Jack, yes the Navy supplies them. some people buy the equipment (mask and fins) before heading down to Pcola to work out so their bodies already are used to swimming with that equipment. That is very common with the SEAL and the SWCC guys that are DEP, under contract.

  • Jodi-alumni Ship 4

Hi Shelly, my son left the same day and I just got my letter today. Same ship, same division. This is a great group of women. They know a lot and are very willing to answer any questions that you have.

  • Lydia (For B - The Sea is Ours)

Hi Shelly....   actually 2 years ago my son was ship 4 Div 818....  wooo... welcome honey... hw can we help you??  Have you joined your PIR group...

Yea Jodi and Shelly boys are together!  whoooop

kev...  I agree... my son bought equipment to practice with while he was on hold...  same fins mask etc....  he then handed them down to a kid behind him when he grad RSS  sooooo jack...  wont hurt for him to go ahead and get that which will be familiar to him...   they will thusly provide all the Sailors need but to get a jump on or head start.tell him go for it!

  • Vitamama

I think that advice to get practice equipment was great to get a head starts for our Sailor...and then my husband sure loved that good stuff when snorkeling in Mexico the next year....

  • sweetpea4

Had a fantastic trip to San Diego. The graduation ceremony was very nice and my Son was the Honor Graduate! So excited for him. Now off to the new squadron in a couple of weeks. More training for the next year or so! This graduation was special, because the squadron is standing down. Lots of changes going on!!!!

  • JackFlash

Congrats on your Honor Boy, Sweeatpea! Sorry we couldn't have had better weather for you.

Update---- while not in time to test yesterday, my son did get cleared for PST testing starting next Monday. Finally!!! Woot Woot! Don't know why, but this has been a hurdle for him. One step closer to the Pipeline!
  • kev323

Lydia, that was cool of your son.

  • Vitamama

Sweetpea4  You can be proud. Congrats!

  • Birdiejr

Sweetpea - Congrats to you and your sailor!! I know it was a great trip (regardless of the weather)!!

Jack - Good luck to your son on his PST!!

Jodi & Shelly - So cool to find each other already!! Stick together!! It really helps!! Don't know what I woulda done w/o my N4M's this last year.

Hope everyone is starting to cool off and get some rain!! Hugs!!

  • Jodi-alumni Ship 4

Birdiejr, yes its cool to find another mom. It seems to me that there are alot of moms of rescue swimmers on the Leaving in July and Bootcamp Moms sites. I know the drop out rate is high so I have my fingers crossed that J has what it takes to follow in the footsteps of the sons of the moms on this site. Your boys seem to really love what they do and that is what I hope for my son.

  • Birdiejr

Jodi - I know my boy is REALLY happy right now and has a GREAT group w him. That counts for a lot!! I'm sure your J will find his niche wherever it may be. Just know we will be here to support you throughout it all. It's a tedious process, nervewrecking at times but that's why this is such a great site. Everyone understands what you're going thru. I'm glad you've hooked up w your bc group. I'm still friends w several from my group, Godsends I tell you!! :-)

  • roxanne

Sweetpea, Congrats to you and your sailor!!! Sounds like it was very special, so happy you could be there.

JodiJ and Shelly, My son was Ship 4 Div 818 with Lydia's son 2 yrs ago. You are right he is very happy (and so are he buddies), RSS was not his original contract it was SWCC, but the good Lord had a different plan-  and it has worked out very well.  He is very happy, I think it is a much better fit for him.  Praying for your son's-they will so great things!!!

Jack, Hope the PST goes well!!

  • Camouflage

I am a new mom to AIRR.  My Navy-son is actually transferring into this program.  So how does that work?  He didn't join it from Boot Camp.  He is in San Diego now -- so I guess when he gets his orders he will join up with an incoming class from Boot Camp?

  • Lydia (For B - The Sea is Ours)

Camouglage.....  welcome here!  First I suggest you go up to the discussion forum section and ready path of the swimmer...  its tells a lot...  now Im assuming that he like several boys here rolled from Buds or SWCCK into RSS ....  again... there are several moms here that had that happen also and can help you through this...  My understanding is yes... he will transfer in to RSS Pcola and go on hold...  they all go on hold for a while no matter ....  It depends on if your Sailor was medical rolled or just decided that what ever.... was not for him (her)...  Hold times are not bad all be they frustrating ...  it can work to their benefit as they will have time to build back up...  observe the RSS pipeline, talk to other guys and gals etc....  but mentally can take a toll....  So I think we would all just encourage you to encourage him to keep on keeping on no matter what his circumstance was / is...  regain mental focus and use his time to his advantage.... Im glad you are here and we are here for you and each other.  My son is finally finished with the entire Pipeline and will get his wings next month or so...  and Ill tell you as so many here can tell you....  it is a roller coaster that we just never seem to get off as parents / hubs / wives....  so hang out and let us know what we can do for you!!!!  Other than lots of encouraging prayers!!!!

Jack - AWESOME...  each step is a milestone..  and there are soo many... but one at the time!!!  One day at the time!

Birdie is exactly right Jodi - glad you are here AND hooked up with your PIR group.. you will have life long friends now - who understand what you are and will go through!!!!!!

    Kev - thank you!!!

AIRR - hey there!!!  have missed you...  Bman just finished his Desert Quals and is doing great...  wings are soon and then   YIKES.... =(      deployment    That which I have dreaded for two years from the day he left for BC two years ago  I knew this time would one day come...  now we wait and see....

    Vita - hey!!!!!!!!!

    sweetpea....   SOOOOOO  awesome!  whoooop whoooop

Well, if you are new...  rememeber to go up and read Phases and also read the path...  it will help sooo much!!!

  • Lydia (For B - The Sea is Ours)

    Camo..  sorry misspell

  • Camouflage

Thank you for the welcome -- I did read "The Path of a Rescue Swimmer" -- thank you for having that posted!   My son is a transfer in from Special Ops -- and I guess the thing I'm having a hard time getting information on -- is will he have to stay on base in barracks with the new class being formed or will he have the option of living off base.  He is married and we're just trying to figure out if his wife can go there with him or not ----- until some point after he gets through a certain level of AIRR training........

  • Birdiejr

Welcome Camouflage!! My Sailor was a BUD/S candidate, medically dropped last Nov and drove to Pcola. He has 2 buddies who also came from BUD/s his same group, one of which is married. His wife stayed behind in SD (I think that is where he was from). Anyway, I'm not sure that helps but I do think they have to stay together to form a "unity" feel kinda thing. I could be wrong about that though. RSS is a tight group once they get going. Hooyah to your sailor and to you for taking steps to support him!! We'll be here to help in anyway we can.

Jack - Counting the days to hear good news from your son's PST.

Now, dear N4M's, I have a prayer request. My youngest daughter, my sailor's Irish twin, is having some tests tomorrow w an endocrinologist. We're hoping it turns out to be something simple if anything at all. We haven't told our sailor, of course, but would appreciate your good thoughts and prayers. Thanks bunches!!

  • Vitamama

Birdiejr    Praying for her right now and for peace for mama Birdie!  So privileged to partner in this with you too.

  • sweetpea4

    Birdiejr prayers being said!

Camouflage, my Son got married right before RSS started. They had to wait until he could get brown bagger status.  He eventually got to live off base! My Son also DOR in SWCC, funny how everthing works out. He was the Top Honor Student in FRAC. Doing very well, tell your Sailor to keep his spirits up things have a way of working out for the best. It is a very difficult time after a DOR but things get better prettty SOON!   Hold on for the ride we are here for you!!!!

  • kkrHoosier

I've been away awhile - technical difficulties after the big storm!  My son is still waiting for A School to start.  He did move to the other side of base.  That's my only news update.

Birdiejr - I will pray for your daughter.

Jack - all the best to your son as he begins this journey.

Sweetpea - congratulations to your son on his achievement!

Camouflage - welcome to this group - these moms helped me a lot - with support and knowledge.

Lydia - you are the "go to" mom as usual.

Jodi and Shelley - you will have lots to share - it's nice that you joined this group so close together.

  • Camouflage

I do apologize for being nothing more than a leach (a camo one though!) sucking information out of you and not contributing in any other way!  But I do appreciate all that you are sharing.  What a great group to have found!

I'm understanding that when he gets there he will have to stay in the "dorm" housing with his class so they can form a "team" and "bond" -- I totally get that.

But at what point in the training do they get to have the spouse there and live in housing themselves?  Like after what training or after passing what milestone?

I'm learning that after he gets his "Brown-Bagger" status?  When is that?  What does he have to pass to get that status?

    Thank you all!!!!!!!!!!

  • CaliMom (Maryann)

Welcome Camo-I'm sorry I can't offer more information than you already know.  I know when my son was in RSS, his buddy was married and lived off base, but don't know what he had to do to do that.

Jack-now the journey begins.  Glad your son is finally going to get his chance to show the Navy what he can do.

Sweetpea-welcome back.  Glad you had a good time with your sailor and that you had safe travels.

Birdiejr-praying for you and your daughter.

  • Vitamama

Hey all you newbies to the pipeline.  My son is in SD and has been in a squadron and now the helo is being decommissioned ( he said he has to wear his whites for the service)  and they will be put in another squadron to continue.  Do I understand all that?  No. So you are not alone.  I mean, why would they even train them in one helo if it was going to be decommissioned....I know  I know.   ha!!!  He is happy  and that's the good part. And he probably understands it.    His brother and family are out there for a conference and got to see him.  :)

  • JackFlash

    Best N4M Group evah!!!!

Thank you all for the encouragement for my son!  Y'all are so precious it makes me want to go shopping at the mall.... well not really that, but I appreciate it just the same.

  • kev323

vitamama it probably was a decommissioning of a whole squadron, they do that because of BRAC ( Base realignments) or to reorganize its helicopter communities which they do from time to time. Due to budget cuts or better use of man power.

  • Lydia (For B - The Sea is Ours)

Camo - you are welcome here and we expect you to ask questions... we all still do hahah!!!........   i think they have to be Phase Three to put in a chit for Brown Bag..  or at least Phase two....   SWEETPEA might be able to tell you more appropriately as far as the timing..  yea...  when they roll into a different Rate...  its almost like they start all over which I understand is very frustrating..  paperwork takes time!  Once your son gets to Pcola he will be able to ask the appropriate questions to the command to find out..  both of them will have to be patient  (I know I HATE that word)  uggggg........

Vita...  I agree with kev...  there are so many budget cuts our govnmt is implimenting that so many aspects of our Navy, rates, bases are changing...  no worries tho....  he will be re-assigned and Im sure it will be even a better situation..  also...  there are some NEW HSC squads forming..to better target the need of the community...  hang in there!!!!

Jack...  I want to go shoppiing at the mall with you...  cause that means I can fly to SD see my son AND shop...  ahhhh   heaven!!!!

KKr....  dont ya hate it when storms and technology happen...  glad you are back inthe saddle !!!!!  Im glad you are okay...  weid stuff happening these days with the weather....  uggggg

Bird.........    super power prayers sister!!!  xoxoxoxoxoxox  please dont hesitate to keep us updated... or vent or cry or laugh what ever you need WE ARE ALL here for you!!!   for each other!  ITS WHAT WE DO!!!  =)

  • Jodi-alumni Ship 4

Afternoon ladies. I have a question. I made reservations for PIR. I think I remember reading somewhere on here that your boys shipped out early Saturday morning the day after graduation. Is that normal? I reserved the room for Friday night only and now I'm thinking I maybe I should reserve Saturday also. Any suggestions?

  • sweetpea4

Jodi-Josh mine had the entire weekend off. At that time my son was headed to SD for SWCC.

Camo our motto here is remain flexible! Your DIL has married the Navy Too! Lots of patience and support will be needed. Not sure how many moves the Navy will pay for during training, when different schools are a short period of time. The first move for my DIL was not paid by the Navy

  • westcoastmom

Viamama some of my Sons Buddies were trained in the Bravo helo which is being phased out. They will be re trained in the Romeo soon. That could also be what is going on with him and his suadron.

  • Vitamama

Thank  you  kev, westcoastmom and Lydia.  I think that is it.  It's not bothering him. I just like to understand. He is probably in the squadron with your son's buddies.  Such a great group of men we have there in SD. We'll be out there in 34 days.... ( and I won't forget the cookies, Lydia)

  • Birdiejr

Vita - Isn't it great that they form such a bond that this craziness doesn't seem to bother them bc they have each other to go thru it w? Likewise, we have each other to go thru it w. LOL

Jack - I'm w Lydia. I'm flying out to go shopping (even tho mine isn't in SD right now LOL)

Jodi - Mine had the weekend off but he was staying in GL. I don't know when they learn if they are Grad-n-Go but I think I'd book the hotel. It's better to have and not need than need and not have. You'll know in time to cancel.

Camo - Sweetpea is so right!! Flexibility is key!! That will last you thruout YOUR time w the Navy.

Now about my daughter, further testing was ordered today but they think it may be Cushing's. This is not a good diagnosis but at least it is an answer and has a good prognosis. Pls continue good thoughts and prayers while we continue to test and then figure what to do if it is bc she graduates college in Dec. Never a dull moment...

Thanks for all the support, friends. I'm not telling anyone here until we get word. The family has suffered tremendous loss in the last year and I don't want to worry anyone unnecessarily. That's another reason why it's soooo wonderful to have you all to talk to!! I do so appreciate it!!

Kkr & Lexi - Do you have status updates? I'm sorry if I missed them.

Lydia - As always, you and your husband remain in my prayers, as does your sailor...

    Hugs to everyone!!

  • Jodi-alumni Ship 4

Birdiejr, so sorry to hear about your daughter. Good wishes and prayers are being sent your way. You have been a support to everyone here so hopefully our prayers will help support you in this trying time.

  • Lydia (For B - The Sea is Ours)

JodiJosh...  so far for the past two years..  I have observed that when the guys are Rescue Swimmer contract...  then they Grad and Go...  chances are if he PIRs on Thursday he will have all that day with yall and will leave at 1 am or so to the airport..  my son PIRd on a Friday (it was a holiday thing for some reason) and he and all the Rescue Swimmers left at 1 the nexxt morning...  I met him at the airport and spent the entire day with him and the guys until the flew out at about 2 that afternoon...  sure that can change but for two years this is the pattern that Ihave seen...  If their orders are to Pcola they almost always Gran and Go...

Bird...  still praying for her and your family..!!!!!!!

  • Dan

After my SR's PIR the twenty rescue swimmers that were in his 800 division, they flew out at different times.

Some went out Sat Morning, Some Sat night, and the Rest went Sunday morning.  My son was one that went at 10:30 Sunday morning.  We had stayed and were able to have breakfast with him and wait for the plane to board.

My SR thought that it was just luck of the draw when they actually flew out.

  • johun alumni 7/27/12Ship4Div817

Lydia, good to know, but how do you get to spend time with them at the airport without a ticket to go back to the waiting area?

I want to go to the airport also and spend time with my son-and give him his cell phone & ipod (Graduates 7/27) but my husbands thinks we will get stopped.  Help......

  • Jodi-alumni Ship 4

Lydia, He graduates 8/31 which is a Friday (also Labor Day weekend). How soon do they know when they ship out. I called the hotel and they said we could tell them when we check in if we need the room for an additional night but I didn't know if J. will know by check in time. We are driving in so we will go directly to RTC before going to the hotel.

  • teamnavy

johun--O'Hare and Midway are very familiar with the sailors graduating and give you special passes to get through security to wait with your sailor at their gate, just make sure you bring in your ID and when your sailor checks in for his flight go up with him and ask for the pass.

and ladiessss (and gents) GUESS WHAT!!! I'M FINALLY MEDICALLY CLEARED (only took 3 months ha)! I have my first PST on Wednesday...I'm incredibly nervous and don't feel ready since I've been visiting my sailor the past week in Cali (had the hardest goodbye so far), in addition to numerous other things that have happened this past week, buttt my scout thinks I'm ready and actually is holding the PST just for me so I guess it's good he's very eager for me to get going.  Wish me luck! I'm going to be a wreck that day

  • JackFlash

Team navy--- you have a Sailor AND you are going to test to become a Rescue Swimmer yourself??? Well, how cool is that?!? My son is going to PST for the first time on Monday and he's pretty excited too. It seems to be a big step just to get that PST clearance. Good luck to you on Wednsday, and keep us informed on your progress.
  • sweetpea4

Team Navy good luck on Weds!  JackFlash good luck to yours as well!

  • Birdiejr

YAY, TeamNavy!! Good luck to you and also to your sailor, Jack!! This should be a good week on here. :-)

Just talked to our sailor and he's 2 weeks into A-School, enjoying it, learning a lot. I still miss him like he just walked out the door. Sigh...

Johun - Counting down w you!!

Hi Dan!! Haven't spoken to you before!! Hope you are well!!

Hope everyone had an awesome weekend!! Hugs!!

  • Dan

Yes, Birdiejr, I am still finding my way around.

My son went to the beach this weekend.  Had a good time, it's nice to see them, on facebook, get a break and see what's outside the walls of the base a little.

  • CaliMom (Maryann)

teamnavy-good luck on your PT test & jackflash-good luck to your sailor as he does his PST.

Sounds like I was lucky with my sailor after boot camp.  We had an entire awesome weekend with him and he did not have to ship out until I think like Wednesday after we left.

Birdiejr-I'll be praying for you and your daughter.

  • Ry'smom Ship04Div818

Okay, I am feeling a little confused....  sorry, my son is Ship4 Div 818 and PIR is 8/31/2012.  I am making the travel plans and want to stay long enough in case he does get to hang around until Sunday, but on the other hand if we say good-bye Sat morning I guess I will just have to be a tourist for a couple days if I plan my flight for Monday..  I am flying from the great NW (and won't know what to do with the heat and humidity :)     Sounds like it just all happens as it will? My other question is what is the training track for the AIRR swimmers How long are they in Pcola? I think I read something somewhere about SD ? when is that and for what...

  • Birdiejr

Thx, Cali. We go back on the 26th for discussing test results.

Jack - Waiting to hear good news today! Wishing you good luck, TeamNavy!

  • Lydia (For B - The Sea is Ours)

    Brenda - Jodi - johun -

we just did not know when they would fly out and the Sailors wont know until the week of PIR...  they will have a form they will fill out (remind them)I had to ASK my son for it...  cause he was excited and forgot...... it will have their Airport and flight number and departure time on it...for you.  They will give it to you at PIR..  we had no idea that the Pcola guys (at that time) would be Grad and Go..  we were warned to expect it but plan on extra days just in case.  We stayed in GL through Saturday and flew out on Sunday...  We toured down town Chicago and had a blast with some of the other parents.......So my son flew out the next day after PIR....   We met him at the airport before they came through the doors...  we were able to walk up to the counter as they checked in and got a pass from them to go back through security...   some parents came late..  they contacted the USO coordinator at the airport and they were able to let their Sailor come back up to the ticket counter and get a pass..  so be sure you have the USO contact infor for each of the airports (the ppl at the ticket counters are really nice and helpful to Sailors parents)    My son flew from Midway and all the RSS 818 s as well..  all on that Saturday morning at 1am....  they rolled up in three huge Greyhound buses..  after we got through security..  we handed him his CHARGED UP and with BATTERY INSIDE the phone.......  He was happy!!!!  We hung out at the USO most of the time..  and then he flew out that afternoon.  SOOOO  I think you should plan on that extra day just in case..  as you just never know...   BE SURE YALL CHECCK THEIR CELL PHONES....  THEY TAKE THE BATTERIES OUT OF THEM AND THEN SHIP THEM IN THE KID IN THE BOX......  GUESS WHO FOUND OUT THE HARD WAY .....  When I discovered the day we arrived (the day of the Meet and Greet) that his battery was no where to be found....  My daughter and I had to run around like two crazy women in our rental car to go and buy him a new phone....  so that became his PIR gift...  a nnew Droid..  hahahahah  so be sure about the batter and CHARGE their phone the day you get there and dont for get their charges either!!!!!!!!

Hope this helps all of yall who are in this situation!!!!!!!

  • Lydia (For B - The Sea is Ours)

***  small correction...  they all left the base and got tooo the airport at 1am..  they all had flights that left at different times..  Some got to Pcola earlier than others.

  • Vitamama

Lydia, you need to write a book and have it given as a gift to each recruit's mom.    When reading BC stories ( previous) I  keep thinking " I don't remember that"  but then K got to stay for some medical stuff and then re-cooperate at home  for 3 weeks ( yeah)   and then flew to PCLA from there, stronger than ever.

  • Jodi-alumni Ship 4

Thanks, Lydia. I had to call and reserve Thursday (already booked Friday thinking we would drive straight from home to RTC then go to the hotel. My hubby always wants to leave in the evening, drive all night then get where ever the next morning). He informed me Saturday that we would leave right after work on Thursday which would put us in Great Lakes around 10:00-hence the need for a room. We put J's phone on hold as you and others suggested earlier and we will give it to him-charged- to use until he gets the phone he really wants (and is willing to pay for haha.)

  • Lydia (For B - The Sea is Ours)

Vita...  I have several book Im thinking about writing... one is being the care give for Cancer victims, one is how to survive...  BC ...  and Im writing a childrens book  called theh Amazing Adventures of Rubys Red Ribbon....  hahah  - i love writing...

OKAY so be sure you go to your Meet and Greet...  on the night before PIR at the Ramada Inn....  Ill tell ya... we had more fun and made more friends!!  Ramada sponsors the food and you pay for the drinks...  it was a blast....  rememeber the EARLY BIRDIE GETS THE best seats at PIR so leave early to get to the base ....  you will go through the gate with your pass... park and then stand in line to go through security (can you believe they pulled me aside to examine and etc... I was already an emotional basket case)  then you will go up to the sign in table where they will look to make sure you are on your Sailors list of guests...  then you will hike about 3/4 mile to the actual auditorium...  now listen my friends...  have you hoooo yaaaa voice on cause each Ship competes witht he yelling when their kids march in....  duh...  the 800s always seem to win...  take your tissue cause you will bawal your eyes out and your camera..  strap it to your wrist... I dropped mine and I came unglued...  cried till one of my navy mom friends hubby went for help... meanwhile a brother of a Sailor crawled under the bleecher with Grad dads cane and got it for me hahahah...  the pictures sucked after all that.....  you need a good camera... the 800s are down at the far end of the building with little light...  and you are too far away to get the flash to work....  sooo rememeber to scream at the top of your lungs when the 800s march in...  inbetween sobes and snot and hankies that is!!!  ohh and watch for the body snatchers....  some kids lock up and the snatchers have to find them before they faint... it happens...  it does... no shame in that... it is a long amazing ceremoney... after its over... prepare to dive over the bleachers and make a run for your Sailor... hahahah...  my daughter and I told my boy we would have on irredescent yellow shirts so he could see us.... it worked!!!!  Beside the fact that after the Sailors marched in and got in formation and all got quiet.....   momma screamed at the top of her lungs..... in the dead silence...  wooooooo hoooooo gooooo    "last name"   he smiled for one half a second.. then regained bearings...  my B was a stick so he was at the front...  gosh.. I miss those days...  no wonder my and sis stayed up all night to drive to the airport 2 hours away... to meet him....  looking back... it was one of the best days of my life......     =)

  • Lydia (For B - The Sea is Ours)

***  Vita and Jodi that is....
