors.
that is wonderful that she is graduation earlier than expected; not something you typically hear.
I am afraid that you may have to wait to hear from her; which I know could be a long time. I hope that she is good at writing whenever she can. She should know soon if she is g&g & the other details of the weekend. I think my son knew about a month before PIR. One thing about the nukes, they do let them know what's going on. It was all laid out as to where he was going & when, he even had his address at GC well before he graduated.
Just want to share some Grad & Go info for those who have a sailor that is Grad & Go to Great Lakes. My step-daughter was Grad & Go to Great Lakes. Her PIR was October 15th. She insisted all along that she would not be able to spend the night in the hotel with us after graduation, but because of postings in this group and others I realized that her information might be incorrect. If your sailor is Grad & Go to Great Lakes, there is a very good chance that they will be able to spend the night with you at your hotel. They will not know that for certain until they arrive at the A school part of the base in Great Lakes. These are the only sailors who may get to spend the night with their families so make sure you plan for that possibility. We had the hotel hold a room for our daughter for Friday and Saturday night so she would have a nice place to stay near us in the event that she was allowed to stay off base. We had until 6:00 PM on Friday evening to cancel that part of our reservation. We learned at 3:00 PM on Friday afternoon when she called for us to pick her up that she would be able to stay with us overnight. Be sure to plan ahead for that possibility. We did have a problem finding her when she called to be picked up. Buckley Road dead ends at a detour because of road construction and she had no idea about directions to get there. We kept hearing that grad & go to Great Lakes meant moving across the street. Not really true. The gate we needed to use to pick her up was probably at least a mile or more from the gate we used to attend the PIR. It was very confusing and complicated by the construction and detour. If anyone would like the directions I would be happy to share. Message me and I will e-mail you. PIR was awesome.
Yes, my son is grad and go and would love directions to pick him up when he arrives at school. Also, are we going to need a different pass to get him at that point or will the pass we downloaded work?
There are many different A Schools at Great Lakes. So depending on which A School your talking about, it could be several different gates. My son went to Corpsman A School, which is literally across the way from where PIR is held. He could look out his barracks window and see the PIR building. I guess you would have to have their rate (job) and maybe go to that school group and find out specific gate information. Hope this helps.
Hey everyone - glad to see that we have seasoned moms to answer all these questions. I've been off-line for about 4 weeks, but my surgery went well and I am recovery slowly but surely. Good news - it wasn't cancer! I won't be on this site as often as I used to be, but will check in more often. Thanks to all of you who held me up in prayer - it worked!!!!! Love, Lisa
His PIR date is 1/14/11 and I was wondering if there is any evidence of him being listed as Grad N Go by DIV number of job assigned? Any insight from you seasoned Navy Moms would be greatly appreciated.
hello everyone! my bf is currently in boot camp and i just found out he is Grad n Go. However, his A school is in GL. What does this mean for PIR weekend?? His rate is GM (gunners mate) if that helps??
CarlyRose - It depends on if they have room for him to move into the barracks when he graduates from bootcamp. My son went through A School at Great Lakes for Corpsman and was not grad n go, so we had to have him back Friday, Saturday andy Sunday by 8:00 p.m. Those that were grad n go after him were able to stay with family the entire weekend.
is it worth it to book my flight untill monday? if he is not grad and go i want to spend all the time i can with him. Also i heard the first 2 divisions are usually grad and go, he isn't but i do know he is going ot attempt to change his job, so my decision is up in the air. im thinking aout jsut booking everything until monday and possibly making a little vacation out of it. any suggestions?
I was just wondering.... my boyfriends PIR date is 1/14/11 and he said that he will be a grad n go. After bootcamp, he will go to A school in San Antonio, Texas. Does anyone know how early he will most likely leave if he is a grad n go ?
I have heard only the recruit knows exactly when he will leave for A school if he/she is grad n go. Write them and ask them if they know this information. There is a questionaire in the above discussions that you can print out and send to your loved one.
My son his grad n go to Pensacola, FL and he said he will be leaving saturday morning.
Hello everyone - it's been a long time since I've been on this site. I had some health issues (all good now), and then life just got really busy. I feel bad, since I started this group and haven't been on for so long. But it looks like everyone is helping the new moms - which is what this site is all about.
My sailor is just about to finish C-School in Norfolk. He really misses the Pensacola area (better weather!), but is very excited about his first assignment coming up in late January. He will be stationed in Gaeta, Italy aboard the USS Mt. Whitney for 2+ yrs. We are flying to the East Coast to wish him well in a couple of weeks. It will be strange not having him home for Christmas. I need to save my penny's so I can visit him in Italy. I will try to check this group more often, but will not be able to spend the hours on this site that I used to when Brandon was in BC and A-School - my marriage can't handle it!
my bfs PIR is 1/07 and is GnG but is staying in GL for Aschool. I have heard from many that he will most like get to spend the weekend (overnights) with me and his family that. However, I got a short call from him this past weekend and he said his orders say to report on 1/8. What does this mean? Does that mean he'll get to stay that first night with me but not the rest? or just that he will have to report back everynight at 8 like everyone else??
@Laura grumpy - your son is the only that will know for sure if he is g&g. In your next letter ask him if he is g&g.
It could change either way up to the day before PIR. My son is listed as g&g (PIR 1/14/11) and I continuously ask him if his orders have changed or stayed the same.
Be patient and go with the flow...... :-)
@ Kathy: My son is also an IT, so maybe I can help you. They are actually sent to Corry Station, a small base a few miles from the big base in Pensacola. My son loved it there, very home-like, friendly and close to the beach. Being a small base, they phase up for liberty faster. They also tend to "class-up" faster there too (start their schooling within a few weeks after arriving there). The classes are self paced, the average person finishes in about 10-12 weeks. Then they may still stay there for a week or so before they move on. Not all IT's go on to C-school, it depends on their orders. My son needed to learn specialized things so he could do his job on the ship he will be on. My son was a GnG, so we had Friday after PIR to spend with him, then met him at the airport at "dark thirty" in the morning. We were allowed to go through security and sit with him in the terminal until his flight left at 1pm. Please read the main info on this page, as we want people to remember that although there may be Norms, each sailors experience can be different.
Oh... and join the IT Moms group if you haven't already, there's a wealth of info there too!
@ Angie: Long time no see! Hope you are well. I'm rarely on this anymore, but I am trying to check this page at least once a week.
Happy New Year to everyone! 8 days until we see our sailor in Norfolk. Lisa/Sobe
I have a question about meeting them at the airport. It says ubove to show ID to the airline and if the aailor is with you. What if you get there after your sailor has passed through security. are you out of luck then?
That is what we plan on doing too. I printed & mailed the GNG form from above asking for airline, flight and time information to my son. He will fill it out and give it to us after the PIR ceremony. This way if we miss each other we hopefully can still meet up at the USO center in the airport.
anyone can go & meet your sailor at the airport. you will need to get the info from your sailor as to which airport they will be flying out of and then the airlines/flight & time. we were able to meet up with our son at Midway and then go through security and walk him to his gate. USO volunteer made sure ALL family memebers received a gate pass to get thru security. mail your SR the grad n go form in the above discussion to fill out and give to you after graduation.
from my experience at my son's graduation any sailors in Nuke or Aviation will leave on Saturday for A school. Thye will get liberty on Friday after the ceremony has concluded.
My SRs PIR is 3/18....rumor has it that his division is Grad n Go. His letter stated that they think they are going to be. At what point will there be confirmation? Does anyone know?
If he indicates he is grad n go now he probably will be...but could change up to the day before graduation. Keep communicating through letters and phone calls when they come. You may want to send him the G&G form from above he can fill it out and give it to you once liberty begins after gradaution.
Thank you redsmom! Preparing ourselves that he probably is G&G --- will enjoy every minute that we have with him. He said to make sure we purchase REFUNDABLE tickets just in case, so that is what we plan to do. Will print the form and send it to him....love the information this website provides.....and you seasoned moms!!
This was offically posted today from the U.S. Navy Recruit Training Command (RTC) Facebook Page.
U.S. Navy Recruit Training Command Grad & Go refers to those recruits who are staying in Great Lakes and that is firm. We are in the process of correcting the RDCs who seem to believe that Grad & Go also refers to those recruits flying out of state on Saturday.
Even our trans...portation department no longer uses the term "Grad & Go." The confusion lies in the fact that a couple years recruits also flew out of state on Friday afternoons following the graduation ceremony. RTC stopped doing that a couple of years ago.
So, regardless if your recruit states he/she was told they are Grad & Go and are leaving Saturday, that is the incorrect term for them. They are a Saturday departure.
Other websites using the term Grad & Go for Saturday departures only add to the confusion.
So, once again, here is the official RTC definition as to what is a Grad & Go recruit: Recruits checking into A School at Great Lakes on the same day as graduation.
Please we need to put this information out any time we can, and we need to stop using the "incorrect" terms when addressing issues on the RTC Facebook page or here within out tight little group, it only adds to the confusion, just like the RTC Facebook page says.
It's been about a week since I found out that my son was a Sat departure, I am just glad that I am going to get to see him even if it is for one evening. I am going to have a plan a, b & c.
If your Sailor is a Saturday Departure, GO WITH THEM TO THE AIRPORT, if at all possible. We were able to see him interact with his new Shipmates and hear more stories about his Boot Camp experience. My husband did not go, but me and his Fiancée did. I wouldn’t trade this time with him for the world. He had to be there at 0100 hours, we got there about an hour later, they were still dividing up into departure groups so we had plenty of time before we all had to go through security which opens at 0500, the security was no problem either, they let us though with a GATE PASS. This was at Midway. Once our Sailor was handed his boarding pass, we just handed the Ticketing people our ID’s (must be a driver’s license or STATE ID card). The reason I mention this is because we had “military ID’s” and they didn’t want us using these. I also was able to get photos of the people that he hung out with during Boot Camp. This is a MUST. Please do this if you can even if you get little or NO sleep. His Fiancée and I only got 3 HOURS sleep, but we did this, and it was worth every moment.

U.S. Navy Recruit Training Command It's an obsolete term. It used to refer to recruits who flew out of state for A School within hours of graduation. Then it referred only to those recruits staying in Great Lakes for A School. Now it doesn't mean anything.
Recruits who stay in Great Lakes for A School check into their school the same day as graduation. Those going out of state for A School will fly out the following day unless there is an issue with flight availability, then they might be delayed a day or two.
