BTW- We live fairly close to GL. If anyone has a sailor based there and needs any type of support, please feel free to message me! We are all in it together!
Hello proudmama and welcome ! My son is also in BC (with nancynature's son) on an AIRR contract-Has his recruiter set him up with an instructor for training? If not he might want to ask if there is a class available
Hello, Michelek:) When does your son graduate from bc? It must be wonderful to have another mom whose son is going through the same things together. Did the boys know each other before bc? You mentioned that your son's recruiter had him train with an instructor. How often did he meet for the training? My son trains every week with his DEP group, but also meets his special ops trainer trains with that group monthly for a few hours. Does that sound similar to what your son did? Thanks for your insight!:)
Hello everyone--my son just arrived in Pensacola from San Diego to start RSS. He and a few others were reclassified from BUD/S and are now starting their new journey. He's excited to get started with a class and very anxious to get to a place where he can have regular liberty again. Thanks for all of the info--it really helps. All the best to your sons and daughters. MK5Diver
So proud of my son. Tomorrow is his final test for RSS and then he graduates the 2nd. I am praying that some family will adopt him as I will not be able to be there. This is breaking my heart:(
Dbristol, We live in the chicagoland area, otherwise we would be more than happy to attend his graduation. However, all is not lost! We are asking our family that lives in Florida if one of them can attend the graduation (retired airforce...) In case that doesn't work out, I have a good friend whose son (who served in Iraq twice) was "adopted" by a family in Florida -in the "adopt a soldier" community program. I have put in a call to see if they could attend the graduation. This family was wonderful to my friend's son. If you find someone else, no problem-but as a mom- I have put in some calls to see if I could help in any way.
I feel your pain as well as a citizen. Congrats to your son! I celebrate with you as your son progresses toward his goal of becoming a rescue swimmer and ultimately serving our country! I will get back with you as soon as I know something later today!
dbristol- I know of a family (specifically a mom) that would be honored to attend your son's graduation. Since I am new to this group, I am not sure if you were asking for any mom of this group to attend your son's graduation, or if it was a general question out there for someone who has a heart to attend a soldier's graduation. This family lives in Pensecola and adopted my best friend's son in the "adopt a soldier" program when he served in Iraq. After he arrived stateside, he flew out to Florida and met this family. Eventually both families met eachother in Florida and they have remained friends. While I don't know this family personally, I can tell you that my friend loves them and appreciates their heart for our soldiers. If this is the type of support you would like-and would feel comfortable with- let me know. Maybe we can private message eachother regarding details. This mom said she is available to attend the graduation in the afternoon or later. She is attending someone else's graduation in the morning:) Hope this helps!
dbristol --- woooooohoooooo congrats to you and him, Ill bet he will do great on his final!!! I also was unable to attend but a navy mom friend of mine who lived near Pcola went and taped and photographed it for me!!!!!!!! It was AWESOME because I did not know, and he did not know BUT he was awarded the "Honormen Award".. first Sailor in 3.5 years to win it and she got the celebration on tape! Man did I cry and cry !! Also, the parent that did attend took pictures and my son got hold of some of them and sent them to me.. so if all else fails.... ask you son to be SURE to see whose parents are taking them and get the buddy to send him some to give to you....!! =) or like proudmama said perhaps you can try the adopt a soldier....
dbristol - I wanted to tell you one thing that the CO said at my son's graduation that resonates w me everyday. He said, "Your sons and daughters are the answers to someone's prayers." What he was referring to, of course, is the time when they will have the chance to save someone's life bc of what they do. I know you wish you were there on the 2nd but let that thought sink in and know that your SR is truly the answer to someone's prayers.
dbristol, when my son graduated, one of the other sailor's dads filmed it and then put it on youtube so we were able to watch it that way. I really couldn't hear the ceremony that well but I was still able to see him graduate.
Hi all... My son just graduated from Air Crew School last week with a slew of other young men and one female.. Anyone on here have a son in this group that just graduated?
My son sent me an awesome photo,, the entire graduating class posing in front of a helecopter....
Today is my swimmer's birthday. He turns 19 today. It's the first birthday away from him and it seems so strange. I mailed him his birthday box last week to arrive on Friday since I didn't want it to sit over the weekend (stale cookies, anyone?) but the mail room was closed when he went to get it on Friday. I guess I should have just waited to send it so it arrived on his actual birthday. I guess they went out last weekend to celebrate several other guys birthdays too. It great to see how they all get along so well.
Wow! I love this page! You all have made me smile today.
Travelsalot - congrats! Such a proud day it must have been for your son and you and your family. I can imagine it being a great photo in front of the helicopter! How cool!
Jodi-alumni - Happy Birthday to your son! I pray your son continues to be blessed each and every day! Hard to not be with them on their day but how awesome is it that the friends he has made help him celebrate his day? Yeah for friends and the relationships that these sailors make. I look forward to those days for my son so he can experience that.
AIRR Mom - Thanks for the helpful words. When I know my SR is struggling with something and know they have to figure it out on their own, it is always calming to hear what others have learned from their experiences and the support you give. I know he will come out of this a fine young man, one I will be even more proud of than I already am. Reading about your time with your son and his squadron made me smile. What a great opportunity you had! Oh, the things we will all cherish! Can't wait!!!
AIRRmom86- great thoughts- and well said! I am happy for you that you were able to spend time with your son and his buddies.... and that you laughed...til it hurt! That is the best....!
Jodi- Happy birthday to your son:) I hope he had a great birthday!
Travelsalot- Congrats to your son for graduating from Air Crew School AND for sending you a picture! I'm so happy for him...does he have any good tips for those following in his footsteps?
MK5- I am new to this group too- but I still would like to extend my heartfelt best wishes to your son as he begins this journey!
I have to say this is a great place for information and support. We first experienced how powerful NFM's can be as my son made his way through Pre-BUD/S then the beginning few weeks of BUD/S. The support and encouragement we experienced was tremendous. I can tell from what I am reading the same will be true here.
Congratulations to you all. It's amazing what our son's and daughter's will do to get what they dream of. It is so great to see young people so driven and focused on accomplishing something so honorable and courageous.
Good morning ladies- I have an urgent need. My oldest daughter is married to a Navy Diver and is expecting their second child. She was recently exposed to fifth's disease and results of prenatal testing say that her unborn daughter has severe anemia and is likely going to require an intrauterine blood transfusion. The Navy is sending the family from a remote location in the south pacific to SD. The problem is that they have nobody out there! I do have five young adult children who will be flying out there one at a time to help with babysitting their 4 year old (my first grandson!). I will also be taking time off of work to go out there. However, it would be really helpful to have someone out there as a contact to orient them regarding the city, resources etc.
Also- does anybody know anything about the Navy Hospital (balboa?) in SD? Does anyone know if that is a good facility? Any information you could provide would be most appreciated!
If you could say a prayer for my daughter and wonderful SIL- that would be very helpful. Thanks again to all of you-
San Diego has one of the finest Children's hospital around. Sharp's Childrens Hospital. Balboa is good, but the cilivian hosp is fantastic. Praying for a good outcome.
proudmama, We got you covered in prayer for them and for you through this time. There might be someone through a church where we could get some help for them and be a family. I have a lot of friends in the area. Message me your info and I will get you in touch with someone who might 'adopt' them during that time.
My son graduates RSS tomorrow. I wish I could be there. I am so unbelievably proud of him. If anyone is going and can take pictures, please let me know. It is at the museum at 1:00 in front of the Blue Angels display.
Congratulations, dbristol, I know you are feeling such relief to know he has made it through RSS. It wasn't too long ago that I was in your shoes and now my son will graduate A school in 23 days then after SERE heads to Jacksonville.
dbristol... my previous post you may have missed -----............. so happy for you and your boy!!!!!! sweeeeeet!!!!!!!!!!

Hey yall.... this was a picture that my son got after RSS grad ... there are many photographers there - he emailed this to me.. so if you can not be there... ask your Sailor to get pix for you... i was not able to go either... here was my sons RSS grad several years ago and his receiving the honormen award ... again... many photographers there... navy and parents
OHHHHH also and btw... we all know... when posting photos... no names or name tags or locations if deployed.. etc... OPSEC rules... =) I know everyone knows that anyway...
FRG Family Readiness Group.+ There is one for each ship or group and how we find out about what to do when and how and support for that part of this journey as the family back here. The OPSEC really goes into affect even more at this point. Now learning about my Ombudsman.
Vita.... YES---- from Boot Camp till they retire... OPSEC rules apply ----especially with Spec Ops/Forces... names, dates, locations, ship locations etc... one time a few years ago when I was a new proud happy Navy mamma.. ... I posted a photo of my boy and his name tag showed... well... needless to say... some old Navy moms here told me to take it off.... I never even noticed it!!!!! I was not hurt I was soo thankful that old mammas were watching out for new mammas!!!! so suffice to say.... "Lose Lips Sink Ships" and it is true!!! =)
FRG okay kewl.... I will need this come this fall.... thank you for this info!!!!
National Day of Prayer. I was privileged to lead the prayer time for our Military and got to share some good stories from another chat group on here. Prayed from protection and safety and for families and the adjustments and needs back home. And for the leadership to make wise decisions. Just wanted you all to know that you and your sailors were prayed for today. And if you have something specific, you can message me. That's who I am and what I do. :)
Hi Ladies, thanks to all of you for your prayers for my daughter who is being medvac'd from the South Pacific to SD. It is so frustrating....even with a medical emergency, there is so much paperwork- and a rush to hurry up and ....wait...and wait.... Still, very thankful that the Navy is transferring my SIL to SD for a temperorary position there so he can be with his wife (my daugther) during this time. They should be leaving within the next 24-48 hours.
NancyNature, Vitamama, and Jodi, thanks to all of you for your kind comments and generous offers for prayers and thoughts for my daughter and SIL. Each one of your comments lifted my spirit. I felt stronger with each comment just knowing other mom's out there with children in the Navy care.
Sweetpea- I appreciated your thoughts regarding the hospital - I am trying to see if my daughter HAS to go to the Navy hospital for the fetal intrauterine blood transfusion- or if she can go to Sharp Children's Hospital as you mentioned.
Thanks to all of you- You are the best group of ladies!!
Proud.... OH what did I miss???? Im sooo sorry I did not know there was anything going on with her? I must have accidentally missed some posts this past week or weekend. Please keep us posted and I hope every think will be okay!!!
Proud.... I went back and found the posts.... Im sooo sorry I missed that and I hope and pray the mamma and baby will be fine!!! I know you are on pins and needles also as it does take sooo long!
Lydia- thanks for your concern) You are right, it is very difficult to wait for my daughter to arrive on the "mainland" (as she says...she is a true islander at this point!). In the meantime, I am trying to get my paperwork done for work and take care of my son's needs so that when my daugther arrives- I can help her to the best of my abilities.
My son has a need of the Rocket Fins that have been mentioned earlier. You sent me a link to Stew smith's article regarding fins. The question I have is... when ordering these fins- is there a difference between rescue swimmer fins and SEAL fins? Is there only one type of military dive fin? Is it one size fits all? what type of booties should I purchase? My son's special ops recruiter advised my son to purchase these, but I am not sure of the details. Any advise that anyone could give about this would be greatly appreciated.
ann1 That's the way it is in the Navy, :) If you are near Southwest Airlines, then it's easy and no charge to switch dates. Otherwise, you can sometimes get good last minute flights on Priceline. I got one the day before.
and...ta da! K has joined his squadron on the ship now He said that he won't get to fly for a couple more days but is looking forward to it. I am also on the chat with the gang from that ship. It's crazy because he is just joining them, and they are all chatting about plans for the Homecoming. . Are there any others on HERE who have sons on the Mighty IKE?
Proudmama, yes there is a difference between the SEAL fins and the rescue swimmer fins, according to my SR. He said the SEAL fins are longer than the rescue swimmer fins. This website helped us - scroll down and look at the Q&A section:
My SR ended up buying his off amazon and they were a 'one-size' fits all and he already had booties - Aqua Lung 3mm. He didn't want to spend the $ on a new pair knowing he was leaving soon. Hope it helps.
Proudmama - I don't get on here much and just saw your post. Am keeping you and your family in my thoughts and prayers!! As for the rest of you wonderful supportive moms, thanks for always being here!! What a great God-send you have been?!
Vita - kewl... congrats to him!!! I have heard that Homecomings are sooo kewl... I have yet to go to one.. I did not know Southwest does not charge to change a date.. woooow they really are awesome !!! Cause usually its 100 bux to make a change!! Go Southwest!
Proud... my son bough fins to practice with also, but then left them with another Sailor when he left for SD as the Navy will issue them all their gear once they are out of A school... so hopefully your son can find a used pair as they are a bit expensive like nancy mentioned
HI Birdie!!!!!!
Ann - yup, they wont have a date until real close to grad. My son found out 3 days before!! =( He said that they wait until there are enough Rescue Swimmer AND pilots as well... and of course, many pass testing at different times... so it seems disorganized but really its not. Still I hope yall get to go!!!!
Lydia and nancy nature-thanks for the info! I feel so blessed to gain information and insight from you both! I ordered the needed equipment today! One task down, many more to accomplish before heading out to SD.
Birdiejr- thanks for your kind comments and you are right, this group is a God send to me...I hope to be a blessing to others as much as you all have been to me!
MomofDan... May I ask why you think he will not get it... Did he not get a contract before Boot Camp??? Undesignated means the Navy will put him anywhere that they need him.. not particular rate... I just need to know a bit more info from you... Before BC he should have signed a contract... rarely do they go in without one.... please know that we are here for support and understanding and you can share anything with us... if you are not comfortable doing that please private message me or any of us.... always here for our sisters!!! My boy is over and done and with his squad.. but I know and remember as do so many of us the stress of this pipeline!!!!!!! There are not too many Rates that are open right now due to the down size.... if he needs another rate... they will tell him what is open if anything.. if not... then he will go undesignated and they will make the decision... please let us know how we can help you
Proud!!! awesome! one day at a time! =) One THING at the time
DOR is when the sailor requests to drop the program he/she is in.
Undesignated - after Boot camp, they are sent to a ship.
from the navy.mil site- "Upon their arrival in the fleet, the majority of these Sailors are assigned to deck department. As members of "deck," as it's often referred, Sailors work long, hard hours in the upkeep and preservation of the ship, as well as standing the safety and security watches around the ship while it's underway. During watch shifts and the hours these Sailors are not at work, there is time to learn about the other rates it takes to run a Navy ship."
If your son is still in boot camp, please send him daily positive letters, I sent mine little short funny stories - the kind you receive as e-mail, several a day at the end of the letter. Also, send a phone card, if he does not have one yet with instructions on how to use it.
As Lydia stated, does he have a contract? Why does he think he is not getting to be a rescue swimmer? My son is in San Diego waiting to class up as FRS.
PS --- for moms whose kids are in SD --- Its been a while since I posted this...BUT if your Sailor is looking for a kewl - laid back very very busy church in SD... this is the one my son goes to... Ocean Beach!!!
aster - he will LOVE it... board shorts, tank tops (they love to show of those cannons and tatoos!) and sandals are typical on a Sunday! Youth are SUPER ACTIVE in the Ocean Beach Community. they do a lot of beach clean up projects, fairs and face painting, skateboard park clean up. If he goes tell him to talk to Pastor Steve and tell him he was referred there by Lydia... Im sure Pastor Steve will hook him/them up with the other Navy boys...
Hi Ladies, The medivac is underway! Phew! It is a relief that my daughter is going to receive the medical care that she needs within the next 12 hours. Thanks for your thoughts and prayers ladies! They were greatly appreciated!
Lydia- I am so grateful for your comments about church! I looked it up on line and am going to recommend it to my family members. My other daughter- M (I have 5 of them)- is flying out to meet her sister (the one who is being medivac'd to SD). She will be babysitting their son and keeping things together for at least the first month there. The Dr.prepared them that they may be in SD for up to 6 months. I'm hoping that my 22 year old daughter and other family members will be able to go to church there. Not sure how far it is from base- etc. How accessible it is etc. But I think that would be great to be worship with other 20 -something year olds during a time of great need!
Thanks again to everybody! It is really, really appreciated!
proudmama, it's great that things are moving forward for your daughter. I will continue to pray for a quick recovery. It is great that she will have her sister there to give her help and encouragement. Best wishes for you too.

FRG Family Readiness Group.+ There is one for each ship or group and how we find out about what to do when and how and support for that part of this journey as the family back here. The OPSEC really goes into affect even more at this point. Now learning about my Ombudsman.

This website helped us - scroll down and look at the Q&A section:
http://seavenger.com/deep-sea-scuba-diving-military-fins-rubber-roc...
My SR ended up buying his off amazon and they were a 'one-size' fits all and he already had booties - Aqua Lung 3mm. He didn't want to spend the $ on a new pair knowing he was leaving soon. Hope it helps.
Still in my thoughts and prayers. :)

MomofDan-keep encouraging him, getting down is part of the training. You can go to
http://www.public.navy.mil/bupers-npc/enlisted/community/aviation/P...
to see alternatives to AIRR
Good luck and heads up! Tell him NOT to DOR - it seems like those that do end up and undesignated sailors....

You can message any of us at any time.

aster - he will LOVE it... board shorts, tank tops (they love to show of those cannons and tatoos!) and sandals are typical on a Sunday!
