    Travelsalot & BJ Ship 04 Div 822,

I'm not sure why they do that, but that is the way it is. You are correct, they take appr. 30 into the class and they know that around 10-12 of them will be cut the first day. It just is so disappointing for them when they have been on hold for a long time, are trying so hard and just want it so bad. It hasn't been easier that all of his buddies, roomates and many of his shipmates had already started class previously. So now he was not only one of the last to get classed up, but now is cut and back on hold. I told him to keep his chin up and just keep working at it. He had trouble in one area, so I said just focus on improving that.

  • Travelsalot

Well, this is some good info and some good advice... I think in the long run its better to be cut and sent back to strengthen certain areas than to be completely cut from the program... Makes sense.....In the meantime, they have a job, pay check, roof, food etc......................
    Thank you....
  • Shawn Ship 04 Div 822

dbristol:  My son also started RSS this week and was cut.  He had told us quite a while back that he really wanted to be in Class C because it supposedly had the hardest teachers.  Then a week ago he said he wasn't sure because he also heard that while it was the hardest class physically, some people felt they didn't learn as much.  Last Thursday he said that he hadn't made it into Class C but if he did good at PT on Friday they still had a few spots left.  He made it in but was then cut on the first day.  He said that his scores were higher than some that weren't cut so he wasn't sure what the criteria was.  He thinks he will start RSS in Class A on April 1.  X...fingers crossed.

  • Vitamama

responding to the last couple posts about the holding back and waiting....So true, and believe me, the 2 years pass quickly.  Just be that encourager and prayer warrior for them, there are a lot more 'waits' ahead of you...and  save your pennies moms,  for last minute tickets and be proud of the opportunities and the incredible men/women they are becoming.

  • dbristol

Shawn Ship 04 Div 822. - Well maybe our sons will be in class together on this next one. He thinks they get to start in the next class if they are cut on the first day. Fingers Crossed (: Yes - the buzz is that Class C has some of the hardest teachers. Haha. My son had known for 1 1/2 weeks he was starting. He has really good PST scores also. I am sure they have certain reasons why they do the cuts. My son on one of the exercises had trouble getting his mask completely evacuated. He thinks that probably was part of the reason he was cut.

  • Mama B

AWESOME time today with our son at FRAC graduation! The instructors spent so much time with us -joking and laughing. It was really neat seeing all the guys in my son's new squadron, attend graduation and welcome all 3 of the boys into their squadron, as they are staying here in SD. The Commander in charge of this NEW Squadron invited us to come back in May when HSM-35 would be commissioned. Each of the original Airman at the Commisson will get a plaque with their name on it that will remain on the wall in their building. Just as they did years ago when a new ship was commissioned each original sailor would write his name on a plank of wood in the ship.
  • Jodi-alumni Ship 4

MamaB, is your son a Romeo or a Sierra?

  • Lydia (For B - The Sea is Ours)

    Hi yall!!!

Okay...  I hate to remind yall of this but ....  the attrition rate for Rescue Swimmers and all spec ops and forces is about 80 percent... a class of 30 will wind up at about 9...  Its hard to hear and understand this I know....  BUT if the fail and roll back, they are almost always given a second chance...  the first 3 weeks of RSS most of the kids roll or DOR...  after week 4 it gets better...  all us mammas can do is just keep up the hoooahh and remind them that its just more time to beef up...  but physically and mentally...  on pinkie finger one wrong breath one wrong entry into the pool and they will cut them...  its just so hard and soooo frustrating I know... I wish I could say something more... but just remind them to keep their mental edge..  scream the loudest at cadence at PT..  run the most, listen and study..  its all by the book..  I we old mammas have always said that RSS is the hardest and toughest on them and us parents..  that is why when they are on hold it is a good thing ...  time to beef up those scores, run times, flutter kicks...  mask clearing at certain depts..  etc.... buddy tow, diving, etc...  Im soooo sorry that this is so hard..  I gained more weight and lost my mind during RSS...  he came through stellar.. I came through 20 pounds heavier and sleepless!  hang in there, they need your encouragement and strength..  they seem so tough but really at the end of the day, they want to hear mom and dad say... hey we are behind you no matter what!!!!!!

MamaB......   sweeeeeeeeeeet  a great day sis

Hugs and hope and prayers for each one of yalls Sailors!!!!  and YES a paycheck is a good thing these days !!!  =)

  • Mama B

    My son is Romeo
  • Travelsalot

Hi Lydia... thank you for the insight... It does help.. feed me more...
  • Montana Mom

My son has an Air Rescue Swimmer contract and leaves for boot camp today!  We are new to all of this and I would love to hear any advice or info about what he will be going through in the next couple of months.

  • sweetpea4

Dalton's mom go back and read the comments. Be patient it is a long hard road!!! Remain flexiable, things are always changing. The hold times can be difficult, but the time has to be used wisely. This is not only physically demanding but also very mentally!!! We Mom's pray alot!  Good luck with are in this all together!!!

  • Montana Mom

Thanks so much!  It's an exciting journey for him and us but so hard to not know anything that is going on.

  • sweetpea4

Dalton's mom, I know you won't get much info on him for several weeks once he arrives at BC. One very short phone call that he has arrived. Hang in there! Lydia post the path of a rescue swimmer that is very informative read it!

  • ochaos

It can be hard when they want something so bad and then do not make it for one reason or another. This ride as well as all spec ops is a roller coaster with many ups and downs.  Sometimes they get discouraged when they see those around them getting cut or DOR'ing and it gets to them mentally.  Encourage them and let them know you are supporting them no matter what happens.

  • ochaos

    MamaB congrats on the graduation!!

  • Montana Mom

Does anyone know of the differences in the special ops boot camp vs the regular boot camp?  I have heard there is more PT but is anything else different?  I got the phone call at 1:02 this morning and it lasted 17 seconds....that was a hard one to swallow because he sounded like a robot calling me.  I wrote him a letter tonight and am planning on mailing it when I find out his address.  It is probably more for my own good than his but I am going to keep writing.  Sorry I am rambling....thanks for the support!

  • Travelsalot

    Daltons Mom..
Yes there is a difference..Boot Camp for Spec Ops Sailors is more physically challenging and intense...The instructors try to prepare the Sailors for the next phase of their career..Its nothing your Sailor cannot handle....
  • chopsmom

Dalton's mom: He sounded like a robot because he's on a schedule and probably was only allowed 17 seconds!!  Keep writing!  It WILL help you, but it will also make him feel better.  Talk about "newsy" things.  You're a great mom!  Hang in there!

  • dbristol

That first call is difficult because you want to ask questions, but they really are only allowed a couple seconds. My son sounded the same way when he went to boot camp. We got " I made it. I'm safe. I love you. Bye."  Hopefully the next phone call will be in around 3 weeks. I thought that was the worse one because by that time, they are exhausted, (my son was sick also) and homesick and wondering what they heck they got themselves into. It didn't help that we were not home when he called and he couldn't get ahold of any of us on our cells. By the 3rd message he left, you could tell he was breaking down and said he just wanted to hear someones voice. Yeah there were alot of tears listening to those messages :(  He got to call a week later thank goodness. Whatever you do, keep the phones handy. You will be praying to hear that sweet voice. Hang in there. We are all here for you.

  • Tiffany

Daltons Mom - I recommend having your home telephone set up with call forwarding. So when you leave home you can forward to your cell.
The first 3 weeks are the hardest for you. Hang in there. When you finally start getting mail it gets a little easier. Lean on fellow moms most of your family and friends do not understand what you are going through. Pray (ALOT) and encourage your Recruit in every letter. Encourage him to pray. My sons relationship with God blossomed while he was in bootcamp. ((((Hugs to you))))
  • Lydia (For B - The Sea is Ours)

Hey yall!!!!!   Gosh I sooo apologize for being MIA...  got some medical stuff dealing with...  WELCOME to the new mammas....  I see that other "Old Planks"  here are helping yall!!!!  they are awesome and have been here done this!!!!!!!    yep what they said!!!  =)    If you are new  (BC mammas) do go up and read the Path...  otherwise...  just know that the kids will do great..  just the communication is soo sparse that it is hard... we are use to having them home.. now suddenly they are gone..  growing up.  I mailed my B two letters a day  hahah... after BC he told me he did not have time to read them but man was he popular cause he got more mail than anyone hahahah....

well, just remember that Spec Operations is awesome but also with that comes a high calling..  everything they do has to be better, more, higher....  so yes, in BC they will be pushed harder...  same once they go to Pcola for NACCS and RSS...  faith is good mental also...  prayer always!!  I can tell you as can Sweetpea and so many others whose boys have finished this pipeline...  it is NOT a walk in the park ... for them or for moms and dads...  BUT it is doable and my son is loving it and doing great - got his wings back in November ..  after what 2.5 years in the pipeline...  so will yalls!!   yes we are for sure here...  ask questions, vent, laugh, brag...  we are here together in this...

Speaking of BC....  I missed my sons first "Im here mom" call and his first BC call... uggggg......   I got the second one... I was in the bathroom at work but by golly I got that dang call!!!!  =)   Then you must hang in there when they go on hold for NACCS and RSS...   but hang in there...  so happy yall are here!!!  please hang in with us and we will encourage and help all we can...   <3

  • ochaos

    welcome to the new moms!

  • Montana Mom

Thank you Heartstrings for the encouragement!  I know without a doubt that His relationship with the Lord will grow!  It always does when we are stripped of everything else.  I can't wait to get his box and find out where to send my letters. I will have a whole stack of them when I finally figure out where to send them.  I keep my phone beside me all the time, day and night, just incase he calls.  I would be too sad if he called and I missed it.  Thanks again for your kind words.

  • Lydia (For B - The Sea is Ours)

Hope everyone had a GREAT Easter... I know for those of you whose Sailors are in BC or in Pcola on hold... its not sooo great... holidays are sooo hard with our kids away!!

Have not seen my boy since Christmas and as he will deploy in August for 8 months wont see him till..... hummmm  perhaps Christmas 2014 ---  ugggg  so hard!!!  BUT he calls me on sunday after church and sometimes mid week if he gets a chance...  Hang in there yall!!!!

jmh8642 - last I heard your Sailor was on hold RSS... any new news??

travelsalot, aster. keke, airmom, GMom, Azokmom, chopsmom...  Shawnship, BJ??????

  • Vitamama

Checking in, Ms Lydia!!    Booked the ticket for my hubby to fly out to West Coast and then drive to Norfolk with K, stopping along the way to see family and of course a week here at home.  Not sure how it all works or when they fly the squadron out to their helo at sea but this is what he was trained for and so blessed to have such awesome sons!

  • Shawn Ship 04 Div 822

Well my son had is second first day of RSS yesterday, and is now on his first second day!  They cut 13 yesterday, which was what was expected as they put 3 in at the last minute and they normally cut 10 that first day anyway it seems.  I'm gonna be spending time praying my son doesn't forget even the tiniest thing over these next weeks.

One of his friends invited him to come home with him to Tampa this weekend.  Any of you moms out there from Tampa have a boy in Pensacola right now?

  • Jodi-alumni Ship 4

Good Afternoon, Lydia. J is doing okay. He is supposed to graduate May 24, then off to SERE.

Shawn, I think they cut 20 out of J's class the first day, then several more each day the first week. If I remember right, his class started with 38  and finished with 14, three of which rolled in from another class. If your son stays focused and works hard he should do fine.

  • GMom

My son is on hold in San Diego waiting to class up for FRAC. He completed SERE a few weeks ago ("longest week of his life!"). He wants to buy a car and we get that, but are concerned for him making a big purchase like that without us there. He thinks he will be out there for quite a while. Hold times are long now and FRAC is six months. Anyone know "generally" where and what comes after that?
  • Mama B

Gmom - usually a week before Graduation from FRAC they get their "orders" (where they will be stationed) There is a big NATOPS test they must pass first. My son was able to list 3 places on his "wish list" as to were he'd like to be stationed. Luckily he got his 1st choice.
During my sons graduation from FRAC they mentioned they had our son for 264 days. I believe that was his whole time there in SD.
    Hope this helps!
  • Travelsalot

Hi there... Sorry,, Ive been busy and like so many others, I read the posts and intend on commenting later when I have time..Wellllll, so much for that idea.
I had a great Easter... Met my kid in Pensacola on Sunday morning and Im still here!!!! Im having a great time..The Navy Gateway Inn and Suites is very nice and accommodating.. The price is bar none the best value and extremely comfortable, easy access etc.. My kid is still on hold and has been since Feb..He is eager to get started so I hope that will happen soon.. I was fortunate to meet some of his AIRR buddies, I wish I knew who their moms are, I would tell you that they are doing fine.
Today the Blue Angels trained and in doing so, they put on a spectacular air show. The Navy Museum is one of the best I have seen.. Worth the trip. Now, the white sand beach on Pensacola is beautiful..Ive never had sand squeak like this does when I walk across it.. craziness....
  • Vitamama

Travelsalot. I could picture it all having been there too!  That's where I met MamaB and some other moms and dads in our big N4M family. Great place to be!!

  • Travelsalot

I have the best picture of the beach.. I have to figure out how to upload it. I burned today at the Blue Angel show... The sun here is intense to say the least.. My son my husband and I to dinner for my birthday. We ate at an Irish restaurant and it was amazing.... Have you been to MCguires? They have over one million one dollar bills stapled to the ceiling and walls.

Im really comfortable here.. I wouldnt mind staying...
  • Lydia (For B - The Sea is Ours)

Vitamamma - Well, he is well on his way then... so glad yall will have some family time first!!!  Most likely when he gets squared away at his new digs, his squadron will be attached to a ship...  then out to sea..   my B deploys late August and he is pretty sure he knows which ship his squadron will be attached too but nothing written in stone what with dry docking soooo many of our ships now  uggggg  (I won't get started on that)  Keep us posted!!!!

Shawnship = ahhh  okay well, Im so glad that he rolled back into the pipeline..  yea like Jodi said......  such a HIGH attrition rate....  my son started with 39 in his class and he graduated with only 9 at the end...  praying for your boy also!!  and you mom... what about the other moms whose kids were in RSS??  anyone know if they made it or not???

Jodi - Awesome!!!!  Congrats to him...  the hard part of the pipeline is about over, not that the rest is a walk in the park but after A school...  failure is unheard of.. so he is well on his way!!!  SERE my son said was a great 2 week life awakening for him.  It was tough but they came out with new attitude and new vision..  so hang in there with that!!!

GMOM -  hey sis....  my sons BFF who deployed to Japan has a very nice truck (small size) and my son is selling it for him..  i can get the info for you if you would like.  He wanted to ship her to Japan hahaha... which of course was out of the question.. I have seen pix of it and it is very nice.. let me know...  just friend message me... yes after FRS graduation like MamaB said, they will attach to their squadron..they will get there home base assignment and squadron...  my son got number one choice also... he said that basically they take the top 3 Sailors and they try to give them their number one choice but if only one home base in a location pops then number one gets that then they go to number and so forth..  number one in the class wanted Guam and got it.. Bman was number 2 and wanted SD and he got it...  still alot depends on the needs of the bases and navy at the time ....

Travels.... awesome you got to hang out with your boy and his buddies!!!!  Hold times are tough as we have all talked about but a great way to beef up those PT scores and practice their running on the beach and swimming etc....  I think that is a restaurant that my son said he loved while in Pcola!!!  sooo kewl!

So glad to see everyone doing well!!!!!!  xoxoxox

  • Lydia (For B - The Sea is Ours)

PS - for our new BC moms...  such exciting times ahead...  glad yall are here with us!!!  It is a LONG pipeline but we are sure here for you!!!  Keep the faith the prayers and keep that dang phone on you at all times hahaha

  • Travelsalot

Question Lydia...There are so many rates waiting to attend Air Crew School.. My understanding is that Air Crew School is the first step for everyone who is headed for rates with in the Navy Air Unit? Not just Air Rescue /Rescue Swimmer etc..
    After Air Crew School the AIRR folks wait for the next step... Now;
Is there a Difference in Air Rescue and Rescue Swimmer ?
Do they all head down the same training path?
At what point did you say most off the Roll Backs or DROPS occur and why do you think that is? 39/9, what that from beginning to graduation?
I should know all of this by now and I have read everything possible.. Still confused..Whats FRC? I was happy to read that the top three get their choice of assignment and that the higher they are on the list, the better their chances to get what they want...Ill pass that on to my son..
Anyone know if they get their choice or Romeo or Sierra based on performance?
    Thanks alllllllllllllllllllll
  • Travelsalot

BJ,, I am in Pensacola now.. Yes there is a difference... The Navy Lodge is near the water and I believe it has a bay view... They didn't have any vacancies when I made my reservations..
We are at the Navy Gateway Inn and Suites.. Also very nice.. In land as opposed to the ocean view.. but the ocean view is soooo close.
We upgraded to a two room suite once we arrived.. one bedroom, full kitchen, living room, couch makes into a bed, dining table, two tv's, washer and dryer.. very nice ..and very large... ($71.00 per night)... The base is easy to get on (in comparison to Coronado Island).. The Blue Angels practice on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Their practice is a full on show worth watching. We drove to the Air Museum (also a must see if you like airplanes, space shuttles and war info/memorabilia) and discovered accidentally that the Blue Angels were flying. We parked at the museum and walked north toward the bleachers for the show. Afterwards we went to the museum. The light house is also a must see.. So much to do here.. We drove to Pensacola Beach (1.00 per car load to get on the island) and it has the most beautiful white sand beaches.. Very clean... There is also a beach on the base that is equally as nice with white sand...We walked along the walk/run/jog path on the base next to the water.. soooooo relaxing...
Enjoy your stay here.. Its raining today but ,,,we had two days of sunshine.
  • Jodi-alumni Ship 4

Travelsalot, if I remember right, my son told me that when it came time to choose to go either Romeo or Sierra the guys in his group got together and tried to decide who would do better with the schooling and that was how they made their choices. My son is a Romeo (more schooling which he isn't too keen on lol). In fact I think he may second guess that every time they take a test haha.

  • Travelsalot

Thanks Jodi-... My son seems to think they dont have a choice at all.. He also wants Sierra... Just think of the extra training the Romeos are getting.. Also heard more chances to fight pirates as a Romeo...
  • Mama B

Travelsalot - my son and everyone in his class were ASSIGNED whether they got Seirra or Romeo. He was bummed to get Romeo, being a so-so student. He actually told me during A-school that if he passed it would take a miracle. Well let me tell you God is still performing miracles!! Now that he is through it, he says he wished he had tried harder in high school, ugh! He knows the additional training is invaluable!
  • Mama B

Oh i forgot to mention during A-school he went back each evening and studied for 2 hrs as they aren't able to take any paperwork in or out of the building because the information is confidential.
  • Jodi-alumni Ship 4

Oh Mama B I am SO glad to hear that your son struggled too! J's first tests didn't go so well. I had thought this part was supposed to be easier than RSS but it doesn't seem that way (and J was a good student in high school). If the tests involved math he was in the 90's but the other stuff,  not so good.  We'd tell him to really study and he said the same about not being able to take out the paperwork to study. His last 2 tests have been very good so I'm starting to feel a little better but I still can't wait until its over lol.

  • Lydia (For B - The Sea is Ours)

Travels - yes Aircrew rates (for which there are many) from mechanics to Swimmers.... must pass NACCS first before continuing on their rate path...  including Rescue Swimmers...  once they pass NACCS the RSS boys and girls will go through RSS rescue Swimmer School...  I asked my son and he said NO like MamaB said that they do not have a part of the decision as to who get Romeo or Sierra... perhaps in Jodi's boys case they got to talk about their wishes and maybe even let the COs know but they are ASSIGNED not asked...  my son graduated RSS with the Honormen Award and they did not ask him what he wanted....  tho he got Sierra which was what he was praying for....now permanent duty station / base yes as mentioned before..  the slot that they graduate as far as Academics can definitely make a difference in whether or not they get one of their requests..  1st 2nd or 3rd place in class........  The attrition rate during Rescue Swimmer School (of which there are approx 5.5 weeks) is high because these guys are in Spec Operations and one wrong move can cost the life of themselves or another..  same as Spec Warfare who also has a high attrition rate (SEAL SWCCK DIVER EOD etc).....  a lot of the kids will DOR after NACCS as they don't want to hold till RSS or they decided that water is not for them....  alot of them DOR the first 3 weeks of RSS because they are sick of the Beat Down they are constantly getting and they just can deal with that mental stress...and there is no shame in any of it...  I believe that each child has a place in life and I always pray each one goes where they are suppose to be...  . some are Rolled because they fail a pool or PT test which they have one or two weekly...  my son said that after week 3 they are pretty much a Team and the DORs and fails usually stop at that point..  does not mean it cant happen of course...

horrrah for BJs boy in week 3!!!!

Jodi...  RSS is more physical and mental and A school is more academic..  both super hard in their perspective ways!!!  Ill bet your son will do great..  There were some classes in A school that B did GREAT at and some he passed by the skin of his teeth!  =)   sounds like your boy wants to do well and I just know he will!!!!!!   Hang in there mamma!!!!!

  • Lydia (For B - The Sea is Ours)

MamaB - got your message will email you soon

  • Vitamama

Every time I read  these stories I am even more proud of my son!!

  • Lydia (For B - The Sea is Ours)

Hi everyone...  just poppin in to check on everyone...  =D   xoxoxoxox

  • Shawn Ship 04 Div 822

My boy finished his first week of RSS but was sick by the end of it.  When he reported for his second week on Monday they rolled him out to the next course due to his illness.  So he will be starting his 3rd RSS class in two weeks.

His roommate posted a picture of their room saying they didn't get along with each other so they put tape down the middle of the room:  you stay on your side, I'll stay on mine.  I was slightly worried, but since then I've seen pictures of them together at various beaches and they spent the weekend at his roommate's parents in Tampa--so this mother can stand down now and relax.  :)

    BJ--How is your son doing?

How is RSS going for everyone else?

  • Mama~D Ship 4 Div 822

Hello, don't post on here much but love to keep up with all the amazing accomplishments of our guys and gals and great information to help us survive this 'pipeline' with our kids.  My son graduated bootcamp last October, has gone through AIRR school and just graduated from RSS on the 29th of March, we couldn't be there, we live in California but his cousin and family live in Alabama and did make the graduation, so that was amazing and we got great pictures from the day.  Now I finally get to go see my boy and I am traveling with my 80+year old parents and can't find room at either Navy Lodge or Navy Gateway.  Yikes, any suggestions would be amazing and help so much.  We will be getting into Pensacola May 9 and departing May 16th.  Thank you for any ideas you may have and can pass along.  New to this life.

  • GMom

When my son was in Pensacola (he's in San Diego now) we went to Pensacola three times.  We stayed at a Holiday Inn Express on Warrington Rd.  It was very nice, clean had a nice breakfast each morning, pool, jaccuzzi and was only about 3 miles out of the base gate. (Straight shot) and it's near the Walmart and other shopping. It was a bit more than the Navy Lodge but worth it.  We stayed at the Navy Lodge over Thanksgiving and it was very nice, but you have to go through the gate everytime which gets a little redundant. I wish my son was still in Pensacola, (as we live in Tampa) - we can drive and see him anymore :(

  • MIMom

Just wanted to pop in and say hi to everyone and welcome the new members.  I read all the posts that pop up but can never respond unless I physically log in to the website.  I couldn't have made it through all of this without your stories and updates...made me feel less alone!  Jess is in Norfolk, VA getting ready for the next class.  He is doing well.  Seems happy.  I am driving there this weekend to visit for the day - I miss him and just wanna give him a hug...haha.  Hope everyone is doing well...
