Moms of Aviation Rescue Swimmers

nancynature....  ahhhh and so it begins!  Most of all the Sailors loved NACCS so Im sure he will be steller!!!   RSS, well maybe not so much but we will sure be praying..  I remember those stomach pains and butterflies!!!!!!!!

Melissa - praying that all will be well and he will be home safe and sound soon!!!  Woow once home he will be super busy!!!  Of course that can be a good thing too though...  

Someone asked about the length of FRS  (FRAC)   it can vary on so many levels...  depending of course number on as to whether it is Sierra or Romeo and also, remember the Sailors do a lot of studying and testing..  so passes and fail can cause delays...  sometimes they have to wait to get all their flights in that are required because there might not be a pilot available at that time ..  they fly with training pilots and seasoned pilots...   so one never really knows for sure but the general rule of thumb is 2 years or so give or take a few months either way..  Now that was Sierra - Romeo takes even longer as it is a more technical pipeline...  my son got his wings almost 3 years to the day that he went in to the Navy - two of which were training after RSS...

Thanks BJ - my Mom is actually from Atlanta, so we have extended family in the area, though my sister and her husband will actually be in Augusta.  He is Army and have been involved in one of their new(ish) programs almost since the beginning - they are setting up a new brigade that is specific to this and he has been tasked with getting it off the ground. 

Lydia - wow 2 years for FRS?  Everything my son was told was 5-6 months, but maybe that is just classroom work before they start training?  It will be interesting to see how it shakes out.

Melissa- Safe journey to your family members, and happy packing??? I'm sure it must be overwhelming. My daughter has had several big moves with the military... and I know it can be a crazy time!

Yup minimum of 2 years plus...  but remember that IS from A school through to wings and there is indeed a lot of class time and then ton and tons of training flights etc...  and as Sweetpea said, it is slowing down even more now...  still as I like to think of it..  they are safe and making a GREAT paycheck!!!  Now my sons time has come to deploy and now I wish he still had 2 more years of more ON LAND training...  even on Dep they are always training but yall know what I mean... safe and sound in San Diego...  but he will leave next month for minimum of 8 months...     OH and also remember if they are Romeo the training takes even longer...

Hi, Lydia, just saw your message over on the Pensacola site. There are some really nice moms on that site so even though my swimmer has moved on to JAX I stayed there. It's an active group whereas the JAX site is very quiet.

You have given all of us so much support that I hope that now that your son is being deployed you will let us return the favor while he is gone.

The Colonel is feet down in DC - safe and sound in the arms of his wife and daughter!  As my niece is fond of saying TRUCK YEAH!!

Lydia - good luck to your son on his deployment.  I know it will be hard on you to have him gone for so long, but try to think of all the wonderful new experiences he will be having.  Keep us posted on his progress and we will keep him in our prayers. 

Okay - 2 years through FRAC makes more sense if you consider it from A School on.  I read your post as meaning that FRAC its self was 2 years and couldn't figure out why my son was told to expect 5-6 months after SERE and his (up to) 45 day hold.  That puts him close to the 2 year mark. 

travelsalot, I was on the Sailors in Pensacola for A School site when my son was in Pensacola for RSS. Even though he moved on to Jacksonville I stayed on the other site since the JAX site is very quiet. My son says a lot of sailors there have been in for a while (he's the youngest by 3 years or so of the ones he hangs around with) so their moms/wives may not use the site very much. The Pensacola site has a bunch of really nice women on it.

Hi to All - I've been lying low since our son graduated boot camp and left for Pensacola.  I went down for his graduation from Air Crew Dry (I guess that's what it's called).  He's in RSS now and his dad and I are planning to drive down and attend his graduation on August 2.  Congrats to all of you on your sailors' accomplishments.  I'm still not sure what's next for our son, but am excited for him.  It's been very informative following all of you on this site, and I hope to put my two cents in more often.

Hi Cinthia;  My son just left Pensacola Monday for San Diego!!! Well, he got there in Jan...and his last graduation was July 3rd.  But, it really all depends on how fast the push him through.   

I'm so glad that I came here, I've been wanted to connect with Mom and loved ones going through the same stuff.  Our group of guys are a lot different then other rates, it can be nerve racking.  If I can help anyone please ask.  My Sailor has graduated from Pensacola, and is now arrived in San Diego today!!! for the last stages of training.  

Cinthia - the way I understand it from my son, they do AIRR (which is about a week), then RSS (which is about 6 weeks, depending on if they go straight through or get set back) and then A School in Pensacola.  My son finished bc in Oct 12, and went right to Pensacola, but didn't start RSS until Jan because of maintenance issues with the training pool.  He completed A School (apparently with Vallie62's son!) on 3 July and because he is Sierra he is headed to San Diego (SERE first, then FRS). 

Your husband's time frame in Pensacola will really depend on how quickly he is classed up and then whether or not he completes the school he starts with, or gets sent back for medical or other issues.  Where he goes from there depends on if he is a Sierra or Romeo swimmer as they do different training for the specific jobs they do.  All told you are looking at 7-8 months as the least amount of time he will be there. 

Cinthia - welcome to the journey. It is a hurry and wait time, depending on how long they are on hold. learn to go with the flow and it makes it a little easier. The hardest time my son had was the waiting to class up, he needs to keep himself busy and to stay around those that are positive about the journey. Some get so discouraged while waiting that they end up in trouble. My son was not a fan of waiting but he learned to keep himself busy and to hang with the right guys.

Jodi...  yes I was first on the Pensacola site for a long time then came over to this site and even tho I stayed on for a long time, I became more active here as the moderators sort of faded away....  Are Robin and Jacqueline not on there any more... they were the original two moderators...???  I did not see them on there .....   glad you are hanging in there and helping the newbies!!!!  paying it forward I always say...

cinthia...  Which A school?  That makes a difference in the time..  Romeo is much longer than Sierra..  my son Grad RSS in January (three almost years ago) and started his Sierra A School end of January and was heading to SD Cali about 4 months later...  After you hubby grads A School he might go to JAX or San Diego...  if you can wait it out I would...since you live in Cali....  Cinthia.....  I am confused tho as you said he is Starting A school.....   so if that is the case then he has finished up with NACCS and RSS??????   A school is the last of his schools in Pcola...  not the first....  confusing I know....   If you have not already.... please feel free to go up to the forum discussion and read the Path of the Rescue Swimmer... it will help with a lot of questions.......

HI ochaos.....  long time no see!!!  =)   How are you....  yes hold times are great opportunities for the kids to really beef up their PT numbers also...  especially if they are on hold for RSS.....

HI Melissa!!!  good accounting!!!!!!   but it may be confusing to some as it is not really AIRR   but it is NACCS   Naval Aircrew Candidate School...  that is the first school then of course we all know the rest Rescue Swimmer School and then they are given which they will go either Romeo or Sierra and that A School time depends on which one...  Romeo is more technical so it lasts longer....

My son left Pensacola today for San Diego; he is currently sitting in the airport in Dallas because of mechanical difficulties with the plane.  Fingers crossed they get it fixed and get him to Cali soon because he reports for SERE first thing in the morning.

Aster- I would love to go back... I think it is just a matter of how long they will need to stay. Some medical tests still pending... I think they won't know until the middle of August.

Good afternoon all!  I have been "lurking" for a while now.  My son leaves for bc August 6, the time has flown by.  I have learned a lot from reading the boards, there are many wise women out there!  I can't wait for the process to start.  Looks like there are a couple of others leaving around the same time.  Best wishes to all!

Kim- I'm excited for your daughter to join our sons in their quest to become an air rescue swimmer! My daughter was an MP in the army and loved it! She did exactly what she set out to do and that was "to see the world". Now, it's my son's turn!

Well my son is in week 3 of his "A" school for Sierra. If everything goes as planned, he will graduate on August 19th. He was so excited, because on his first 2 tests so far he has got 100% on each of them. He was happy he had the top grades so far because he is hoping to get first choice on whether he goes to Cali or Virginia. He made me laugh so hard, cuz he was like "gosh mom, studying does really pay off. I guess I should have done it in high school."  He graduated with a 3.65 and had almost all A's in high school, but I literally can never remember him bring home a book to study or even to do homework. He would just get the work done in class. Such a stinker, but I love him and am so proud. He is well on his way. Can't believe it is almost a year that he has been gone. I miss him as much as the first day he left, but I am so proud he is following his dreams.

Dbristol, yep they grow up and make us more proud!!
