Well I feel sooo bad, SR called and the only time I went to bathroom w/o cell during work today was........you guessed it; he called. Didn't. Get to speak and I am soooo bummed. All day that cell was glued to me except for 5 mins. :(
onboardMom-sorry you missed the call. When my son was in boot camp, the phone came into the restroom with me. Thank goodness he never called me when I was in there, but I was going to be prepared just in case.
Finally heard from my son, tired and hungry & sore, but essentially OK.
OHHHH Onboard... do not feel bad, I missed the first couple of calls from my boy too when he was in boot camp and the only one that I got after that I was IN the bathroom. hahahah! Well, you can probably figure you will get another call in about 3 weeks. Seems like Forever! Hang in there sista!!!!
Kevin - awesome you heard from him!
Gabby - so glad she heard from him too!
Texas - howdy there.... could Tx be any hotter... it has sucked the energy right out of me! uggggg
Lydia-the heat does seem to suck up your energy, or at least make you less motivated to get anything done outside. Luckily, here in CA we had a bit of a weather break this week. 70 on Tues & 75 on Wed. Of course 90 by yesterday, 95 today, 100 tomorrow and 105 by Sunday (supposedly). What crazy weather. We are doing alot of landscaping and improving our backyard for a graduation party in a few weeks and a wedding a month after that. We were able to get alot done on Tues & Wed due to the lower temperatures.
Onboardmom - i missed my SRs first call too, I just bawled and bawled. Carried land line and cell everywhere I went for Battlestations call, even recorded sound with camera!
Hoooyah Kevinsmom!!! Bravo Zulu! now you can breathe!!
Everyone stay cool and safe this 4th of July! and have FUN!!
I know this is a group for moms but i hope you will accept me :) I am a girlfriend of an aviation rescue swimmer to be. He is in boot-camp currently and his PIR is aug 5th, SO ecstatic. I was wondering if any of you could tell me what A-school was like for your swimmer? He is going to Pensacola for his school, according to his recruiter he will be leaving that saturday after his graduation. I would like to move to Florida while he is in A-school but depending on how long he will be there for will make or break that decision. How long was A-school for your swimmers? What was it like? any information would be SO completely helpful to me. THANK YOU :)
Lyndsi - ALLL are welcome here!!! We are honored that you have joined us! Gosh Id have been totally lost if it had not been for some of the experienced ladies here who have seen me through my sons Pipeline as Rescue Swimmer!!! Soooo - I have posted this (my) pipeline / timeline before I hope it will help you......... Okay my son PIR on 09 / 02 / 2010... He was Grad and Go immediately to Pcola. Now first they must go through NACCS (Naval Aircrew Candidate School) so when he got to Pcola he was on hold from Sept till early November. He finally classed up NACCS and passed.. then he went on hold for RSS (Rescue Swimmer School) (thats the really tough one to pass... 75% attrition rate... So anyway he started that 3 weeks before Christmas.. graduated RSS second week of January... Then went on hold for Sierra A School. Started that in late Feb I believe it was and finished early April and got orders to go to San Diego to his SERE training and FRS training.. He is now (almost one year later) just starting his FRS (about 5 month training) so he is due to finish his Rescue Swimmer Pipeline and be attached to his squadron on Nov 28th... It is a very long Pipeline as most of the mommas who have been here done this can tell you but man is it worth it ..... so be patient you have a lot of supporting to do of your man! So I hope you can figure things out... rememeber that the classification schools he will go through in FL will make or break him and he MUST MUST stay 1000% focused to make it through...... HUGS and let us know any more questions you many have!
Lydia- I as a mom of a hopeful Rescue Swimmer who is also in bc and PIR 08/05/2011, I am grateful for your information, ideas, and wisdom. I am in the same "boat" as Lyndsi.
Lyndsi- Don't worry you are not alone.... We will travel this path together. Keep up the good spirits and always think positive. OUR SRs are doing the best they know how to do so we can also do our BEST. Take care.
Onboard.. so you and Lyndsi boy are together... both will be in an 800 (Spec Ops Div) and they PIR at the same time... wooow ... maybe you two can get togther at the PIR ceremony! How kewl!
Hi Texas Mom.... and I could not have made it with out Texas Mom so you see how we are all here to help each other!!!!!
Lyndsi, welllllll, I can answer for Lydia cuz she posted her son's timeline below (I know it's very confusing).........so he arrived in Pensacola on 9/2/10 and finished his last school, in Pensacola, in April 2011 and then to San Diego.
My son's PIR was 9/3/09 and he finished his last school, in Pensacola, and went to San Diego on August 1, 2010. Length of times vary depending on "hold" times in between schools.
Lyndsi-my son arrived in pcola a couple of days after his graduation at the beginning of october and he left p'cola at the end of May to go to Norfolk for SERE and FRS. So he was in p'cola for about 6 months.
Thank you for all the advice :). I am trying to decide on whether or not i will be moving to Pensacola once he gets there. Both of us want me to but we are iffy because of how up in the air the wait time at A-school is. I guess i just want to be sure tthat he wont be leaving shortly after i get there and get situated, we would really hate for me to be stuck in florida with nothing but a lousy apartment lease.
Lyndsi - sorry if I confused you so also mine was Pcola about 8 months then will be in San Diego for 7 months. Total Pipeline will be 16 months.l....Also rememeber that while in Pcola you will not see too much of him at first.. he will be Phasing up (more freedom off base) and he will be working his arse off to get in and stay in perfect top condition to make it through RSS... A school is easy for these guys.. lots of studying but at that point there is pretty much no failure.. Only NACCS and RSS are the super hard ones . Seems like he will probably have more freedom and longer stay after he leaves Pcola.. just my opinion of course... My son A school after NACCS and RSS was only a month and a half long. Some are a little longer depending on if they get Romeo or Sierra. HUGS everyone!
Okay muster mommas and gfs?? where is everyone?? My buds buddie passed today and has like one week left... my buddy will class up FRS on Monday... sent a bazillion cookies to him and his buddies today... Im pooped!
Hey ladies... starting week two of RSS for my sailor... sounds good today- 5 didn't pass their test today and were rolled back. Let the drops continue! Wow... Hope that everyone else is having a great week.
Hi all, new to this group! My son is currenly @ boot camp with PIR scheduled for 8/5. His contract is for rescue swimmer and I couldn't be prouder. A little worried about him but I guess that's normal! I guess I am one of the lucky ones because I live in Pensacola so we're hoping to see him a lot when he comes back here. Not sure how much free time they give them.
Wendy3650, onboardMom, and Lyndsi ---- do you guys know that you each have a rescue swimmer in Ship 4/Division 817? Just thought I'd introduce you to each other in case you haven't met, LOL!
Lydia-congrats to your sons buddy. And your son must be so excited to start on this last leg before he is all done with training.
Texas mom-thanks for posting the link. Wish they would have done something like that when my son was in boot. I would have loved to have had a pic of him during that time.
Hello all, I'm not a mom...a dad actually lol. I'm looking into joining the Navy. I've gone to MEPS for physical and ASVAB but haven't seen a classifier yet. Just researching several different jobs that would interest me and get as many details as possible before taking the plunge. The AW rating has stood out as one I think I would really enjoy, but my main question or concern rather, is how will my young family be affected? I'm 25 married (4yrs) with a 2yo son & 4mo daughter. We live in FL so it seems training in P-cola would be good as I would be somewhat close to home, but what of FRAC-SERE? Will the Navy PCS my fam out with me, or am I on my own for the 6+ months I'll be taining out there? Any help or advise would be most helpful!
Eric, I myself don't know answers to the family part BUTTT there are a couple of Moms that have been on here who have sons...who have family. So, let's see if they answer.....I haven't seen them on here recently and if they don't answer, I'll see if I can get in touch with them to answer your questions.
Eric... welcome my friend! Well, what ever rate you chose.. .it will always be a challenge for your family... BUT - Im sure they will support you and love you and you them no matter what! Otherwise you would not be going in... there are really no guarantees as to where you will go for various trainings.. etc...other than boot camp in the GLakes.. so you must be flexible.. If you do go RSS... you will spend only a part of your training in Pcola.. you could go San Diego or VA for more... that is the SERE and FRS and then from there who knows... so Im just saying... if you are truly determined to serve in the Navy.. then your family must be willing to understand too! Ill just bet what ever you do you will be great at it! Please stay here with us and ask anything anytime! We are here for you and your family! We do have girl friends and wives here too! The Rescue Swimmer pipeline as all Spec Ops and Forces is a LONG pipeline...
There is a Group here also called Aircrew (go up to Groups and you will find it)... you might post some questions there as well..
Hello Ladies...... it's been a while. My son called with some discouraging news yesterday. It seems quite a few guys in his NACCS class went home over the 4th of July weekend and ended up DOR because of missing family and such. In turn my son started getting some discouraging thoughts as well as having his best roommate move to new barricks as he starts RSS. Praying my son and others won't give in to doubt and deceit placed in their thoughts by the "father of all lies" !!!!!
sarahbear...that's the video! I am really glad my son was not "tagged" in it though with privacy issues. Makes me proud.
Kyle's mom- I think they make 1 or 2 video's per year for recruitment, but I could be wrong.
mama- at least the boys firgured it out before going into RSS. RSS is very brutal and has such a failure rate that they probably figured out that being a SAR really wasn't for them. Tell your son to keep his head up and that he should really talk to recent RSS graduates to get hints on all procedures and what is exactly expected. And as far as "father of all lies"; to tell you the truth, it's probably 100% truth that he has heard. It is NOT easy at all and people probably are telling him the facts trying to prepare him. His heart has to be in it 100%. Am I correct other moms? I hope I am not offending you or scaring you. I shed many of tears as my son went through RSS. My son thought he was 100% ready but rolled d/t 1 slip on a procedure. But he said failure is not an option. The group that rolled, practiced hours a day until the next class. It really takes a mental toll on these RSS' students. My son had 6 total buddies from our state that went for SAR and he was the 1 of 6 that passed. He had to say good buy to his very close "SAR brothers". Hang in there!
PS. My son text me today he received order's for San Diego! He's very happy!
MamaB, hello! What you're saying is not unexpected to hear. It happens frequently......when they look at the long road ahead, when they experience the hold times in beween schools, when they come home and get a "taste" of what they have sacrificed in their attempts to achieve this rate......well, a lot do DOR. This rate is extreme. The video that sarahbear posted explains very well what they experience while going through their schools. The commitment they have to maintain - for a lonnnnng time - is beyond comprehension, I believe, until they are actually experiencing it. And, if during this time, they question what their goal is, it is totally understandable and acceptable for them to DOR if this is what they decide is best for them.
What's best for some is not best for others. As with a lot of things in life, one doesn't always know what is best until they are in a situation. In these schools, it would be a time in their life for them to truly ask themselves if this is what they want because a lot is sacrificed in order for them to achieve it.
And, if they decide it isn't want they want, this is perfectly fine. It isn't a failure. It isn't due to an inability. It's a decision as to what direction they want to go. What's good for some is not the same for others. We all have things that we shine at in life.....not everyone shines for the same reason. It's a matter of finding it and if it means that sometimes our direction is changed, then this is just fine. They are young. They have their entire life in front of them and I believe we are to be supportive (not that you aren't) in their decisions.
oh no! my husband woke up in the middle of the night with a roaring earache, dizziness and all... one week before RSS grad! he's concerned about going to medical - doesn't want to get rolled or put on LLD for a few days. any recommendations? we both don't know if going to the ER on base will get him in "trouble" either, he thinks it may but isn't sure. anyone know anything about this or can give us any advice? any help is appreciated!
sara - I know that so many of the guys go through with everything from colds to fractured ankles and penumonia.. so perhaps since he is so close he can take some advil or tylenol and push on through it! I pray he can.. If he goes to med chances are they will roll him back and make him start all over again and who knows when or how long. That is what he is worried about Im sure.. Im praying for him and you hang in there honey!!! Earaches are so common for these guys in and out of the water and in the heat of the day with water inside their ears.
Mom - I agree with Texas and Andys - Sooo good that those boys made their decisions now they would not have passed RSS most likely as their hearts were just not there. But they will shine somewhere else as Texas said! God bless your boy and may he see the prize at the end of the Pipeline! That helo squadron and Eventually those gold wings!!
Sarahbear, I know that "they" (our swimmers still in school) have "someone" superior to them - such as a Petty Officer - that they can go to and ask. I'm sorry I can't give more specific than that cuz I don't know, but ask your hubby to think of "who" in their barracks is in a position to give advice. I remember my son talking about this in relation to someone in their barracks who was having some issues........ Now having said that, what is most important is his health.....
Lydia. I don't think they can even take Tylenol or Advil. They have to be 100% drug free. My son told me they would ask if anyone went to medical or if they have self medicated. Dizziness incorparated with an earache means the infection has gone to the inner ear most likely. That can be a sign of a perforated ear drum (TM). That can be serious. I wouldn't mess around with that.
Thanks ladies for your encouraging words, seems my boy is back on track. After receiving his flight suit and jacket, he seems more determined then ever.
Sarah so sorry your hubby is in that predicament, we'll pray for healing.
Mama - whooop whooop!!! The Tom Cruise thing. They just love that and then they get flight suit Fridays... something they look so forward too!!! Im so happy he is pumped!
Sarah - have you heard from him yet today? I figure class is probably about over by now.. been praying for him all day!!!!
